What it is

HiPP Organic Dinosaur Crunchy Snack, Cranberry, Currant and Ancient Grain, 30 g, from 12 months

HiPP Urkorn-Dinos are an organic baby snack of puffed ancient grain shaped into little dinosaurs, for children from 12 months. The 30 g pack is made from 99% organic cereal, it is vegetarian and egg-free, and HiPP makes it with no added sugar and no added flavourings.

The grains are the point of this one. Millet, corn, spelt, oat and emmer are blended and puffed, with wholegrain millet flour the largest single ingredient at 27% and wholegrain spelt flour next at 24%. Spelt and emmer are the two ancient grains the name refers to, both older relatives of modern wheat, and HiPP builds its "Bio fuer Kinder" range on them.

The fruit side is small and deliberate. Apple juice concentrate at 7%, cranberry puree at 0.8% and blackcurrant juice concentrate at 0.6% carry the flavour, with a little carrot juice concentrate for colour. That is where the sweetness comes from: HiPP adds no sugar to this product, and the sugar on the nutrition panel is what the fruit and the grain bring with them.

It is a finger food rather than a meal. The pieces are firm enough to hold and dissolve as they are chewed, which is what makes them useful at the stage where a toddler wants to feed themselves. HiPP suggests about ten dinos as a daily portion, ideally as part of a between-meal snack rather than instead of one.

The organic claim is certified rather than decorative. The pack carries the organic control body code AT-BIO-501 and an EU/non-EU agriculture statement, and the product is made in Austria for HiPP. It is a plain, everyday snack for the lunchbox or the pushchair, not a specialist food.

Who it is for

Where this snack fits in your child's day

HiPP dates this one from 12 months, and the age is about chewing rather than about nutrition. These are crunchy puffed pieces that need gums and teeth working together, so they sit after the softer first snacks rather than alongside them. A child who is already managing finger food confidently is the one this is built for.

It suits the gap between meals. HiPP's own guidance is about ten dinos as a daily portion, ideally as part of a between-meal snack, which is a useful way to think about it: a handful with a drink rather than a bowl. The 30 g pack is small enough to go in a bag and firm enough not to turn to dust on the way.

It is worth saying plainly what it is not. This is a cereal snack, not a fruit or vegetable portion, and it is not a substitute for a meal. It contains gluten, spelt and oats, so it is not suitable for a child avoiding any of those. HiPP does state that it is vegetarian and made without egg.

If your child is not quite ready for crunchy pieces

For a younger child the softer snacks come first. HiPP Organic Blueberry Rice Cakes, 30 g and HiPP Organic Millet Sticks dissolve more readily in the mouth. Each has its own age on the pack, so check the one you buy rather than assuming it matches this one.

Serving it

How to serve it, and the safety part first

Read this before the first pack

HiPP prints a choking warning on this product and it is the most important thing on the pack. Never give the dinos to a child who is lying down. Stay with your child while they are eating them, and keep up regular tooth brushing. Small, firm pieces of any kind need an adult in the room.

HiPP publishes a daily portion and a storage instruction for this product, and those are given below in HiPP's own terms. HiPP publishes no preparation method, because the snack is ready to eat straight from the pack. The steps below are ordinary serving practice around HiPP's own portion guidance, not additional manufacturer instructions. Follow whatever is printed on the pack you receive.

1

Sit your child up first

In a high chair or at the table, upright and settled, never lying down and never walking around with a handful. This is HiPP's own instruction and not a suggestion.

2

Open and pour a few out

Tip a small number into a bowl or onto the tray rather than handing over the whole pack. It is easier to judge how much has been eaten and easier to slow things down.

3

About ten dinos is the daily portion

That is HiPP's own figure, given as a daily portion and ideally as part of a between-meal snack rather than in place of a meal.

4

Stay with your child

Supervise the whole time the pack is open. Crunchy pieces are exactly the kind of food that needs someone watching, however confident an eater your child is.

5

Offer a drink alongside

Water with a dry snack helps it go down and is the ordinary habit to build. Keep it within reach rather than at the other end of the table.

6

Close the pack and use it up

HiPP says to close an opened pack, ideally with a clip, and use it up quickly. Store the pack dry and at room temperature.

Choking hazard. Never give the dinos to a child lying down, and supervise your child while they are eating. HiPP also asks you to keep up regular dental care. The pack is packed under a protective atmosphere and the fill height is set by the packing process, so a pack that looks part empty is normal. Check the pack is undamaged before use.
Nutrition

What is in 100 g

This is HiPP's own average nutritional declaration for the product, reproduced on the manufacturer's per 100 g basis. No per-portion figure is published for this snack, so none is given here and nothing below has been rescaled or calculated.

The panel printed on the pack you receive is the one that governs, and recipes are revised from time to time.

Pack size

What you get, and how far a 30 g pack goes

This listing is one 30 g pack. HiPP gives a daily portion of about ten dinos, ideally as part of a between-meal snack.

How many portions that makes cannot honestly be given as a number. HiPP publishes the pack weight and the portion in pieces, but no weight per dino, and the two units do not convert into one another. Dividing 30 g by a guessed piece weight would produce a figure that looks precise and is invented, so no portions-per-pack count is claimed here.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

How many should I give my child?

HiPP gives a daily portion of about ten dinos, ideally as part of a between-meal snack rather than in place of a meal. Sit your child up to eat them and stay with them throughout.

From what age can my child have these?

From 12 months, which is the age HiPP gives for this product. The pieces are crunchy and need confident chewing, which is why they come after the softer first snacks.

Is it vegetarian?

Yes. HiPP lists vegetarian among this product's stated properties, alongside organic, no added sugar and egg-free.

Does it contain egg?

No. HiPP states this product is made without egg, and egg does not appear in the ingredient list or the allergen declaration.

Does it contain gluten?

Yes. It contains SPELT, OATS and gluten-containing cereals, and spelt and emmer are types of WHEAT. It is not suitable for a child avoiding gluten.

Is there sugar in it?

HiPP adds none. The claim is no added sugar, with HiPP's own qualifier that the ingredients naturally contain sugar: the 6.9 g per 100 g on the panel comes from the grain and the fruit concentrates.

Is it really organic?

Yes, and it is certified rather than described. The pack carries the organic control body code AT-BIO-501 with an EU and non-EU agriculture statement, and HiPP states the product is made from 99% organic cereal.

Why does the pack look only part full?

That is normal and HiPP says so on the pack. It is packed under a protective atmosphere to keep the pieces crisp, and the fill height is determined by the packing process rather than by the contents being short.
