What it is

HiPP Organic Milk Cereal with Corn and Fruits, from the 6th month

HiPP Organic Milk Cereal with Corn and Fruits is a gluten-free organic milk cereal for babies from the 6th month. It is built on 34 percent corn flour with 13 percent skimmed milk powder and whey, so the bowl is made up with water alone. It carries 2.9 percent banana flakes and 2.9 percent dried plum flakes, and a fortification package of calcium, iron, iodine, omega-3 ALA and vitamins A, B1, C, D and E. There is no added sugar.

The reason this pack matters is the one word on it that none of its siblings carry: gluten-free. Almost every fortified milk cereal is built on wheat semolina. This one is built on corn flour instead, and HiPP states plainly that it is gluten-free. If you are holding gluten back, or managing it in the household, this is the fortified milk cereal that still works.

It is a milk cereal, which means the dairy is in the powder: partially demineralized whey and 13 percent skimmed milk powder. HiPP prepares it with water, not with a milk feed, so making a bowl is one step rather than two. The pack declares milk, which follows.

The fruit is modest and even: banana flakes at 2.9 percent and dried plum flakes at 2.9 percent, the plum flakes themselves being dried plum puree with corn starch. There is also apple extract in the declaration. That is enough fruit to flavor the bowl without the pack becoming a fruit product, and HiPP states it uses no juice concentrates at all, which is unusual and worth noting.

The fortification is the full package, and each nutrient has a statement authorized for it. Calcium is needed to maintain normal bones. Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and to the normal cognitive development of children. Iodine contributes to the normal function of the thyroid. Vitamins A and D both contribute to the normal function of the immune system. Vitamin C increases iron absorption. Thiamine contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. And alpha-linolenic acid, the omega-3 the pack calls ALA, is needed for the normal growth and development of children. Those are the statements behind the pack and nothing beyond them is claimed here.

The pack also carries HiPP's PRAEBIOTIK marking, which on this declaration is the galacto-oligosaccharides obtained from lactose. We name it because it is declared, and we make no health claim for it, because none is authorized.

Where it fits

Where this one sits in the weaning day

A fortified milk cereal is the most substantial bowl in a baby cereal range, because it carries the milk, the fat and the mineral package together. That makes it the usual choice for the evening meal as weaning progresses, at the point where one milk feed starts giving way to a solid one. HiPP places it from the 6th month, which is where that transition normally begins.

Where it is genuinely the right pack rather than one of several is in a gluten-free household, or for a baby whose grains are being introduced slowly. Corn is one of the gluten-free cereals, and a corn-based milk cereal lets a baby have a fortified evening bowl without meeting wheat at all. That is a real gap in most ranges and this pack fills it.

It is also a simpler introduction than its wheat-based siblings in another way. Where a five-grain pack brings four or five cereals at once, this one brings corn, two fruits and milk. Fewer things arriving together means fewer candidates if something disagrees.

If gluten is the reason you are here

This is the pack to use. HiPP states it is gluten-free and builds it on corn flour rather than wheat semolina, which is what makes that possible. The fortification is the same kind of package as the wheat-based milk cereals carry, so you are not trading nutrition for the gluten-free status.

Preparation

How to prepare HiPP Milk Cereal with Corn and Fruits

Water only, and three portions by age

The milk is already in the powder, so this porridge is made up with water. HiPP gives three portions: a smaller one, one from the 6th month and one from the 8th, each with its own water volume and prepared weight. Follow the quantities below and keep to HiPP's dosage recommendations rather than approximating them.

35 to 45 gFlakes, depending on age
120 to 150 mlWater, depending on age
155 to 195 gPrepared bowl
Water onlyNo milk feed added
1

Boil fresh water and cool it

Boil fresh drinking water and let it come down before it meets the flakes. HiPP's printed guidance across its milk cereals is to cool the water to about 50 degrees Celsius, because water that is too hot works against the powder dissolving.

2

Measure the flakes into a bowl

Put the amount for your baby's age into a bowl before any water goes in. The table below gives HiPP's three options.

3

Pour the water on and mix

Add the measured, cooled water to the flakes and stir it through until it is smooth.

4

Let it swell

Leave the bowl to stand until it reaches the consistency you want. The corn flour takes up water as it sits.

5

Check the temperature

Check the bowl yourself before it reaches your baby. A porridge holds heat unevenly even when the outside of the bowl feels cool.

6

Feed it fresh, with a spoon

Prepare each bowl immediately before feeding and spoon-feed it. Do not make one up in advance and do not keep a part-eaten bowl back.

HiPP's own quantities, by age

Portion Flakes Water Prepared
Smaller portion 35 g (3 tbsp) 120 ml 155 g
From the 6th month 40 g (about 3 to 4 tbsp) 135 ml 175 g
From the 8th month 45 g (4 tbsp) 150 ml 195 g

Quantities are HiPP's own for this pack. Every baby eats a different amount and HiPP presents these as recommendations rather than fixed portions. The tablespoon figures are a guide to the gram weights beside them rather than a substitute for them.

Do not use a microwave. HiPP warns against heating a prepared porridge in a microwave because of the risk of burns. Close the box tightly after each use, keep it in a dry place at room temperature, and use the contents within the window printed on the pack. Take good care of your baby's teeth, and talk to your pediatrician about how a cereal should sit alongside milk feeds at your baby's age.
Nutrients

What the fortification is for

This pack carries a full nutrient package, and each item on it has a statement authorized for it. This is that list in the authorized wording.

Nutrient What is authorized for it
Calcium Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones.
Iron Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin, and to the normal cognitive development of children.
Iodine Iodine contributes to the normal function of the thyroid.
Vitamin A Vitamin A contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
Vitamin D Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system and is needed for the normal absorption and utilization of calcium.
Vitamin C Vitamin C increases iron absorption.
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) Thiamine contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
Vitamin E Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
Omega-3 ALA Alpha-linolenic acid is needed for the normal growth and development of children.

The pack's own wording for the omega-3 is about the growth of brain and nerve tissue. We print the authorized wording for alpha-linolenic acid instead, which is that it is needed for the normal growth and development of children, because that is the statement the nutrient carries. We have not been able to source a verified nutrition table giving the quantity of each nutrient per 100 g for this pack, so no amounts are printed and none has been estimated.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in it

Gluten-free, but it contains milk

HiPP states this cereal is gluten-free, which follows from a corn-flour base rather than a wheat one. It does contain milk, as partially demineralized whey and 13 percent skimmed milk powder, and the lactose-derived galacto-oligosaccharides come from the same source. No dairy-free claim is made for this product and none should be read into it.

On the label

Ingredients, as declared for this pack

34% corn flour, partially demineralized whey, 13% skimmed milk powder, vegetable oils (sunflower, rapeseed), galactooligosaccharides from lactose, 2.9% banana flakes, 2.9% dried plum flakes (dried plum puree, corn starch), calcium carbonate, apple extract, L-ascorbic acid, iron diphosphate, DL-alpha tocopheryl acetate, thiamine mononitrate, retinyl acetate, potassium iodate, cholecalciferol.

Reproduced from the ingredient declaration carried by this product. Always check the panel printed on the box you have, because artwork is revised from time to time and the box in your hand governs.

The last seven items are the fortification under their chemical names: calcium carbonate, L-ascorbic acid for vitamin C, iron diphosphate, DL-alpha tocopheryl acetate for vitamin E, thiamine mononitrate for B1, retinyl acetate for A, potassium iodate for iodine and cholecalciferol for D.

The galacto-oligosaccharides from lactose are what HiPP marks as PRAEBIOTIK. We name the ingredient because it is declared. No health claim is made for it, because none is authorized.

Read plainly, that is corn, dairy, two vegetable oils, two fruits at just under 3 percent each, and a mineral and vitamin package. HiPP states there are no added sugars and no juice concentrates, so the sweetness is the milk's, the banana's and the plum's own.

Portions

How far a box goes

HiPP gives the per-bowl quantity three times over, by age, so the arithmetic for a bowl count is ready. What is missing is the net weight of the box.

No net weight is stated for this product on our site and we have not been able to verify a published one, so we have not printed a portions-per-box figure. Take the net weight from the front of your box, divide it by the per-bowl grams for your baby's age, and you have a count that is accurate to the pack you are holding.

If you measure Flakes per bowl Water Bowls from a box
Smaller portion 35 g 120 ml net weight divided by 35
From the 6th month 40 g 135 ml net weight divided by 40
From the 8th month 45 g 150 ml net weight divided by 45
Net weight of this box Not sourced - Not calculated

A dry cereal has no fluid yield of its own, so bowls rather than ounces is the measure that means something. The prepared bowl weights HiPP gives are 155 g, 175 g and 195 g for the three portions above.

If you would like the net weight and a bowl count added to this page, send us a photograph of the front of your box and we will transcribe it. We would rather publish a gap we can explain than a number we cannot stand behind.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

Is it really gluten-free?

HiPP states that it is, and the recipe supports it: the base is 34 percent corn flour rather than wheat semolina, and the only other cereal component is corn starch inside the plum flakes. Always confirm on the panel of your own box, because a free-from status is only as reliable as the artwork in your hand.

How do I prepare it?

With water only. Boil fresh water and cool it to about 50 degrees Celsius, put the flakes in a bowl, pour the water on, stir, let it swell, check the temperature and feed it fresh with a spoon. From the 6th month that is 40 g of flakes with 135 ml of water, giving a 175 g bowl.

Do I add milk or formula to it?

No. Partially demineralized whey and 13 percent skimmed milk powder are already in the pack, so HiPP prepares it with water. That is what makes it a milk cereal rather than a plain one.

From what age can my baby have it?

From the 6th month, which is the age carried by this product. HiPP also gives a larger 45 g portion from the 8th month and a smaller 35 g one, so the same box follows your baby upward.

Does it contain added sugar?

No. HiPP states there are no additional sugars and, unusually, no juice concentrates either. The sweetness comes from the milk, the banana flakes and the dried plum.

What is the fruit content?

Banana flakes at 2.9 percent and dried plum flakes at 2.9 percent, the plum flakes being dried plum puree with corn starch. There is also apple extract in the declaration.

What does PRAEBIOTIK mean on the pack?

On this declaration it is the galacto-oligosaccharides obtained from lactose. We name the ingredient because it is on the label, and we make no health claim for it, because none is authorized.

How many bowls does a box make?

We have not published a figure, because no net weight for this pack could be verified. Divide the net weight on your box by 35, 40 or 45 g depending on the portion you use.

How long does it keep once opened?

Close the box tightly after each use and keep it in a dry place at room temperature. Use the contents within the window printed on the pack, which for HiPP cereals is usually 3 to 4 weeks.

Written from the age, ingredient declaration, nutrient statements, preparation instructions and three-row portion table carried by this product, reproduced above as they stand: the 6 month age, the gluten-free statement, the water-only preparation, the full declaration led by 34 percent corn flour with 13 percent skimmed milk powder and banana and dried plum flakes at 2.9 percent each, the no-added-sugar and no-juice-concentrate statements, the PRAEBIOTIK marking, and the 35, 40 and 45 g portions with their 120, 135 and 150 ml of water and their 155, 175 and 195 g prepared weights. Every nutrient statement is the authorized wording for that nutrient. The pack's own wording for the omega-3 is about the growth of brain and nerve tissue; the page prints the authorized statement for alpha-linolenic acid instead, that it is needed for the normal growth and development of children, and says on the page that it has done so. No claim is made for the galacto-oligosaccharides, because none is authorized. No net weight and no quantified nutrition table could be sourced for this pack, so no portions-per-box figure has been calculated and the page says so rather than estimating one.
