What it is

HiPP Gentle Baby Bath Additive, 350 ml, from the first day of life

This is a baby bath additive that goes into the bathwater rather than onto your baby, suitable from the first day of life. It is a 350 ml bottle for sensitive baby skin, HiPP publishes a dose for it, and it is soap-free. HiPP's own instruction is 2 to 3 strong splashes in water at about 36 °C, and a bath of 5 to 7 minutes.

A bath additive is a different thing from a wash, and the difference matters when you are choosing. A wash gel goes on your baby and gets rinsed off. This goes into the water, so your baby sits in it for the length of the bath. That is why HiPP gives it a dose, a water temperature and a bath time, and why those three numbers are worth following rather than guessing at.

HiPP states that this particularly mild baby bath cleanses sensitive baby skin gently from the first day of life and preserves the natural skin balance. It is soap-free, and HiPP states that it preserves the skin's natural pH and does not sting the eyes, which on a product your baby sits in for several minutes is the claim that gets tested every single bath.

The reason it is a bath additive rather than a plain cleanser is what HiPP builds into it: re-fatting care substances, HiPP's own term for the ingredients that put oils back rather than taking them away. That is why HiPP states it is also suitable for dry skin and for skin prone to neurodermatitis. The care side comes from valuable components of organic almonds, HiPP's description of the sweet almond extract on the panel, and HiPP states the product's skin compatibility is dermatologically tested.

What has been left out is part of the specification. HiPP gives this bath a recipe without microplastics and without water-soluble, purely synthetic polymers, and makes it without parabens and without mineral oil and paraffins. The formula is stated to be biodegradable and the packaging recyclable. As a German baby care product it is the everyday bottle for bath time rather than a specialist one.

Whose skin it suits

Whose skin this bottle is for

HiPP dates this from the first day of life and describes it for sensitive baby skin, adding that it is also suitable for dry skin and for skin prone to neurodermatitis because of the re-fatting care substances in it. That is the group it is really aimed at: babies whose skin tightens or flakes after an ordinary bath, where the water itself is part of the problem and a plain cleanser makes it worse.

It is worth being straight about who it is not for. This bath additive contains Parfum, so the bathwater is lightly scented rather than unscented. If you need something with no fragrance in it at all, this is not that product. It also contains sweet almond seed extract, so read the panel before use if nut allergy is something your family watches for.

And it is not a shampoo and not a body wash. You do not put it on your baby's hair or lather it on the skin; it is diluted in the bathwater and your baby bathes in it. If what you want is the washing step, that is a different product in the range. Where this one sits is the bath itself: run the water, add the dose, bathe, then pat dry and follow with a lotion or cream if the skin tends to dryness.

If you want the washing step instead

For hair and skin washed directly and rinsed off there is HiPP Baby Gentle Care 2 in 1 Shampoo and Shower Gel, 200 ml, or for hair alone HiPP Baby Shampoo, 200 ml. Those go on your baby; this one goes in the water. Each has its own ingredient panel, so check the one on the bottle you buy.

Using it

How to use it, with HiPP's own dose

Read this before the first bath

Never leave a baby alone in or near water, not for a moment and not for a reach. This product is for external use only and is meant to be diluted in the bathwater, never applied undiluted. Keep the bottle out of reach and away from the edge of the bath. Rinse with clean water if any gets in the eyes. Stop using it if the skin becomes red or irritated, and speak to your doctor or pharmacist if that does not settle.

Unusually for a baby care product, HiPP does publish a dose, a water temperature and a bath time for this one, and steps 3 to 5 below are HiPP's own instruction rather than general practice. HiPP's wording is: add 2 to 3 strong splashes to water at approximately 36 °C and bathe for 5 to 7 minutes. The remaining steps are general practice for bathing a baby. Follow whatever is printed on the bottle you receive.

1

Get everything ready first

Towel, clean clothes and the bottle all within arm's reach before your baby goes anywhere near the water. The point is that you never have to turn away or stand up.

2

Run the bath first, additive second

Fill the bath to the depth you want before you add anything, so the dose lands in the full volume of water rather than being concentrated in an inch of it.

3

Two to three strong splashes

HiPP's own dose for a baby bath. A splash is deliberately not a precise measure; it means a generous squeeze from the bottle rather than a capful, and more than three does not make the bath milder.

4

About 36 degrees Celsius

HiPP's stated bath temperature, which is close to body temperature and feels barely warm to an adult hand. Test it with your wrist or elbow, or with a bath thermometer, and run the cold tap last.

5

Bathe for five to seven minutes

HiPP's stated bath time. Longer is not better: skin softens and loses moisture the longer it stays in water, which is the opposite of what a re-fatting bath is there to do.

6

Lift out, pat dry, then moisturise

No separate rinse is needed after a bath additive. Pat rather than rub, dry the neck folds, behind the ears and the backs of the knees properly, and follow with a lotion or cream if the skin tends to dryness.

Never leave a baby unattended in or near water. For external use only, and to be diluted in the bathwater rather than applied neat. Avoid direct contact with the eyes and rinse with clean water if it happens. Keep the bottle out of reach of children. Discontinue use if the skin reacts, and check the ingredient panel on your bottle before first use.
What is in it

What is in HiPP Gentle Baby Bath Additive

The full ingredient panel for this bottle is below, as published for this listing and matching HiPP's own published panel for the 350 ml bath entry for entry. Underneath it is a translation, because an ingredient panel is written in INCI names that say nothing to most people.

Lightly fragranced, and it contains almond

Parfum appears in the ingredient panel, so the bathwater is mildly scented rather than unscented. Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Seed Extract is sweet almond, which is the ingredient HiPP describes as the valuable components of organic almonds. Read the full panel before use if nut allergy is a concern in your family.

On the label

Ingredients and more

Water, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Coco-Glucoside, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Sodium Chloride, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Seed Extract, Tocopherol, Glyceryl Oleate, Glycerin, Glycol Distearate, Citric Acid, Glyceryl Stearate, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides Citrate, Sodium Anisate, Levulinic Acid, Sodium Levulinate, Benzoic Acid, Parfum.

Allergens: contains Parfum, and contains sweet almond as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Seed Extract. A cosmetic carries no statutory allergen declaration, so this is a read-the-label note and not a declaration. Names are given in INCI form, as printed.

All nineteen entries match HiPP's own published panel for this 350 ml bath in the same order. The entry previously shown here as Sodium Anisates is HiPP's Sodium Anisate, corrected to the published spelling. The panel printed on the bottle you receive is the one that governs, and cosmetic formulations are revised from time to time.

What the main ingredients are doing

On the panel What it is
Water The base of the bath additive
Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate A plant-derived ingredient that holds moisture
Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine A mild cleanser, used in low-irritation formulas
Coco-Glucoside A mild sugar-based cleanser, derived from coconut
Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate A third mild cleanser, not a soap
Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Seed Extract Sweet almond seed extract, HiPP's organic almond component
Glyceryl Oleate and Glyceryl Stearate The softening, re-fatting pair that puts oils back
Glycol Distearate Gives the liquid its soft, slightly pearly body
Glycerin Draws water into the skin, so it does not feel tight afterwards
Tocopherol Vitamin E
Citric Acid Adjusts the pH, which is how the bath is kept skin-friendly
Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides Citrate A co-emulsifier that keeps the formula stable
Sodium Chloride Salt, used to thicken the liquid
Parfum The fragrance

The table above translates the main ingredients only and is not the full panel; it is not given in the order of the panel, and the panel above it is the complete list. The panel printed on the bottle you receive is the one that governs.

What is left out

What HiPP leaves out of it

On something your baby sits in, the exclusions are often the reason for buying, so they are worth setting out properly with the qualifier that belongs to each one rather than as a row of badges.

  • Recipe without microplastics
  • No parabens
  • No mineral oil or paraffins
  • Soap-free
  • Preserves the skin's pH
  • Does not sting the eyes
  • Dermatologically tested
  • Biodegradable formula
  • Recyclable packaging

Recipe without microplastics. HiPP's own wording is a recipe without microplastics and without water-soluble, purely synthetic polymers. Soap-free, preserves the skin's pH, does not sting the eyes and dermatologically tested skin compatibility are all published by HiPP in its own product information for this bath. Biodegradable formula. HiPP states the recipe is biodegradable, and its own product information for this article states the formula is 100% biodegradable. Recyclable packaging. HiPP states the packaging is recyclable.

What is not claimed for this bath

No fragrance-free, vegan, cruelty-free, organic, colorant-free, preservative-free or PEG-free claim is made for this bath additive, and none should be read into it. It contains Parfum. The organic reference belongs to the almond component, not to the product: this is not sold as a certified organic cosmetic. HiPP does publish one suitability statement about skin, that this bath is also suitable for dry skin and for skin prone to neurodermatitis, and it is given above. That is a statement about the skin the bath suits, and nothing here claims it treats, manages or improves any condition. Other bottles in the HiPP range publish exclusions that this one does not, including a vegan statement on the baby shampoo, and a claim is only repeated here when HiPP publishes it for this product.

Pack size

What you get, and how many baths a 350 ml bottle gives

This listing is one 350 ml bottle of bath additive. It is not a wash, so it does not replace a shampoo or a body wash; it is the bottle for the water itself.

How many baths it gives cannot honestly be given as a number, even though HiPP publishes a dose. The dose is 2 to 3 strong splashes, and a splash is not a volume: it depends on the squeeze, the bottle and how full the bath is. Dividing 350 ml by an undefined unit would produce a number that looks precise and is not, so none is stated here. What can be said is how the HiPP bath and wash products compare on size and purpose.

HiPP product Size Where it goes
This bottle, bath additive 350 ml Into the bathwater
Super Gentle Care Bath Cleanser 350 ml Into the bathwater
Baby Shampoo 200 ml Onto the hair, then rinsed
2 in 1 Shampoo and Shower Gel 200 ml Onto hair and body, then rinsed
Head to Toe Wash Gel 400 ml Onto hair and body, then rinsed

These are separate HiPP products with separate ingredient panels, listed here by size and purpose only. No equivalence between their formulas is implied, and a claim published for one of them is not published for the others. No number of baths per bottle is claimed, because HiPP's dose is given in splashes rather than millilitres.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

How much do I add, and how hot should the water be?

HiPP's own instruction is 2 to 3 strong splashes in water at approximately 36 degrees Celsius, with a bath of 5 to 7 minutes. That is one of the few baby care products with a published dose, so it is worth following rather than guessing.

From what age can I use it?

From the first day of life, which is the age HiPP gives for this bath. There is no separate newborn version to start on first.

Do I rinse my baby afterwards?

A bath additive is diluted in the water, so no separate rinse is needed. Lift your baby out, pat dry, dry the skin folds properly and follow with a lotion or cream if the skin tends to dryness.

Can I use it as a shampoo or a body wash?

No. It is made to be diluted in the bathwater rather than applied neat to hair or skin. For the washing step HiPP makes separate products with their own ingredient panels.

Is it soap-free?

Yes. HiPP publishes this bath as soap-free in its own product information for the 350 ml bottle, and states that it preserves the skin's natural pH and does not sting the eyes.

Is it fragrance-free?

No. Parfum is in the ingredient panel, so the bathwater is lightly scented. If you need a product with no fragrance in it at all, this is not the one.

Does it contain nuts?

It contains sweet almond seed extract, listed on the panel as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Seed Extract. Read the full ingredient panel before use if nut allergy is a concern in your family.

Is this an organic bath product?

No. HiPP describes it as containing valuable components of organic almonds, and that organic reference belongs to the almond component. The bath additive itself is not sold as a certified organic cosmetic and we make no organic claim for it.

The rest of the HiPP bath and skin care range

Written from HiPP's own published product information for its 350 ml baby care bath, including HiPP's product information sheet for the article and the German retail product data HiPP supplies for it, which is the source of the published dose, water temperature and bath time. Only statements carried by those sources are made. The from-birth age and the 350 ml pack size are confirmed by HiPP's published product data and are unchanged. HiPP's own suitability statement for this article, published by HiPP as "ist auch bei trockener und zu Neurodermitis neigender Haut geeignet" and carried on HiPP's label artwork for the article, is restored here in both places it had been removed from, as a statement of suitability and not as a claim to treat, manage or improve any condition. A line of internal text that had been left in the opening paragraph remains removed. No vegan claim is made, because HiPP does not publish one for this product even though it publishes one for its baby shampoo. Last reviewed 20 October 2026.
