How is Multi Sanostol® used?

Multi Sanostol® is available in a 260g bottle. Children from 1 to 7 years take 8 ml of syrup daily. Children from 7 years, adolescents and adults take 10 ml. It is recommended to take it during growth and development phases, as well as at times when the child has a reduced appetite or does not eat a balanced diet, because in both cases an adequate supply of vitamins is no longer guaranteed.

What it is

Multi-Sanostol Syrup Without Added Sugar, 260 g, a German multivitamin medicine for children from 1 year

This is the sugar-free version of Multi-Sanostol, a German multivitamin syrup for children from 1 year that is licensed as a medicine in Germany rather than sold as a food supplement. It carries nine vitamins, it is taken once a day with the measuring spoon in the pack, and this is the 260 g bottle. It is sweetened with sorbitol instead of sugar.

Two things set this bottle apart, and they are worth separating. The first is regulatory: Multi-Sanostol is an authorised medicine, which is what allows it to be dosed for a one-year-old and to carry a licensed indication, the prevention of combined vitamin deficiency. The familiar Sanostol Multi-Vitamin syrup is a food supplement for ages 3 and over, and is a different thing.

The second is the sweetener. This version contains no added sugar; the sweetness comes from a sorbitol solution, at 3.5 g of sorbitol per 10 ml dose. Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol, which has two consequences the leaflet spells out: it is a source of fructose, so it matters to anyone with hereditary fructose intolerance, and in larger amounts it can loosen the bowels.

The vitamins are the same nine as the classic recipe: vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, nicotinamide and dexpanthenol, the last two being the niacin and pantothenic acid forms. Per 100 ml the syrup carries 1000 mg of vitamin C, 24,000 IU of vitamin A as retinol and 2000 IU of vitamin D.

The flavour is a natural orange one, built on orange and grapefruit juice concentrates with sweet orange peel oil, which is why children take it off a spoon. Note that going without sugar does not make it gluten-free: it still contains a malt extract made from BARLEY, so it is not suitable on a gluten-free diet.

Who it is for

Who this bottle is and is not for

The floor is 1 year, and that is why this product exists alongside the rest of the range. Most children's multivitamin syrups start at 3 years; this one is dosed and licensed from 12 months, which makes it the Sanostol to ask for when the child in question is a toddler.

Within that, this particular bottle is for a household avoiding added sugar: a child whose dentist has asked you to cut sweetened medicines, a family managing sugar intake generally, or anyone who would simply rather not give a daily spoonful of syrup sweetened with sucrose and glucose. The dose and the vitamins are the same either way.

It is not for babies under a year, and the dose does not scale down by guesswork, because the leaflet gives none below 12 months. It is also not for anyone with hereditary fructose intolerance, because sorbitol is a source of fructose. And it is not a replacement for food: a preventive vitamin covers a gap in a diet that is otherwise being worked on.

If sorbitol is the problem rather than sugar

The classic recipe of the same medicine contains no sorbitol. It is sweetened with sucrose, glucose and glucose syrup instead, and is sold here as Multi-Sanostol Syrup, 300 g. Either bottle delivers the same nine vitamins at the same dose.

How to take it

Dosage and how to give it

Read this before the first spoonful

This product contains vitamin A. The leaflet states that no risks are known within the stated dose range in pregnancy, but that vitamin A overdose and prolonged vitamin D overdose should be avoided, and that the vitamins pass into breast milk. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before starting it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not use it at all if there is a known allergy to any ingredient, if blood calcium is raised, or if urinary calcium excretion is raised. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist first if there is a history of kidney stones or of sarcoidosis, if a thiazide diuretic or a digitalis preparation is being taken, or if your child already takes another product containing vitamin A or vitamin D.

1

Use the spoon in the pack

A measuring spoon is supplied, and it is what makes the 8 ml and 10 ml marks meaningful. A kitchen teaspoon is roughly 5 ml, so measuring by eye is the easiest way to get this wrong in either direction.

2

Match the dose to the age

8 ml daily for a child from 1 year to under 7. 10 ml daily from 7 years upward, including adults. That single step is the only dosing decision this medicine asks you to make.

3

Give it once a day

One dose daily. There is no second dose and no larger dose for an adult beyond the 10 ml figure. How long to continue depends on the situation, and the leaflet directs you to use it only for as long as diet cannot meet the need.

4

Watch for a loosening effect at first

Sorbitol can upset a stomach or act mildly as a laxative, which the leaflet notes. At 3.5 g per 10 ml dose it is a modest amount, but if it unsettles your child, that is the likely reason.

5

Close it, keep it below 25 degrees

Re-close the bottle after each dose. The leaflet specifies storage below 25 degrees Celsius and use within 3 months of opening. Keep it out of the reach of children.

6

Expect the urine to turn yellow

The leaflet notes yellow urine after dosing and identifies it as the vitamin B2 in the syrup. It is harmless, but it is worth knowing before you see it.

Daily amount by age

Who Daily amount Notes
Children from 1 to under 7 years 8 ml One measuring spoon to the 8 ml mark, once a day
Children from 7 years 10 ml The same dose as an adult
Adolescents and adults 10 ml One bottle can serve a household
Babies under 1 year Not this product No dose is given below 12 months
This is a medicine, not a food supplement, and it contains sorbitol. Do not exceed the daily dose. Sorbitol is a source of fructose and is not suitable for anyone with hereditary fructose intolerance. The syrup contains vitamin A and vitamin D, so check the combined amount with a doctor or pharmacist if another product in the house contains either. Keep out of the reach of children.
Nutrition

The nine vitamins, and how much is in a dose

The leaflet states the active ingredients per 100 ml, so that is the column below that is published. The per 5 ml column is simple arithmetic on it and is marked as such; an 8 ml dose is 1.6 times the 5 ml figures and a 10 ml dose is twice them. Vitamin C is the largest single addition by weight.

Nutrient Per 100 ml, as published Per 5 ml, calculated
Vitamin A, as retinol 13.2 mg, 24,000 IU 0.66 mg, 1200 IU
Vitamin D3, colecalciferol 0.05 mg, 2000 IU 0.0025 mg, 100 IU
Vitamin C, ascorbic acid 1000 mg 50 mg
Vitamin B1, thiamine 20 mg 1 mg
Vitamin B2, riboflavin 20 mg 1 mg
Vitamin B6, pyridoxine 10 mg 0.5 mg
Vitamin E, alpha-tocopherol 20 mg 1 mg
Nicotinamide 100 mg 5 mg
Dexpanthenol 40 mg 2 mg

Only the per 100 ml figures are published for this medicine. IU is international units. No percentage of a daily reference amount is quoted, because this product is licensed as a medicine and its leaflet states active ingredient quantities rather than nutrient reference values.

What the licence covers

The authorised indication is the prevention of combined vitamin deficiency states. The leaflet sets two limits on that: it is not suitable where a deficiency is caused by impaired absorption in the gut, and where one particular vitamin is genuinely lacking, a higher-dose single-ingredient product is the appropriate thing instead.

No claim is made here for any effect beyond that licensed indication. This syrup is not presented as a treatment for colds, infections or any illness.

Before you buy

Allergen, sorbitol and what to check

No added sugar, but it still contains BARLEY

This version is sweetened with sorbitol rather than sugar, but it is still made with a malt extract from BARLEY. Barley is a gluten-bearing cereal, so the syrup is not suitable on a gluten-free diet. No gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan or vegetarian claim is made for it.

Sorbitol is the other thing to check: 3.5 g per 10 ml dose. The leaflet notes it is a source of fructose, which makes it unsuitable for anyone with hereditary fructose intolerance, and that it may cause gastrointestinal upset or act mildly as a laxative.

Two smaller figures from the leaflet are worth having. Sodium benzoate is present at 15 mg per 10 ml, and the leaflet notes it may worsen jaundice in newborns up to four weeks old, which is outside this medicine's age range but is stated on the label. Sodium is under 1 mmol, that is 23 mg, per 10 ml. The leaflet also notes that vitamin B6 at daily doses of 5 mg or more can reduce the effect of L-dopa; a 10 ml dose of this syrup contains 1 mg.

On the label

Ingredients and more

Active ingredients: retinol palmitate, colecalciferol, thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine, ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, nicotinamide, dexpanthenol.

Other ingredients: sodium benzoate, calcium gluconate, calcium phospholactate, sorbitol solution 70 percent, citric acid, xanthan gum, malt extract from BARLEY, polysorbate 80, calcium D-glucarate, sweet orange peel oil, grapefruit juice concentrate, orange juice concentrate, sunflower oil, all-rac-alpha-tocopherol, purified water.

Allergens: BARLEY, and therefore gluten. Contains sorbitol, a source of fructose.

This is the active and excipient list published for Multi-Sanostol ohne Zuckerzusatz, translated from the German. The leaflet inside the pack you receive, and the label on the bottle, are what govern.

Side effects, from the leaflet: allergic reactions are described as very rare, and the syrup should be stopped if one occurs. Seek medical advice if the recommended dose has been exceeded.

  • Nine vitamins in one syrup
  • No added sugar
  • Licensed as a medicine in Germany
  • Dosed from 1 year
  • Measuring spoon included
  • Contains BARLEY, so gluten

Read the leaflet and the label on the bottle you receive before the first dose, and keep to the dose printed on it if it differs from anything here.

How long it lasts

What a 260 g bottle holds, and how long it lasts

The bottle is sold by weight and the dose is measured by volume, so the two have to be put on the same footing before the sum works. One millilitre of this syrup is taken as one gram, so a 260 g bottle is about 260 ml. On that basis a bottle lasts about 32 days at the 8 ml daily dose for a child from 1 year to under 7, and about 26 days at the 10 ml daily dose from 7 years upward. Both figures are rounded down to whole days.

Pack Daily dose Days per pack After opening
260 g, this one 8 ml, age 1 to under 7 about 32 days Use within 3 months
260 g, this one 10 ml, age 7 and over about 26 days Use within 3 months

Those figures are worth setting against the three-month limit after opening. At 8 ml a day a bottle runs about 32 days and at 10 ml a day about 26 days, so on either dose it is finished well inside the opened life rather than going to waste.

The 3-month opened life and the storage limit of 25 degrees Celsius are the leaflet's own for this medicine. Follow the date printed on your bottle.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

How much do I give, and how often?

Once a day, with the spoon supplied. 8 ml for a child from 1 year to under 7, and 10 ml from 7 years upward, including adolescents and adults.

From what age can it be taken?

From 1 year. That is what distinguishes Multi-Sanostol within the range: it is licensed as a medicine and dosed from 12 months, where the Sanostol Multi-Vitamin food supplement starts at 3 years.

What is it sweetened with, if not sugar?

A sorbitol solution. Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol, present at 3.5 g per 10 ml dose. The leaflet notes it is a source of fructose and that it may cause stomach upset or act mildly as a laxative.

Is it suitable for someone with fructose intolerance?

No. Because sorbitol is a source of fructose, the leaflet flags this medicine as relevant to anyone with hereditary fructose intolerance. The classic sugar-sweetened version contains no sorbitol.

Is it gluten-free?

No. It contains a malt extract from BARLEY, which is a gluten-bearing cereal. Being free of added sugar does not make it free of gluten.

How long does a 260 g bottle last?

One millilitre of this syrup is taken as one gram, so a 260 g bottle is about 260 ml. That works out at about 32 days at the 8 ml dose for a child from 1 year to under 7, and about 26 days at the 10 ml dose from 7 years upward, rounding down to whole days.

How long does it keep once opened?

The leaflet specifies use within 3 months of opening, stored below 25 degrees Celsius. Follow the date printed on your bottle as well.

Why has the urine turned yellow?

The leaflet identifies yellow urine after dosing as the vitamin B2 in the syrup, and describes it as harmless.

The rest of the Sanostol range

Written from the published package leaflet data for Multi-Sanostol ohne Zuckerzusatz: the active ingredient quantities per 100 ml, the dosage by age, the excipient list, the licensed indication, the contraindications and interactions, the sorbitol and sodium benzoate figures, the side-effect note and the storage and opened-life limits. The per 5 ml column in the nutrition table is arithmetic on the published per 100 ml figures and is labelled as calculated. The 260 g pack size and the 1-year age are taken from the product itself. The days of supply on this page are worked out from the pack weight and the daily dose, taking one millilitre of this syrup as one gram on the instruction of this store: 260 g at 8 ml a day is about 32 days and at 10 ml a day about 26 days, rounded down. Sanostol itself publishes no dose count for the pack and no density for the syrup, so that one-to-one conversion is this store's and is not the manufacturer's figure. No effect is claimed beyond the licensed indication, and the previous version of this listing carried no dosage, ingredient, allergen or warning information at all. Last reviewed 20 October 2026.

  • Do not store above 77°F. Keep out of reach of children.
  • The total dose should not be exceeded without consulting a doctor or pharmacist.
