Holle Organic Apple and Banana with Spelt Puree, 190 g per jar, two jars, from the 6th month
Holle Organic Apple and Banana with Spelt is a smooth organic fruit and grain puree for babies from the 6th month, sold here as two 190 g jars. It is a fruit baby food jar with a cereal in it: apple at 46 percent and banana at 12 percent, with wholegrain spelt flakes and flour at 2 percent each. The apple, banana and spelt are Demeter grade, the biodynamic tier above EU Organic, and Holle declares the jar lactose free and vegan.
This is the one fruit jar in the Holle range that is not gluten free, and that is the single most important thing to know about it. Spelt is a type of wheat, which Holle states in its own footnote on the declaration, so the jar contains gluten. If your baby has not yet had a gluten-containing grain, this jar is a way of introducing one inside a familiar fruit puree rather than on its own.
The grain is there in a small quantity and in two forms: wholegrain spelt flakes at 2 percent and wholegrain spelt flour at 2 percent. Holle describes the flakes as fine, and suited to a mouth that is still sensitive. Between them they thicken the puree and give it a little body and a mild cereal note, without turning it into a porridge.
Apple is the base at 46 percent, banana follows at 12 percent, and water makes up most of the rest, with a little lemon juice concentrate last in the list. That is a more dilute recipe than Holle's fruit-only jars, which is what you would expect of a puree built to carry a grain rather than to be fruit alone. Holle states the jar is made without added sugar, footnoted to say that the ingredients contain sugar naturally.
Holle suggests it as a dessert. Because the grain is already in the jar, it is a more filling course than a plain fruit puree, which makes it useful at the end of a meal that was light, or as the sweet part of a breakfast. As a European baby food it is ready to serve rather than something you mix or dilute.

Where it fits
Where this jar sits in the weaning day
Holle places this one as a dessert, and that is where it works best. It is sweeter and more filling than a vegetable jar and more substantial than a fruit-only one, so it rounds off a meal rather than being the meal.
From the 6th month it is also a reasonable way to introduce a gluten grain. Guidance in most European countries is to bring gluten in during the weaning period rather than to delay it, and a jar with 4 percent spelt in a fruit base is a small, controlled amount inside something a baby is likely to accept. If gluten is genuinely new for your baby, treat this jar as the new food of that day and nothing else.
It is the wrong jar, though, if you are specifically avoiding gluten. Holle does not label this product gluten free, unlike the rest of its fruit jars, and the reason is the spelt. There is no version of this recipe without the grain.
If you need a gluten-free fruit jar instead
This jar contains spelt and is not declared gluten free. Holle's fruit-only jars are: Apple and Plum Puree is two fruits and nothing else, and Apple and Banana with Apricot is the same fruit base as this one without any grain in it.
Preparation
How to serve Holle Apple and Banana with Spelt
Ready as it is, with no water to add
The grain is already cooked into the puree, so there is nothing to mix, measure or dilute. Serve it at room temperature or warmed gently if your baby prefers it that way. Holle does not publish a warming temperature, a warming time or a serving quantity for this jar, so none is given here.
Holle describes the spelt flakes in it as fine, and suited to a mouth that is still sensitive, so the texture is smooth rather than flaked or lumpy.
1
Check the seal first
The lid gives an audible click on a jar that has not been opened before. If there is no click, do not use it. The best-before date is printed on the cap.
2
Spoon out a portion
Take out what you expect your baby to eat rather than feeding from the jar. Serving from the glass and returning it to the fridge puts saliva into the rest of the jar.
3
Serve cool or gently warmed
Room temperature is fine. If your baby prefers it warm, warm the portion rather than the whole jar, and warm it gently rather than boiling it.
4
Stir it through
A puree with a grain in it thickens as it stands, and warming is uneven. One stir evens out both the texture and the temperature.
5
Watch the first serving
If this is your baby's first gluten grain, give a small amount on a day when nothing else is new, so that anything you notice afterwards has only one possible cause.
6
Check, then spoon-feed
Check the temperature yourself before your baby does, and offer it from a spoon at your baby's own pace.
Holle publishes no warming temperature, no warming time, no serving quantity and no opened-jar fridge life for this product, and none is invented here. The steps above are ordinary jar handling plus Holle's own note on the fineness of the spelt flakes. The storage and handling text printed on the jar in your hand governs.
This jar contains spelt, which is a type of wheat, and therefore contains gluten. Do not give it to a baby who must avoid gluten or wheat. Always check the temperature before feeding. Store jars in a cool, dry place, and do not use a jar whose lid did not click on opening.
Nutrition
Nutritional values per 100 g
This is the nutrition declaration recorded for this jar, on a per 100 g basis. It is a low-sugar jar by the standards of a fruit puree, at 6.3 g of sugars per 100 g, which is what the water content and the grain do to a fruit base.

Holle publishes no per-serving and no per-jar panel for this product, and no per-serving figures have been calculated from the per 100 g values. The panel printed on the jar you receive is the one that governs.
Ingredients and allergens
What is in it
Contains spelt, which is a type of wheat
ALLERGY ADVICE: this jar contains SPELT, declared in capital letters in the ingredient list. Holle footnotes spelt as a type of wheat, so the jar contains gluten and is not suitable for a baby avoiding wheat or gluten. Holle does not label this product gluten free.
Holle does list it as lactose free and as suitable for vegan and vegetarian diets. There is no milk and no egg in the recipe. Read the jar before you open it, because recipes are revised and the jar in your hand governs.

Reproduced from the ingredient declaration Holle publishes for this product. Holle gives no total Demeter percentage for this recipe, so none is stated here; the apple, banana and both spelt components carry the Demeter mark and the lemon juice concentrate is certified organic.
No added sugar: Holle states the jar is made with no added sugar, footnoted to say that the ingredients contain sugar naturally. Those sugars come from the apple and the banana.
Holle publishes no country of origin for the main ingredients of this jar.
Read as a list, that is two fruits, a grain in two forms, water and a little lemon juice concentrate. The named ingredients total 62 percent, so water makes up most of the remainder. No starch, thickener, preservative or flavoring appears in the declaration.

Portions
How far a two-jar pack goes
Each jar holds 190 g net and this pack contains two of them, so you are buying 380 g of prepared puree in total. That is the whole of the arithmetic, because it is the only part of it that is published.
How many servings that is depends on your baby. Because the grain makes this jar more filling than a fruit-only puree, it tends to go further as a dessert than a plain fruit jar does. Holle prints no serving size for this jar, no number of portions and no feeding quantity, so any per-meal count here would be invented rather than read.
Appetite at six months varies more than any table could usefully capture, which is the other reason no portion count is offered. The two figures worth planning around are the ones above: 190 g a jar, two jars in the pack.
No portions-per-jar figure is stated here because none is published for this product. The 190 g net weight and the two-jar pack size are the confirmed figures.

Questions parents ask
Frequently asked questions
Is this jar gluten free?
No. It contains spelt, which Holle footnotes as a type of wheat, so the jar contains gluten. Holle does not label this product gluten free, unlike its fruit-only jars. Do not give it to a baby who must avoid wheat or gluten.
From what age can my baby have it?
From the 6th month, which is the age on this product and the age Holle publishes for it. If gluten is new for your baby, treat it as the new food of that day.
How much does one jar hold?
190 g net, and this pack contains two jars. Holle does not state how many servings a jar makes, so no portion count is given here.
What exactly is in it?
Apple at 46 percent, water, banana at 12 percent, wholegrain spelt flakes at 2 percent, wholegrain spelt flour at 2 percent, and a little lemon juice concentrate. No starch, thickener, preservative or flavoring is declared.
Why is there water in it when the fruit jars have none?
The named ingredients come to 62 percent, and water is most of the rest. A puree built to carry a grain is thinner at the fruit stage so that the flakes and flour can be cooked into it, which is why this recipe is more dilute than Holle's fruit-only jars.
Does it contain added sugar?
No sugar is added. Holle states the jar is made with no added sugar and footnotes that the ingredients contain sugar naturally. The panel shows 6.3 g of sugars per 100 g, which is lower than Holle's fruit-only jars.
What does Demeter mean on this jar?
Demeter is the certification for biodynamic farming, which is a stricter standard than organic alone. The apple, the banana and both spelt components carry it, and the lemon juice concentrate is certified organic. Holle does not publish a total Demeter percentage for this recipe.
Is the texture lumpy because of the flakes?
Holle describes the wholegrain flakes in this jar as fine, and suited to a mouth that is still sensitive. The grain thickens the puree rather than leaving pieces in it, so it is still a smooth spoon-fed puree.
Written from Holle's own published product page for Apfel and Banane mit Dinkel, which is the source of truth for this recipe and which gives the apple 46 percent, banana 12 percent, spelt wholegrain flakes 2 percent and spelt wholegrain flour 2 percent declaration with water and lemon juice concentrate, the 6-month age, the Demeter certification, the no-added-sugar statement, the footnote that spelt is a type of wheat, the lactose-free and vegan declarations, and the note that the wholegrain flakes are fine and suited to a still-sensitive mouth. Holle does not label this product gluten free and no gluten-free claim is made here. Holle's product page publishes no nutrition table, no allergen declaration, no total Demeter percentage, no country of origin and no preparation, warming or storage figures for this jar; the per 100 g panel above is the declaration already recorded for this product, and the gaps are left open rather than filled. Age and pack size are taken from the product itself. Last reviewed 19 October 2026.
Warm the whole jar or partial portion in a water bath (37 °C), stir and feed.
