What it is

Sanostol Multivitamin Gummy Bears, nine vitamins, for ages 4 and over

Sanostol Multi-Vitamin Bears are German multivitamin gummies chewed as one bear a day by children from 4 years and as two bears a day by adults. Each bear carries nine vitamins, the recipe has no sugar in it, and it tastes of raspberry, blueberry and orange. It is a dietary supplement, not a medicine.

Sanostol is a long-standing German household name, and it is usually bought as a syrup. The bears exist for the child who has decided the spoon is not happening. The amount is deliberately simple, one bear once a day for a child, so there is nothing to measure and no second dose to remember, and the pack travels in a bag in a way a glass bottle does not.

The nine nutrients are vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin C, niacin, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12 and biotin. One bear delivers between 25 and 100 percent of the European reference intake for them, so a single bear is a meaningful fraction of a day rather than a token. Vitamin D is the one at 100 percent in one bear.

What it is for is narrow and worth stating plainly. This is a vitamin supplement for children to be chewed alongside food, not instead of it. The case for it is the stretch when a varied, vitamin-rich diet is genuinely hard to keep up: a child who rejects whole categories of fruit and vegetables, a run of colds through a school term, or a stressful period when meals slip. The pack states that vitamins C, A, D and B6 contribute to the normal function of the immune system.

The taste is raspberry, blueberry and orange, and the colour comes from coloring food concentrates made from carrot, apple, blackcurrant and cherry rather than from added colours. The bears are sweetened with maltitol and sucralose instead of sugar, and they are vegan. Sanostol also makes the same vitamins as a syrup, dosed by the spoonful from 3 years, and as a lozenge, if a chewy sweet is not what you want.

Who it is for

Who these bears are and are not for

The age on this product is 4 years and over, and that floor is set by two things at once: the amount of each vitamin in a single bear, and the fact that a bear has to be chewed. For a child of four or older who will take a sweet but not a spoonful, this is the form of Sanostol that actually gets taken, which is the only thing that matters with a supplement.

They are not for under-fours, and the amount does not simply scale down to half a bear. If you are looking for a vitamin for a younger child, the syrup is the form that is dosed lower: Sanostol Multi-Vitamin syrup is intended from 3 years and is sold here as Sanostol Multi-Vitamin, 460 ml.

It is also worth being clear about what a supplement is for. These bears do not replace a diet with fresh fruit and vegetables in it, and the pack says so in those terms. They are there to cover a gap, and if the gap is permanent rather than a phase, that is a conversation for your doctor rather than a pack of gummies.

If you would rather give a spoonful

The same nine-vitamin idea exists as a syrup, measured with a spoon rather than counted out in bears, and it is intended from 3 years rather than 4. It is sold here as Sanostol Multi-Vitamin, 460 ml, and there is a without added sugar version of it as well.

How to take them

Daily amount, for children and for adults

Read this before the first bear

This product contains vitamin A. Pregnant women should consult their doctor before starting consumption, and other dietary supplements containing vitamin A should be avoided alongside it. The stated recommended daily amount must not be exceeded. Dietary supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and a healthy lifestyle. Keep the pack well closed and out of the reach of small children.

1 bearChildren from 4 years
2 bearsAdults
Once a dayNot more
From 4 yearsMinimum age
1

One bear for a child, two for an adult

A child from 4 years takes one bear a day. An adult takes two. Those are the two amounts the pack gives, and there is no larger amount for an older child.

2

Chew it, do not swallow it whole

A bear is meant to be chewed. That is part of why the product starts at 4 years, and it is worth watching the first few until you know your child chews rather than gulps.

3

One dose a day, and only one

The stated recommended daily amount must not be exceeded. Two bears is the adult amount, not a second helping for a child who liked the first one.

4

Pick a time and keep it

Any time of day works. A supplement only does anything if it is taken consistently, so attaching it to a fixed daily point, usually breakfast, is worth more than the timing.

5

Close the pack and keep it cool

Protect the pack from heat, sunlight and moisture, and keep it well closed between days. Store it out of the reach of small children, which also stops a pack of sweets being treated as a pack of sweets.

6

Stop and ask if in doubt

If you are pregnant or might be, speak to your doctor before starting, because of the vitamin A. The same applies if your child is already taking another supplement containing vitamin A or vitamin D.

Daily amount by age

Who Daily amount Notes
Children from 4 years 1 bear One bear a day, chewed
Adults 2 bears Twice the amount a child takes
Children under 4 years Not this product See Sanostol Multi-Vitamin syrup, dosed from 3 years
Do not exceed one bear a day for a child, or two for an adult. This matters more than it does with most supplements, because vitamin A accumulates in the body. If your child takes another product containing vitamin A or vitamin D, check the combined amount with your doctor or pharmacist before giving both.
Nutrition

The nine vitamins, per bear and per two bears

These are the amounts printed on the pack: one bear, which is the daily amount for a child from 4 years, and two bears, which is the daily amount for an adult. Each is shown as a percentage of the European reference intake. Vitamin D is the one at 100 percent in a single bear, and the others sit between 25 and 50 percent, which is the shape of a supplement meant to top a diet up rather than to replace it.

Nutrient Per 1 bear % reference Per 2 bears % reference
Vitamin A (RE) 200 µg 25% 400 µg 50%
Vitamin D 5 µg 100% 10 µg 200%
Vitamin E (α-TE) 6 mg 50% 12 mg 100%
Vitamin C 30 mg 38% 60 mg 75%
Niacin (NE) 8 mg 50% 16 mg 100%
Vitamin B6 0.7 mg 50% 1.4 mg 100%
Folic acid 100 µg 50% 200 µg 100%
Vitamin B12 1.25 µg 50% 2.5 µg 100%
Biotin 25 µg 50% 50 µg 100%

Reference intakes are those of the Food Information Regulation, as printed on this pack. RE is retinol equivalent, TE is tocopherol equivalent and NE is niacin equivalent. The per-two-bears column is the adult amount; a child from 4 years takes one bear.

What the label says these do

Four of the nine carry a function statement, and the pack prints it above the table in these terms: vitamins C, A, D and B6 contribute to the normal function of the immune system. That is the only function statement on this pack, and it belongs to those four vitamins.

The other five nutrients, vitamin E, niacin, folic acid, vitamin B12 and biotin, are listed above with their amounts and without function statements, because this pack does not make any for them.

Before you buy

What is in them, and what to check

Sweetened with maltitol and sucralose, not sugar

There is no sugar in these bears. The sweetness comes from maltitol and sucralose, which are the first and the twelfth entries on the panel below. No allergen declaration is printed on this pack, and no gluten-free, lactose-free or organic claim is made for this product.

Three things on the panel are worth knowing before you buy. The first is the pair of sweeteners above, which is what makes this a sugar-free recipe rather than a reduced-sugar one. The second is that nine of the eighteen entries are the nine vitamins themselves, under their chemical names: L-ascorbic acid is vitamin C, retinyl palmitate is vitamin A, cholecalciferol is vitamin D, pyridoxine hydrochloride is vitamin B6, nicotinamide is niacin, DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate is vitamin E, pteroylmonoglutamic acid is folic acid, cyanocobalamin is vitamin B12, and D-biotin is biotin. The third is that the colour and the flavour come from fruit and vegetable concentrates and natural flavourings.

Storage: protect from heat, sunlight and moisture, and keep the pack well closed and out of the reach of small children.

This is the ingredient panel printed on the pack, in the order it is printed. The panel on the pack you receive is the one that governs.

  • Nine vitamins in each bear
  • No sugar in the recipe
  • One bear a day from 4 years
  • Two bears a day for adults
  • Colour from fruit and vegetable concentrates
  • A dietary supplement, not a medicine

Check the panel on the pack you receive before first use, and keep to the amount printed on it if it differs from anything here.

How long it lasts

How many bears a day, and how long a pack lasts

One bear a day for a child from 4 years, two a day for an adult. That fixes the rate exactly, and the rate is the half of the arithmetic that can be given honestly here.

The other half cannot. The number of bears in a pack is not stated anywhere on this product's page, so a doses-per-pack figure would have to be invented, and an invented number is worse than none. The count printed on the pack you receive is the one to divide by. What is knowable without it is below.

Who Daily amount Per week Per 30 days
Children from 4 years 1 bear 7 bears 30 bears
Adults 2 bears 14 bears 60 bears

To work out how long your own pack lasts, take the number of bears printed on it and divide by one a day for a child or two a day for an adult. A pack shared by one child and one adult empties three times as fast as the same pack used by the child alone, which is the usual reason a household buys the syrup in a large bottle instead.

The figures above are calculated from the daily amount printed on the pack and nothing else. No bear count, net weight or shelf life after opening is stated for this product here, so follow the count, the date and the storage note printed on your pack.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

How many bears a day, for a child and for an adult?

One bear a day for children from 4 years, and two bears a day for adults. Those are the two amounts printed on the pack, and the stated recommended daily amount must not be exceeded.

From what age can they be taken?

From 4 years. They are not intended for younger children, and the amount does not scale down to half a bear. For a younger child the syrup is the form that is dosed lower, from 3 years.

Are these a medicine?

No. Sanostol Multi-Vitamin Bears are a dietary supplement, and that is the legal designation printed on the pack. Two other Sanostol products sold here, Multi-Sanostol Syrup 300 g and Multi-Sanostol Syrup Without Added Sugar 260 g, are registered medicines. These bears are not one of them and are not a substitute for one.

Do they contain sugar?

No. They are sweetened with maltitol and sucralose instead, which are the first and twelfth entries on the ingredient panel on this page.

Can I take them while pregnant?

The product contains vitamin A, and the pack states that pregnant women should consult their doctor before starting consumption. Ask your doctor rather than starting them.

Which nine vitamins are in them?

Vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin C, niacin, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12 and biotin. The amount of each in one bear and in two is in the nutrition table on this page.

How many bears are in a pack?

That is not stated for this product here, so no count is given on this page rather than guess at one. The number is printed on the pack itself, and it is the figure to divide by when you work out how long a pack will last.

What gives them their taste and colour?

The taste is raspberry, blueberry and orange, from natural orange flavour and natural flavourings. The colour comes from coloring food concentrates made of carrot, apple, blackcurrant and cherry, and the bears are glazed with carnauba wax.
