The idea behind an HA formula is simple enough. Intact cow's milk protein arrives in a baby's gut as long chains. Prepared as directed, every 100ml provides 67 kcal, 3.6g fat (of which 1.5g saturates), 1.3g protein as hydrolysed whey, 7.1g carbohydrate (7.0g of it lactose), 52mg calcium, 0.60mg iron and 13.4mg DHA sourced from fish oil. The prebiotic is GOS and the live culture is Limosilactobacillus fermentum hereditum.
Those macros are deliberately ordinary. Hydrolysing the protein changes its structure, not the amount of it — at 1.3g per 100ml this is a standard Stage 1 protein level, and the energy, fat and carbohydrate figures sit exactly where a first infant milk should sit. Nothing about an HA formula asks your baby to take in less.

Who is HiPP HA Dutch Stage 1 for — and who should not use it?
It is for a healthy, formula-fed newborn in a family where a parent or sibling has an allergic condition such as eczema, asthma, hay fever or a food allergy, used to help reduce the risk that the baby develops a cow's milk protein allergy. It is not for a baby who already has a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy — that baby needs an extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed by a doctor, and this tin is not one.
The two letters on the box are the problem. HA stands for hypoallergenic, and in everyday English that sounds like "will not cause an allergy." In infant formula it means something much narrower: the protein has been broken down enough to lower the chance of sensitising an at-risk baby who does not yet have an allergy. It is a prevention product. It is not a treatment, it does not cure anything, and it still contains cow's milk protein — just in shorter pieces.
So the dividing line is a diagnosis. No diagnosis, but allergy runs in the family and your doctor has suggested a hydrolysed formula: this tin is designed for exactly that situation. A diagnosis already made, or a baby reacting to milk with vomiting, blood in the stool, hives, swelling or breathing trouble: stop, do not buy this, and speak to your doctor today. A baby with confirmed CMPA can react to partially hydrolysed protein.
And if there is no allergy history in your family at all, you do not need an HA formula. A standard first infant milk is the normal choice, and HiPP's own organic Dutch Stage 1 is the direct, EU Organic certified equivalent in the same brand. What is not in HiPP HA Dutch Stage 1?
No added sugar, no maltodextrin and no added starch — the only carbohydrate is lactose, at 7.0g of the 7.1g total. The ingredients are non-GMO and the vegetable oils are organically sourced. What is genuinely not here is an organic certificate on the finished product: EU rules do not allow one on a formula containing hydrolysed protein, so this tin is not organic and no HA formula from any brand is.

Being straight with you: HiPP HA Stage 1 German beats this tin on one clear point — it lists ARA alongside DHA, which the Dutch panel does not — and it is cheaper on the shelf. But it is a 600g tin against this 800g one, so work out the price per prepared ounce before you decide, not the price per tin. Aptamil HA 1 pairs two prebiotics, GOS and FOS, against our single GOS, and uses a different live strain — if your paediatrician named a specific strain, follow them rather than us. How do you prepare HiPP HA Dutch Stage 1?
Boil fresh water and let it cool to 40–50°C, pour the measured water into a sterilised bottle first, then add one level scoop (4.4g) per 30ml of water, shake until fully dissolved, cool to drinking temperature, about 37°C (98.6°F), and feed within one hour.

Sterilise everything
Wash and sterilise the bottle, teat, ring and cap, and wash your hands before you start.

Boil and cool
Boil fresh drinking water, then let it cool to 40–50°C (104–122°F), the temperature HiPP's own label specifies.

Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.

Add one level 4.4g scoop for every 30ml of water, levelling each scoop with the back of a clean knife — never packed or heaped.

Taste, smell and lumps
Hydrolysed formula smells and tastes stronger than standard infant milk — a little bitter, slightly savoury — and the powder is slower to dissolve. That is the shortened protein doing its job, not a fault with the tin. If your baby refuses the change, talk to your health visitor or doctor rather than switching back and forth between formulas.
