What it is

Holle Organic Carrot and Spelt Biscuits, 125 g, from 1 year

Holle Organic Carrot and Spelt Biscuits are organic toddler biscuits built on Demeter spelt flour at 57 percent with carrots at 15 percent and dates at 15 percent. They come in a 125 g box, they are vegan and lactose-free, and Holle places them from 1 year. The sweetness is fruit sweetness: dates and apricots do that job, and there is no butter, no milk and no added sugar ingredient in the list.

What makes this biscuit unusual is that the vegetable is a real proportion of it. Carrots are 15 percent of the dry recipe, the same share as the dates, which puts the carrot well above the token level you often find in a European toddler snack. Together the carrot, the dates and the apricots make up 34 percent of the biscuit, and the spelt flour the bulk of the rest.

Every agricultural ingredient here carries the Demeter mark. Holle describes Demeter as the extra beyond organic, and it is biodynamic certification rather than a brand badge: a stricter standard that sits above the EU organic baseline. On this pack the spelt flour, the carrots, the dates, the sunflower oil and the apricots are all marked with it.

Because they are made without dairy and without egg, these are a vegan toddler biscuit and a lactose-free one, which is worth knowing if your toddler is avoiding either. What they are not is gluten-free. Spelt is footnoted by Holle as a type of wheat, so the biscuit contains gluten and is not wheat-free.

The one figure to keep in view is the sugar. The nutrition panel for this box gives 12 g of sugar per 100 g, which comes from the dates, the apricots and the grain rather than from anything added. That is a sweet biscuit by any reading, and Holle places it at one year rather than earlier partly for that reason.

Where it fits

Where these biscuits sit in a toddler's day

This is a snack for a child who is already eating family food. At one year a toddler has usually moved past purees and single-grain cereals entirely, is chewing, and is feeding themselves with their hands most of the time. A firm biscuit they can hold is exactly the right shape of food for that stage.

Holle's own framing is the break between meals, and that is the honest slot for it. It is not a breakfast and it is not a meal replacement: at 339 kcal per 100 g it is energy-dense, and a couple of biscuits with a cup of water or milk is a snack rather than a course. Used that way the carrot and date content means the snack brings something besides flour.

It is also the obvious box to reach for when you need a snack that survives a bag. It keeps dry, it does not need a spoon, and it does not need to be cold. For daycare, a car journey or a walk it does the job that a pouch does without needing a wipe afterwards.

If your child is under a year

Choose a biscuit placed at their own age instead. Holle puts this one at 1 year, and the sugar from the dates and apricots is part of why. Holle Organic Spelt Baby Rusks are placed from 6 months and have no sweetener in the list at all, which makes them the earlier step.

Serving

How to serve carrot and spelt biscuits safely

Ready to eat, but a firm biscuit still needs watching

There is nothing to prepare: the biscuits come ready out of the box. A firm biscuit in a one-year-old's hand is still a choking consideration, so the usual rules apply. Keep your child sitting upright, stay with them while they eat, and offer something to drink alongside, because a dry biscuit wants a drink with it.

Ready to eatNo preparation needed

SupervisedStay within reach
12 gSugar per 100 g
1

Sit your toddler upright

At a table or in a high chair, upright and settled. A child walking around with a biscuit is the situation to avoid.

2

Offer one or two, not the box

Decant a couple onto a plate rather than handing over the box. These are energy-dense and it is easier to judge a snack when it is already portioned.

3

Stay with them

Stay within reach for the whole snack. A biscuit this firm softens as it is chewed, and a toddler can break off a larger piece than they meant to.

4

Put a drink beside it

Water or milk from a cup. It helps the biscuit down and it rinses the sweetness off the teeth, which matters at 12 g of sugar per 100 g.

5

Or soften them in milk

Holle describes its biscuits and rusks as usable in a rusk porridge. Broken into warm milk these soften into a thick mash, which suits a younger toddler or a tired one. No quantities are published for that use on this pack.

6

Brush afterwards

A sweet biscuit is a good reason to keep up a regular brushing routine. The sugar here is fruit sugar, but fruit sugar behaves the same way on teeth.

No serving size, portion weight or per-biscuit weight is published for this pack, and no preparation quantities are given for the porridge use, so none appear here. Holle prints the 125 g net weight and the nutrition panel and nothing further about how much to serve.

Stay with your child while they eat a firm biscuit. Keep your toddler sitting upright and never let them eat a biscuit lying down or while walking. Reseal the box and keep it dry between uses. This biscuit contains gluten and may carry traces of milk, sesame, soy, mustard, lupins, almonds and hazelnuts, so check the declaration below before a first taste.
Nutrition

The nutrition panel, per 100 g and per box

This is one of the few Holle snacks that publishes a full panel, so it is worth setting out properly. The left column is Holle's own figure per 100 g. The right column is that figure scaled to the 125 g box, which is arithmetic on our part rather than a published number, and is labeled as such.

Per 100 g As declared Per 125 g box
Energy 1419 kJ / 339 kcal about 1774 kJ / 424 kcal
Fat 11 g about 13.8 g
of which saturates 0.8 g about 1.0 g
Carbohydrate 51 g about 63.8 g
of which sugars 12 g about 15 g
Protein 7.9 g about 9.9 g
Salt under 0.08 g under 0.1 g
Thiamine, vitamin B1 0.7 mg about 0.88 mg

The declaration as carried for this box writes its decimals with commas, in the European style, so 0,8 g and 7,9 g and under 0,08 g. They are reproduced above with periods for readability; the values are unchanged. The per-box column is our own arithmetic, the per 100 g figure multiplied by 1.25, and it assumes the box is exactly 125 g.

Two rows are worth reading twice. The sugar at 12 g per 100 g is all from the dates, apricots and grain, because no sugar ingredient appears in the list. And the salt is very low, under 0.08 g per 100 g, which is unusual for a baked biscuit and is a point in its favor for a toddler.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in them

Contains gluten, with traces of several other allergens

Spelt is footnoted by Holle as a type of wheat, so these biscuits contain gluten and are not wheat-free. Holle also declares possible traces of milk, sesame, soy, mustard, lupins, almonds and hazelnuts. The recipe itself contains no dairy and no egg, which is why Holle labels it vegan and lactose-free, but the trace declaration still names milk. No gluten-free claim is made for this pack.

Allergens: may contain traces of milk, sesame, soy, mustard, lupins, almonds and hazelnuts. Reproduced from Holle's own declaration for this biscuit rather than summarized.

Holle labels this biscuit vegan, vegetarian, lactose free, biodynamic and organic, and describes Demeter as the extra beyond organic. Note that the single asterisk here marks Demeter, not plain organic farming, which is the opposite of the convention on some other Holle packs. Every agricultural ingredient in this list is Demeter.

Read in order that is spelt flour, carrot, dates, sunflower oil, apricots, a raising agent and one added vitamin. Seven entries, five of them agricultural and all five Demeter. The vitamin B1 is added because European law requires thiamine in a product of this kind. Nothing is added to color, flavor or preserve it.

What a 125 g box gives you

The box is 125 g. What Holle does not publish is a per-biscuit weight or a piece count, so the number of biscuits in a box is not something we can give you honestly, and we have not estimated it.

What is known Figure
Net weight 125 g
Energy per box about 424 kcal
Sugar per box about 15 g
Biscuits per box Not published
Weight per biscuit Not published
Recommended portion Not published

The per-box energy and sugar figures are arithmetic from Holle's own per 100 g panel and the 125 g net weight, and are rounded. The three rows marked not published are genuinely absent from every source we can read, including Holle's own product page, so they have been left as gaps rather than filled with a guess.

No monthly usage figure exists for a product like this. Boxes-per-month estimates are published for infant formula, where a baby's whole intake can be measured, but not for a between-meals toddler biscuit whose use depends entirely on how often you offer it. We have not invented one.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

From what age can my child have these?

From 1 year, which is the age Holle gives for this biscuit. The product page itself describes them as biscuits for toddlers without naming a month, and Holle's own product page supplies the 1 year figure.

Are they gluten-free?

No. The base is spelt flour at 57 percent, and Holle footnotes spelt as a type of wheat. They contain gluten and are not wheat-free. We make no gluten-free claim for them.

Are they vegan and dairy-free?

Holle labels this biscuit vegan and lactose-free, and there is no dairy and no egg in the ingredient list. Holle does, however, declare possible traces of milk, so if your child has a diagnosed milk allergy rather than a dietary preference, treat the trace declaration as the one that matters.

Do they contain added sugar?

No sugar ingredient appears in the list. The 12 g of sugar per 100 g comes from the dates at 15 percent, the apricots at 4 percent and the grain. That is still a sweet biscuit, so we describe it as fruit-sweetened rather than as low in sugar.

How much carrot is actually in them?

15 percent of the dry recipe, which is the same share as the dates and well above a token amount. Carrot, dates and apricots together are 34 percent of the biscuit.

What does Demeter mean on this pack?

Demeter is biodynamic certification, which Holle describes as the extra beyond organic. On this biscuit every agricultural ingredient carries it, marked with a single asterisk: the spelt flour, carrots, dates, sunflower oil and apricots.

How many biscuits are in the box?

Holle publishes the 125 g net weight but no piece count and no per-biscuit weight, so we cannot tell you. Counting your own box is the only reliable answer.

Is there a nutrition panel?

Yes, and this is one of the few Holle snacks that has one. Per 100 g: 1419 kJ and 339 kcal, fat 11 g, saturates 0.8 g, carbohydrate 51 g, sugars 12 g, protein 7.9 g, salt under 0.08 g, thiamine 0.7 mg. The per-box column on this page is our own arithmetic from those figures.

Can I soften them in milk?

Yes. Holle describes its biscuits and rusks as usable in a rusk porridge, and these break down into a thick mash in warm milk. No quantities are published for that use, so add liquid gradually until the texture suits your child.

Written from the nutrition panel carried for this box, which is the source of the per 100 g figures of 1419 kJ and 339 kcal, fat 11 g, saturates 0.8 g, carbohydrate 51 g, sugars 12 g, protein 7.9 g, salt under 0.08 g and thiamine 0.7 mg, and from the 125 g net weight stated on the product itself, which is authoritative. The ingredient declaration, its percentages and its footnotes come from Holle's own current product page for this biscuit: spelt flour at 57 percent, carrots at 15 percent, dates at 15 percent, sunflower oil, apricots at 4 percent, sodium carbonates as the raising agent and added vitamin B1, with every agricultural ingredient marked Demeter and spelt footnoted as a type of wheat. The same page is the source of the allergen trace list naming milk, sesame, soy, mustard, lupins, almonds and hazelnuts, of the vegan, vegetarian, lactose-free, biodynamic and organic labeling, and of the age of 1 year, which the product page itself does not state. The per-125 g column in the nutrition table and the per-box energy and sugar figures are our own arithmetic from the published per 100 g panel and the net weight, and are labeled as arithmetic on the page. Holle publishes no piece count, no per-biscuit weight and no recommended portion for this pack, so none is given and nothing has been estimated. Promotional claims previously carried for this product are not reproduced, specifically a chewing-development claim and a popularity claim, because no manufacturer literature supports either.
