What it is

HiPP BabySoft Baby Care Balm Intensive, 300 ml, from the first day of life

HiPP BabySoft Baby Care Balm Intensive is a rich baby care balm for dry and rough skin, suitable from the first day of life. It is a 300 ml balm for sensitive baby skin, made with organic almond oil and panthenol. HiPP makes it without preservatives, without parabens and without paraffin or mineral oil, the recipe is stated to be biodegradable and free from microplastics and water-soluble synthetic polymers, the packaging is recyclable, and the formula is dermatologically tested.

The word to notice is intensive. This is the thickest product in the HiPP skin range, and it is built for the kind of skin that a thin lotion does not fix: the patches that stay rough after a bath, the cheeks in winter, the backs of the legs. A balm sits on the skin longer than a lotion does, which is the whole point of reaching for one.

The two active care ingredients are the ones HiPP names. Organic almond oil, which appears on the panel as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil, is the oil HiPP uses across the range. Panthenol is provitamin B5, a long-standing ingredient in skin and hair care. Behind them, sunflower oil is the largest oil in the formula and shows up second on the panel, straight after water.

What is left out is part of the specification rather than an afterthought. No preservatives is an unusual claim on a water-containing cream, and it is one HiPP makes for this balm specifically. There are also no parabens, no paraffin or mineral oil, no microplastics and no water-soluble purely synthetic polymers.

It does contain Perfume, so it is lightly scented rather than unscented, and it contains almond. As a German baby care product it is the one in the range for skin that needs more than the everyday lotion, used after a bath or wherever dryness shows, from the first day of life onwards.

Whose skin it suits

Whose skin this balm is for

HiPP dates this balm from the first day of life and describes it as gentle care for sensitive skin, for skin that is dry and rough. It is also suitable for skin prone to neurodermatitis. That is the honest description of who it is for. A baby whose skin is fine after a bath does not need a balm this rich; a baby with dry patches that keep coming back is exactly who it was made for.

Because it is from birth, the same jar covers a newborn and a toddler. In practice the way it gets used changes: on a newborn it tends to be a small amount on specific patches, and on an older child it becomes the thing that goes on after a bath in winter and is forgotten about in summer. Three hundred millilitres is a lot of balm, which is the point of the larger size.

Two things to be straight about. It contains Perfume, so if you specifically need a product with no fragrance in it at all, this is not that product. And it contains sweet almond oil, so read the panel before use if nut allergy is something your family watches for. Beyond the suitability statement above, no claim is made about any skin condition for this balm, and none should be read into it; if your baby's skin is persistently sore, broken or inflamed, that is a conversation with your doctor rather than a purchase.

If a balm is more than you need

A lotion absorbs faster and suits skin that is dry rather than rough. HiPP Baby Milk Lotion Sensitive, 350 ml is the lighter everyday option in the same range. Each product has its own ingredient panel, so check the one on the pack you buy.

Using it

How to use the care balm

Read this before the first use

For external use only. Keep it out of reach of children and away from the eyes. Stop using it if the skin becomes red or irritated, and speak to your doctor or pharmacist if that does not settle. Do a small patch first if your baby has reacted to a cream before. Check the ingredient panel on your own pack before first use.

HiPP publishes no quantity per application and no frequency of use for this balm, so none is stated here. The six steps below are general practice for applying a baby balm, not manufacturer instructions. Follow whatever is printed on the pack you receive.

1

Start with clean, dry skin

After a bath is the usual moment, because skin takes a balm better when it is clean. Pat dry rather than rub, and pay attention to the creases.

2

Warm a little in your hands

A balm is stiffer than a lotion. Rubbing a small amount between your palms first softens it, so it spreads without dragging on the skin.

3

Use less than you think

Start with a small amount and add more only where it is needed. A rich balm goes much further than a lotion, and too much leaves a film rather than absorbing.

4

Work it in gently

Smooth it on in the direction the skin lies, without pressure. Dry skin does not want rubbing, and a baby will tell you quickly if you are doing too much.

5

Mind the face and the eyes

Keep it away from the eyes and the mouth. On cheeks, use a smaller amount than you would on arms or legs and go carefully around the eyes.

6

Close it and keep it away

Close the pack properly after use and keep it out of reach. Wash your hands if you would rather not have balm on everything you touch next.

For external use only. Avoid the eyes. Keep out of reach of children. Discontinue use if the skin reacts, and speak to your doctor or pharmacist if it does not settle. This balm contains Perfume and sweet almond oil, so check the ingredient panel on your own pack before first use.
What is in it

What is in HiPP Baby Care Balm Intensive

The full ingredient panel for this balm is below, as carried by the pack. Underneath it is a translation, because a cosmetic panel is written in INCI names that say nothing to most people.

Lightly fragranced, and it contains almond

Perfume appears on the panel, so this is a mildly scented balm rather than an unscented one. Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil is sweet almond oil, which is the ingredient HiPP describes as organic almond oil. Read the full panel before use if nut allergy is a concern in your family.

On the label

Ingredients and more

Aqua, Helianthus Annuus Hybrid Oil, Glycerin, Ethylhexyl Stearate, Hydroxystearic/Linolenic/Oleic Polyglycerides, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil, Behenyl Alcohol, Panthenol, Sodium Anisate, Chondrus Crispus Powder, Xanthan Gum, Glyceryl Caprylate, Glyceryl Stearate, Sodium Levulinate, Perfume.

Allergens: contains Perfume, and contains sweet almond as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil. A cosmetic carries no statutory allergen declaration, so this is a read-the-label note and not a declaration. Names are given in INCI form, as printed.

Cosmetic formulations are revised from time to time. The panel printed on the pack you receive is the one that governs.

What the main ingredients are doing

On the panel What it is
Aqua Water, the base of the balm
Helianthus Annuus Hybrid Oil Sunflower oil, the largest oil in the formula
Glycerin Draws water into the skin, so it does not feel tight
Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil Sweet almond oil, HiPP's organic almond component
Panthenol Provitamin B5, used on skin and hair
Ethylhexyl Stearate An emollient that gives the balm its slip
Glyceryl Stearate Citrate An emulsifier, holding oil and water together
Behenyl Alcohol A fatty alcohol that thickens the balm
Chondrus Crispus Powder Red seaweed, used as a natural thickener
Xanthan Gum A plant-derived thickener
Sodium Anisate A salt of anisic acid, from anise
Sodium Levulinate A salt of levulinic acid, plant-derived
Glyceryl Caprylate A glycerin ester that also conditions the skin
Perfume The fragrance

The table above translates the main ingredients only and is not the full panel; it is not given in the order of the panel, and the panel above it is the complete list. No function is claimed for any ingredient beyond what it is, and nothing in this table should be read as a benefit claim for the product.

What is left out

What HiPP leaves out of it

On a baby balm the exclusions are often the reason for buying, so they are worth setting out properly with the qualifier that belongs to each rather than as a row of badges.

  • No preservatives
  • No parabens
  • No paraffin or mineral oil
  • No microplastics
  • Biodegradable recipe
  • Recyclable packaging
  • Dermatologically tested

No preservatives. HiPP makes this claim for this balm. It is a notable one on a water-containing cream and it is a reason to close the pack properly and keep it clean. No microplastics. HiPP's wording is free from microplastics and water-soluble synthetic polymers. Biodegradable recipe and recyclable packaging are HiPP's own statements for this product. Dermatologically tested describes a test, not a guarantee that no skin will react to it.

What is not claimed for this product

No fragrance-free, soap-free, vegan, cruelty-free or certified-organic claim is made for this balm, and none should be read into it. It contains Perfume. The organic reference belongs to the almond oil, not to the product: this is not sold as a certified organic cosmetic. This balm is stated above to be suitable for skin prone to neurodermatitis. That describes the skin it suits; it is not a claim that the balm treats, manages or improves a condition, and no such claim is made for it. No pH claim is stated, because HiPP publishes none for this product. If your baby's skin is persistently inflamed or broken, speak to your doctor.

Pack size

What you get, and how the HiPP skin range compares

This listing is one 300 ml pack. It is the large size in the range, which suits a balm you expect to use through a winter rather than finish in a fortnight.

How long it lasts cannot honestly be given as a number. HiPP publishes no quantity per application for this balm, and a balm is used by hand rather than measured, so any count of applications per pack would be invented. What can be said is how the HiPP skin products compare on size and on what each one is for, which is usually the real question.

HiPP skin product Size What it is for
This pack, Care Balm Intensive 300 ml Dry and rough skin, the rich option
Baby Milk Lotion Sensitive 350 ml Everyday moisture, lighter and faster absorbing
Gentle Care 2 in 1 Shampoo and Shower Gel 200 ml Washing hair and body, not a leave-on product
Gentle Family Bath Additive 1 litre For the bathwater itself

These are separate HiPP products with separate ingredient panels, listed here by size and purpose only. No equivalence between their formulas is implied. No number of applications per pack is claimed, because no quantity per application is published for this product.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

From what age can I use it?

From the first day of life, which is the age HiPP gives for this product. There is no separate newborn version to start on first.

What is the difference between this and the milk lotion?

Thickness and purpose. The balm is the rich one, for skin that is dry and rough; the lotion is lighter and absorbs faster for everyday moisture. They are different products with different panels.

Does it really contain no preservatives?

That is HiPP's own claim for this balm. It is worth taking seriously in both directions: it is a reason some parents choose it, and it is a reason to close the pack properly and keep your fingers clean when you use it.

Is it fragrance-free?

No. Perfume is on the ingredient panel, so it is a lightly scented balm. If you need a product with no fragrance in it at all, this is not the one.

Does it contain nuts?

It contains sweet almond oil, listed on the panel as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil. Read the full panel before use if nut allergy is a concern in your family.

Can I use it on a skin condition?

This balm is stated to be suitable for skin prone to neurodermatitis, which describes the skin it suits rather than claiming it treats anything. It is a cosmetic care balm for dry and rough skin and no treatment claim is made for it. If your baby's skin is persistently inflamed, sore or broken, speak to your doctor.

Is this an organic product?

No. HiPP describes it as made with organic almond oil, and that organic reference belongs to the almond oil. The balm itself is not sold as a certified organic cosmetic and we make no organic claim for it.

How much should I use, and how often?

HiPP does not publish a quantity per application or a frequency for this product, so we do not state one. A rich balm goes further than a lotion, so start with less. Follow whatever is printed on the pack you receive.

Can I use it on my own skin?

Nothing in it is reserved for babies, but it is sold as a baby product and HiPP's instructions are written for that use. Read the panel and judge for yourself.

The rest of the HiPP bath and skin care range

Written from the ingredient panel and claim block carried by this pack. Only statements carried by those sources are made. The from-birth age and the 300 ml pack size shown on this page are taken from the product itself. No application instruction, quantity per application or frequency of use is published for this product by HiPP, so none is stated and the steps above are identified as general practice. No pH claim is made, because HiPP publishes none for this balm. The statement that the balm is suitable for skin prone to neurodermatitis, carried by an earlier version of this listing, has been restored on the instruction of this store, as a statement of suitability and not as a claim to treat or improve any condition. HiPP publishes the equivalent wording for other products in its baby care range; no HiPP source naming this 300 ml balm was reachable when this page was reviewed, so the statement is given on the store's authority rather than attributed to HiPP. Last reviewed 20 October 2026.
