How to use & dosage

Sanostol® plus iron is available in 230 ml and 460 ml bottles. Children over 6 years of age, adolescents and adults take 10 ml daily, which corresponds to one measuring spoon. It is particularly recommended during the growth phase, as well as in the case of a one-sided, vegetarian or vegan diet, which is often very low in iron.

The recommended daily intake should not be exceeded. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and a healthy lifestyle.

What it is

Sanostol Multi-Vitamin plus Iron syrup, 460 ml, for ages 6 and over

Sanostol plus Iron is a German multivitamin syrup with iron added, taken as a single 10 ml spoonful a day. It carries nine vitamins plus iron, it is intended for children from 6 years as well as adolescents and adults, and this is the 460 ml bottle, which holds about 46 daily doses. It is a food supplement, not a medicine.

This is the iron version of the classic Sanostol syrup, and the iron is the whole reason it exists as a separate bottle. Sanostol's case for it is growth: through a growth phase, and particularly through puberty, iron requirements rise, and a diet that was adequate before may not keep up with them.

The nine vitamins are vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, niacin and pantothenic acid, which is the same nine as the classic syrup and at the same amounts. The addition is 3.3 mg of iron per 10 ml dose, as iron gluconate, which is 24 percent of the European reference amount.

Who it suits is narrower than the classic bottle, and worth being plain about. A supplement with iron in it is not a general-purpose vitamin for every household. Sanostol names two situations: a period of rapid growth, and a diet where iron-rich foods are limited, which includes vegetarian and vegan diets. If neither applies, the version without iron is the one to look at.

The flavour base is orange and grapefruit juice concentrates with orange oil, the same as the classic. Unlike the classic, this bottle is not sweetened with sugar: it is built on sorbitol with the sweetener acesulfame K. It does contain a malt extract made from BARLEY, so it is not suitable if you are avoiding gluten. Sanostol makes this syrup in 230 ml and 460 ml bottles.

Who it is for

Who this bottle is and is not for

The age on this product is 6 years and over, which is three years later than the classic Sanostol syrup, and the iron is the reason. One 10 ml spoonful is the same measure for a six-year-old, a fifteen-year-old and an adult, so a single bottle serves a household, and at one dose a day the 460 ml size lasts about six and a half weeks.

It is not for children under 6. The dose does not scale down, and an iron supplement is not something to give a younger child on the assumption that less of it is proportionally safe. For a child from 3 years who needs vitamins rather than iron, Sanostol Multi-Vitamin, 460 ml is the right bottle, and for a child from 1 year, Multi-Sanostol Syrup, 300 g is dosed differently again.

It is also worth separating the two reasons people buy this. If the concern is a thin diet in general, a vitamin syrup is the straightforward answer and the iron is incidental. If the concern is iron specifically, that is a question worth asking a doctor rather than answering with a bottle, because iron status is something that can be measured and a supplement is not a substitute for knowing the number. Sanostol's own position is that a food supplement does not replace a varied and balanced diet.

If you do not need the iron

Take the version without it. Sanostol Multi-Vitamin, 460 ml carries the same nine vitamins at the same amounts, with no iron, and is suitable from 3 years rather than 6. Sanostol Multi-Vitamin Without Added Sugar is the same idea again without added sugar.

How to take it

Dosage and how to give it

Read this before the first spoonful

Sanostol's own notices for this product are three. The recommended daily amount must not be exceeded. Excessive consumption may have a laxative effect. And a food supplement should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle. Keep it out of the reach of small children.

This syrup contains vitamin A at 600 micrograms a dose. As a matter of general practice rather than a notice published for this bottle, anyone who is pregnant or who cannot rule out pregnancy should speak to their doctor before starting a vitamin A supplement, and the same applies if the person taking it is already taking another product containing vitamin A, vitamin D or iron.

1

Use the spoon in the pack

The dose is 10 ml, and the measuring spoon supplied is what makes that 10 ml. A kitchen teaspoon is roughly 5 ml, so measuring by eye is the easiest way to get this wrong in either direction.

2

One dose a day, and only one

Children from 6 years, adolescents and adults all take 10 ml daily. There is no second dose and no larger dose for an adult. Sanostol states that the recommended daily amount must not be exceeded.

3

Pick a time and keep it

Any time of day works. A supplement only does anything if it is taken consistently, so attaching it to a fixed daily point, usually breakfast, is worth more than the timing itself.

4

Give it straight or stirred in

It is a syrup and can be taken directly from the spoon. If that is a fight, it stirs into a drink or onto food without a problem.

5

Close it and keep it cool

Re-close the bottle after each dose and keep it away from heat, direct sunlight and damp. Store it out of reach of small children.

6

Watch the amount, not just the dose

Sanostol notes that excessive consumption may have a laxative effect, which is the sorbitol rather than the iron. Keeping to one spoonful a day is what that notice is asking for.

Daily amount by age

Who Daily amount Notes
Children from 6 years 10 ml One measuring spoon, once a day
Adolescents 10 ml Same dose as a six-year-old
Adults 10 ml Same dose again, so one bottle suits a household
Children under 6 years Not this product See Sanostol Multi-Vitamin, dosed from 3 years
Do not exceed one 10 ml spoonful a day, and note that excessive consumption may have a laxative effect. Both are Sanostol's own notices for this product. Because this syrup carries both vitamin A and iron, check the combined amount with a doctor or pharmacist before giving it alongside another supplement containing either.
Nutrition

The nine vitamins and the iron, and how much is in a spoonful

These are the amounts in one 10 ml dose, with each shown as a percentage of the European daily reference amount. Vitamin D is the one at 100 percent, the other vitamins sit between 42 and 75 percent, and the iron is the lowest proportion in the table at 24 percent.

Nutrient In 10 ml % of reference amount
Vitamin A 600 µg RE 75%
Vitamin D 5 µg 100%
Vitamin E 5 mg α-TE 42%
Vitamin C Not legible 75%
Vitamin B1 0.6 mg 55%
Vitamin B2 0.8 mg 57%
Vitamin B6 0.7 mg 50%
Niacin 9 mg NE 56%
Pantothenic acid 4 mg 67%
Iron 3.3 mg 24%

Reference amounts are those of the Food Information Ordinance, as stated for this product. RE is retinol equivalent, TE is tocopherol equivalent and NE is niacin equivalent. The milligram amount for vitamin C is not legible in the manufacturer's own published table for this product, so no figure is given for it here; its percentage of the reference amount is published as 75 percent. The nutrition panel printed on the bottle you receive is the complete figure set and governs.

What the label says these do

The iron is the nutrient this bottle is bought for, and Sanostol states two recognized roles for it: in children, iron contributes to normal cognitive development, and in adults it is needed for the formation of red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body. Vitamin C is worth reading alongside it, because vitamin C increases the absorption of iron from the same intake.

The remaining nutrients are listed above with their amounts, without function statements, because no function claim is published for them on this product.

Before you buy

Allergen and what to check

Contains BARLEY, and therefore gluten

Sanostol plus Iron is made with a malt extract from BARLEY. Barley is a gluten-bearing cereal, so this syrup is not suitable on a gluten-free diet. No gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan or vegetarian claim is made for this product.

Three things in the panel are worth knowing before you buy. The first is the barley-derived malt extract above. The second is how it is sweetened: this bottle is not the sugar recipe, and runs on sorbitol with acesulfame K as the sweetener, which is also what sits behind Sanostol's laxative notice. The third is that the flavour base is fruit juice concentrate rather than an added flavouring: orange juice concentrate and grapefruit juice concentrate, with orange oil.

On the label

Ingredients and more

Water, sorbitol (thickener), orange juice concentrate, malt extract (from BARLEY), sweetener acesulfame K, grapefruit juice concentrate, vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), thickener xanthan, acidifier citric acid, orange oil, sunflower oil, iron gluconate, preservative sodium benzoate, niacin (nicotinamide), pantothenic acid (D-panthenol), vitamin E (DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate), emulsifier polysorbate 80, vitamin B2 (riboflavin-5'-phosphate sodium), vitamin B1 (thiamine hydrochloride), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), vitamin A (retinyl palmitate), vitamin D (cholecalciferol).

Allergens: BARLEY, and therefore gluten.

This is the ingredient panel Sanostol publishes for Sanostol plus Eisen, in the order it is printed, translated from the German. The panel printed on the bottle you receive is the one that governs.

How long it lasts

How many doses a 460 ml bottle holds

A syrup dosed once a day is easy to plan, because the arithmetic is one division.

Bottle Daily dose Arithmetic Daily doses Roughly
460 ml, this one 10 ml 460 ÷ 10 46 6 and a half weeks
230 ml 10 ml 230 ÷ 10 23 3 weeks

Sanostol plus Iron is made in 230 ml and 460 ml bottles, and both are sold here. One person taking one dose a day empties this 460 ml bottle in about 46 days. Two people sharing it halves that, which is the usual reason to buy the larger bottle rather than the 230 ml size.

Doses are calculated from the stated 10 ml daily amount and the bottle volume, and the arithmetic is shown so you can check it. No 780 ml bottle is made of the iron version; that size exists for the classic syrup only. This product's own page does not state a shelf life after opening, so follow the date and the opened storage note printed on your bottle.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

How much Sanostol plus Iron do I give, and how often?

10 ml once a day, measured with the spoon supplied in the pack. That is the dose for children from 6 years, for adolescents and for adults alike, and Sanostol states that the recommended daily amount must not be exceeded.

From what age can it be taken?

From 6 years. It is not intended for younger children and the dose does not scale down. For a child from 3 years who needs vitamins without iron, Sanostol Multi-Vitamin is the right bottle, and Multi-Sanostol Syrup 300 g is dosed from 1 year.

How much iron is in a dose?

3.3 mg per 10 ml, as iron gluconate, which Sanostol gives as 24 percent of the European reference amount. That is the lowest proportion in the nutrition table, so this is a top-up rather than a treatment dose.

What is the difference between this and the ordinary Sanostol?

Two things. This bottle has iron in it and the classic does not, and this one is from 6 years where the classic is from 3. The nine vitamins and their amounts are the same in both. This bottle is also not sweetened with sugar, where the classic recipe is.

Does it contain gluten?

Yes. It is made with a malt extract from BARLEY, which is a gluten-bearing cereal, so it is not suitable on a gluten-free diet.

Why might my child need extra iron?

Sanostol names two situations: a growth phase, particularly through puberty, and a diet where iron-rich foods are limited, which includes vegetarian and vegan diets. Whether your own child needs it is a question for your doctor, because iron status can be measured rather than guessed at.

Is it a medicine?

No. Sanostol plus Iron is a food supplement, and Sanostol states that a food supplement should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.

How many doses are in the 460 ml bottle?

46, at one 10 ml dose a day, which is about six and a half weeks for one person. The 230 ml bottle holds 23 doses.

Why does the label mention a laxative effect?

Because the syrup is built on sorbitol, and sorbitol in quantity can have that effect. Sanostol's own notice is that excessive consumption may have a laxative effect, which is a reason to keep to the one spoonful a day.

Rebuilt from a legacy body that carried inline styling and no ingredient panel, nutrition table, dosage table or allergen statement. Written from Sanostol's own published product information for Sanostol plus Eisen on sanostol.de, which supplies the ingredient panel, the per-10-ml nutrition figures, the 3.3 mg of iron as iron gluconate, the 10 ml daily dose for children from 6 years, adolescents and adults, the two bottle sizes, and the three notices reproduced above. The iron and vitamin C function statements are the recognized European wordings for those nutrients as Sanostol states them. The milligram amount for vitamin C is not legible in the manufacturer's own table and is therefore left out rather than taken from the sibling product. The vitamin A caution for pregnancy is labeled as general practice, because it is published for the classic syrup rather than for this bottle. Dose counts are arithmetic on the stated 10 ml dose and the bottle volume. Last reviewed 17 October 2026.
