What is HiPP HA Dutch Stage 2 Hydrolyzed Combiotic Formula?

HiPP HA Dutch Stage 2 is a Dutch hydrolysed follow-on formula for babies from 6 to 12 months, in which the whey protein has been broken down to roughly 86–87% of its original size. It is made for babies in families with a history of allergy, to help reduce the risk of a cow's milk protein allergy developing. It keeps HiPP's Combiotik system throughout: 0.4g of galacto-oligosaccharides per 100ml as the prebiotic fibre, plus the live culture Limosilactobacillus fermentum hereditum, the strain HiPP originally isolated from breast milk. The gentleness argument rests on those two named things — a shorter protein and a gut-support pairing — and not on ingredient purity.

This tin is not organic certified, and no HA formula is. EU rules do not permit an organic claim on a finished product containing hydrolysed protein, even though most of the non-hydrolysed ingredients in this recipe are organically sourced. It is free from added sugar, soy, gluten and GMOs, and honest framing beats a claim we cannot make. What's in HiPP HA Dutch Stage 2 per 100ml?

Prepared as directed, every 100ml provides 68 kcal, 3.7g fat (of which 1.59g saturates), 1.3g protein as hydrolysed whey, 7.2g carbohydrate (7.19g of it lactose), 77mg calcium, 1.0mg iron and 13.6mg DHA sourced from fish oil. The prebiotic is GOS at 0.4g per 100ml, and the live culture is Limosilactobacillus fermentum hereditum.

Compared with Stage 1 of the same line, three things move and everything else holds: iron rises from 0.60mg to 1.0mg, calcium from 52mg to 77mg, and the GOS level goes up. That is the standard shape of a follow-on milk — a six-month-old's iron stores from birth are running down just as solids begin, so the formula picks up the slack rather than changing character.

Who is HiPP HA Dutch Stage 2 for — and who should not use it?

It is for a healthy baby of 6 to 12 months in a family where a parent or sibling has an allergic condition such as eczema, asthma, hay fever or a food allergy, used alongside solid food to help reduce the risk that the baby develops a cow's milk protein allergy. It is not for a baby who already has a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy — that baby needs an extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed by a doctor, and this tin is not one.

The letters on the box cause most of the confusion. HA stands for hypoallergenic, which in ordinary English sounds like a promise that nothing will happen. In infant formula it means something much narrower: the protein has been broken down enough to lower the chance of sensitising an at-risk baby who does not yet have an allergy. It is prevention, not treatment. The formula still contains cow's milk protein — in short fragments rather than whole chains.

The dividing line is a diagnosis. No diagnosis, allergy in the family, and your doctor has suggested a hydrolysed formula: this tin is built for that. A diagnosis already made, or a baby reacting to milk with vomiting, blood in the stool, hives, swelling or breathing trouble: do not buy this, and speak to your doctor today, because a baby with confirmed CMPA can react to partially hydrolysed protein.

What is not in HiPP HA Dutch Stage 2?

No added sugar, no soy, no gluten and no GMO ingredients. There is no maltodextrin and no added starch either — the only carbohydrate is lactose, at 7.19g of the 7.2g total. What is genuinely missing is an organic certificate on the finished product: EU rules do not allow one on a formula containing hydrolysed protein, so this tin is not organic, and no HA formula from any brand is.

How does HiPP HA Dutch Stage 2 compare to HiPP HA 2 German and Aptamil HA 2?

None of the three is organic certified, because hydrolysed protein rules it out under EU regulation. The Dutch and German HiPP HA Stage 2 tins share a near-identical nutrition panel — same 68 kcal, same 1.3g protein, same GOS level — but come in different tin sizes, 800g against 600g. Aptamil HA 2 differs more substantially, with a GOS and FOS prebiotic pair and a different live culture.

Being straight with you: on paper HiPP HA 2 German is the same formula as this one — identical published macros, identical GOS, identical DHA — in a smaller 600g tin at a lower shelf price. If cost per prepared ounce is what decides it, work that number out for both tins before you buy, because the shelf prices are not comparable. Boil fresh water and let it cool to 40–50°C, pour the measured water into a sterilised bottle first, then add the number of level 4.7g scoops shown on your tin's feeding table for your baby's age, shake until fully dissolved, cool to drinking temperature, about 37°C (98.6°F), and feed within one hour.
