Breast milk is best for babies. These are stock-planning estimates, not feeding advice. Every baby is different — always follow the feeding table on the box and your paediatrician's guidance on how much your baby should actually take.
Ranges assume the standard one-scoop-per-30ml preparation. Real usage shifts with growth spurts, starting solids, and how much formula ends up on the floor.
What is HiPP Stage 1 Bio Combiotik?
HiPP Stage 1 Bio Combiotik is a German organic infant formula for babies from birth to 6 months, made from organic skimmed milk and organic whey, with a live probiotic culture and GOS prebiotic fibre. One box is 600 g — about 153 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 30 bottles of 5 oz.
This is HiPP's standard first infant milk: the bottle a baby can live on from day one if they are not breastfed. The German label calls it gut sättigend — well-filling — which is the line that separates it from HiPP PRE, the thinner starter tier meant mainly for topping up alongside breastfeeding.
The reason to choose the German line over the rest of the European baby formula shelf is the Combiotik system. It pairs GOS prebiotic fibre, made from the formula's own lactose, with a live probiotic culture — Lactobacillus fermentum hereditum, originally isolated from breast milk. Folate is supplied as Metafolin, the bioactive form, rather than plain folic acid.
Two things we will not dress up. HiPP Stage 1 contains organic starch, and it contains palm oil from certified sustainable sources. It is EU Organic certified under the German control code DE-ÖKO-001 — not Demeter, which belongs to Holle.

What does Combiotik mean in HiPP Stage 1 Bio Combiotik?
Combiotik is HiPP's name for putting a prebiotic and a probiotic in the same box. The prebiotic is GOS — galacto-oligosaccharide fibre made from the formula's own lactose. The probiotic is Lactobacillus fermentum hereditum, a live lactic acid culture originally found in breast milk. The fibre is the food; the culture is the organism that feeds on it.
It is the one thing on this box that the rivals do not have. Holle Stage 1 includes neither a prebiotic nor a live culture. Kendamil Organic Stage 1 includes GOS but no culture. If you are comparing organic European formula on gut support rather than on certification, this pairing is the whole argument for the German HiPP line.
A word on what this does not mean. Prebiotic fibre and live cultures are not a treatment for colic, reflux or a diagnosed allergy, and no formula should be sold as one. If your baby has a medical feeding problem, ask your paediatrician about a hydrolysed or specialist formula instead.

What is not in HiPP Stage 1 Bio Combiotik?
HiPP Stage 1's ingredient list carries no maltodextrin, no corn syrup and no soy oil — the oils are palm, rapeseed and sunflower — and no sugar is added beyond the milk's own lactose. Being straight about the rest: Stage 1 does contain organic starch and palm oil, and its DHA comes from fish oil rather than algae.

HiPP Stage 1 is the only one of the three with a live probiotic culture. Holle Stage 1 is the only one with Demeter biodynamic certification. Being straight with you: Holle Stage 1 holds the certification HiPP does not — Demeter biodynamic, a stricter standard than EU Organic — though it uses maltodextrin where HiPP uses starch. Kendamil Organic Stage 1 beats HiPP on three things parents ask about constantly: a whole-milk rather than skimmed base, no palm oil, and more DHA, from algae rather than fish. How many boxes of formula will my baby need per month?
One 600 g box of HiPP Stage 1 makes about 153 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 30 bottles of 5 oz. An exclusively formula-fed baby gets through about 5 to 6 boxes a month averaged across the first six months, starting nearer 2 boxes in the first three to four weeks and climbing as feeds get bigger.
The early weeks are cheap and the middle of the stage is not. If you are buying ahead, the months that catch parents out are three to six, when a baby is taking full bottles but has not yet started solids. If you are combination feeding, expect to use meaningfully less than this.

How do you prepare HiPP Stage 1 Bio Combiotik?
Sterilise the bottle, boil fresh water and let it cool to 40–50°C (104–122°F), pour the measured water in first, then add one level scoop of powder for every 30ml of water, shake for about 15 seconds, cool to about 37°C (98.6°F), test a drop on your wrist, and discard anything left one hour after your baby starts drinking.

Sterilise everything
Wash your hands, then sterilise the bottle, teat, cap and ring before every single feed.

Boil and cool the water
Boil fresh drinking water, then let it cool to 40–50°C (104–122°F), the temperature HiPP's own label specifies.

Water into the bottle first
Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.

Add level scoops
Add one level scoop of powder for every 30ml of water, using the scoop supplied and levelling it against the edge of the box. Never heap a scoop.

Cap and shake
Close the bottle and shake for about 15 seconds, until no powder is left clinging to the sides.

Cool, test, feed
Cool to about 37°C (98.6°F), test a drop on the inside of your wrist, and discard anything left one hour after your baby starts drinking.
Never use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled more than once. Prepare a fresh bottle for every feed, never reheat, never microwave, and discard anything left one hour after your baby starts drinking.

Please read before buying
HiPP Stage 1 contains cow's milk protein, lactose and fish oil. It is not suitable for babies with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy or a fish allergy, and it is not a hypoallergenic formula. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.
Store boxes in a cool, dry place. Once opened, use within about three weeks. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.
Stage 1 or PRE?
Both are suitable from birth. HiPP labels Stage 1 gut sättigend — well-filling — and HiPP PRE ideal zum Zufüttern, ideal for topping up. PRE is lactose-only and starch-free, so it is the lighter of the two and the one most parents choose when they are combination feeding.

Is HiPP Stage 1 suitable from birth?
Yes. HiPP Stage 1 is a first infant milk for babies from birth to six months, and it can be used as a baby's sole source of nutrition from day one if they are not breastfed. What water temperature does HiPP Stage 1 need?
The box specifies water cooled to about 40–50°C (104–122°F) before the powder goes in, and the made-up bottle cooled to roughly 37°C (98.6°F), body temperature, before feeding. That mixing temperature is lower than the 70°C (158°F) the WHO and NHS advise for powdered formula generally, because hotter water damages the live Lactobacillus fermentum culture and heat-sensitive vitamins. US guidance from the FDA and CDC reserves the 70°C method for babies under 2 months, born prematurely, or with a weakened immune system. If your baby is in one of those groups, ask your pediatrician which to follow.
Does HiPP Stage 1 contain starch?
Yes. Organic starch is on the ingredient list for German HiPP Stage 1, confirmed on HiPP's own panel and on independent retailer listings. It is what makes Stage 1 more filling than HiPP PRE, which is lactose-only. If you want a starch-free formula from birth, HiPP PRE is the one to buy and we stock it.
What does Combiotik mean?

Is HiPP Stage 1 Demeter certified?
No. HiPP Stage 1 is EU Organic certified and carries the German organic control code DE-ÖKO-001, which is a genuine, verifiable certification body reference. It is not Demeter certified. Demeter is a biodynamic standard stricter than EU Organic, and among the brands we stock it belongs to parts of the Holle range rather than to HiPP.
What is Metafolin, and why does HiPP use it?
Metafolin is a bioactive form of folate — the body can use it directly, without first having to convert it, which is not true of ordinary folic acid. HiPP uses it across the German Combiotik line. It is a small formulation detail rather than a headline feature, but it is a genuine difference from most formulas on the shelf.
How many boxes of HiPP Stage 1 will I need each month?
About 5 to 6 boxes a month for an exclusively formula-fed baby, averaged across the whole birth-to-six-month stage. It starts far lower — around 2 boxes in the first three to four weeks — and rises steadily as feeds grow. One 600 g box makes roughly 153 fl oz, about 30 bottles of 5 oz.
When do we move from Stage 1 to Stage 2?
HiPP Stage 2 is labelled for use after the sixth month, usually around the time solid food is introduced. There is no obligation to switch on your baby's six-month birthday — Stage 1 remains nutritionally suitable throughout the first year if your baby is doing well on it. Most parents move across once solids are established.
