What it is

HiPP Organic Good-Night Whole Grain Millet and Rice with Apple, 250 g, from 4 months

This is HiPP's Good-Night organic milk cereal for babies from 4 months, built on whole grain millet and rice with 16 percent apple puree. The milk powder is already in the box, so you make it up with water alone. It is gluten free, it carries no added sugar, and it comes as flakes in a 250 g box.

Good-Night is HiPP's name for the evening bowl, and the recipe is built for that slot. It is a milk cereal rather than a plain grain porridge, so a prepared bowl is a complete course instead of a thickened milk feed, and it is substantial enough to be the last thing a baby eats before bed.

The grain side is 22 percent rice flour and 10 percent whole grain millet flour. Both are gluten-free grains, which is why HiPP marks this box gluten free, and the millet is used wholegrain rather than refined. Apple puree at 16 percent carries the flavor, with a small amount of apple extract alongside it.

The dairy is partially demineralized whey, which is the first entry on the panel, with 15 percent skimmed milk powder. Partially demineralizing the whey takes out part of its mineral load, which is the standard way a baby cereal uses whey without the salts that come with it.

The added micronutrients are what make this worth being the evening meal. HiPP states that the calcium and vitamin D in it are necessary to maintain normal bone health, that the iron supports normal cognitive function and the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin, that the iodine helps maintain normal thyroid function, and that the vitamin A supports the normal functioning of the immune system. It is high in vitamin C, which improves iron absorption, and high in vitamin B1.

Where it fits

Where this one sits in the weaning day

The evening, which is what the name says and what the recipe is for. A milk cereal made up with water is quick at the end of the day, it does not need a bottle made alongside it, and the portion grows with your baby rather than the product changing.

It is not a first cereal. One box brings rice, millet, cow's milk protein, whey and apple at the same time. The usual order is a single grain first, then milk, then fruit, a few days apart, so that a reaction tells you something. Once those have each been met on their own, this box is a sensible next step and the age on it is 4 months.

The three portion sizes are the reason a box lasts across a stage rather than a week. HiPP publishes 40 g of flakes from 4 months, 45 g from the 6th month and 50 g from the 8th, each with its own water measure, and the prepared bowl grows from 170 g to 205 g across those three.

If this would be your baby's first cereal

Begin with something that has one ingredient in it. HiPP's Organic 100% Rice Grain Porridge, 200 g is rice flour and vitamin B1 and nothing else, also from 4 months, and it introduces the rice in this box on its own first. Come back to a Good-Night cereal once grain, milk and fruit have each been met.

Preparation

How to prepare HiPP Good-Night Millet and Rice with Apple

This porridge is prepared with water only

Do not make it up with milk or with formula. The milk powder is already in the flakes and the quantities HiPP publishes assume water, so adding milk changes the recipe. Boil the water and let it cool to 50 degrees Celsius before it meets the powder, check the temperature yourself before your baby does, make every bowl fresh, and spoon-feed it.

50 °CCool the water to this
40 gFlakes, from 4 months
130 mlWater, from 4 months
1 minTime to swell
1

Boil the water

Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to 50 degrees Celsius. This is the only liquid the recipe calls for.

2

Measure the flakes for your baby's age

40 g, about 3 to 4 tablespoons, from 4 months. 45 g, about 4 tablespoons, from the 6th month. 50 g, 4 to 5 tablespoons, from the 8th. The flakes go into the bowl first.

3

Pour the matching amount of water

130 ml, 140 ml or 155 ml to go with the flake quantity above. The water goes onto the powder rather than the powder into the water.

4

Mix it through

Stir until no dry pockets are left. HiPP notes that every baby eats a different amount, so the three quantities are recommendations rather than a fixed rule.

5

Leave it a minute to swell

One minute is enough. Longer gives a thicker bowl, which can suit an older baby who is working at the spoon.

6

Check the temperature, then spoon-feed

Check it yourself before the bowl reaches your baby, and feed it straight away rather than keeping a made-up bowl back for later.

HiPP's recommended amounts by age

From Flakes Water Prepared portion
4 months 40 g (about 3-4 tbsp) 130 ml 170 g
The 6th month 45 g (about 4 tbsp) 140 ml 185 g
The 8th month 50 g (4-5 tbsp) 155 ml 205 g

Quantities are HiPP's own for this box. Tablespoon measures are a guide to the gram weights beside them rather than a substitute for them. Each baby eats a different amount, so treat the three rows as starting points.

Do not use a microwave. Check the box and inner bag are intact before first use, close the pack after every use, keep it dry at room temperature, and use the contents within 3 to 4 weeks of opening.
What the nutrients do

The added nutrients, and what HiPP's label says about them

A milk cereal carries added micronutrients that a plain grain porridge does not. These are the ones this box's own label makes a statement about, with the statement as the label gives it.

Nutrient What the label states
Calcium and vitamin D Necessary to maintain normal bone health. The calcium is added in line with legislation
Iron Helps support normal cognitive function and the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin
Iodine Helps maintain normal thyroid function
Vitamin A Helps support the normal functioning of the immune system. Added in line with regulations
Vitamin C High in vitamin C, which improves iron absorption
Vitamin B1 High in vitamin B1, added in line with regulations

Vitamin E is in the panel as DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate and is listed without a function statement, because this box's label does not make one for it. No nutrition table with amounts and percentages is published for this box on this listing, so none is reproduced here; the declaration printed on your box carries the figures.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in it

Contains milk, and HiPP marks it gluten free

This box contains cow's milk in two forms: partially demineralized whey and skimmed milk powder at 15 percent. The grains are rice and millet, neither of which is a gluten cereal, and HiPP marks the box gluten free. Read the allergen panel printed on your own box before preparing a feed.

Allergens: MILK, as partially demineralized whey and skimmed milk powder.

Reproduced from the ingredient declaration this listing publishes for this box. The panel printed on the box you receive is the one that governs.

No added sugar: HiPP states no added sugars and that the box contains natural sugars. Nothing in the list is a sugar, a syrup or a juice concentrate, and the sugars in a prepared bowl come from the lactose in the milk fractions and from the apple.

The last seven entries are the added vitamins and minerals under their chemical names: L-ascorbic acid is vitamin C, iron diphosphate is the iron, DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate is vitamin E, thiamine mononitrate is vitamin B1, retinyl acetate is vitamin A, potassium iodate is the iodine and cholecalciferol is vitamin D.

Read as a list, that is two gluten-free grains, two milk fractions, apple in two forms, two vegetable oils and the added vitamins and minerals. Nothing is added to color, flavor or preserve it.

  • 22% rice, 10% wholegrain millet
  • 16% apple puree
  • Gluten free, as HiPP marks it
  • Milk powder already in the box
  • No added sugar
  • With calcium and vitamin D
  • With iron and iodine

Portions

How many bowls a 250 g box makes

Because HiPP publishes a different flake quantity for each age, the bowl count falls as your baby grows. Each figure is one division of the 250 g pack.

Age Flakes per bowl Arithmetic Bowls per box
From 4 months 40 g 250 ÷ 40 about 6
From the 6th month 45 g 250 ÷ 45 about 5
From the 8th month 50 g 250 ÷ 50 5

So a 250 g box is about six evening bowls for a four-month-old and five for an eight-month-old. The prepared portion is 170 g, 185 g or 205 g, which is the weight of the bowl rather than of the powder.

All three figures are calculated from HiPP's own gram weights and the 250 g pack size, and the arithmetic is shown so you can check it. A level tablespoon varies between hands, so treat the bowl count as a planning figure rather than a promise.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

How do I prepare this Good-Night cereal?

With water only. Boil fresh water and cool it to 50 degrees Celsius. Put the flakes in the bowl first: 40 g from 4 months, 45 g from the 6th month, 50 g from the 8th. Pour on 130 ml, 140 ml or 155 ml of water to match, mix, and leave it about a minute to swell. Check the temperature and spoon-feed it. Do not use a microwave.

Do I add formula or milk to it?

No. The whey and skimmed milk powder are already in the flakes, so water is the only liquid it needs and the quantities HiPP publishes assume water.

From what age can my baby have it?

From 4 months, which is the age on this product. It brings several new foods at once, so it is better once a single grain, milk and fruit have each been introduced on their own.

Is it gluten free?

HiPP marks this box gluten free. The grains are rice flour and wholegrain millet flour, neither of which is a gluten cereal. Read the allergen panel on your own box before preparing a feed.

Does it contain milk?

Yes. Partially demineralized whey is the first ingredient and skimmed milk powder is 15 percent of the box. It is not suitable for a milk-free diet.

Does it contain added sugar?

No sugar is added. HiPP states no added sugars and that the box contains natural sugars, which come from the lactose in the milk fractions and from the apple puree.

Why is it called Good-Night?

It is the name HiPP gives its evening cereals. Because the milk is in the box, a prepared bowl is a complete course rather than a thickened milk feed, which is what makes it suited to the last meal of the day. The box is not a sleep aid and nothing of that kind is claimed for it.

How many portions does a 250 g box make?

About six at the 4-month quantity of 40 g, about five at 45 g and five at 50 g. The arithmetic is in the portions table on this page.
