How many boxes will my baby need?

Running out mid-week means a late-night store run, or switching formula on your baby. Work out how much to keep on hand.

Breast milk is best for babies. These are stock-planning estimates, not feeding advice. Every baby is different — always follow the feeding table on the box and your paediatrician's guidance on how much your baby should actually take.

Ranges assume the standard one-scoop-per-30ml preparation. Real usage shifts with growth spurts, starting solids, and how much formula ends up on the floor.

German 400 g Box · Growing-Up Milk

What is Holle Goat 4 organic growing-up milk?

Holle Goat 4 is a European organic goat milk growing-up formula for toddlers, labelled 12 months to 3 years and built on whole goat milk powder at 39.8% — the highest goat-milk content of any stage in the line. This listing is a single 400 g box, about 91 scoops and roughly 101 fl oz of prepared milk.

This is a toddler growing-up milk, not an infant formula. By 12 months your child is eating a varied solid diet, and this box is the milk part of that diet rather than a meal replacement. It works on its own in a bottle or beaker, and Holle also intends it to be stirred into cereal or porridge, which is how a lot of families actually use it.

The reason to keep a toddler on a goat milk formula rather than moving to plain cow's milk comes down to two things. Goat milk is naturally rich in A2 beta-casein instead of the A1 type common in standard cow milk, which forms a softer, smaller curd during digestion. And a fortified growing-up milk carries iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium and DHA at levels ordinary milk does not, which matters on the days a toddler barely touches a meal.

Holle is one of very few brands that makes a goat formula at this stage at all. HiPP's goat line stops at Stage 2 and Kendamil's at Stage 3, so if your family is staying off cow's milk past twelve months, the choice narrows fast. This box carries EU Organic certification. Holle Stage 4 formulas do not carry Demeter certification — see the questions below.

In the feeding journey this is the last step. Before it is Holle Goat 3 for 10+ months, which is Demeter certified. After it, most children move to ordinary family milk and food, on a timetable your paediatrician can help you set. The same stage is also sold as an 800 g Dutch tin — see the comparison below before you choose between them on price.

What's in Holle Goat 4 growing-up milk?

Whole goat milk powder leads the ingredient list at 39.8%, followed by maltodextrin, organic sunflower and rapeseed oils, starch and lactose. DHA comes from algal oil rather than fish oil, and the box adds the amino acids L-cystine, L-tryptophan and L-tyrosine alongside calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, vitamins C and E, niacin and pantothenic acid.

Ingredient What it is doing in the box
Whole goat milk powder · 39.8% The base, and the highest goat-milk concentration of any stage in this line. Naturally A2 beta-casein.
Maltodextrin A gentle carbohydrate, standard in growing-up milks at toddler age.
Vegetable oils Sunflower and rapeseed. No palm oil and no fish oil in this box.
Starch Gives the prepared drink a little more body for an older child.
Lactose The milk sugar, carried through from the earlier stages.
Algal DHA oil Long-chain omega-3 from algae, so the DHA is plant sourced rather than fish sourced.
L-cystine, L-tryptophan, L-tyrosine Amino acids added to round out the protein profile at this stage.
Calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc The minerals a fortified growing-up milk adds that plain milk does not carry.
Vitamins C and E, niacin, pantothenic acid Part of the vitamin spread required of a European growing-up milk.

Two details are worth pulling out of that list. The first is the 39.8% whole goat milk powder, which is more milk by proportion than any earlier stage in the range — Stage 3 sits at 38.5%. The second is the amino-acid fortification: L-cystine, L-tryptophan and L-tyrosine are added here in a way that is not published for Holle's Dutch goat Stage 4 tin, which is a genuine, if narrow, point of difference between the two packs.

The full per-100 ml nutrition panel is printed on the box. We would rather send you to the label than reprint figures we cannot check against the pack in your hands. Allergen: contains milk (goat).

Digestion

Why give a toddler goat milk formula instead of cow's milk?

Two reasons. Goat milk is predominantly A2 beta-casein, the protein type that forms a softer, smaller curd in the stomach than the A1 and A2 mix in standard cow's milk. And a fortified growing-up milk carries iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium and DHA at levels plain milk does not.

The protein difference sits at a single position in the chain. Where A1 beta-casein carries histidine at position 67, A2 carries proline. That one residue changes how the chain is broken apart during digestion, and with it how firmly the curd sets. It is a structural fact about the milk, not a marketing claim.

The fortification argument is the more practical one at this age. Toddlers eat unpredictably, and iron in particular is easy to fall short on once infant formula or breast milk stops. A stage-appropriate milk drink covers part of that gap on the days meals do not go to plan — which is also why Holle intends this powder to be stirred into porridge as well as served in a cup.

What goat milk formula is not: a treatment for cow's milk protein allergy. Goat and cow milk proteins cross-react in most allergic children, so a diagnosed allergy needs a hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed by your doctor. Goat milk is a reasonable gentler option for an unsettled toddler with no diagnosis. If you suspect an allergy, see a doctor rather than switching species.

A2 beta-casein · goat milk
proline 67
A1 beta-casein · conventional cow milk
histidine 67

Position 67 is the single amino-acid difference between the two protein variants. It changes how the chain breaks down during digestion, and with it how the curd sets.

Comparison

How does Holle Goat 4 compare to Holle Goat 3 and the Dutch Goat Stage 4 tin?

All three are organic goat milk formulas with algae DHA and no palm oil. Holle Goat 3 is the one with Demeter biodynamic certification; Holle Goat 4 has the most goat milk by proportion and added amino acids; the Dutch Goat Stage 4 is the same toddler stage in an 800 g tin rather than a 400 g box.

Being straight with you: if Demeter biodynamic certification is the reason you buy Holle, this is not the pack that carries it. Holle Goat 3 is Demeter certified, it is suitable from 10 months, and plenty of families simply stay on it through the second year rather than stepping up. Holle Stage 4 formulas do not carry Demeter certification. This stage is organic certified only; Demeter applies to Holle's earlier stages. And watch the pack size when you compare prices: Holle Goat Stage 4 Dutch is the same toddler stage in an 800 g tin holding twice the powder — roughly 200 fl oz prepared against about 101 fl oz here. A typical toddler gets through about 3 of these 400 g boxes a month, or under 2 of the Dutch tins, so compare cost per prepared ounce rather than per pack. This box's own advantages are the highest goat-milk proportion in the range at 39.8% and the added amino acids.

Planning ahead

How many boxes of Holle Goat 4 will my toddler need per month?

Around 3 boxes a month for a typical toddler, with a usual range of about 2.5 to 3.5 boxes depending on how many milk drinks a day your child has and how big they are. One 400 g box holds roughly 91 scoops and makes about 101 fl oz of prepared milk.

The box is small, so the monthly count is higher than it would be for an 800 g tin of the same stage — roughly double. That is worth knowing before you compare this pack with the Dutch Goat Stage 4 tin on sticker price alone.

Planning estimates, not a feeding target. Follow the feeding table printed on the box, and treat this milk as a complement to a varied solid-food diet rather than a meal replacement. Every child drinks differently.

Preparation

How do you prepare Holle Goat 4 growing-up milk?

Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to about 40–50 °C, add half the water your feed needs to a sterilised bottle, level off the number of scoops the toddler feeding table on this box calls for, shake thoroughly, add the remaining water, shake again, then cool to about 37 °C and serve straight away.

Every feedFresh bottle, no leftovers
1

Sterilise everything

Wash your hands, then sterilise the bottle or beaker, teat, ring and cap before every use.

2

Boil, then cool to 40–50 °C

Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to about 40–50 °C (104–122 °F) before you use it.

3

Half the water in first

Add about half the water your feed needs to the bottle before any powder goes in.

4

Add level scoops

Use only the measuring spoon supplied in this box, at the toddler ratio printed on the pack, and level each scoop off.

5

Shake, top up, shake again

Close the bottle and shake thoroughly, add the remaining water, then shake thoroughly again.

6

Cool, test, serve

Cool to a drinking temperature of about 37 °C (98.6 °F), check it, and serve straight away.

Use the ratio printed on this box — the toddler ratio differs from the earlier stages, so do not carry a scoop or a ratio over from another pack. Do not change the powder-to-water proportions without explicit medical advice. Always prepare fresh, never re-use leftovers, never reheat, and never heat baby food in a microwave because of the risk of overheating.

A note on water temperature. Holle specifies water at 40–50 °C for this formula, and that is the instruction printed on your box. It is set deliberately — hotter water damages the heat-sensitive vitamins this formula is built around.

Many health authorities, including the NHS and WHO, advise 70 °C or hotter for any powdered formula, because powder is not sterile and that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. The difference matters most for newborns, premature babies, and babies with weakened immunity. If your baby is in one of those groups, ask your paediatrician or health visitor which to follow for your situation.

Please read before buying

Goat milk formula is not a treatment for cow's milk protein allergy. Goat and cow milk proteins are closely related and cross-react in most children with a diagnosed allergy, so this box is not a substitute for a prescribed hydrolysed or amino-acid formula — speak to your doctor. It is a reasonable gentler option for an unsettled toddler with no diagnosis. This is a growing-up milk for children over 12 months, not an infant formula, and it is a complement to solid food rather than a meal replacement. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.

Store boxes in a cool, dry place and keep the inner bag closed. Never reheat or microwave prepared milk. The drinking amounts printed on the box are general guidelines — your child does not have to finish a bottle, and individual variation is normal.

Packaging & boxes

Holle has been moving this range between old and new box designs, so the artwork on the pack you receive may not match the photograph exactly. The formula inside is the same. If an inner seal is ever broken, or the powder looks or smells wrong, do not use it — message us and we will replace it.

Questions parents ask

Holle Goat 4: frequently asked questions

What age is Holle Goat 4 for?

Holle Goat 4 is labelled for children 12 months to 3 years. It is a growing-up milk rather than an infant formula, which means it is the milk part of a varied solid-food diet and not a sole source of nutrition. It can be served on its own in a bottle or beaker, or mixed into cereal and porridge. Holle Goat 3 covers 10+ months before it, and there is no further stage after this one.

Can I use goat milk formula if my child has a cow's milk allergy?

No. Goat milk formula is not a treatment for cow's milk protein allergy, and it should not be chosen for that reason. Goat and cow milk proteins are structurally close enough that most children with a confirmed allergy react to both, which is why goat milk is not classed as hypoallergenic. A diagnosed allergy needs a hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed by a doctor. Goat milk is a reasonable gentler option for an unsettled toddler who has no diagnosis.

Is Holle Goat 4 Demeter certified?

No. Holle Stage 4 formulas do not carry Demeter certification. This box is EU Organic certified, and that is the certification we claim for it. Demeter is granted per product rather than per brand, and it applies to Holle's earlier goat stages rather than this one. If biodynamic certification is your reason for choosing Holle, Holle Goat 3 is the Demeter certified pack and it is suitable from 10 months — many families simply stay on it through the second year.

Why give a toddler goat milk formula instead of plain cow's milk?

Two reasons. Goat milk is naturally rich in A2 beta-casein rather than the A1 type in standard cow milk, and A2 protein forms a softer, smaller curd during digestion. And a fortified growing-up milk carries iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, vitamins C and E and DHA at levels plain milk does not, which matters for toddlers who eat unpredictably. Whether your child needs a fortified milk at all is a good question for your paediatrician.

How much prepared milk does one 400 g box make?

One 400 g box of Holle Goat 4 holds roughly 91 scoops and makes about 101 fluid ounces of prepared milk. A typical toddler gets through around 3 boxes a month, with a usual range of about 2.5 to 3.5 depending on how many milk drinks a day they have. Actual yield depends on how accurately each scoop is levelled off and on the ratio printed on your box.

What is the difference between Holle Goat 4 and the Dutch Goat Stage 4 tin?

They are separate products covering the same toddler stage. This German pack is a 400 g box built on whole goat milk powder at 39.8% with added amino acids. The Dutch version is an 800 g tin built on full-cream goat milk, holding roughly twice the powder at about 200 fl oz prepared against 101 fl oz here. Both are EU Organic, both are palm-oil-free and both use algae DHA. Compare them on cost per prepared ounce, not per pack.

Are there other goat milk formulas for this age?

Not many. Holle is one of very few brands that makes a goat formula at the toddler stage at all — HiPP's goat line stops at Stage 2 and Kendamil's at Stage 3. Jovie Goat 3 is one of the few alternatives, labelled 1+ year, with a lactose-only carbohydrate and halal and kosher certification, though it uses fish-oil DHA rather than algae. If you are staying off cow's milk past twelve months, the shortlist is genuinely short.
