FruchtBar Organic Kids Pasta with Vegetables, tomato and spinach, 200 g, from 12 months
FruchtBar Organic Kids Pasta with Vegetables is a dry organic pasta for toddlers, suitable from 12 months. It is a 200 g bag of small pasta shells made from durum wheat semolina at 98.8 percent, with tomato 0.8 percent and spinach 0.4 percent and added vitamin B1. Every ingredient is from controlled organic farming, certified under control body DE-ÖKO-006, and it is made with no added salt. It cooks in about 7 to 9 minutes, and it contains gluten, because it is wheat pasta.
The shell shape is the useful part. A small shell holds sauce, which is exactly what you want when a toddler is getting food from bowl to mouth with a spoon and only partial success. The tomato and spinach give the shells their colour, so the bag looks like three colours of pasta rather than one.
Being straight about the vegetables matters. The tomato and spinach together come to 1.2 percent of the bag. They are organic, they are real, and at that proportion they are a colouring and a light flavouring rather than a serving of vegetables. This pasta is not a way of getting vegetables into a toddler, and we will not suggest otherwise. Serve it with vegetables; do not count it as them.
What it is good at is being a clean, well-made base. Durum wheat semolina is the proper flour for pasta and it is nearly the whole of the bag. The no added salt claim is the one that matters most at this age, because dry pasta, sauces and ready meals are where a toddler's salt usually comes from, and a pasta with none leaves you in control of the rest of the plate.
FruchtBar also states that the environmental and sustainability certifications for this product were selected in collaboration with NABU, the German nature conservation union, and suggests pairing the shells with its own organic tomato sauce. As an organic toddler food it is quick, plain pasta that takes whatever you put on it.

Where it fits
Where this sits in a toddler's week
From 12 months a toddler is eating family food, and a small-shaped pasta is one of the genuinely useful cupboard items. Seven to nine minutes from boiling water to a bowl is faster than most things you can put in front of a hungry one-year-old, and the shells take any sauce you already have.
The way to use it well is as a base. Because there is no salt in it and almost nothing else either, what goes on top does the nutritional work: a vegetable sauce, something with protein in it, a little oil. FruchtBar suggests its own organic tomato sauce; a home-made vegetable sauce does the same job and gives you a real vegetable serving alongside.
On the 12-month age: this is wheat pasta, so it brings gluten, and it needs to be cooked soft enough to be safe for a child still learning to chew. Shells help, because they are small and they soften through, but cooked-soft matters more than shape. If your child has not had wheat before, introduce it on its own rather than in a bowl of sauce.
Pasta is not a vegetable serving
At 1.2 percent, the tomato and spinach in this bag are colour. An earlier version of this listing talked about the goodness of organic tomatoes and spinach, which overstates what 1.2 percent of a bag can do. It is organic pasta with a little vegetable in it for colour, and that is a perfectly good thing to be.
Cooking it
How to cook the pasta shells
Read this before the first bowl
Cook the shells until they are properly soft, which for a toddler matters more than cooking them al dente. Drain well and check the temperature before serving, because pasta holds heat and a bowl that feels warm on the outside can still be hot in the middle. Never leave a young child alone with a bowl of hot food, and always supervise a child who is eating.

ResealKeep the bag dry
1
Bring water to the boil
A good quantity of water in a large pan. Do not add salt: the point of a no-added-salt pasta is lost if you salt the cooking water.
2
Add the shells and stir
Tip them in and stir once or twice in the first minute. Small shapes stick together if they sit on the bottom undisturbed.
3
Cook for 7 to 9 minutes
That is the cooking time given for this pasta. For a toddler, go to the longer end of it rather than the shorter.
4
Check one before you drain
Lift a shell out, cool it and squash it between your fingers. If there is any firmness left in the middle, give it another minute.
5
Drain well
FruchtBar's instruction is to drain it well. Water left inside the shells thins whatever sauce you add and makes the bowl harder to manage.
6
Serve at the right temperature
Spread it out to cool, test it yourself, then serve. Reseal the opened bag afterwards and keep it dry at room temperature.
Contains gluten. This is dry pasta and must be cooked. Wheat is the declared allergen. Cook for 7 to 9 minutes until properly soft, drain well, and check the temperature yourself before serving. One European retailer's listing for this product describes it as ready to eat; that is wrong for a dry pasta and should be disregarded. Never leave a young child alone with hot food.
The vegetables
How much vegetable is actually in it
This is the number worth seeing laid out, because the name and the colour both suggest more than the declaration does.

Ingredients and nutrition
What is in it
Contains gluten
This is pasta made from durum wheat semolina, so it contains gluten and wheat is the declared allergen. No gluten-free claim is made for it and none should be read into it.
*from controlled organic farming. Organic control body: DE-ÖKO-006.
Allergens: cereals containing gluten, namely wheat. No milk, egg, nut, soya or celery ingredient appears in the list. Read the declaration printed on the bag you receive, because recipes are revised from time to time and the bag in your hand governs.
No added salt. The product is described as plant-based and as vegetarian, and no animal ingredient appears in the declaration; no certified vegan claim is made for it and none should be read into it. FruchtBar states that the environmental and sustainability certifications for this product were selected in collaboration with NABU, Naturschutzbund Deutschland e. V.

These are the figures published for this product, for the dry pasta rather than the cooked weight. Dry pasta roughly doubles or more in weight as it cooks, so a cooked portion carries proportionally less of each figure per 100 g. The 0.01 g of salt is what the no-added-salt claim looks like on a panel.

We do not state how many toddler portions a bag makes. No portion size is published for this product, and a toddler's pasta portion varies enormously from one week to the next, so any figure would be invented. Dry pasta expands considerably on cooking, so a small dry weight goes further than it looks.
The 200 g net weight is the figure shown for this product and is corroborated by a European retailer listing it. No number of portions per bag is stated, because none is published.

Questions parents ask
Frequently asked questions
From what age can my child have it?
From 12 months, which is the age on this product. It is wheat pasta, so it brings gluten, and it needs cooking soft enough for a child still learning to chew.
Does it count as a vegetable portion?
No. The tomato and spinach together are 1.2 percent of the bag and are there for colour and a light flavour. Serve it with vegetables rather than counting it as them.
How long do I cook it for?
Seven to nine minutes in boiling water, then drain well. For a toddler, go to the longer end of that. One retailer's listing calls this product ready to eat, which is wrong for a dry pasta.
Is it gluten-free?
No. It is made from durum wheat semolina at 98.8 percent, so it contains gluten and wheat is the declared allergen.
Should I salt the cooking water?
Not for a toddler. The point of a no-added-salt pasta is undone if you salt the water. The panel shows 0.01 g of salt per 100 g dry.
Is it vegan?
It is described as plant-based and as vegetarian, and no animal ingredient appears in the declaration, but no certified vegan claim is made for it and we will not upgrade one ourselves.
What is the vitamin B1 for?
It is declared on the ingredient list, without a percentage. We do not state a reason or a benefit for it, because none is published for this product.
What is the NABU reference about?
FruchtBar states that the environmental and sustainability certifications for this product were selected in collaboration with NABU, the German nature conservation union. That is a statement about how the certifications were chosen, not a certification in itself.
What is the difference between this and the heart noodles?
Shape and vegetables. This one is shells with tomato and spinach at 1.2 percent; the heart noodles are hearts with carrot, beetroot and tomato at 1.3 percent. Both are 200 g, from 12 months, and no added salt.
Written from the ingredient declaration, nutrition panel, organic certification and cooking instruction published for this product. The age and the 200 g pack size shown on this page are taken from the product itself and are corroborated by a European retailer. The 7-to-9-minute cooking time is the one carried by this listing's own pack instruction; a European retailer that describes this product as ready to eat is contradicted in the body rather than followed, because a dry durum pasta must be cooked. The plant-based and vegetarian descriptions are reproduced as published, and no certified vegan claim is made even though an earlier version of this listing used the word vegan. A superlative about quality and freshness carried by that earlier version has been removed. No portion count per bag is stated, because none is published. Last reviewed 15 October 2026.
