How many cans will my baby need?

Running out mid-week means a late-night store run, or switching formula on your baby. Work out how much to keep on hand.

Breast milk is best for babies. These are stock-planning estimates, not feeding advice. Every baby is different — always follow the feeding table on the can and your paediatrician's guidance on how much your baby should actually take.

Ranges assume the standard one-scoop-per-30ml preparation. Real usage shifts with growth spurts, starting solids, and how much formula ends up on the floor.

What is Aptamil Pepti 1?

Aptamil Pepti 1 is a specialised European infant formula for babies from birth whose doctor has diagnosed, or strongly suspects, cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). Its whey protein is extensively hydrolysed — broken into fragments small enough that most allergic infants no longer react to it. This listing is a single 800 g can, roughly 180 fl oz of prepared formula.

This is not a formula you choose off a shelf because your baby seems windy. It sits in a different tier from ordinary infant milk. Aptamil is made by Nutricia, Danone's clinical nutrition arm, and in the UK Pepti 1 is ACBS-approved and prescribable on FP10 — doctors write it on prescriptions for diagnosed milk allergy. If you think your baby may be reacting to milk, the first step is a diagnosis from your paediatrician or an allergy dietitian, not a new can.

The word that matters is extensively. An extensively hydrolysed formula (eHF) like Pepti 1 is a different product from a partially hydrolysed "HA" formula. HA milks are designed to reduce allergy risk in babies who do not have an allergy yet. They are not suitable for a baby who already has one. Pepti is the tier above, intended for dietary management of a confirmed allergy under medical supervision.

Where it sits in the feeding journey: Pepti 1 can be your baby's sole source of nutrition from day one to six months, and can continue alongside solid food from six to twelve months. From six months, if your care team wants to keep your baby on extensively hydrolysed nutrition, the follow-on step in the same range is Aptamil Pepti 2. Breastfeeding, where it is possible, remains the first option, and a maternal dairy-free diet is often tried before any formula change.

Nutrition

What's in Aptamil Pepti 1 per 100ml?

Prepared as directed, every 100ml of Aptamil Pepti 1 provides 276 kJ / 66 kcal, 3.4g fat, 1.6g protein and 7.1g carbohydrate. The protein is 100% extensively hydrolysed whey, the prebiotic is Aptamil's GOS/FOS blend in a 9:1 ratio, and the formula also carries DHA, ARA and nucleotides.

The ingredient deck opens with hydrolysed whey protein and maltodextrin, followed by a vegetable oil blend of palm, coconut, rapeseed, high oleic sunflower and sunflower oils, then galacto-oligosaccharides, fructo-oligosaccharides and fish oil, with the full vitamin and mineral spread an infant formula is required to carry. The declared allergens are milk and fish.

Calcium, iron and DHA are present but the exact per-100ml figures are not published in the source material we hold for this can. Check the panel on your own can for those values.

The science

What does "extensively hydrolysed" actually mean?

Hydrolysis uses enzymes to cut whole milk proteins into shorter peptide chains. In an extensively hydrolysed formula, the cutting goes much further than in a partially hydrolysed "HA" milk — far enough that the immune system of most allergic infants no longer recognises the fragments as the protein it reacts to.

That is the whole mechanism, and it is a named one rather than a vague promise of gentleness. Aptamil Pepti 1 is 100% whey-based, so there is no intact casein in the can at all, and the hydrolysis step uses a trypsin enzyme of porcine origin. The enzyme is not present in the finished powder, but it matters for families who keep halal or kosher: Aptamil Pepti 1 is not halal certified, and we have not been able to confirm kosher approval for this stage.

One honest warning before you open the can. Extensively hydrolysed formulas taste and smell noticeably stronger and more bitter than ordinary milk — savoury, sometimes described as broth-like. This is normal and expected, not a sign the powder has spoiled. Babies switched at a few weeks old usually accept it quickly; older babies often need several days of gradual mixing.

The difference is degree, and it decides who the formula is for. Long fragments can still carry the shape an allergic immune system reacts to, which is why HA milks are for risk reduction only and not for a diagnosed allergy.

Full transparency

What is not in Aptamil Pepti 1 — and what is?

Aptamil Pepti 1 is a clinical formula, not a clean-label one, and we would rather set that out plainly than let the word "gentle" do work it has not earned. It contains no intact cow's milk protein and no casein. It does contain palm oil, fish oil and maltodextrin, and it is not organic certified — EU rules do not permit an organic claim on extensively hydrolysed protein.

Comparison

How does Aptamil Pepti 1 compare to Aptamil Pepti 2 and Aptamil HA 1?

Pepti 1 and Pepti 2 are the same clinical tier at two different ages — extensively hydrolysed, for diagnosed cow's milk allergy, birth onwards and six months onwards respectively. Aptamil HA 1 looks similar on a shelf and is not the same thing at all: it is only partially hydrolysed and is meant for reducing allergy risk in babies who do not have an allergy.

Being straight with you: all three of these are 800 g cans, so a price-per-ounce comparison between them is a fair one — that is not always true across this range, and it is worth checking pack size before you compare. On the merits, Aptamil HA 1 beats Pepti 1 on two real points: it is lactose-based rather than maltodextrin-based, it tastes far closer to ordinary formula, and it carries a named probiotic strain that Pepti 1 does not. None of that makes it the right choice if your baby has a diagnosed milk allergy — for that, HA is the wrong tier and Pepti is the right one. And if your baby is already past six months, Aptamil Pepti 2 is the stage you want, not this one. Ask your dietitian which applies; this table is orientation, not a prescription.

Planning ahead

How many cans of Aptamil Pepti 1 will my baby need per month?

A commonly cited figure for an exclusively formula-fed baby on Aptamil Pepti is about nine 400 g cans a month, which works out at roughly 4 to 5 cans of this 800 g size per month. One 800 g can makes approximately 180 fl oz of prepared formula, or about 36 bottles of 5 fl oz.

Treat that as a planning range rather than a target. Babies with cow's milk allergy are often on a feeding volume set by a dietitian rather than by appetite alone, and any breastfeeding alongside the formula pulls the number down. If your care team has given you a daily volume in millilitres, work from that instead — it is specific to your baby and this range is not.

Estimates for exclusive formula feeding, converted from a published 400 g figure. Every baby feeds differently — use these for planning, not as a target.

Preparation

How do you prepare Aptamil Pepti 1?

Sterilise the bottle, boil fresh water and let it cool for no more than 30 minutes, pour the measured water into the bottle first, then add one level scoop for every 30ml of water, shake for about 25 seconds until fully dissolved, cool to body temperature and feed straight away.

1–2 hrsDiscard after feeding starts
1

Sterilise everything

Wash and sterilise the bottle, teat, ring and cap, and wash your hands before you start.

2

Boil and cool

Boil fresh drinking water and leave it to cool for no more than 30 minutes before you use it.

3

Water into the bottle first

Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.

4

Add level scoops

Add one level scoop for every 30ml of water, using only the scoop in this can and never packing or heaping it.

5

Cap and shake

Cap the bottle and shake vigorously for about 25 seconds until the powder has completely dissolved.

6

Cool, test, feed

Cool the bottle under running water, test a drop on your wrist so it feels body temperature, and feed straight away.

Never use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled more than once. Never add an extra scoop or change the dilution unless a dietitian has told you to. Make a fresh bottle for every feed, never reheat, never microwave, and discard anything left 1–2 hours after your baby starts drinking.

A note on water temperature. Aptamil specifies water that has been freshly boiled and left to cool for no more than 30 minutes, so it is still hot enough to kill bacteria in the powder. That matches NHS and WHO guidance for powdered formula — powder is not sterile, and water at that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. Let the bottle cool to body temperature before feeding, and always test a drop on the inside of your wrist first.

Please read before buying

Aptamil Pepti 1 is a specialised formula for the dietary management of diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy, and is intended to be used under medical supervision. It is not a general-purpose sensitive-tummy milk and it is not a product to switch to on your own. If you think your baby is reacting to milk, see your doctor or an allergy dietitian for a diagnosis and a feeding plan first. Contains milk and fish. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.

Store cans in a cool, dry place. Once opened, use within the period stated on the pack. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.

Taste & smell

Extensively hydrolysed formula smells and tastes stronger, more savoury and more bitter than standard milk. That is the hydrolysis, not spoilage. If your baby resists the switch, most dietitians suggest introducing it gradually over several days rather than all at once.

Questions parents ask

Aptamil Pepti 1: frequently asked questions

What age is Aptamil Pepti 1 for?

Aptamil Pepti 1 is for babies from birth. It can be used as a baby's sole source of nutrition up to six months, and can continue as part of a mixed diet from six to twelve months. From six months, the follow-on product in the same range is Aptamil Pepti 2. Which stage your baby should be on, and for how long, is a decision for your doctor or dietitian rather than the can.

What is the difference between Aptamil Pepti and Aptamil HA?

Aptamil Pepti is extensively hydrolysed and is intended for the dietary management of a diagnosed or strongly suspected cow's milk protein allergy. Aptamil HA is only partially hydrolysed and is intended to reduce the risk of allergy developing in babies who do not have one, typically where there is a family history. A baby with a confirmed allergy should not be put on an HA formula.

Can I buy Aptamil Pepti 1 without a prescription?

In the United States you can buy it as a food product, and that is what this listing is. In the United Kingdom it is ACBS-approved and doctors prescribe it on FP10. Either way, it is designed to be used under medical supervision, because a cow's milk protein allergy needs to be diagnosed, monitored and eventually re-tested by a clinician rather than managed from a shop shelf.

Is Aptamil Pepti 1 organic?

No. Aptamil Pepti 1 carries no organic certification, and it is not eligible for one — EU organic rules do not permit an organic claim on extensively hydrolysed protein. Aptamil's strength here is clinical formulation and a long record in hospital paediatric dietetics, not a certification story. If organic certification is your priority, a specialised hydrolysed formula is not where you will find it.

Why does Aptamil Pepti 1 smell and taste so strong?

Because the whey protein has been broken down extensively by enzymes, which releases bitter and savoury-tasting peptides. Every extensively hydrolysed formula shares this, regardless of brand. It is normal and it is not a sign that the powder has gone off. Younger babies usually accept it quickly; older babies often do better if the new formula is mixed in gradually over several days.

How much prepared formula does one 800 g can make?

One 800 g can makes approximately 180 fluid ounces of prepared formula, which is roughly 36 bottles of 5 fl oz. That figure is our own calculation from an assumed scoop weight of about 4.5 g rather than a manufacturer-published number, so treat it as an estimate and check the feed table printed on your own can.

Is Aptamil Pepti 1 halal or kosher?

Aptamil Pepti 1 is not halal certified. The hydrolysis process uses a trypsin enzyme of porcine origin; the enzyme is not present in the finished powder, but the product does not carry halal certification. Kosher approval is documented by the manufacturer for Aptamil Pepti 2, but we have not been able to confirm it for Pepti 1, so we do not claim it.
