What is HiPP Comfort UK baby formula?
HiPP Comfort UK is a UK-market specialist infant milk for babies from birth to 12 months, built around partially hydrolysed whey protein and reduced lactose for the dietary management of colic and constipation. HiPP classifies it as a food for special medical purposes, to be used under medical supervision. This listing is a single 800 g can — about 210 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 42 five-ounce bottles.
The mechanism is worth understanding before you buy, because it is the whole point of the can. In a standard first infant milk the whey protein arrives intact and your baby's gut does all the breaking down. Here the protein is hydrolysed — already partly broken into smaller fragments before it reaches the bottle. The lactose is reduced too, to 2.7 g per 100 ml out of 7.0 g of total carbohydrate, with maltodextrin making up the balance. Added to that is beta-palmitate, a structured fat designed to support softer stools, and GOS prebiotic fibre.
Comfort's ingredient list is deliberately different from HiPP's standard first milks, and it should not be read as a cleaner-label version of them. It contains maltodextrin alongside lactose, it contains palm oil, and it uses hydrolysed rather than intact protein. Those are the mechanism, not a compromise — but they are a genuine departure from the lactose-only, organic-certified HiPP Organic Combiotic cans.
On that point we want to be straight with you rather than convenient. HiPP's own UK product title for this milk is "HiPP Comfort Baby Milk Powder from birth" — without the word Organic that HiPP's UK Stage 1 and Stage 2 titles both carry. We have not been able to confirm an organic certification for this specific can, so we do not claim one anywhere on this page. Read the certification mark printed on the can you receive as the final word.
This is the can parents usually reach for when a baby is windy, straining or crying through feeds on a standard formula and no allergy has been diagnosed. One formulation covers the whole first year, so there is no stage switch at six months. It is not an allergy formula, and it is not a substitute for a conversation with your health visitor or doctor.

What is not in HiPP Comfort UK?
No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, no GMO ingredients, no added starch and no soy. Be equally clear about what is in it, though: HiPP Comfort UK contains maltodextrin alongside lactose, it contains palm oil, and it is reduced-lactose rather than lactose-free — 2.7 g of lactose remains in every 100 ml.

Comparison
How does HiPP Comfort UK compare to HiPP Comfort German and Aptamil Comfort?
All three are partially hydrolysed, reduced-lactose formulas for colic and constipation, and none of the three is a treatment for a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. HiPP Comfort UK has the shortest carbohydrate list of the three; the German HiPP Comfort adds starch but also a live culture; Aptamil Comfort adds two starches and FOS alongside GOS.
Being straight with you: the German box is the one with the live culture. HiPP Comfort German carries L. fermentum hereditum; this UK can carries GOS prebiotic only. It is also a 600 g box against this one's 800 g, so compare prepared fluid ounces rather than shelf price. Aptamil Comfort is the most clinically documented of the three, pairs FOS with GOS and carries more DHA — but it contains soya lecithin and two added starches, which this can does not. Where HiPP Comfort UK stands out is the shorter carbohydrate list — lactose and maltodextrin, with no added starch — plus beta-palmitate in the fat blend. On organic certification we can claim nothing here: HiPP's own UK title for this milk omits the word Organic that its Stage 1 and Stage 2 titles carry, and the German Comfort is confirmed not organic — HiPP's own explanation is that legislation does not allow its specialist milks to be certified organic. That is why the first cell of this table reads "Not confirmed" rather than yes or no.
Planning ahead
How many cans of formula will my baby need per month?
One 800 g can of HiPP Comfort UK makes about 210 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 42 five-ounce bottles. A baby fed exclusively on Comfort typically uses around 4 cans a month, though the real figure depends almost entirely on how much your baby drinks per day.
The bars below convert daily intake into cans, using this can's own yield. Because Comfort is often trialled rather than committed to, it is worth starting with a single can and seeing how your baby settles over a week or two before you stock ahead.

Preparation
How do you prepare HiPP Comfort UK?
Boil fresh water and let it cool for no more than 30 minutes so it is still at least 70 °C, pour the measured water into a sterilised bottle first, add one level scoop of about 4.3 g for every 30 ml of water, shake for roughly 15 seconds until fully dissolved, cool to 37 °C and feed straight away.

1
Sterilise first
Sterilise the bottle, teat, cap and scoop before every feed, and wash your hands.
2
Boil and cool
Boil fresh drinking water and let it stand no more than 30 minutes, so it is still at least 70 °C when it meets the powder.
3
Water into the bottle first
Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.
4
Add level scoops
Add one level scoop for every 30 ml of water — three scoops to 90 ml, for example — levelling each scoop against the edge of the can.
5
Cap and shake
Cap the bottle and shake for about 15 seconds, until no powder is left clinging to the sides.
6
Cool, test, feed
Cool under running water to about 37 °C, test a drop on the inside of your wrist, and feed straight away.
Never use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled more than once. Make up a fresh bottle for every feed, never batch-prepare or store made-up bottles for later, never reheat, never microwave, and throw away any prepared formula your baby does not finish.
A note on water temperature. HiPP specifies water at 70 °C or hotter, which matches NHS and WHO guidance for powdered formula — powder is not sterile, and that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. Let the bottle cool to body temperature before feeding, and always test a drop on the inside of your wrist first.
Please read before buying
HiPP classifies Comfort as a food for special medical purposes, for the dietary management of colic and constipation, and it should be used under medical supervision. It is not a treatment for a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy — the whey protein here is partially hydrolysed, not extensively hydrolysed, and a baby with diagnosed CMPA needs a different tier of formula entirely. It contains milk and it contains fish. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.
Store cans in a cool, dry place. Once opened, keep the can closed and use the powder within the period printed on the pack. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.
Packaging & cans
This is the UK-market can — 800 g, labelled in English. HiPP's German Comfort box is 600 g and a different recipe: it adds starch to the carbohydrate blend and carries a live L. fermentum hereditum culture. If you are comparing the two, compare prepared fluid ounces rather than the price on the pack.
Questions parents ask
HiPP Comfort UK: frequently asked questions
What is HiPP Comfort UK for?
HiPP positions Comfort for the dietary management of colic, constipation and wind from birth. It works by two mechanisms: the whey protein is partially hydrolysed, meaning it arrives already partly broken into smaller fragments, and the lactose is reduced to 2.7 g per 100 ml with maltodextrin making up the rest of the carbohydrate. Beta-palmitate in the fat blend is included to support softer stools. HiPP classifies it as a food for special medical purposes, so use it under medical supervision.
Is HiPP Comfort UK organic?
We cannot confirm that it is, so we do not claim it. HiPP's own UK product title for this milk is "HiPP Comfort Baby Milk Powder from birth", without the word Organic that HiPP's UK Stage 1 and Stage 2 titles both carry. The related German HiPP Comfort box is confirmed not organic-certified; HiPP's own explanation is that legislation does not allow its specialist milks to be certified organic. If organic certification is your priority, HiPP's Organic Combiotic Stage 1 and Stage 2 cans are the certified products in this brand's UK range.
Is HiPP Comfort UK suitable for a cow's milk protein allergy?
No. Comfort uses partially hydrolysed whey protein, which is a different and much gentler intervention than the extensively hydrolysed formulas used to manage diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. A baby with diagnosed or strongly suspected CMPA needs an extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed and supervised by a doctor. If you suspect an allergy rather than ordinary colic, speak to your GP or health visitor before changing formula.
Is HiPP Comfort lactose-free?
It is reduced-lactose, not lactose-free. Every 100 ml of prepared feed still contains 2.7 g of lactose out of 7.0 g total carbohydrate, with maltodextrin supplying the balance. That matters: a baby with a genuine lactose intolerance, which is rare in infancy, would not be adequately served by a reduced-lactose product. Ask your doctor if lactose is the specific concern rather than general digestive discomfort.
Can I use HiPP Comfort UK from birth, and for how long?
Yes, from birth, and one formulation covers the whole first year to 12 months — there is no stage switch at six months the way there is with HiPP's standard Organic Combiotic range. Many families use it as a trial for a few weeks to see whether symptoms settle, then either stay on it or move back to a standard first infant milk. Either path is reasonable; your health visitor can help you judge.
How many bottles does one 800 g can make?
About 210 fl oz of prepared formula per can, which works out at roughly 42 bottles of 5 fl oz. The can is mixed at one level scoop of about 4.3 g per 30 ml of water. Actual bottle counts depend on your baby's feed size, so treat 42 as a planning figure rather than a guarantee.
How is HiPP Comfort UK different from the German HiPP Comfort box?
Three ways. The German box carries a live culture, L. fermentum hereditum, which this UK can does not — the UK version is prebiotic only, with GOS. The German box also includes starch alongside lactose and maltodextrin, where the UK carbohydrate list stops at lactose and maltodextrin. And the German box is 600 g against this one's 800 g, so compare prepared fluid ounces rather than the price on the pack when you are deciding between them.
