What it is

HiPP Organic Fruits and Flakes Cereal, from the 10th month

HiPP Organic Fruits and Flakes is an organic children's muesli for babies from the 10th month. It is a dry fruit muesli of wholegrain cereal with fruit, carrying 1.1 mg of vitamin B1 per 100 g and 8.5 g of fiber per 100 g. There is no added sugar. HiPP places it as a breakfast bowl, made up with milk, and describes it as age-appropriate to a young child's nutritional needs.

At 10 months a baby is between two worlds: still largely on purees and milk cereals, but beginning to manage texture. A fruit muesli is the pack that bridges that. The flakes are soft enough to give way in milk and definite enough to be noticed, which is a useful step up from a smooth porridge without being a leap.

HiPP's own framing is about the morning. The first meal of the day matters for a young child's nutrition, HiPP states, and a child needs energy for a good start to the day. The panel supports that: 360 kcal and 66.8 g of carbohydrate per 100 g, with 11 g of protein, which is a substantial breakfast rather than a light one.

The fiber figure is the one that stands out. At 8.5 g per 100 g this is a notably high-fiber cereal for the age, which follows from the wholegrain content. HiPP makes no claim about what the fiber does and neither do we, but it is a real number and worth knowing when you are choosing between packs.

On the grain side the pack declares wheat, oat, barley, spelt and rye, all five of them gluten-bearing, and it flags possible traces of mustard. Five gluten cereals in one bowl is the reason this is not a first cereal, and we say more about that below. HiPP names apple, banana, grain and plum as the pack's main ingredients.

As a European baby cereal it is made to the EU organic standard from what HiPP describes as valuable, strictly tested organic ingredients, and HiPP states the pack carries no added sugar: the 13.2 g of sugars on the panel is the fruit's and the grain's own.

Where it fits

Where this one sits in the weaning day

This is the breakfast end of the day. HiPP presents it as the first meal, and a cereal with this much carbohydrate and protein behind it is built to carry a morning rather than to settle an evening. If you are using a milk cereal at bedtime, this is the pack that sits at the other end.

It is also a texture step rather than a nutritional one. By the 10th month the useful progression is away from smooth and toward something a baby has to work at slightly, and flakes in milk do that without asking for teeth. Served immediately the flakes stay distinct; left a few minutes they soften into something closer to a porridge, so you can pitch it where your baby is.

What it is not is a starting cereal. Five gluten-bearing grains arrive in one bowl here, and spelt is itself a type of wheat. If any of them were to disagree with your baby, a mixed muesli gives you nothing to isolate. The usual order is one grain at a time, a few days apart, and once wheat, oats, barley, spelt and rye have each been met singly this pack becomes the easy option.

If this would be your baby's first cereal

Start with one grain and come back to this one. HiPP's Organic 100% Oats Porridge is the usual single-grain step, and Organic Baby Bircher Muesli is the fruit-and-grain breakfast HiPP places earlier, at the 6th month, with four cereals rather than five.

Preparation

How to prepare HiPP Fruits and Flakes

Made up with milk, but we do not print the quantities

HiPP describes this muesli as simple to prepare with milk, and that is the method. We have not been able to verify a published measuring quantity for this particular pack, so we do not print one. Use the figures on the box you have. HiPP's sibling mueslis use their own measures, and we have deliberately not carried a figure across from another pack, because a measure is specific to the product it is printed on.

1

Measure the muesli into a bowl

Put the amount your box specifies into a bowl before the milk goes in. Measuring dry and into the bowl keeps the portion honest.

2

Add the milk your box specifies

HiPP recommends its own children's milk products across its muesli range. Any milk your family already uses in your child's food will make a bowl.

3

Stir it through

A spoon is all this needs. There is nothing to boil and nothing to cool, which is part of why a muesli suits a busy morning.

4

Decide how soft you want it

Served straight away the flakes stay distinct. Left a few minutes they take up the milk and soften, which suits a baby who is newer to texture.

5

Check it before you serve

Look at the consistency before the bowl reaches your baby, and soften it further if the flakes are still too firm for where they are.

6

Make each bowl fresh

Prepare each meal immediately before feeding. Do not make a bowl up in advance and do not keep a part-eaten one back for later.

Do not use a microwave. HiPP warns against heating a prepared cereal in a microwave because of the risk of scalding. Close the pack after each use, keep it in a dry place at room temperature, and use the contents up within the window printed on the box. Take good care of your baby's teeth, and raise with your pediatrician how a cereal should sit alongside milk feeds at your baby's age.
Nutrition

Nutrition per 100 g

This is the panel as it stands for this product. It reads as a wholegrain cereal should: carbohydrate dominant, protein high for a baby food at 11 g, fat low, salt negligible, and a fiber figure well above what a refined cereal would show.

Per 100 g Amount
Energy 1,520 kJ / 360 kcal
Fat 3.5 g
of which saturates 0.8 g
Carbohydrate 66.8 g
of which sugars 13.2 g
Fiber 8.5 g
Protein 11 g
Salt less than 0.05 g
Sodium less than 0.02 g
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) 1.1 mg

The 13.2 g of sugars is the fruit's and the grain's own. HiPP states this pack carries no added sugar. Figures are averages, as cereal panels always are, and a bowl is a fraction of these numbers before the milk is counted.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in it

Contains five gluten-bearing cereals

The pack declares gluten from wheat, oat, barley, spelt and rye, and flags that it may contain traces of mustard. Spelt is itself a type of wheat. No gluten-free claim is made for this product and none should be read into it.

The declaration as it stands on this product: contains gluten (wheat, oat, barley, spelt, rye). May contain traces of mustard. HiPP's own listing for this muesli gives the same two allergens, gluten and mustard.

On the label

What the pack is built from

HiPP names apple, banana, grain and plum as the main ingredients, with wholegrain cereal and fruit, and states the pack carries no added sugar and is produced to organic top quality under the EU organic regulation.

We print this as a description of the pack rather than as a quantified ingredient list, because we have not been able to source a verified declaration with percentages for it. The full list with its percentages is printed on the box, and no ingredient and no percentage has been guessed at to fill the gap. If you would like the declaration added to this page, send us a photograph of the panel and we will transcribe it.

Vitamin B1, thiamine, is present at 1.1 mg per 100 g and is the nutrient European rules require a children's cereal to carry. Nothing beyond that requirement is claimed for it here.

Read plainly, that is wholegrain cereal with fruit: apple, banana and plum against a five-cereal grain base, with thiamine added. Nothing is put in to color, flavor or sweeten it.

How far a box goes

A dry cereal has no fluid yield, so the number that matters is how many bowls a box makes. That needs the net weight and the grams of muesli in one bowl, and for this pack we can give you neither with confidence.

No net weight is stated for this product on our site. HiPP publishes this muesli in a 200 g pack, and we mention that so you have a figure to check against, but we have not used it to calculate anything, because the pack we sell may not be the pack HiPP lists. No per-bowl quantity could be verified either. So no bowl count appears on this page.

Take the net weight from the front of your box and divide it by the per-bowl grams in its measuring table, and you will have a count that is accurate to the pack you are holding rather than to an assumption about it.

We would rather publish a gap we can explain than a number we cannot stand behind. Send us a photograph of your box and we will transcribe the figures onto this page.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

From what age can my baby have it?

From the 10th month, which is the age carried by this product. HiPP's own listing for this muesli also places it from the 10th month.

How do I prepare it?

With milk. HiPP describes it as simple to prepare with milk, stirred in a bowl. We do not print the quantities, because we could not verify a published measure for this pack and we will not carry a figure across from a different one. Use the measure on your box.

Is it gluten-free?

No. The pack declares gluten from wheat, oat, barley, spelt and rye, and spelt is itself a type of wheat. It also flags possible traces of mustard. We make no gluten-free claim for it.

Does it contain added sugar?

No. HiPP states the pack carries no added sugar. The 13.2 g of sugars per 100 g on the panel comes from the fruit and the grain, which is what a fruit muesli at this fiber level would be expected to show.

Is the fiber content unusually high?

8.5 g per 100 g is high for a cereal at this age, and it follows from the wholegrain content. HiPP makes no claim about what the fiber does and neither do we; we print the figure because it is a real difference between packs.

Is this a good first cereal?

It is not the one to start on. Five gluten cereals arrive together, so a reaction would leave you unable to tell which grain caused it. Introduce them singly first, and this pack then becomes a straightforward next step.

What fruits are in it?

HiPP names apple, banana and plum alongside the grain as the main ingredients. We have not printed a quantified fruit list, because no verified declaration with percentages for this pack could be sourced.

What size is the box?

No net weight is stated for this product on our site. HiPP publishes this muesli in a 200 g pack; check the front of your box, because that is the figure that governs.

How many bowls does a box make?

We have not published a figure, because neither the net weight on our site nor a per-bowl quantity for this pack could be verified. Divide the net weight on your box by the grams per bowl in its measuring table.

Written from the age, nutrition panel, allergen declaration and product statements carried by this product, reproduced above as they stand: the 10 month age, the per-100-g figures including 8.5 g fiber, 11 g protein, 13.2 g sugars and 1.1 mg vitamin B1, the gluten declaration naming wheat, oat, barley, spelt and rye, and the possible traces of mustard. HiPP's own published listing for this muesli corroborates the 10th month age and gives the same two allergens, gluten and mustard, and names apple, banana, grain and plum as the main ingredients, with no added sugar and EU organic production. HiPP publishes this muesli in a 200 g pack; our site states no net weight, so that figure is quoted for comparison only and nothing has been calculated from it. No quantified ingredient declaration and no per-bowl measure could be sourced for this pack, so no preparation quantity and no bowls-per-box figure appears, and the page says so rather than carrying a measure across from a different product.
