Zebra Beet - Holle Organic Fruit Puree Pouch, Apple and Banana with Beetroot, 100 g, from the 6th month
Zebra Beet is a Holle organic fruit puree pouch for babies from the 6th month. It is apple and banana with beetroot juice, nothing else, in a 100 g resealable pouch. The fruit is Demeter grade, which is the biodynamic tier above EU Organic, and the pouch is gluten-free, vegan and made with no added sugar.
What makes Zebra Beet different from the rest of the range is the beetroot. It is only 10 percent of the pouch and it arrives as a juice rather than as pulp, so it reads as colour and a faint earthiness rather than as a vegetable flavour. Apple at 70 percent and banana at 20 percent carry the taste, which is why a baby who has taken apple and banana happily will usually take this without noticing the change.
That is the useful thing about it. Introducing a root vegetable on its own is a hard sell at six months, and a pouch that is nine parts familiar fruit to one part beetroot is a gentler way in. The deep red colour is also worth knowing about in advance, because it goes through a baby unchanged and can be alarming in a nappy the first time.
Everything in it is certified. The apple and banana are Demeter, Holle's biodynamic standard, and the beetroot juice is organic. Holle states the pouch carries no added sugar, no salt, no spices and no flavourings, with a footnote that it naturally contains the sugar from the fruit itself. There is no thickener, no starch and no grain in this one.
Because there is no cereal in the recipe, Zebra Beet is gluten-free and lactose-free, and Holle lists it as vegan. That matters more than it sounds at six months, when grains are usually still being introduced one at a time: a fruit pouch with no cereal in it does not use up one of those slots.
As an organic baby snack it is built for portability rather than for a meal. The pouch is shelf-stable until you open it, it needs no spoon of its own, no warming and no water, and it goes in a changing bag without a cool pack. At home it is as useful stirred into a bowl of plain porridge or yoghurt as it is on its own.

Where it fits
Where this pouch sits in the weaning day
From the 6th month this is a between-meals pouch rather than a meal. One 100 g pouch is a snack-sized portion of fruit, and at six months a baby is still getting the bulk of what they need from milk, so a pouch like this sits alongside that rather than replacing any of it.
It is a reasonable early pouch because the list is short and the two leading fruits are the two most babies meet first. If apple and banana have both already been given on their own and taken well, the only genuinely new thing in Zebra Beet is the beetroot juice, and it is a tenth of the pouch. That is about as small a step as a new ingredient comes.
Later on it keeps earning its place as the easy way to get something other than fruit into a fruit course. Toddlers who have decided against vegetables on a plate will often take beetroot here, where it does not look or taste like beetroot. The pouch does not change as your baby grows; what changes is whether it is the whole snack or a spoonful stirred into something else.
If this would be your baby's first taste of beetroot
Give it on a day when nothing else is new, and expect the colour. Beetroot pigment passes through largely unchanged and can tint a nappy deep red or pink for a day. It is harmless and it is not blood, but it is much less alarming if you are expecting it.
Serving and storage
How to serve it, and how to store it once opened
Spoon it out, do not let your baby suck on the pouch
Holle's own note on this pouch is to feed the puree with a spoon and not to let a child suck on the pouch continuously, because prolonged sucking on any sweet puree is what causes tooth decay. Keep the screw cap out of reach of children, because a cap this size is a choking hazard. The pouch needs no cooking, no water and no warming.
Once opened, this pouch keeps in the fridge for 2 days. Unopened it is shelf-stable, which is the point of a pouch: it travels in a changing bag without a cool pack.

1
Check the pouch first
Look the pouch over before you open it. The cap should be sealed and the pouch should be firm rather than puffed. If it has been punctured in a bag, do not use it.
2
Shake it, then unscrew the cap
A puree can separate slightly in the pouch. A short shake before you open it evens out the texture and saves you stirring the bowl.
3
Squeeze it into a bowl
Squeeze the portion you want into a bowl or onto a plate rather than feeding from the spout. That is how Holle writes it, and it also lets you see how much your baby has actually taken.
4
Put the cap somewhere safe
The screw cap is small enough to be a choking hazard. Holle states plainly that it should be kept out of reach of children, so it goes on the counter, not on the tray.
5
Spoon-feed at your baby's pace
Offer it from the spoon and let your baby set the speed. A pouch fed by squeezing goes down far faster than a baby would take it from a spoon, which is the habit the tooth-decay note is about.
6
Refrigerate or discard the rest
Cap what is left, put it in the fridge, and use it within 2 days. Do not keep a pouch your baby has fed directly from.

Keep the screw cap out of reach. It is a small part and Holle calls it out specifically. Feed this puree with a spoon, and do not let your baby suck on the pouch continuously, because that is what causes tooth decay. Do not use a pouch that is swollen, leaking or past its date.
By percentage
What is in the pouch, by percentage
Three things, and the percentages tell you most of what you need to know about how it will taste. Apple is the body of it, banana is the sweetness and the thickness, and the beetroot juice is colour and a background note.

The beetroot juice component is itself beetroot juice with a little lemon juice, the beetroot being about 95 percent of that 10 percent. Lemon juice is there as the only acidity regulator in the pouch. Percentages are Holle's own for this product.
Ingredients and allergens
What is in it
Gluten-free, lactose-free and vegan, as declared
Holle declares this pouch gluten-free and lactose-free and lists it as vegan. There is no cereal, no milk and no egg in the recipe, and no allergen appears in capital letters in the ingredient list.
Holle's standing allergy note applies: for the EU 14 major food allergens, including cereals containing gluten, see ingredients in capital letters, if any. In this pouch there are none.
* from biodynamic farming. ** from organic farming.
Reproduced from the ingredient declaration printed on this pouch. Holle's own current product page gives the same three percentages and expresses the beetroot as 9.5 percent of the whole pouch, which is the same figure written the other way round. The panel printed on the pouch you receive is the one that governs.
No added sugar: Holle states the pouch contains no added sugar, salt, spices or flavourings, footnoted to say it naturally contains sugars. That sugar is the fruit's own.

Portions
What one 100 g pouch gives you
A pouch is a portion, so there is no yield to calculate. The question is how it fits a day rather than how far it stretches.

Holle does not publish a portion count for this pouch, so the splits above are arithmetic on the 100 g pack size rather than a manufacturer figure. The fridge life is Holle's own: 2 days after opening. A pouch your baby has fed from directly should not be kept.

Questions parents ask
Frequently asked questions
From what age can my baby have Zebra Beet?
From the 6th month, which is the age on this product and the age Holle publishes for it.
Is it gluten-free?
Yes. Holle declares this pouch gluten-free, and there is no cereal of any kind in the ingredient list.
Does it contain added sugar?
No sugar is added. Holle states the pouch has no added sugar, salt, spices or flavourings, and footnotes that it naturally contains sugars, which come from the apple and the banana.
What is Demeter, and is this pouch Demeter?
Demeter is the biodynamic certification, a stricter standard that sits above EU Organic. The apple and banana in this pouch are Demeter grade; the beetroot juice is organic.
Can my baby feed straight from the pouch?
Holle's instruction is to feed the puree with a spoon and not to let a child suck on the pouch continuously, because prolonged sucking on a sweet puree is what causes tooth decay. Squeeze it into a bowl and spoon it.
How long does it keep once opened?
Two days in the fridge with the cap back on. Unopened it does not need refrigerating at all, which is why it travels well.
Will the beetroot change the colour of my baby's nappy?
It can. Beetroot pigment passes through largely unchanged and may tint a nappy red or pink for a day. It is harmless, and worth knowing before it happens.
Is it vegan?
Yes. Holle lists this pouch as vegan, and it is also declared lactose-free. There is no milk, egg or honey in it.
Written from the ingredient, allergen and storage declarations printed on this pouch, checked against Holle's own published product page for Zebra Beet - Apple and banana with beetroot. The age and the 100 g pack size are taken from the product itself. Portion splits are arithmetic on that pack size, and are identified as such, because Holle publishes no portion count for this pouch. Last reviewed 17 October 2026.
