What is Aptamil HA 2 formula?

Aptamil HA 2 is a German hydrolyzed follow-on milk for babies from around 6 months, made with partially hydrolysed whey protein, GOS and FOS prebiotic fibres and a Bifidobacterium breve M-16V culture. It continues the allergy-risk-reduction feeding started with Aptamil HA PRE or HA 1 into the weaning stage. This listing is a single 800g box.

A follow-on milk is not a replacement for solid food and not a substitute for breast milk in the first six months. It is a milk feed designed to sit alongside a weaning diet, with the mineral profile a bigger baby needs — and in this case with the same partially hydrolysed whey protein your baby has already been having. If your baby settled on Aptamil HA 1, HA 2 is the step that keeps the protein the same and changes only what needs to change.

The word "hypoallergenic" on the box is narrower than it sounds. It describes protein that has been broken into smaller peptides so it is less likely to sensitise a baby who is at risk of allergy. Structurally this is the same recipe family as Aptamil HA 1, with the mineral levels adjusted for an older baby. The protein is partially hydrolysed whey; the gut component is the GOS and FOS prebiotic pair working with the named B. breve M-16V strain; DHA comes from fish oil and ARA from Mortierella alpina oil, which means this is not a vegetarian formula.

Aptamil singles out vitamins A, C and D on this stage. That is a standard, verifiable micronutrient statement rather than a special ingredient — all three have authorised roles in normal immune function, and every EU infant and follow-on formula must contain them. We would rather describe it that way than imply the box does something for immunity that other follow-on milks do not.

The science

What does partially hydrolysed whey protein actually mean?

It means the whey protein has been cut into shorter fragments with enzymes before it reaches your baby — far enough to be less likely to sensitise a baby who is at risk of allergy, and nowhere near far enough to be safe for a baby who already has a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy.

A whole whey protein is a long chain, and an immune system predisposed to allergy can learn to recognise and react to it. Partial hydrolysis shortens the chain into peptides that are harder to flag. That is the mechanism in full, and it is the only claim Aptamil HA 2 makes about allergy.

The tier above matters more at this stage, not less. A baby with diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) needs an extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed by a doctor, and Aptamil's own guidance for this box says HA 2 is not a suitable follow-on milk if an allergy has been diagnosed or is suspected. If something changed when solids started, that is a conversation with your pediatrician rather than a reason to keep going.

The right candidate for HA 2 is a baby of around six months or more, from an allergy-prone family, who has been on an HA formula and has no diagnosis of their own — continuing something that is working while the weaning diet does more of the feeding.

Being straight with you: the pack sizes are not the same, so compare by the ounce — HiPP HA 2 Combiotik is 600g against Aptamil's 800g, and a lower box price is not automatically cheaper formula. HiPP is also the more transparent of the two here: it publishes energy, protein, fat, iron, calcium and DHA per 100ml, where Aptamil's figures for this SKU are ones we have had to mark unconfirmed. Aptamil HA 2's real advantages are the palm-oil-free fat blend and the named B. breve M-16V strain. And if your baby is not yet six months, this is the wrong box — Aptamil HA 1 is the one suitable from birth.

How many boxes of Aptamil HA 2 will my baby need per month?

Roughly 3 to 4 boxes a month around six months, easing back toward 2 to 3 boxes a month by the end of the first year as solid food takes over more of the feeding. One 800g box makes an estimated 185 to 195 fl oz of prepared formula, about 37 to 39 bottles of 5 fl oz.

This is the one stage where the monthly figure goes down rather than up. A six-month-old is still taking most of their calories from milk; a one-year-old eating three meals a day is not. Plan against the band for your baby's current age rather than a flat number.

Preparation

How do you prepare Aptamil HA 2?

Boil fresh water and let it cool to about 104°F (40°C), pour the measured water into a sterilised bottle first, add the number of level scoops the feeding chart on your box gives for your baby's age, shake thoroughly until the powder has completely dissolved, then check the temperature is about 98.6°F (37°C) before you feed.

Sterilise everything

Wash and sterilise the bottle, teat, ring and cap, and wash your hands before you start.

Boil and cool

Boil fresh drinking water for each feed and let it cool to about 104°F (40°C) before the powder goes anywhere near it.

Water into the bottle first

Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.

Add level scoops

Use only the scoop supplied in the box, take the number of scoops the feeding chart gives for your baby's age, and level each one on the scraper edge — never packed or heaped.

Cap and shake

Cap the bottle and shake thoroughly until no powder is left clinging to the sides. Hydrolysed formula can take a little more shaking than a standard one.

Test, then feed

Check the temperature is about 98.6°F (37°C) by testing a drop on your wrist, then feed straight away.

Never use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled more than once. Make a fresh bottle for every feed, never reheat, never microwave, and throw away anything your baby does not finish rather than saving it for later. Always follow the preparation instructions printed on your own box, which are the authoritative version.

A note on water temperature. Aptamil specifies water at about 104°F (40°C) for this formula, and that is the instruction printed on your box. It is set deliberately — hotter water damages the live cultures and heat-sensitive vitamins this formula is built around.

Many health authorities, including the NHS and WHO, advise 70°C or hotter for any powdered formula, because powder is not sterile and that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. The difference matters most for newborns, premature babies, and babies with weakened immunity. If your baby is in one of those groups, ask your paediatrician or health visitor which to follow for your situation.
