What it is

HiPP Baby Gentle Care 2 in 1 Shampoo and Shower Gel, 200 ml, from the first day of life

HiPP Baby Gentle Care 2 in 1 is a baby shampoo and body wash in one bottle, suitable from the first day of life. It is a 200 ml 2-in-1 baby wash made for sensitive baby skin and fine hair, it is pH skin-neutral, and HiPP states that it does not sting the eyes.

The whole point of a 2-in-1 is that there is one bottle to reach for while a wet baby is held in the other arm. This one cleans hair and skin in the same pass, so there is no swapping between a shampoo and a body wash halfway through, and only one bottle sitting on the edge of the bath. For a newborn baby wash that is worth more than it sounds, because the part of bath time that goes wrong is usually the part where you need a free hand.

It is pH skin-neutral, and that is the detail that matters most on a baby. Skin carries a slightly acidic surface film, and a wash matched to that pH works with it rather than against it. HiPP pairs that with a formula built not to sting the eyes, which is the practical test of any baby shampoo: a wash that stings once turns the next several baths into an argument.

HiPP also states that fine hair is easier to comb afterwards, without any tugging. The ingredient panel bears that out, because it carries a guar-derived conditioning agent and panthenol alongside the cleansers. The care side comes from valuable ingredients from organic almonds, which is HiPP's own description of the sweet almond extract in it.

What has been left out is part of the specification rather than an afterthought. HiPP gives this product 0% microplastics, and makes it without parabens and without mineral oil. The formula is stated to be 100% biodegradable by OECD 301/302 or equivalent methods, and the packaging is recyclable. As a German baby care product from the HiPP range it is the plain, everyday bottle rather than a specialist one.

Whose skin it suits

Whose skin and hair this bottle is for

HiPP describes this as care for sensitive skin and fine hair, and dates it from the first day of life. That age range is the useful part: the same bottle covers a newborn, the months of sitting up in a few inches of water, and the toddler who washes their own hair badly. Nothing has to change as your baby grows, which is the ordinary reason a 2-in-1 ends up being the bottle that gets replaced rather than the one that gets abandoned.

It is worth being straight about who it is not for. This wash contains Parfum, so it is lightly scented rather than unscented. If you specifically need a wash with no fragrance in it at all, this is not that product. It also contains sweet almond seed extract, so read the ingredient panel before use if nut allergy is something your family watches for.

And it is a wash rather than a bath additive. You put it on your baby and rinse it off; you do not pour it into the bathwater and leave them in it. If what you want is something for the water itself, that is a different product in the range. Where this one sits is the washing step: wash, rinse, pat dry, and then a lotion or a cream afterwards if your baby's skin tends to dry out.

If you would rather treat the hair separately

A 2-in-1 is one product doing two jobs, and some parents would rather it did not. For hair alone there is HiPP Baby Shampoo, 200 ml, and once hair is long enough that combing is the problem rather than washing, there is HiPP Baby Shampoo and Conditioner, 200 ml. Each has its own ingredient panel, so check the one on the bottle you buy.

Using it

How to use it at bath time

Read this before the first bath

Never leave a baby alone in or near water, not for a moment and not for a reach. This product is for external use only. Keep the bottle out of reach and away from the edge of the bath. It is made not to sting the eyes, which is not the same as having no effect, so rinse with clean water if any gets in. Stop using it if the skin becomes red or irritated, and speak to your doctor or pharmacist if that does not settle.

HiPP publishes no quantity, water temperature or washing frequency for this product, so none is stated here. The six steps below are general practice for washing a baby, not manufacturer instructions. Follow whatever is printed on the bottle you receive.

1

Get everything ready first

Towel, clean clothes and the bottle all within arm's reach before your baby goes anywhere near the water. The point is that you never have to turn away or stand up.

2

Check the water yourself

Warm rather than hot, and tested with your own wrist or elbow rather than your hand. Run the cold tap last so the tap itself is not hot to touch.

3

A little into your hand

Squeeze a small amount into your palm or onto a soft cloth rather than straight onto your baby. A gel of this kind spreads much further than expected once there is water with it.

4

Hair first, then the body

Work it gently through the hair, then over the skin, keeping a hand across the forehead so that what runs off runs backwards and away from the eyes.

5

Mind the creases

Neck folds, behind the ears, under the arms and the backs of the knees are where milk and moisture collect. Go gently over them and do not scrub.

6

Rinse, pat dry, then moisturise

Rinse until nothing slippery is left, particularly in the hair and the skin folds. Pat rather than rub, dry the creases properly, and follow with a lotion or cream if the skin tends to dryness.

Never leave a baby unattended in or near water. For external use only. Avoid direct contact with the eyes and rinse with clean water if it happens. Keep the bottle out of reach of children. Discontinue use if the skin reacts, and check the ingredient panel on your bottle before first use.
What is in it

What is in HiPP Baby Gentle Care 2 in 1

The full ingredient panel for this bottle is below, transcribed from the panel printed on the back of the bottle. Underneath it is a translation, because an ingredient panel for a wash is written in INCI names that say nothing to most people.

Lightly fragranced, and it contains almond

Parfum appears in the ingredient panel, so this is a mildly scented wash rather than an unscented one. Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Seed Extract is sweet almond, which is the ingredient HiPP describes as coming from organic almonds. Read the full panel before use if nut allergy is a concern in your family.

On the label

Ingredients and more

Aqua, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Coco-Glucoside, Glycerin, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Sodium Chloride, Panthenol, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Seed Extract, Tocopherol, Citric Acid, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides Citrate, Levulinic Acid, Sodium Levulinate, Sodium Anisate, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Glyceryl Oleate, Parfum.

Allergens: contains Parfum, and contains sweet almond as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Seed Extract. A cosmetic carries no statutory allergen declaration, so this is a read-the-label note and not a declaration. Names are given in INCI form, as printed.

Transcribed word for word from the ingredient panel printed on the back of the bottle, and matching HiPP's own published panel for this product entry for entry. An earlier version of this listing carried a sixteen-entry panel naming Sodium Citrate and p-Anisic Acid in place of Citric Acid, Levulinic Acid, Sodium Levulinate and Sodium Anisate; that was an older revision and it has been replaced by the list printed on the bottle. The panel on the bottle you receive is the one that governs, and cosmetic formulations are revised from time to time.

What the main ingredients are doing

On the panel What it is
Aqua Water, the base of the wash
Coco-Glucoside A mild sugar-based cleanser, derived from coconut
Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine A mild cleanser that builds the lather
Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate A third mild cleanser, used in low-irritation washes
Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate A plant-derived ingredient that holds moisture
Glycerin Draws water into the skin, so it does not feel tight afterwards
Panthenol Provitamin B5, used on skin and hair
Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride The guar-derived conditioner that makes fine hair comb more easily
Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Seed Extract Sweet almond seed extract, HiPP's organic almond component
Tocopherol Vitamin E
Glyceryl Oleate A softening agent
Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides Citrate A co-emulsifier that keeps the formula stable
Sodium Chloride Salt, used to thicken the gel
Parfum The fragrance

The table above translates the main ingredients only and is not the full panel; it is not given in the order of the panel, and the panel above it is the complete list. The panel printed on the bottle you receive is the one that governs.

What is left out

What HiPP leaves out of it

On a baby wash the exclusions are often the reason for buying, so they are worth setting out properly with the qualifier that belongs to each one rather than as a row of badges.

  • 0% microplastics
  • No parabens
  • No mineral oil
  • 100% biodegradable formula
  • pH skin-neutral
  • Recyclable packaging

0% microplastics. HiPP's own footnote defines this as a recipe without water-soluble, purely synthetic polymers. 100% biodegradable formula. HiPP's footnote on this product reads: according to OECD 301/302 or equivalent methods. Recyclable packaging. HiPP states the packaging is recyclable and certified to the CHI standard in Germany.

What is not claimed for this product

No fragrance-free, soap-free, vegan, cruelty-free, organic or dermatologically-tested claim is made for this wash, and none should be read into it. It contains Parfum. The organic reference belongs to the almond component, not to the product: this is not sold as a certified organic cosmetic. HiPP makes no claim about any skin condition for it, and neither do we.

Pack size

What you get, and how long a 200 ml bottle lasts

This listing is one 200 ml bottle. Because it is a 2-in-1, that 200 ml is doing the work of a shampoo and a body wash together, so it replaces two bottles rather than one.

How long it lasts cannot honestly be given as a number. HiPP publishes no quantity per wash for this product, and a wash is used by hand rather than measured, so any per-bottle count would be invented. What can be said is how the HiPP washes compare on size and on what each one is for, which is usually the real question behind "how long will it last".

HiPP wash Size What it washes
This bottle, 2 in 1 200 ml Hair and body, one product
Head to Toe Wash Gel 400 ml Hair and body, larger single bottle
Head to Toe Wash Gel with refill 800 ml The same gel with a refill included
Baby Shampoo 200 ml Hair only
Baby Shampoo and Conditioner 200 ml Hair, with a conditioning step

These are separate HiPP products with separate ingredient panels, listed here by size and purpose only. No equivalence between their formulas is implied. No number of washes per bottle is claimed, because no quantity per wash is published for this product.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

Can I really use it on both hair and body?

Yes, that is what it is built for. HiPP sells it as a 2 in 1 shampoo and shower gel for hair and body, so one product covers both in the same wash and there is no second bottle to pick up.

From what age can I use it?

From the first day of life, which is the age HiPP gives for this product. There is no separate newborn version to start on first.

Will it sting my baby's eyes?

HiPP states that it does not sting the eyes. That is not the same as having no effect at all, so keep the lather away from the eyes where you can and rinse with clean water if some gets in.

Is it fragrance-free?

No. Parfum is in the ingredient panel, so it is a lightly scented wash. If you need a product with no fragrance in it at all, this is not the one.

Does it contain nuts?

It contains sweet almond seed extract, listed on the panel as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Seed Extract. Read the full ingredient panel before use if nut allergy is a concern in your family.

Is this an organic shampoo?

No. HiPP describes it as containing valuable ingredients from organic almonds, and that organic reference belongs to the almond component. The wash itself is not sold as a certified organic cosmetic and we make no organic claim for it.

How much should I use, and how often?

HiPP does not publish a quantity per wash or a washing frequency for this product, so we do not state one. A small amount goes a long way once it is wet. Follow whatever is printed on the bottle you receive.

Is it the same as the HiPP Head to Toe Wash Gel?

No. Both wash hair and body, but they are different HiPP products with different ingredient panels. This listing is the 200 ml 2 in 1 shampoo and shower gel.

The from-birth age and the 200 ml pack size are confirmed by HiPP's published product data.
