What it is

HiPP Sun Protection Lotion SPF50+ Ultra Sensitive, 200 ml, from birth

This is the HiPP baby sun lotion from the Babysanft ultra sensitive line, a European sunscreen for babies and children at SPF 50+ in a 200 ml bottle. HiPP gives the age as 0+ months, so it is a baby sunscreen from birth rather than a product you wait to introduce. It protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and the protection is there as soon as it is on the skin.

The point of the ultra sensitive version is what is not in it. HiPP builds this one without fragrance, and states the recipe carries 0% microplastics, octocrylene and nanoparticles. Skin tolerability has been tested both clinically and by an eye doctor. For a parent choosing a first sunscreen for a newborn or for a child whose skin reacts easily, those are the three things usually being weighed, and HiPP publishes all three.

It is made in Germany, the bottle is recyclable, and it is formulated to sink in rather than sit on top, so it does not leave a tacky film on skin that is about to be dressed. It is a lotion, not a spray, which makes it the easier of the two to control on a small face.

Who this bottle is for

This is for babies from day one and for children, and specifically for sensitive baby skin. HiPP positions the ultra sensitive line for skin that reacts to things other products carry, and the fragrance-free recipe is the main reason. If you have been reading labels looking for a fragrance-free baby sunscreen, this is the one in the HiPP range that carries that claim.

A word on what sunscreen can and cannot do for a very young baby. HiPP's own guidance is that babies, and especially babies under one year, should be kept out of direct sun altogether, that the middle of the day from about 11:00 to 15:00 is worth avoiding, and that shade and clothing come first. Sunscreen is for the skin you cannot cover, not a reason to put a baby in the sun. That is HiPP's position and it is worth stating plainly.

If you would rather have a spray or a face-only cream

The same SPF 50+ protection comes in other formats in this range. There is HiPP BabySoft Sun Spray SPF 50+ for covering arms and legs quickly, and HiPP Face Sun Milk SPF 50+ for the face on its own. Each has its own ingredient panel, so check the one on the bottle you buy.

Using it

How to put it on

The steps below follow HiPP's published application instructions for this product. HiPP does not publish a quantity in millilitres per application or a fixed reapplication interval in hours for this bottle, so no number is given for either.

1

Put it on before you go out

Apply generously and evenly before any sun exposure. Generous is the word HiPP uses, and it matters: a thin layer does not deliver the SPF on the bottle.

2

Do not skip the easy-to-miss places

The face, the nose, the tops of the ears and the back of the neck are the spots that get missed and then burn. Do these before you leave rather than once you are outside.

3

Let it absorb fully

HiPP asks you to let it sink in completely. Besides being more comfortable, this is what keeps it off clothing, which is the usual cause of marks on textiles.

4

Reapply to keep the protection up

Apply it more than once over the day to maintain the protection. Reapplying does not extend the time you can safely stay out; it maintains the level you started with.

5

Always reapply after water

HiPP calls this one out specifically. The lotion is water-resistant, which is not the same as permanent, so after swimming, paddling or towel-drying, put more on.

6

Keep shade and clothing in the plan

A hat, a long-sleeved top and a parasol do more for a baby than any bottle. Use the lotion for the skin that is still showing.

For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, and rinse with clean water if it happens. Keep the bottle out of reach of children and out of the heat. Stop using it if the skin becomes red or irritated, and speak to your doctor or pharmacist if that does not settle. Keep babies, and particularly babies under one year, out of direct sun.
What is in it

What is in HiPP Sun Protection Lotion Ultra Sensitive

The filters in this lotion are all organic UV filters, which is the type that absorbs UV rather than sitting on the surface as a mineral screen does. There are five of them, working across the UVA and UVB range, which is how a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ is built. Alongside them the recipe carries emollients, two forms of vitamin E, and plant-derived thickeners.

Ingredients: Aqua, Dibutyl Adipate, Glycerin, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Propylheptyl Caprylate, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Cera, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, Hydroxyacetophenone, Potassium Hydroxide, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Caprylyl Glycol, Decylene Glycol, Succinoglycan, Tetrasodium Iminodisuccinate, Galactoarabinan, Cellulose Gum, Xanthan Gum, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Tocopherol.

Transcribed from the ingredient panel carried on this listing. It matches HiPP's own published panel for this product entry for entry, which is the strongest corroboration available here. Formulations are revised from time to time, so the panel printed on your bottle is the one that governs. Read it before first use.

On the panel What it is doing
Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate A UVA filter
Ethylhexyl Salicylate A UVB filter
Ethylhexyl Triazone A UVB filter
Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine A broad-spectrum UVA and UVB filter
Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid A water-soluble UVB filter
Glycerin A humectant, holds water in the skin
Tocopheryl Acetate and Tocopherol Vitamin E, used as an antioxidant
Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Cera Rice bran wax, a plant-derived wax
Aqua Water, the base of the lotion

The table names the filters and the main functional ingredients only. It is not the full panel and it is not in panel order; the list above it is complete.

Allergens: this lotion is made without Parfum, and no fragrance appears on the panel. A cosmetic carries no statutory allergen declaration, so read the panel on your own bottle rather than relying on a list online.

What is left out

What HiPP leaves out of it

  • 0% fragrance
  • 0% microplastics
  • 0% octocrylene
  • 0% nanoparticles
  • No animal testing
  • Recyclable bottle

0% microplastics. HiPP's own footnote defines this as a recipe without water-soluble, purely synthetic polymers. No animal testing. HiPP notes that animal testing for cosmetics is prohibited in the EU, so this describes the law as much as the product. Recyclable packaging is certified by HiPP for Germany under the CHI standard, so treat it as a German recycling statement rather than a statement about curbside collection where you live.

What is not claimed for this product

Two claims that have followed this lotion elsewhere are not made here, because HiPP does not publish them on its own page for this bottle today. There is no coral-friendly or reef-safe claim and no reference to the Hawaii reef law, and there is no climate-positive or carbon claim. An older HiPP press release did carry coral-friendly and climate-positive wording for the sun range, but the current product information does not, so neither is stated. There is also no organic certification on this product: it is a cosmetic from HiPP's sensitive skin care line, not a certified organic product, and no EU Organic claim is made for it.

Pack size

What you get in a 200 ml bottle

One 200 ml bottle of lotion. That is the standard size in the HiPP sun range, which also runs to a 50 ml travel bottle and a 30 ml face cream.

What This bottle
Volume 200 ml
Fluid ounces About 6.8 fl oz
Sun protection factor SPF 50+
Protection range UVA and UVB
Age from Birth, 0+ months
Fragrance None
Water resistance Water-resistant
Applications per bottle Not published

About 6.8 fl oz is arithmetic from the 200 ml volume and is given for convenience only. Applications per bottle is left blank on purpose: a sunscreen has to be applied generously and reapplied, HiPP publishes no quantity per application, and how far a bottle goes depends on how much skin is uncovered and how long you are out. A figure here would look precise and would not be. Buy on the basis that a bottle used properly on a family does not last a whole summer.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

From what age can I use it?

From birth. HiPP gives the age as 0+ months for this lotion. That said, HiPP also advises keeping babies under one year out of direct sun, so for a newborn this is for the skin you cannot shade or cover rather than a reason to be out in it.

Is it fragrance-free?

Yes. HiPP makes this one without perfume and states so on the product. There is no Parfum on the ingredient panel. That is the main difference between the ultra sensitive line and a scented sunscreen.

Is it waterproof?

It is water-resistant, which is the claim HiPP makes, and not the same as waterproof. Reapply after swimming, paddling or towel-drying. HiPP singles out time in water as the moment to put more on.

Does it contain octocrylene or nanoparticles?

No. HiPP states the recipe carries 0% octocrylene and 0% nanoparticles, along with 0% microplastics. Those three are published together on the product.

Is it a mineral sunscreen with zinc or titanium?

No. The filters on the panel are organic UV filters. There is no zinc oxide and no titanium dioxide in this lotion. If you are specifically looking for a mineral screen, this is not one.

Will it sting the eyes?

HiPP has had the tolerability of this lotion tested by an eye doctor as well as clinically. Keep it away from the eyes anyway, and rinse with clean water if any gets in.

Does it leave marks on clothes?

HiPP asks you to let it absorb fully before dressing, specifically to prevent marks on textiles. That instruction is on the product and it is the practical answer.

Is it organic, or reef-safe?

Neither claim is made. It is a cosmetic from HiPP's sensitive line and carries no organic certification, and HiPP does not currently publish a coral or reef claim for it, so this page does not either.

How is it different from the sun spray?

Same SPF 50+ and the same fragrance-free approach, different format and a different ingredient panel. The lotion is easier to control on a face; the spray covers arms and legs faster. They are separate products, so check each panel.

Written from HiPP's own published product information for Babysanft Sonne Sonnenmilch LSF 50+, article DA90800, together with the ingredient panel and claim block carried on this listing. The two panels agree entry for entry. The 200 ml pack size and the from-birth age are stated by the site and confirmed by HiPP. SPF 50+, UVA and UVB protection, the water-resistant immediate protection, the fragrance-free recipe, 0% microplastics, octocrylene and nanoparticles, the clinically and eye-doctor-tested tolerability, the recyclable packaging and manufacture in Germany are all HiPP's published claims for this product. Application steps follow HiPP's published instructions; HiPP publishes no quantity per application and no reapplication interval, so neither is stated and no applications-per-bottle figure is given. A coral-friendly or reef-safe claim, a Hawaii reef law reference and a climate-positive claim were all removed: HiPP no longer publishes any of them for this product. Claims of mineral filters, ECOCERT certification and organic status are not made, because HiPP does not make them for this lotion. Last reviewed 24 October 2026.
