HiPP Organic Baby Bircher Muesli, 250 g, from the 6th month
HiPP Organic Baby Bircher Muesli is an organic baby cereal for babies from the 6th month. It is a dry baby muesli built on apple and banana puree with wholegrain flour and oat flakes, and it arrives as a powder in a resealable 250 g foil pouch. You mix each bowl fresh, with infant formula, with whole milk, or as HiPP's own dairy-free cereal-fruit porridge.
A Bircher muesli is a soaked fruit-and-grain breakfast, and this is that idea milled fine enough for a baby to take from a spoon. Fruit is the largest part of the dry mix: apple puree at 34 percent and banana puree at 25 percent together make up 59 percent of what is in the pouch, which is where the fruit flavour comes from. HiPP's own description calls it an ideal start to the day, and that is the slot it is built for: a baby breakfast cereal rather than an evening porridge.
The grain side is wholegrain flour at 29 percent, made up of WHEAT, RYE and BARLEY, plus wholegrain oat flakes at 12 percent. That is four cereals, all of them wholegrain, and all four carry gluten. It matters for the order you introduce things in: a cereal holding wheat, rye, barley and oats at once is not the pack to meet a new grain on. This is a cereal for a baby who has already had those grains singly and taken them well.
Each pouch also carries added vitamin B1, the thiamine that European rules require in a baby cereal. Beyond the fruit, the grain and that one vitamin the list is short, and HiPP states the pack is free from added colourings, flavours and preservatives, with every ingredient from controlled organic cultivation.
What makes it worth keeping in the cupboard is that one pouch covers three different breakfasts. Prepared with 200 ml of made-up infant milk it becomes a formula porridge; with 150 ml of whole milk and a teaspoon of rapeseed oil it becomes a milk porridge; with 100 ml of water, half a glass of fruit puree and a teaspoon of oil it becomes the dairy-free version. The same powder, three routes, and you pick the one that fits where your baby is. As a European baby cereal it is a flexible pouch rather than a single fixed recipe.

Where it fits
Where this one sits in the weaning day
HiPP positions this as the morning bowl, and the recipe backs that up. Fruit leads, the grains are wholegrain rather than refined, and the preparation is quick enough to do while a baby is already awake and asking. If you are building a routine, this is the breakfast end of the day rather than the bedtime end.
It is not, however, a starting cereal. Four gluten-bearing grains and two fruits in one pouch means four new cereals and two new fruits arriving together, which is the opposite of how grains are usually introduced. The usual order is one grain at a time, a few days apart, so that if something disagrees you know which one it was. Once wheat, rye, barley and oats have each been met on their own, a mixed muesli like this one becomes the easy next step rather than a risk.
From the 6th month it also works as the first bowl your baby takes from a spoon rather than a bottle, because the texture is yours to set. Left to swell briefly it stays loose and easy; left longer it thickens into something a baby can work at. That control is useful in the weeks when a baby is still deciding how they feel about a spoon.
If this would be your baby's first cereal
Start somewhere simpler and come back to this one. A single-grain cereal lets you introduce one grain at a time, which is what this pouch cannot do. HiPP's Organic 100% Oats Porridge is the usual single-grain step before a mixed muesli.
Preparation
How to prepare HiPP Bircher Muesli
Three ways to prepare it, and the rules that apply to all three
Never heat the prepared porridge in a microwave, which HiPP warns carries a risk of scalding. Let the liquid cool to about 50 degrees Celsius before it meets the powder, because water that is too hot makes the muesli harder to dissolve, not easier. Make every bowl fresh, always spoon-feed it, and check the temperature yourself before your baby does.
50 °CCool the liquid to this

11 g1 to 2 tbsp, dairy-free

1
Boil, then cool
Boil fresh drinking water, or the whole milk if you are using the milk route, and let it come down to approximately 50 degrees Celsius. HiPP is explicit that liquid which is too hot works against solubility.
2
Measure the powder
Level tablespoons into a plate or bowl first, before any liquid: 2 to 3 tablespoons, 25 grams, for the formula and whole-milk routes, or 1 to 2 tablespoons, 11 grams, for the dairy-free cereal-fruit version.
3
Add the liquid to the powder
Pour the cooled liquid onto the muesli rather than tipping the muesli into the liquid, and stir it through. That order is how HiPP writes it and it lumps less.
4
Let it swell
Leave it standing until it reaches the consistency you want. The flakes take up the liquid as they sit, so a looser bowl means serving sooner and a thicker one means waiting.
5
Stir in the oil, on two routes
The whole-milk route and the dairy-free fruit route both specify one teaspoon of HiPP Organic Rapeseed Oil. The formula route does not call for it.
6
Check, then spoon-feed
Check the temperature before the bowl reaches your baby. Always spoon-feed this porridge, and make each meal fresh rather than keeping a made-up bowl back for later.

Do not use a microwave. HiPP states a scalding risk. Check the foil pouch is intact before first use, re-seal it after every use, keep it dry at room temperature, and use the contents within 3 to 4 weeks of opening.
Which preparation
Formula, whole milk or dairy-free: which should you use?
All three are HiPP's own instructions for this same pouch, so none of them is a workaround. The question is only which liquid suits your baby at the moment, and how far you want one pouch to go.

Dairy-free cereal-fruit porridge is HiPP's own name for the third preparation. It describes the way you make the bowl up, using water, fruit puree and oil instead of milk. Milk does not appear in this pack's ingredient list or in its allergy declaration, but the pack does carry four gluten cereals in every route.

Portions
How many bowls a 250 g pouch makes
A dry cereal has no fluid yield, so the useful number is how many bowls you get. It depends on which preparation you use, because the two milk routes take more than twice the powder the dairy-free route does.

The pack's own reference portion is 175 g prepared, and HiPP notes that about 30 g of fresh organic fruit goes into each of those portions. One pouch is therefore roughly ten breakfasts the usual way, or around three weeks of them if this is a few-times-a-week cereal rather than a daily one.
Figures are calculated from the gram weights HiPP prints for each preparation and the 250 g pack size. A level tablespoon varies, so treat the bowl count as a planning figure.

Questions parents ask
Frequently asked questions
How do I prepare HiPP Bircher Muesli?
Three ways. With made-up infant milk: approximately 200 ml cooled to about 50 degrees Celsius, stirred into 2 to 3 tablespoons (25 g) of muesli. With whole milk: 150 ml boiled then cooled to about 50 degrees, into the same 25 g, with a teaspoon of rapeseed oil. Dairy-free: 100 ml boiled and cooled water into 1 to 2 tablespoons (11 g), plus about 95 g of fruit puree and a teaspoon of oil. Let it swell, check the temperature, spoon-feed, and never use a microwave.
From what age can my baby have it?
From the 6th month, which is the age on this product. Earlier than that it is the wrong pack, because it brings four gluten cereals and two fruits at once.
Does it contain milk powder?
Milk does not appear in the ingredient list and is not named in the pack's allergy declaration. That is why HiPP's own third preparation is called a dairy-free cereal-fruit porridge: the dairy, if you want it, is the liquid you add.
Is it gluten-free?
No. It contains wholegrain wheat, rye and barley flour and wholegrain oat flakes, and the pack declares cereals containing gluten. We make no gluten-free claim for it.
Can I prepare it with water alone?
HiPP's water-based route is not water alone: it is 100 ml of boiled and cooled water with about 95 g of fruit puree and a teaspoon of rapeseed oil. A plain water-only preparation is not among the instructions given for this pouch.
How many portions does a 250 g pouch make?
About 10 bowls prepared with infant formula or whole milk, at 25 g of muesli each. About 22 bowls if you use the dairy-free fruit preparation, which takes 11 g. The pack's reference prepared portion is 175 g.
How long does it keep once opened?
Re-seal the foil pouch after each use, keep it in a dry place at room temperature, and use the contents within 3 to 4 weeks. Check the pouch is intact before you open it the first time.
Is this a good first cereal?
It is not the one to start on. A first cereal should bring one grain so that you can tell what your baby is reacting to. Introduce wheat, rye, barley and oats separately first, then this pouch becomes a straightforward next step.
