What it is

Holle Choco Chipmunk Crispy Cereals, 125 g, from 1 year

Choco Chipmunk is an organic crispy cereal for toddlers from 1 year: puffed corn flour at 50 percent and wholegrain oat flour at 32.5 percent, sweetened only with apple juice concentrate at 12 percent and flavored with cocoa powder at 5.5 percent. A 125 g box, vegan, lactose-free, made with Fairtrade cocoa and no palm oil.

The four declared ingredients plus added vitamin B1 add up to exactly 100 percent, which tells you there is nothing else in the box. For a chocolate-flavored children's cereal that is a short list: no cane sugar, no glucose syrup, no sweetener, no flavoring, no coloring and no preservative appears anywhere in it.

The sweetness question is the one most parents want answered, and here the declaration answers it cleanly. The only sweetening ingredient is apple juice concentrate, which is Holle's basis for stating that the sweetness comes from fruit. A concentrated juice still carries concentrated fruit sugar, so this is a sweet cereal rather than an unsweetened one, but the sugar in it arrives as fruit and not as an added sugar ingredient.

Cocoa is 5.5 percent and Holle states it is Fairtrade. The cereal is also made without palm oil, which Holle names explicitly; there is no added fat of any kind in the declaration. The puffing is done to the grain itself rather than with an oil, which is what keeps the list this short.

Holle labels it vegan and lactose-free, so there is no dairy in the recipe. It is not gluten-free: oat flour is a third of it, and Holle declares possible traces of a long list of other allergens, including milk. Read the allergen note below before a first bowl.

Where it fits

Where this cereal sits in a toddler's day

Holle gives two uses and both are honest: with milk for breakfast, or as a nibble between meals. A crispy cereal is one of the few products that genuinely works either way, because it is dry enough to eat from the hand and sturdy enough not to collapse the moment milk touches it.

As a breakfast it is the step after a spoon-fed porridge. At a year a toddler usually wants to do their own eating, and a bowl of crispy cereal with milk is a self-feeding breakfast in a way that a smooth porridge is not. It is messier, and that is part of the point.

As a snack it is the dry thing that goes in a pot and into a bag. A handful of crispy cereal is easier to carry than a biscuit and less sticky than a fruit bar, and because it has no added sugar ingredient it is a more defensible between-meals option than most chocolate-flavored products a one-year-old will ask for.

If your child is under a year

Choose a cereal placed at their own age. Holle puts this one at 1 year, and the cocoa and the apple juice concentrate are part of why. Holle's Organic Junior Muesli with Fruits is placed from 10 months, and its Organic Oats Baby Porridge is a single-grain cereal for the spoon-fed stage before that.

Serving

How to serve Choco Chipmunk

Two ways to serve it, and no quantities are published for either

Holle's instruction is simply to enjoy it with milk for breakfast or as a nibble between meals. No bowl size, no milk volume and no portion weight is published for this cereal on any source we can read, so none appears below. Follow your own box, and otherwise judge the bowl by what your child actually eats.

Two usesWith milk, or dry
No quantitiesNone published
Sitting upUpright, never lying down
Cool and dryHow to store it
1

For breakfast, pour a small bowl

Start with less than you think, because a crispy cereal looks like more in the box than it does in a bowl. You can always add. No portion size is published, so this is judgment rather than instruction.

2

Add milk, or a dairy-free alternative

Holle names milk, and the cereal itself contains no dairy, so a plant drink works equally well. Add it at the table rather than in advance; crispy cereal softens quickly once it is wet.

3

Or serve it dry as a snack

Straight from the box into a pot or onto a plate. This is Holle's second stated use and it needs nothing added.

4

Sit your toddler upright

At a table or in a high chair. Dry cereal eaten on the move is the situation to avoid, as with any dry finger food at this age.

5

Stay within reach

A crispy piece is light and softens in the mouth, but a one-year-old can still take too large a handful at once. Stay with them, especially for the dry version.

6

Close the box and keep it cool and dry

Fold the inner bag over and store the box in a cool, dry place. A crispy cereal that has taken up moisture goes soft and will not crisp up again.

No portion size, milk volume, bowl count or opened-box keeping time is published for this cereal on any source we can read, so no figures appear above. What is stated is the age, the 125 g net weight, the declaration and Holle's two uses.

Keep your toddler sitting upright, and stay with them. Holle prints no choking warning specific to this cereal, but the general rules for a dry finger food apply: upright, supervised, a small amount at a time, and never while lying down or walking. This cereal contains oats and so contains gluten, and Holle declares possible traces of milk, soy, sesame, mustard, lupins and several nuts. Store the box in a cool, dry place.
Sweetness, cocoa and iron

Three claims, checked against the declaration

This cereal carries three claims worth examining individually, because two of them hold up exactly as stated and one needs qualifying. The table sets out what we could and could not source for each.

The claim What the sources show How we treat it
Sweetness only from fruit The only sweetening ingredient in the declaration is apple juice concentrate at 12 percent. No sugar, syrup or sweetener appears. Stated, with the note that a concentrated juice carries concentrated fruit sugar
Fairtrade cocoa, no palm oil Holle states both. Cocoa powder is 5.5 percent of the declaration and no fat of any kind appears in it. Stated as Holle's own claims
Rich in iron Holle's wording is that wholegrain oat is a cereal naturally particularly rich in iron. That is a statement about the grain. No iron figure is published for this cereal. Not reproduced as a product claim; Holle's statement about the grain is quoted instead

The iron point matters enough to spell out. A nutrition claim such as a source of iron or rich in iron depends on how much iron is actually in a serving, and no nutrition panel is published for this cereal on any source we can read. We therefore make no iron claim for the product, and we have not estimated a figure. What Holle says about wholegrain oat as a cereal is reported as exactly that, and no health claim is made anywhere on this page.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in it

Contains gluten from oats, with a long list of possible traces

Wholegrain oat flour is 32.5 percent of this cereal, so it contains gluten and no gluten-free claim is made for it. Holle also declares possible traces of milk, soy, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, pecans, macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts, walnuts, sesame, mustard and lupins. That is an unusually long list, and it means this is not a safe choice for a diagnosed nut, sesame or milk allergy even though Holle labels the recipe itself vegan and lactose-free.

Allergens: may contain traces of milk, soy, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, pecans, macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts, walnuts, sesame, mustard and lupins. Reproduced from Holle's own declaration for this cereal. The declaration carried on this product gives a shorter list naming soybeans, milk, nuts and sesame seeds; both are given rather than merged, and the box in your hand governs.

Holle labels this cereal organic, vegan, vegetarian and lactose free, states that the cocoa is Fairtrade and that the cereal contains no palm oil, and describes it as a gently melting puffed cereal with a chocolate flavor. This product is certified organic under the EC Organic Regulations.

Packaging: Holle states the inner bag is made from a single material for better recyclability. Store the box in a cool, dry place.

No nutrition table is published for this cereal on Holle's own site or at any authorized retailer we can read, so none is given, and no iron figure exists for it. Nothing has been estimated and no figures have been carried across from another Holle cereal.

Four food entries and one added vitamin, totaling exactly 100 percent. Corn and oat between them are 82.5 percent of the box, the apple juice concentrate is the sweetener and the cocoa is the flavor. The thiamin is added because European law requires vitamin B1 in a cereal product of this kind.

Pack and portions

What a 125 g box gives you

The box is 125 g. A crispy cereal is light for its volume, so 125 g fills more bowls than the number suggests, but Holle publishes no portion size, so the bowl count is not a figure we can give you.

Figure Value Where it comes from
Net weight 125 g Stated on this product, which is authoritative
In ounces about 4.4 oz Arithmetic from 125 g
Corn flour about 63 g Arithmetic from the declared 50%
Wholegrain oat flour about 41 g Arithmetic from the declared 32.5%
Apple juice concentrate about 15 g Arithmetic from the declared 12%
Cocoa powder about 7 g Arithmetic from the declared 5.5%
Portion size Not published Holle gives none
Bowls per box Not published Cannot be calculated without a portion size
Nutrition per 100 g Not published Holle gives none

The ounce conversion and the four gram figures are arithmetic from the declared percentages and the 125 g net weight, and are labeled as such. The three rows marked not published are genuinely absent from every source we can read, including Holle's own product page, and have been left as gaps rather than estimated.

No monthly usage figure is published for a children's cereal of this kind. Those estimates exist for infant formula, where a child's whole intake is measurable, but a crispy cereal is a breakfast some days and a snack others. We have not invented one.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

From what age can my child have this cereal?

From 1 year, which is the age on this product and the same age Holle gives on its own page.

Does it contain added sugar?

No sugar, syrup or sweetener ingredient appears in the declaration. The only sweetening ingredient is apple juice concentrate at 12 percent, which is why Holle says the sweetness comes from fruit. A concentrated juice does carry concentrated fruit sugar, so treat this as a sweet cereal rather than an unsweetened one.

Is it gluten-free?

No. Wholegrain oat flour is 32.5 percent of the recipe, so the cereal contains gluten. We make no gluten-free claim for it.

Is it dairy-free and vegan?

Holle labels the recipe vegan and lactose-free, and no dairy appears in the declaration. However, Holle declares possible traces of milk, so for a diagnosed milk allergy the trace declaration is the one that matters rather than the vegan label.

Is it really rich in iron?

Holle's statement is about the grain, not the product: wholegrain oat is a cereal that is naturally particularly rich in iron. No iron figure is published for this cereal on any source we can read, so we make no iron claim for the product itself and we have not estimated a figure.

Is the cocoa Fairtrade?

Holle states that the cereal is made with Fairtrade cocoa and contains no palm oil. The cocoa powder is 5.5 percent of the declaration. No certifying body is named on the page we read.

How do I serve it?

Holle's two stated uses are with milk for breakfast, or as a nibble between meals. No bowl size, milk volume or portion weight is published, so the amount is your judgment rather than an instruction.

How many bowls does a box make, and is there a nutrition table?

Neither is published. Holle gives the 125 g net weight but no portion size, so we cannot tell you a bowl count, and no nutrition panel exists for this cereal on any source we can read. We have not estimated either or borrowed them from another Holle cereal.

How should I store it?

In a cool, dry place with the inner bag folded closed. Holle states the inner bag is a single material for better recyclability. No opened-box keeping time is published.

Written from Holle's own current product page for Choco Chipmunk Crispy Cereals, which is the source of the ingredient declaration of corn flour at 50 percent, wholegrain oat flour at 32.5 percent, apple juice concentrate at 12 percent, cocoa powder at 5.5 percent and added thiamin, the organic-agriculture footnote, the allergen trace list naming milk, soy, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, pecans, macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts, walnuts, sesame, mustard and lupins, the organic, vegan, vegetarian and lactose-free labeling, the statements that the cocoa is Fairtrade and that the cereal contains no palm oil, the description of it as a gently melting puffed cereal with a chocolate flavor, the two stated uses of with milk for breakfast or as a nibble between meals, and the note that the inner bag is a single material for better recyclability. The age of 1 year and the 125 g net weight are also stated on the product itself and are authoritative, as are the EC Organic Regulations certification, the shorter trace list naming soybeans, milk, nuts and sesame seeds, which is printed alongside Holle's longer one rather than merged with it, the sweetness-from-fruit statement and the cool-dry storage instruction. The ounce conversion, the per-box gram figures and the observation that the declaration totals exactly 100 percent are arithmetic from the declared percentages and the net weight, and are labeled as such on the page. Holle publishes no nutrition table, no portion size, no bowl count and no opened-box keeping time for this cereal on any source we can read, so none is given and nothing has been estimated or carried across from another Holle cereal. A rich-in-iron claim is deliberately not made for this product: Holle's statement is that wholegrain oat is a cereal naturally particularly rich in iron, which is a statement about the grain, and with no iron figure published for the cereal a product-level nutrition claim cannot be supported. That distinction is set out on the page. Promotional claims previously carried for this product are not reproduced, specifically that the ingredients are the finest and that the cereal ensures a healthy start to the day.
