HiPP Organic 5 Grain with Prune Milk and Cereal, from the 6th month
HiPP Organic 5 Grain with Prune is an organic milk and cereal porridge for babies from the 6th month. The milk is already in the powder, so the bowl is made up with water alone. It carries five cereals, plum flakes and a fortified vitamin and mineral package including calcium, iron, iodine, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B1, vitamin D and vitamin E. It is a European baby cereal with no added sugar, no sweeteners and no juice concentrates.
Two things make this pack distinctive. The first is that it is a milk cereal: whey product and 17 percent skimmed milk powder are in the mix, so you do not add a milk feed to it. HiPP is explicit that the porridge is prepared with water, and that is what keeps the preparation to one step.
The second is the plum. Plum flakes make up 2.1 percent of the dry mix, and plum is the fruit traditionally reached for when a baby's stools have firmed up on a new diet of solids. HiPP does not make a claim about that on the pack and neither do we, but it explains why a plum variant exists alongside the plain ones.
The grain side is five cereals: 12 percent durum wheat semolina, 6 percent soft wheat semolina, 6 percent wholemeal oat flour, 3 percent rice flour and 2.4 percent corn flour. Wheat and oats both carry gluten, and HiPP describes the pack as a valuable, easily digestible cereal that contains gluten. It is not a gluten-free product and no such claim is made for it.
The fortification is what sets a milk cereal apart from a plain one, and each nutrient on this pack has an authorized statement behind it. Calcium is needed to maintain normal bones. Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and to the normal cognitive development of children. Iodine contributes to normal thyroid function. Vitamin A contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Vitamin C increases iron absorption, which is why it sits in the same pack as the iron. Vitamin B1, thiamine, contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Those are the statements the pack carries and nothing beyond them is claimed here.
The pack also carries HiPP's PRAEBIOTIK marking, which on this declaration is the galacto-oligosaccharides obtained from lactose. We name it because it is on the pack, and we make no health claim for it, because none is authorized.

Where it fits
Where this one sits in the weaning day
A fortified milk cereal is usually the evening bowl. It is the most substantial thing in a baby cereal range, because it carries the milk, the fat and the mineral package all in one, and a bowl of it late in the day is what many families use in place of an evening milk feed as weaning progresses. HiPP places it from the 6th month, which is the point at which a milk feed starts giving way to a solid meal.
The plum is the reason some parents pick this one specifically. When solids are new, a baby's digestion changes, and plum is the fruit most households already associate with that. The pack makes no claim about it, so treat it as a flavor and an ingredient rather than as a remedy. If your baby is genuinely uncomfortable, that is a conversation with your pediatrician and not something a cereal choice settles.
It is not a first cereal. Five grains and milk arrive together in this bowl, two of the grains carry gluten, and that leaves you nothing to isolate if something disagrees. Grains are normally introduced singly, a few days apart. Once wheat, oats, rice and corn have each been met on their own and taken well, a five-grain pack becomes the straightforward option rather than a question.
HiPP states that this porridge is prepared with baby water and nothing else, because the milk is already in the powder. Boil fresh water and cool it to about 50 degrees Celsius before it meets the flakes. Follow the quantities in the table below: HiPP asks that you keep to its dosage and preparation recommendations, because a porridge made up wrongly is not a neutral mistake at this age.

1
Boil the water, then cool it
Boil fresh drinking water and let it come down to about 50 degrees Celsius. Water that is too hot works against the flakes dissolving rather than for it.
2
Measure the flakes into a bowl
Put the amount of flakes your baby's age calls for into a bowl before any water goes in. The table below gives HiPP's own three options.
3
Pour the water on and mix
Add the measured, cooled water to the flakes and stir it through until it is smooth.
4
Leave it one minute to swell
HiPP specifies a minute. The flakes take up the water as they stand, and a bowl served immediately will be looser than the one HiPP intends.
5
Check the temperature
Check the bowl yourself before it reaches your baby. A porridge holds heat unevenly even when the outside of the bowl feels cool.
6
Feed it fresh, with a spoon
Prepare the porridge immediately before feeding and feed it with a spoon. Do not make a bowl up in advance and do not keep a part-eaten one back.

Quantities are HiPP's own for this pack. Every baby eats a different amount, and HiPP presents these as recommendations rather than as fixed portions. The tablespoon figures are a guide to the gram weights beside them rather than a substitute for them.
Do not use a microwave. HiPP warns against heating the prepared porridge in a microwave because of the risk of burns. Store the unopened box at room temperature, at most 25 degrees Celsius; after opening keep it in a dry place at room temperature, close it tightly after each use and consume the contents within 3 to 4 weeks. Check the pack is undamaged before you open it. Take good care of your baby's teeth, and talk to your doctor about additional nutrition.
Nutrients
What the fortification is for
A fortified milk cereal carries a specific list of nutrients, and each one on this pack has a statement authorized for it. This is that list, with the authorized wording rather than a looser version of it.
Nutrient
What is authorized for it
Calcium
Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones.
Iron
Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin, and to the normal cognitive development of children.
Iodine
Iodine contributes to the normal function of the thyroid.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C increases iron absorption.
Vitamin B1 (thiamine)
Thiamine contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
Vitamin D
Declared on the pack as cholecalciferol. No further statement is made for it here.
Vitamin E
Declared on the pack as DL-alpha tocopheryl acetate. No further statement is made for it here.
We have not been able to source a verified nutrition table with the quantity of each nutrient per 100 g for this pack, so none is printed. The figures are on the box. No amount has been estimated.
Ingredients and allergens
What is in it
Contains gluten and milk
This is a milk cereal with wheat and oats in it, so it declares both milk and gluten. HiPP describes it as a valuable, easily digestible cereal that contains gluten. No gluten-free claim and no dairy-free claim is made for this product and neither should be read into it.
Reproduced from the ingredient declaration carried by this product. Always check the panel printed on the box you have, because artwork is revised from time to time and the box in your hand governs.
The galacto-oligosaccharides from lactose are what HiPP marks on this pack as PRAEBIOTIK. We name the ingredient because it is declared. No health claim is made for it, because none is authorized.
Read as a list, that is milk and whey, five cereals, three vegetable oils, plum, and a mineral and vitamin package. There are no sweeteners and no juice concentrates, which HiPP states explicitly, and no sugar is added.

How far a box goes
With a measured cereal this is ordinarily a simple division: the net weight of the box divided by the grams in one bowl. HiPP gives us the second figure three times over, by age, so the arithmetic is ready to do.
What we do not have is the first figure. No net weight is stated for this product on our site and we have not been able to verify a published one, so we have not printed a portions-per-box number. Take the net weight from the front of your box and divide it by the per-bowl grams for your baby's age and you will have the count for the pack you are holding.

A dry cereal has no fluid yield of its own, so bowls rather than ounces is the useful measure here. The prepared weights HiPP gives are 155 g, 175 g and 195 g for the three portions above.
If you would like the net weight and a bowl count added to this page, send us a photograph of the front of your box and we will transcribe it. We would rather publish a gap we can explain than a number we cannot stand behind.

Questions parents ask
Frequently asked questions
How do I prepare it?
With water only. Boil fresh water and cool it to about 50 degrees Celsius, put the flakes in a bowl, pour the water on and mix, leave it one minute to swell, check the temperature and feed it fresh with a spoon. From the 6th month that is 40 g of flakes, about 3 to 4 tablespoons, with 135 ml of water, giving a 175 g bowl.
Do I add milk or formula to it?
No. Whey product and 17 percent skimmed milk powder are already in the mix, so HiPP prepares this porridge with water. That is what makes it a milk cereal rather than a plain one.
From what age can my baby have it?
From the 6th month, which is the age carried by this product. HiPP also gives a larger 45 g portion from the 8th month and a smaller 35 g one, so the same box follows your baby upward.
Is it gluten-free?
No. It carries durum wheat semolina, soft wheat semolina and wholemeal oat flour, and HiPP describes it as a cereal that contains gluten. If you need a gluten-free milk cereal, the corn-based one in the same family is the pack to look at.
Does it contain added sugar?
No. HiPP states there are no added sugars, no sweeteners and no juice concentrates in this pack. Any sugar on the panel comes from the milk, the plum and the grain.
What is the plum for?
It is 2.1 percent plum flakes, and it is there as a fruit and a flavor. HiPP makes no claim about what plum does, and neither do we. If your baby is uncomfortable, that is a conversation with your pediatrician rather than a cereal choice.
What does PRAEBIOTIK mean on the pack?
On this declaration it is the galacto-oligosaccharides obtained from lactose. We name the ingredient because it is on the label, and we make no health claim for it, because none is authorized.
How many bowls does a box make?
We have not published a figure, because no net weight for this pack could be verified. Divide the net weight on your box by 35, 40 or 45 g depending on the portion you use and you will have the count.
How long does it keep once opened?
Close the box tightly after each use, keep it in a dry place at room temperature, and use the contents within 3 to 4 weeks. Store an unopened box at room temperature, at most 25 degrees Celsius.
Written from the ingredient declaration, the nutrient statements, the preparation instructions and the three-row portion table carried by this product, all reproduced above as they stand: the water-only preparation, the 50 degree water, the one-minute swell, the 35, 40 and 45 g portions with their 120, 135 and 150 ml of water and their 155, 175 and 195 g prepared weights, the microwave warning, the 25 degree storage limit and the 3 to 4 week window after opening. The nutrient wording is the authorized wording for each nutrient and nothing further is claimed. No claim is made for the galacto-oligosaccharides or for the plum, because none is authorized. The 6 month age is taken from the product itself. No net weight and no quantified nutrition table could be sourced for this pack, so no portions-per-box figure has been calculated and the section on how far a box goes says so rather than estimating one.
