What is HiPP Organic Good-Night Baby Biscuit Milk & Cereal?

This is an organic milk and cereal porridge for babies from the 6th month, made with wholemeal wheat flour and wheat semolina, skimmed milk powder and real baby biscuit. The milk is already in the box, so it is prepared with water only — no milk is added. One 250 g box makes roughly 5 to 6 evening portions.

It belongs to HiPP's Good-Night range, the warm spoon-fed meal many parents give in place of a late bottle once solids are established. The flavour is deliberately plain and gently sweet: cereal, milk and a vanilla-scented biscuit, with no added sugars — the sweetness that is there comes from the milk's own lactose and from the biscuit.

The grain is the point of it. Wheat semolina gives a smooth, slightly thickened spoonful that sits differently from a bottle, and the wholemeal wheat flour alongside it keeps the whole grain in the meal rather than only the starch. A baby biscuit at 10% carries the flavour. It is a European baby food made in Germany to the EU organic standard.

Being straight about the ingredient list: this porridge contains palm oil, from certified sustainable organic cultivation, alongside rapeseed and sunflower oil. It contains gluten, milk and wheat, and it is made on a line that may carry traces of egg and nuts. It is not a first taste for a baby who has never had grain, and it is not suitable for a baby avoiding wheat or dairy.

Where it fits

Who is this porridge for, and where does it fit in weaning?

It is for a baby who is already eating solids and has already met grain — usually somewhere from the 6th month onward — and it is designed to be the evening meal, replacing a milk feed rather than sitting alongside one. It is spoon-fed, never bottle-fed.

The usual weaning order puts a single, plain grain first: rice, millet or oats mixed with your baby's own milk. A milk and cereal porridge like this one comes after that, because it brings cereal, dairy and a biscuit together in one meal and is more filling than a plain cereal. Most families reach for it when the late-afternoon or bedtime feed stops holding a baby through the evening.

Portion sizes grow with your baby rather than staying fixed. HiPP's own dosage guidance moves from 45 g of powder from the 6th month up to 50 g from the 8th month, with a smaller 40 g portion for a baby just starting on it or eating lightly. Start at the smaller end and let appetite decide the rest.

If your baby has not had grain yet

Start with a plain single-grain cereal mixed into your baby's usual milk before moving to a milk porridge. Holle Organic Rice Porridge and HiPP 100% Rice Porridge are both single-grain and contain no gluten-bearing cereal; Holle Organic Wholegrain Semolina is the plain wheat step before this one.

How do you prepare HiPP Good-Night Baby Biscuit Milk & Cereal?

Water only — never milk

The milk powder is already in this box. The front of the pack says JUST ADD WATER, and that is the whole instruction: boil fresh drinking water, cool it to about 50°C (122°F), and stir it into the powder. Making it up with breast milk, infant formula or cow's milk instead of water doubles the milk in the meal and makes the porridge too concentrated for a baby. If you want a porridge you mix with your baby's own milk, you want a plain cereal, not a milk porridge.

Water onlyMilk is already in the box
45 g : 140 mlFrom the 6th month
Fresh each mealNever reheat, never microwave
1

Boil fresh water

Boil fresh drinking water for every porridge meal, and let it cool to about 50°C (122°F). Water that is too hot makes the powder clump rather than dissolve.

2

Powder into the bowl first

Measure the powder for your baby's age into a bowl or deep plate, using the table below. Powder goes in before the water.

3

Add the water and stir

Pour the measured cooled water over the powder and stir until it is smooth and no dry pockets are left.

4

Let it swell

Leave the porridge to stand for about a minute, until it thickens to the consistency your baby takes easily. Stir again if it stiffens.

5

Check the temperature

Check it is lukewarm before it reaches your baby — a drop on the inside of your wrist should feel barely warm, not hot.

6

Spoon-feed it

Always feed this porridge from a spoon. Never put it in a bottle, and never feed it through a teat.

Portion Powder Water at ~50°C Prepared portion
Smaller portion 40 g (3–4 tbsp) 130 ml 170 g
From the 6th month 45 g (4 tbsp) 140 ml 185 g
From the 8th month 50 g (4–5 tbsp) 155 ml 205 g
Prepare a fresh portion for every meal and throw away anything your baby does not finish — saliva on the spoon thins the porridge and it should not be kept. Do not heat this porridge in a microwave, which creates hot spots that can scald. Never reheat a made-up portion. Store the box in a cool, dry place and close the inner bag after each use.
Milk porridge or plain cereal?

What is the difference between a milk porridge and a plain baby cereal?

A milk porridge already contains milk powder and is made up with water. A plain cereal contains no milk at all and is made up with your baby's own breast milk, infant formula or, later, fresh milk. Mixing the two up is the single most common preparation mistake, and it matters: a milk porridge made with milk is over-concentrated.

Every porridge in our range states which kind it is at the top of its own page. When in doubt, read the ingredient list: if you see milk powder or whey, it is a milk porridge and takes water.

  • No added salt
  • No preservatives
  • No artificial flavours

The vitamins and minerals in the list are not decoration. Iron matters from the second half of the first year, when a baby's own stores are running down and milk alone no longer covers it. Calcium and vitamin D work together on bone development, vitamin B1 supports the nervous system and the way the body uses carbohydrate, and iodine, here as potassium iodate, supports normal thyroid function. The whole grain in the wholemeal wheat flour brings the fibre and the nutrients that live in the outer layers of the grain, which a refined flour leaves behind.

Portions

How many portions does one box make?

One 250 g box makes about 5 to 6 portions. At the 6-month measure of 45 g of powder per portion that is 250 ÷ 45, or roughly 5 and a half portions; at the 8-month measure of 50 g it is exactly 5; at the smaller 40 g measure it is about 6.

Because this is an evening meal rather than an all-day food, a box is normally about five to six days for a baby eating one portion a day. Each prepared portion weighs 170 g, 185 g or 205 g depending on which measure you use, since the water is part of the finished weight.

Measure Powder per portion Portions per 250 g box Prepared portion
Smaller portion 40 g ~6 170 g
From the 6th month 45 g ~5.5 185 g
From the 8th month 50 g 5 205 g

Portions per box are the 250 g net weight divided by the powder in one portion, rounded. Every baby eats differently — use these for planning, not as a target.

Questions parents ask

HiPP Good-Night Baby Biscuit Milk & Cereal: frequently asked questions

Do I make this porridge with milk or with water?

Water. The skimmed milk powder is already in the box, which is why the pack says to just add water. Boil fresh drinking water, let it cool to about 50°C (122°F), and stir it into the measured powder. Using breast milk, formula or cow's milk instead would make the meal too concentrated for a baby.

What age is this porridge for?

From the 6th month. The front of the box carries HiPP's "from the 6th month" marking, and the dosage guidance starts at 45 g of powder at that age and moves to 50 g from the 8th month. It is intended for a baby who is already established on solids, not as a first food.

Does it contain gluten?

Yes. Wholemeal wheat flour, wheat semolina and the wheat flour in the biscuit all contain gluten, so this is not suitable for a baby avoiding gluten or wheat. It also contains milk, and may contain traces of egg and nuts.

Is there any added sugar?

No sugar is added. The pack is marked "no added sugars", and no sugar appears in the ingredient list. The porridge still tastes mildly sweet, because milk carries its own lactose and the biscuit and bourbon vanilla add flavour.

Can I give this instead of a bedtime bottle?

That is what the Good-Night range is designed for — a spoon-fed evening meal in place of a late milk feed, once your baby is eating solids. It should always be fed from a spoon and never from a bottle. If you are not sure whether your baby is ready to drop a feed, ask your paediatrician.

How many portions are in a box?

About 5 to 6. The box is 250 g, and one portion uses 40 g, 45 g or 50 g of powder depending on your baby's age, so a box covers roughly five to six evening meals.

Can I prepare it in advance or reheat it?

No. Make a fresh portion for each meal and discard whatever is left, because contact with the spoon thins the porridge. Do not reheat it, and do not use a microwave — microwaves create hot spots that can scald a baby's mouth.

Does it contain palm oil?

Yes. The vegetable oil blend is palm, rapeseed and sunflower oil, and the palm oil is organic and from sustainable cultivation certified by independent inspection bodies. If you prefer to avoid palm oil entirely, a plain single-grain cereal is the simpler choice.
