European formula stages, by your baby's age
European formula is sold in stages rather than one tin for the whole first year, and the stage number is tied to age. This is the thing most parents are trying to work out, so the Finder asks it first.
- PRE and Stage 1 — from birth to about 6 months. Both are suitable from day one. PRE is the gentlest and the closest to breast milk in composition, so it is usually the one chosen for a newborn. Stage 1 can also be used from birth and is often chosen for a hungrier baby.
- Stage 2 — from about 6 months. Introduced once solids begin, with a slightly different nutrient balance for a baby who is no longer taking all of their nutrition from milk.
- Stage 3 — from about 10 to 12 months. A follow-on milk for an established eater.
- Stage 4 and Junior — from about 12 to 24 months and beyond. A toddler milk, not an infant formula.
You can stay on a lower stage for longer. You cannot go below your baby's age. And if you are unsure whether to move up, there is no hurry — moving on a birthday is a convention, not a rule.
Cow milk or goat milk formula?
Most European formula is made with cow's milk, and most babies do well on it. Goat milk formula is a complete infant formula in its own right, nutritionally suitable from birth, and a good number of parents come to it after a baby has seemed unsettled on cow's milk.
Goat milk is not a treatment for cow's milk protein allergy — the proteins are similar enough that a diagnosed allergy needs a specialist formula and a conversation with your pediatrician. What parents often describe is a difference in comfort rather than a medical difference.
If you genuinely do not know which you want, choose Both in the Finder and look at what comes back. You are not committing to anything by looking.
If your baby is spitting up, gassy or constipated
The third question asks whether you have noticed anything in particular, because several European lines are built around exactly these situations — anti-reflux formulas thickened to stay down, comfort formulas with gentler proteins and reduced lactose, and hypoallergenic formulas with the proteins broken down further.
The Finder will show you which of those exist and which we hold. What it will not do is tell you that a formula will fix a medical problem. Persistent reflux, severe colic, blood in the stool, poor weight gain or a suspected allergy are conversations for your pediatrician first. If it helps, we will happily email you the full ingredient list for anything on this page so you can take it to that appointment.
Why parents look for European formula in the first place
European infant formula is made to EU rules, which set their own requirements on what may and may not go into a formula and on how it is labelled. The lines parents ask us for most — HiPP, Holle, Kendamil, Jovie and Nanny Care — are long-established European brands, and several of their ranges carry organic certification. Certification varies line by line rather than brand by brand, so the Finder shows you what each formula actually is instead of making a blanket claim.
We have been importing European formula for over eight years, we hold it in US stock so there are no customs delays, and everything we send out carries a long expiration date.
