What it is

HiPP Organic Mild Apple Juice, from 4 months

HiPP Organic Mild Apple Juice is an organic apple juice for babies, suitable from 4 months and for small children. It is made from concentrates from organically grown apples, with no added sugar, and it is gluten-free. It carries 25 mg of vitamin C per 100 ml, which is 100 percent of the daily reference intake, so it is high in vitamin C. It comes in 200 ml and 500 ml.

Apple is the usual first juice for a reason: it is the mildest of the common fruits, low in the acids that make a juice sharp, and familiar enough that most babies take it without fuss. HiPP calls this one mild, and that is the character it is built for rather than an afterthought.

Two sizes are worth knowing about. The 200 ml bottle is a single-sitting size, which suits a household that opens a juice occasionally. The 500 ml bottle is better value by volume but has to be used over several days once open. Which one suits you depends on how often juice actually appears in your week.

The vitamin C is the nutritional point of a baby juice, and it does two things that are authorized to be said of it. Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system, and it increases the absorption of iron from a meal. The second is the more useful of the two in practice: iron from cereals and vegetables is taken up poorly on its own, and a vitamin C source served alongside improves it. At 25 mg per 100 ml, a full daily reference intake, this bottle is a substantial source.

What the panel also shows is that this is a full-strength fruit juice: 12 g of carbohydrate and 11 g of sugars per 100 ml, all of it the apple's own. That is roughly twice the sugar concentration of HiPP's multifruit juice drink, so it is worth treating as juice rather than as a soft drink for babies. We have more on that below.

As a European baby drink it is made under HiPP's organic standards, free from added sugars, artificial additives, preservatives and GMO ingredients.

Where it fits

Where a juice fits in a baby's day

This product is placed from 4 months, which is early, and the honest thing to say is that a juice at that age is a taste and a vitamin C source rather than a drink a baby needs. Breast milk or infant formula covers fluid and nutrition completely in the first months. If your baby is near the bottom of this age range, the question of whether to introduce a juice at all is one for your pediatrician rather than for a product page.

Where it earns its place is beside a meal. From the point solids start, iron becomes the nutrient to watch, and iron from cereals, lentils and green vegetables is absorbed poorly without vitamin C alongside it. A small amount of this juice with a cereal or a vegetable meal is doing real nutritional work. The same juice sipped between meals through an afternoon is not.

Water stays the everyday drink. A juice is an addition to it and not a replacement, and at 11 g of sugars per 100 ml it is not a drink to leave within reach. Served in a cup, at a sitting, in a measured amount is the pattern that makes sense.

About the strength of this juice

The panel for this bottle shows 12 g of carbohydrate and 11 g of sugars per 100 ml, which is the concentration of an ordinary apple juice rather than a watered one. HiPP describes the product as mild, which refers to the low acidity and the gentle taste rather than to a reduced sugar content. We have not been able to source a published dilution instruction or serving volume for this bottle, so we do not print one: follow the guidance on the label, and talk to your pediatrician about how much juice suits your baby's age.

Serving and storage

How to serve it

Ready to drink, and no dilution ratio is published

This is a juice from concentrates rather than a concentrate you make up, so nothing has to be mixed. We have not been able to source a published serving volume, dilution ratio or after-opening storage window for this bottle, so none is printed below. Those figures are on the label and the bottle in your hand governs.

1

Check the bottle and the date

Look over the glass and the closure before you open it, and check the date on the label.

2

Pour a measured amount into a cup

Pour rather than serving from the bottle. You then know what your baby has had, and the rest is not warmed and handled repeatedly.

3

Serve it with a meal

A juice does its nutritional work beside an iron-bearing meal, because the vitamin C increases iron absorption. Between meals, water is the better drink.

4

Keep it to a sitting

Offer it and take it away rather than leaving it within reach. A sweet drink taken slowly over a long period is the pattern dental guidance is aimed at.

5

Close it and refrigerate

Close the bottle after each use and keep it cold. We cannot quote a number of days, so follow the after-opening guidance printed on the label.

6

Keep water on offer

Water covers a baby's fluid needs. Juice is an addition to it rather than a substitute, and the smaller 200 ml bottle exists partly so that a juice does not have to be a daily habit.

A juice is not a milk feed and not water. Breast milk or infant formula is what a baby of this age needs, and water is the everyday drink alongside solids. This juice is neither. It carries 11 g of sugars per 100 ml, all of it from the apple, so offer it in a cup, at a meal, in a measured amount, and see to regular dental care from the first tooth. At the younger end of this age range, ask your pediatrician before introducing a juice at all.
Nutrition

Nutrition per 100 ml

This is the panel as it stands for this product. The thing to notice is the carbohydrate figure, which tells you this is juice at normal strength, and the vitamin C figure, which is a full daily reference intake in 100 ml.

Per 100 ml Amount
Energy 209 kJ / 49 kcal
Fat 0.04 g
of which saturates 0.01 g
Carbohydrate 12.0 g
of which sugars 11.0 g
Fiber 0.2 g
Protein 0.1 g
Salt less than 0.05 g
Sodium less than 0.02 g
Vitamin C 25 mg (100% of reference intake)

The 11 g of sugars is the apple's own, and HiPP states no sugar is added. It is still 11 g, which is why this page keeps returning to the idea of a measured amount at a meal rather than a drink left within reach.

Figures are averages, as fruit panels always are. The reference intake figure of 100 percent is the one carried by this product for vitamin C per 100 ml.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in it

Gluten-free, with no allergen declared

HiPP states this juice is gluten-free, with no added sugars, no artificial additives, no preservatives and no GMO ingredients. No allergen is declared for it. Check the panel on your bottle before first use, because artwork is revised from time to time.

On the label

What the bottle is built from

Organically grown apples, from concentrates, with vitamin C. HiPP states the juice is made specifically for babies and is produced under its European organic standards.

From concentrates is HiPP's own description of this product. It means the juice was concentrated after pressing and reconstituted, which is ordinary practice for a shelf-stable juice and is declared rather than hidden.

We have not been able to source a verified, quantified ingredient declaration for this bottle, so we do not print one. The full list is on the label. No ingredient and no percentage has been guessed at to fill the gap, and if you would like the declaration added to this page, send us a photograph of the label and we will transcribe it.

Vitamin C is present at 25 mg per 100 ml, which is 100 percent of the daily reference intake. The two authorized statements for it are that it contributes to the normal function of the immune system and that it increases iron absorption. Nothing further is claimed for it here.

Read plainly, this is apple juice with vitamin C and nothing else of substance. The short list is the point of a baby juice: one fruit, one vitamin, and nothing added to sweeten, color or preserve it.

Yield

How much each bottle holds

A juice needs no preparation, so the yield is the volume in the bottle. Both sizes carry their US fluid-ounce equivalent on this product, so there is nothing to convert.

Bottle Volume In fluid ounces Vitamin C in the bottle
Small 200 ml 6.76 fl oz about 50 mg
Large 500 ml 16.9 fl oz about 125 mg
Prepared yield the same the same ready to drink
Servings per bottle Not stated Not stated No published serving size

How many servings each bottle gives depends on the amount you pour, and no published serving size for this product could be sourced, so we have not divided the volume into a count. The vitamin C totals above are the 25 mg per 100 ml figure multiplied by the bottle volume, which is arithmetic rather than a separate measurement.

The 200 ml and 500 ml volumes and their fluid-ounce equivalents are the sizes carried by this product. Nothing is added to the juice, so the prepared yield is the bottle volume.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

From what age can my baby have it?

From 4 months, which is the age carried by this product, and HiPP also describes it as suitable for small children. At the younger end of that range a juice is a taste and a vitamin C source rather than something a baby needs, so it is worth raising with your pediatrician before you start.

Does it need diluting?

It is sold ready to drink rather than as a concentrate you make up. We have not been able to source a published dilution ratio or serving volume for this bottle, so we do not print one. Follow the guidance on the label.

Is it watered down already?

The panel says otherwise. At 12 g of carbohydrate and 11 g of sugars per 100 ml this is juice at ordinary strength. HiPP's word mild describes the low acidity and the gentle taste, not a reduced sugar content.

Does it contain added sugar?

No. HiPP states no sugars are added. The 11 g of sugars per 100 ml on the panel is the apple's own.

Why is vitamin C worth having?

Two authorized reasons. Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system, and it increases the absorption of iron from a meal. The second is why a juice is often served with a cereal or a vegetable dish rather than on its own. This bottle carries 25 mg per 100 ml, a full daily reference intake.

Is it gluten-free?

Yes. HiPP states this juice is gluten-free, and no allergen is declared for it.

Can it replace a milk feed or water?

No. Breast milk or infant formula is what a baby of this age needs, and water is the everyday drink alongside solids. Use this at a meal, in a cup, in a measured amount.

Which size should I buy?

200 ml, which is 6.76 fluid ounces, if juice appears occasionally in your week. 500 ml, which is 16.9 fluid ounces, if it is a regular part of mealtimes and you will use it up while it is fresh.

How long does it keep once opened?

Close it and keep it refrigerated. We cannot quote a number of days, because no published after-opening window for this product could be sourced. Follow the guidance on the label.

Written from the age, bottle sizes, nutrition panel and product statements carried by this product, reproduced above as they stand: the 4 month age and the suitability for small children, the 200 ml and 500 ml sizes with their stated fluid-ounce equivalents of 6.76 and 16.9, the from-concentrates description, the per-100-ml figures of 209 kJ and 49 kcal, 12.0 g carbohydrate, 11.0 g sugars, 0.2 g fiber and 25 mg vitamin C at 100 percent of the daily reference intake, and HiPP's statements that the juice is made from organically grown apples, mild, low in acid, gluten-free and free from added sugars, artificial additives, preservatives and GMO ingredients. The vitamin C statements are the authorized wording for that nutrient and nothing further is claimed for it. The high-in-vitamin-C wording rests on the stated 100 percent of the reference intake per 100 ml. The vitamin C totals per bottle are the stated 25 mg per 100 ml multiplied by the stated volumes. The page states plainly that the panel shows this to be a full-strength juice, because the product copy describes it as mild and that word is about acidity rather than sugar. No quantified ingredient declaration, no serving size, no dilution ratio and no after-opening storage window could be sourced for this bottle: each gap is stated where a parent would look for it and no figure has been estimated in its place.
