What is Holle Stage 4 growing-up milk?

Holle Stage 4 is a German organic growing-up milk for toddlers from 12 months, made with Demeter biodynamic cow's milk. It is a fortified milk drink to sit alongside a varied toddler diet — not an infant formula. This listing is a single 600 g box, about 128 level scoops.

By the time your child turns one, most of their nutrition comes from food on the plate. That is the whole idea behind a toddler growing-up milk: it is a top-up, not a meal. Holle sells it in Germany as Bio-Folgemilch 4, the last step in its cow-milk range after Stage 3.

What sets this box apart from most European toddler formula is the farming standard behind the milk. Holle Stage 4 is certified twice — EU Organic and Demeter, the biodynamic standard. Demeter goes further than organic: closed nutrient cycles on the farm, no synthetic inputs, and herds kept as whole animals rather than to a yield target. Holle has worked to that standard since 1933, and none of the other big European brands carry it.

It is for a toddler 12 months and older who is already eating a mixed diet of solids. If your child is still under one, Holle Stage 3 is the step before this one. If they eat well, drink plain milk happily and have no gaps to fill, you may not need a growing-up milk at all — we would rather say that than sell you a box you do not need.

The honest question

Should I give a growing-up milk or just regular cow's milk?

Either can be right. Plain whole cow's milk is a perfectly good drink for most toddlers over one. A growing-up milk like Holle Stage 4 is fortified — it carries added iron, zinc, vitamin D, B vitamins and DHA that plain milk does not — which is why parents of picky eaters often choose it. It is a convenience, not a medical necessity.

We should be straight about the debate. Several paediatric bodies argue that toddler milk is not medically necessary for a child who is eating a varied diet, and they have a point. A toddler who happily eats meat, beans, eggs, vegetables and fortified cereals is probably getting the same nutrients from food.

Where a growing-up milk genuinely earns its place is narrower, and worth naming: a toddler who is going through a fussy phase and refusing whole food groups; a toddler whose iron intake is low; a family already using Holle who wants to finish the journey with the same milk rather than switch twice; or a toddler moving off Stage 3 who is not ready for the taste and texture of plain cow's milk.

If none of those describe your child, plain whole milk and a good plate of food will do the job. If one or more does, this is a clean, organic, biodynamic way to close the gap.

What's inside

What is in Holle Stage 4?

Holle Stage 4 is built on organic skimmed milk and a whey product, with a vegetable oil blend of palm, rapeseed and sunflower oil, plus starch, maltodextrin and lactose as the carbohydrates. It is fortified with calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, B vitamins and DHA. It contains milk.

The fortification is the point of the product. Iron and zinc are the two nutrients toddlers most often run short of once breastfeeding or formula tapers off, and vitamin D is hard to get from food alone in a northern winter. DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, is included in line with EU labelling rules for growing-up milks in this category.

Holle describes the carbohydrate blend as slow-digesting and bioavailable — the practical read is that starch and maltodextrin alongside lactose give a drink that sits a little heavier and keeps a toddler satisfied longer than plain milk. That is a genuine design choice rather than a filler, but it does mean this is not a lactose-only product, and if that matters to you it is worth knowing before you buy.

The full nutrition panel is printed on your box. We do not publish a per-100 ml table here because the figures we can verify for this specific 600 g German box are not consistent enough across sources for us to stand behind them — the panel on the pack you receive is the authority.

Clean label

What is not in Holle Stage 4?

No GMO ingredients, no artificial colours, no artificial flavours, no artificial preservatives and no synthetic additives. The milk comes from Demeter biodynamic farms, which is a stricter sourcing standard than organic alone.

Being even-handed: this box does contain palm oil in the vegetable oil blend, and it does contain starch and maltodextrin alongside lactose. Neither is hidden on the label and neither is unusual in a growing-up milk, but we would rather you read it here than find it on the box. Contains milk.

Comparison

How does Holle Stage 4 compare to Holle Stage 3 and HiPP Kindermilch 1+?

All three are certified organic 600 g European boxes. Holle Stage 3 and Stage 4 add Demeter biodynamic certification that HiPP does not carry. HiPP Kindermilch 1+ answers back with a lactose-only carbohydrate, a GOS prebiotic and a lactic acid culture that neither Holle box has.

Being straight with you: if the carbohydrate blend is what you care about, HiPP Kindermilch 1+ is the better box — lactose only, no starch and no maltodextrin, plus a GOS prebiotic and a lactic acid culture that Holle Stage 4 does not have. We stock it. What Holle Stage 4 has that HiPP does not is Demeter biodynamic certification on top of EU Organic, a genuinely stricter farming standard. All three boxes here are 600 g, so the price comparison is like for like with no pack-size sleight of hand. And if your toddler is under twelve months, you want Holle Stage 3, not this one.

Planning ahead

How many boxes of Holle Stage 4 will my toddler need per month?

A typical toddler on Holle Stage 4 gets through roughly 2 to 2.5 boxes per month. One 600 g box holds about 128 level scoops of 4.7 g each. How many fluid ounces that makes depends on the mixing ratio in the feeding table printed on your box, so check there rather than working from a single headline number.

Growing-up milk is far more predictable to plan for than infant formula, because a toddler's intake has largely levelled off and most of their calories now come from food. If you offer plain water or cow's milk at some meals, you will land at the lower end of the range.

Estimates for a toddler using growing-up milk alongside a varied solid diet. Every child is different — use these for planning, not as a target.

Preparation

How do you prepare Holle Stage 4?

Boil fresh water and let it cool to about 50°C (122°F), pour the measured water into a clean cup or bottle first, add the number of level scoops shown in the feeding table on your box, shake or stir until fully dissolved, check it feels comfortably warm and serve straight away.

1

Start clean

Wash your hands and use a clean, well-washed cup or bottle. Full sterilising matters less at this age, but clean equipment still does.

2

Boil and cool

Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to about 50°C, or to the temperature printed on your box.

3

Water in first

Pour the measured water into the cup or bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.

4

Add level scoops

Add the number of level 4.7 g scoops shown in the feeding table on your box, levelling each one with the back of a clean knife.

5

Cap and shake

Put the lid on and shake, or stir well, until the powder has completely dissolved with no lumps left.

6

Check, then serve

Test a drop on your wrist so it feels comfortably warm rather than hot, and give it to your toddler straight away.

Never use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled more than once. Make up a fresh drink each time, never reheat, never microwave, and throw away anything left 1 hour after your toddler starts drinking.

A note on water temperature. Holle specifies water at about 50°C for this formula, and that is the instruction printed on your box. It is set deliberately — hotter water damages the heat-sensitive vitamins this formula is built around.

Many health authorities, including the NHS and WHO, advise 70°C or hotter for any powdered formula, because powder is not sterile and that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. The difference matters most for newborns, premature babies, and babies with weakened immunity. If your baby is in one of those groups, ask your paediatrician or health visitor which to follow for your situation.

Please read before buying

Holle Stage 4 is a growing-up milk for toddlers from 12 months. It is not an infant formula and not a replacement for a varied diet — it is a top-up alongside real food. It is made from cow's milk and is not suitable for a child with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. Breastfeeding is best for your baby and there is no need to stop at twelve months — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing any milk.

Store the sealed box in a cool, dry place. Once opened, use within 3–4 weeks. Never reheat or microwave a prepared drink.

Questions parents ask

Holle Stage 4: frequently asked questions

What age is Holle Stage 4 for?

Holle Stage 4 is a growing-up milk for toddlers from 12 months of age and older. It is designed for a child who is already eating a varied diet of solid foods and uses milk as a drink rather than a meal. The stage before it is Holle Stage 3, for babies roughly 10 to 12 months. There is no Stage 5 — Stage 4 is the final step in Holle's German cow-milk range, and most families move on to plain whole cow's milk from here.

Do toddlers actually need growing-up milk?

Not necessarily, and it is worth saying so plainly. Several paediatric bodies argue that toddler milks are not medically necessary for a child eating a varied diet, because the same nutrients are available from food. A growing-up milk is best thought of as a convenient nutritional top-up rather than a requirement. It genuinely helps a fussy eater, a toddler with low iron intake, or a child transitioning off a Stage 3 formula who is not yet taking to plain cow's milk.

Is Holle Stage 4 Demeter certified?

Yes. Holle Stage 4 carries both EU Organic certification and Demeter biodynamic certification, which we have confirmed against German retail listings matching this exact 600 g product. Demeter is a stricter standard than organic alone: it requires closed nutrient cycles on the farm, no synthetic inputs, and herds managed as whole animals rather than to a yield target. Holle has worked to the Demeter standard since 1933 and is the only major European baby-milk brand that does.

How much does one box of Holle Stage 4 make, and how many boxes a month?

One 600 g box holds approximately 128 level scoops of 4.7 g each. The prepared volume depends on the mixing ratio in the feeding table printed on your box, so we point you there rather than publishing a single fluid-ounce figure we cannot verify consistently. For planning purposes, a typical toddler gets through about 2 to 2.5 boxes per month, landing at the lower end if you also offer plain milk or water at some meals.

Can I give Holle Stage 4 to a child with a cow's milk allergy?

No. Holle Stage 4 is made from cow's milk and is not suitable for a child with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. A diagnosed allergy needs a formula prescribed by your doctor, usually an extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid based product. If you suspect an allergy rather than having a diagnosis, speak to your paediatrician before changing milks rather than switching brands on your own.

Does Holle Stage 4 contain palm oil?

Yes. The vegetable oil blend in Holle Stage 4 is palm, rapeseed and sunflower oil, so this box does contain palm oil. It is organic and it is declared on the label. If avoiding palm oil entirely is a priority for you, this is not the right box — it is worth comparing against other European toddler and follow-on milks in our range before you buy, and we are happy to point you at the palm-oil-free options we stock.

Can I mix Holle Stage 4 with breastfeeding?

Yes. There is no conflict between breastfeeding and offering a growing-up milk, and no reason to stop breastfeeding at twelve months if you and your child are happy to continue. Many families use a growing-up milk for one or two drinks a day alongside continued breastfeeding and a full solid diet. As always, breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor about what fits your situation.

1. Clean & Sterilize

Start by washing your hands thoroughly. Sterilize all bottles, nipples, and any utensils you’ll be using. Boil about 1 liter of fresh water, then allow it to cool for up to 30 minutes so it’s safe and ready to mix.

2. Follow Mixing Chart

Refer to the feeding table on the package to find the correct water-to-formula ratio for your toddler’s needs. Always measure using the scoop that comes in the box to ensure accuracy.

3. Mix the Bottle

Add the correct number of scoops to the cooled boiled water. Seal the bottle with a sterilized cap and shake well until the powder dissolves completely and the mixture looks smooth. Avoid handling the nipple directly to maintain hygiene.

4. Temperature Check

The prepared formula should be served warm, close to body temperature (around 98°F / 37°C). If the formula is too hot, cool it quickly under cold running water or briefly in the refrigerator. Test a few drops on the inside of your wrist before feeding. Use immediately after preparing.
