Starch-Free Baby Formula

Starch-free baby formula uses lactose as its carbohydrate rather than added starch or maltodextrin. Lactose is the sugar naturally present in breast milk, and a formula that relies on it alone is the closest match to that carbohydrate profile.

Why some parents look for it

• Closer to breast milk. Breast milk’s carbohydrate is lactose. A lactose-only formula matches that rather than substituting part of it.
• Simpler ingredient list. Fewer added carbohydrates to read past on the label.
• No thickening effect. Starch makes a formula sit heavier. Parents who found a previous formula too filling sometimes move to a lactose-only one.

What starch-free does not mean

It does not mean lactose-free — the opposite, in fact. These formulas contain more lactose, not less, so they are not the right choice if your pediatrician has advised reducing lactose.

It also does not mean better. Starch and maltodextrin are safe, approved carbohydrates, and some babies settle more comfortably on a formula containing them. Neither approach is superior; they suit different babies.

Questions parents ask

How do I tell from the pack? Read the carbohydrate line in the nutrition table. If total carbohydrate and total sugars are the same number, there is no starch or maltodextrin in it.

Is starch-free the same as no added sugar? Close, but not identical. Starch is not a sugar. A formula can be starch-free and still contain added sugars, though none in this collection does.
