What it is

HiPP Face Sunmilk, Sunscreen SPF 50+, for sensitive to normal facial skin

HiPP Face Sunmilk is a face sunscreen at SPF 50+, developed by HiPP for sensitive to normal facial skin. It is water resistant, it is made to be applied generously and re-applied through the day, and it is the face product in HiPP's sun range rather than a whole-body lotion.

A face sunscreen exists because a face is the hardest part to cover and the part that stays uncovered. Arms and legs go under clothes; a face does not. So the useful thing about a dedicated baby and child face sunscreen is that it is formulated to sit on cheeks, nose and forehead without running into eyes as soon as a child gets warm.

SPF 50+ is the highest band European labelling allows, and it is what HiPP has set this product at. The filter system on the panel is an organic filter one, built from seven UV filters working together rather than from a single filter at high concentration. There is no titanium dioxide and no zinc oxide on the panel, so this is not a mineral sunscreen and it will not leave a white cast.

It is also water resistant, which is the specification that matters on a child who will be in and out of water all afternoon. Water resistant is not waterproof, and HiPP's own instruction reflects that: re-apply several times to maintain protection, and particularly after being in water. The care ingredient on the panel is sweet almond oil, listed as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil, with vitamin E as tocopherol.

It absorbs rather than sitting on the surface, and HiPP asks you to let it absorb completely before dressing, because a sunscreen of this kind can mark fabric while it is still wet. As a German sun care product this is the face item in the HiPP range, meant to be used alongside a body lotion rather than instead of one.

Whose skin it suits

Whose skin this is for, and how it fits the sun day

HiPP develops this one for sensitive to normal facial skin, and this store lists it as suitable from the first day of life. That is the product's stated range, and it is the range to work from.

It is worth saying plainly how sunscreen fits a very young baby, because sunscreen is the last line rather than the first. General practice with babies in the first months is to keep them out of direct sun altogether — shade, a canopy, a hat, long sleeves — rather than to put them in the sun with cream on. Sunscreen is for the face that cannot be covered and the sun that cannot be avoided. That is general sun-safety practice rather than an instruction from HiPP, and if you are unsure about sunscreen on a very young baby, ask your pediatrician.

It is a face product. HiPP makes a separate body lotion for the rest, and the two are meant to be used together on a full day outside. Using a face product on a whole body works but empties a small tube quickly; using a body lotion on a face is the swap that more often ends in stinging eyes.

One thing to check before you buy: the panel carries sweet almond oil and Alcohol Denat. Read the panel before first use if nut allergy is something your family watches for, or if alcohol on the skin is something you avoid.

If you want cover for the whole body too

This tube is the face one. HiPP Sun Protection Lotion SPF 50 Ultra Sensitive, 200 ml is the from-birth body lotion, and HiPP Baby Soft Sun Spray SPF 50 is the spray for covering ground quickly. Each is a separate HiPP product with its own filter system and its own ingredient panel, so check the one printed on what you buy.

Using it

How to apply it

Read this before the first use

Avoid contact with the eyes. Applying too little reduces the protection you actually get, which is the single most common way a high SPF underperforms — HiPP states this directly. Do not stay in the sun for long even with sunscreen on, keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight, and re-apply after being in water. For external use only. Keep out of the reach of children.

Shake firstBefore every use
GenerouslyThin layers underprotect
Before sunNot once outside
Re-applySeveral times, and after water
1

Shake the bottle well

HiPP's first instruction for this product is to shake well before use. A milk-type sunscreen separates on standing, and an unshaken bottle does not deliver the filter mix the SPF was tested on.

2

Apply before going out

Put it on before sun exposure rather than once you are already outside. Give it time to absorb, which is also what stops it marking clothes.

3

Apply generously

HiPP is explicit that small amounts reduce protection. SPF is measured at a specific thickness, so a thin smear of an SPF 50+ does not give SPF 50+ protection. Err on the side of too much.

4

Keep it clear of the eyes

Work around the eye area rather than over it, and stop short of the lash line. If any gets in, rinse with clean water.

5

Let it absorb completely

HiPP asks you to let it absorb fully to prevent stains on textiles. That wait is also when the film evens out, so it is worth the minute it takes before a hat or a shirt goes on.

6

Re-apply through the day

Apply several times to maintain protection, especially after being in water. Re-applying does not extend the time you can safely stay out; it restores the protection you started with.

The shake-well, apply-generously, absorb-fully and re-apply instructions above are HiPP's own application text for this product, as carried on this listing. The surrounding sun-safety points are general practice rather than manufacturer instructions.

No sunscreen blocks all UV radiation. Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight. Applying too little sharply reduces the protection you get. Water resistant does not mean waterproof: re-apply after being in water. Avoid the eyes, keep out of reach of children, and check the panel on your bottle before first use.
What is in it

What is in HiPP Face Sunmilk

The full panel for this product is below, followed by the part most people actually want: which entries are the UV filters.

Contains sweet almond oil, and alcohol

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil is sweet almond oil, which is the care oil in this formula. Read the panel before use if nut allergy is a concern in your family. Alcohol Denat. is also on the panel, which is ordinary in a sunscreen of this type but worth knowing if you avoid alcohol on the skin.

Allergens: contains sweet almond as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil. No Parfum entry appears on this panel. A cosmetic carries no statutory allergen declaration, so this is a read-the-label note and not a declaration. Names are given in INCI form, as printed.

This panel is the one carried on this listing for this product. HiPP's own German product page for this item could not be retrieved while this page was written, so it has not been re-checked against the manufacturer's current published list. The panel printed on the bottle you receive is the one that governs, and sunscreen formulations are revised from time to time.

The UV filters on this panel

On the panel What it is Covers

Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane An organic UV filter, also known as avobenzone UVA
Ethylhexyl Salicylate An organic UV filter UVB
Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate An organic UV filter UVA
Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine An organic broad-spectrum UV filter UVA and UVB
Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid A water-soluble organic UV filter UVB
Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone An organic UV filter UVB
Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil Sweet almond oil, the care oil Not a filter
Tocopherol Vitamin E Not a filter
Glycerin Draws water into the skin Not a filter

The seven filters above are the UV filter entries on this panel; the remaining entries are the base, the texture and the care ingredients. There is no titanium dioxide and no zinc oxide on this panel, so this is an organic-filter sunscreen rather than a mineral one. The SPF 50+ rating belongs to the finished product as tested by HiPP, not to any single filter in it.

What is left out

What is and is not on this panel

Sun care is a category where exclusion lists get repeated loosely, so this section states only what can be checked against the panel above.

  • No Parfum on the panel
  • No parabens on the panel
  • No mineral oil on the panel
  • No titanium dioxide or zinc oxide
  • Organic filter system
  • With sweet almond oil
  • With vitamin E as tocopherol
  • Water resistant

These are read directly off the ingredient panel above rather than quoted as manufacturer claims, and they describe the panel carried on this listing. Absence from a panel is not the same as a manufacturer's formal free-from claim.

What is not claimed for this product

No hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, organic, certified-organic, natural, waterproof, dermatologically-tested, reef-safe or sensitive-skin-tested claim is made for this sunscreen, and none should be read into it. HiPP makes no claim about any skin condition for it, and neither do we.

An earlier version of this listing described the product as hypoallergenic and as containing organic sunflower oil and organic beeswax. Neither sunflower oil nor beeswax appears anywhere on this product's ingredient panel, and no hypoallergenic claim could be confirmed from HiPP's own literature, so all three statements have been removed rather than carried forward. The sunflower-oil and beeswax wording belongs to other products in HiPP's sun range, not to this one.

Pack size

What you get

This listing is one bottle of HiPP Face Sunmilk at SPF 50+.

The fill volume is not stated anywhere on this listing — not in the title, the variant or the product data — and it could not be confirmed from HiPP's own published information while this page was written. Rather than print a figure that might be wrong on a product where quantity matters, no volume is given here. Check the bottle itself, which carries the fill volume on the label.

What can usefully be said is how much you need, which is the part people get wrong: a high SPF only delivers its rating at a proper thickness, so plan on using more than feels necessary and on re-applying several times across a day outside.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply it?

Shake well, apply generously before going out, keep it clear of the eyes, let it absorb completely so it does not mark clothes, and apply several times through the day to maintain protection, especially after being in water. Those are HiPP's own instructions for this product.

Can I use it on a very young baby?

This store lists it as suitable from the first day of life. General sun-safety practice with a baby in the first months is still to keep them out of direct sun rather than to rely on sunscreen, so treat it as cover for a face that cannot be shaded. If you are unsure, ask your pediatrician.

Is it a mineral sunscreen?

No. There is no titanium dioxide and no zinc oxide on the panel. It uses seven organic UV filters, which is why it absorbs without leaving a white cast.

Is it waterproof?

It is water resistant, which is not the same thing. HiPP's own instruction is to re-apply after being in water, and that is the instruction to follow.

Does it contain nuts?

It contains sweet almond oil, listed on the panel as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil. Read the full panel before use if nut allergy is a concern in your family.

Does it contain fragrance?

No Parfum entry appears on the panel carried for this product. HiPP does not sell it with a formal fragrance-free claim, so we do not make one either; check the panel on your bottle.

How big is the bottle?

The fill volume is not published on this listing and could not be confirmed from HiPP's own information, so we do not state one. The volume is printed on the bottle.

Can I use it on the body as well?

It would work, but it is formulated and sized as a face product. HiPP makes a separate body lotion and a body spray, and those are the sensible ones for covering arms, legs and shoulders.

The rest of the HiPP sun and skin care range

Written from the application instructions and the ingredient panel carried on this listing for HiPP Face Sunmilk SPF 50+, which are HiPP's own text for this product, together with what the panel itself shows. HiPP's own German product page for this item could not be retrieved while this page was written, and the dm.de listing serves its content through scripting the page reader cannot read, so the panel and the claim block have not been re-checked against the manufacturer's current published list; the panel on your bottle governs. The SPF 50+ rating, the face and sensitive-to-normal-skin positioning and the age are taken from the product itself. A hypoallergenic claim and a statement that the product contains organic sunflower oil and organic beeswax have been removed, because neither oil nor beeswax appears on this product's panel and the hypoallergenic claim could not be confirmed. No fill volume is stated, because none is published on this listing. The UV filter identifications and the absence of mineral filters, Parfum, parabens and mineral oil are read off the panel above rather than quoted as manufacturer claims.
