What it is

HiPP Organic Baby Pasta, 320 g, from 6 months

HiPP Organic Baby Pasta is an organic baby pasta for babies from 6 months. It is a dry pasta made from organic durum wheat semolina with added vitamin B1, cut into shapes small enough for a baby to manage, and it comes in a 320 g box. You boil it for four to five minutes and serve it freshly cooked, on its own or built into a meal.

Pasta arrives at a particular point in weaning. A baby who has been taking smooth puree from a spoon eventually needs something with a shape to it, and small pasta is one of the easiest ways to get there: it is soft when cooked, it holds sauce, and it breaks up under the gums of a baby with no teeth yet. HiPP cuts this one specifically small, which is the whole reason it exists as a separate product rather than as ordinary pasta off the shelf.

The declaration is two lines long. Durum wheat semolina from organic production, and vitamin B1. The declaration names no egg, no salt, and nothing that would color or flavor it. Durum wheat is what gives small pasta enough structure to keep its shape in boiling water instead of collapsing into the pan, which matters more at this size than at any other.

Because it is wheat, it carries gluten, and the pack notes it may contain traces of soya and eggs. That puts it after the point where grains have been introduced rather than at it. A baby who has already taken wheat in a cereal and taken it well is the baby this box is for.

What it is really sold as is a base. On its own it is bland on purpose, and HiPP's own instruction is to build it out: a tomato sauce, a little meat or fish, or small vegetables stirred through. That is useful during the months when a baby is learning that a meal can have more than one thing in it, and it is why a 320 g box lasts: you are using 30 g at a time alongside whatever else is on the plate.

Where it fits

Where baby pasta sits in the weaning day

This is lunch or dinner food rather than breakfast food. It belongs in the stage where purees are giving way to meals with texture, usually somewhere after six months, and it works as the carbohydrate part of a plate rather than as the whole plate. Cooked soft and served warm, it is one of the first foods a baby can push around and pick up without it turning to liquid.

It is not a first food and it is not a cereal substitute. A cereal is milled fine and swells in liquid; pasta has to be boiled and stays a solid piece afterwards. If your baby is still at the smooth-spoon stage, a cereal is the right pack and this one can wait a few weeks. The gluten point matters too: wheat should already have been met singly in a cereal before it turns up in a shape a baby is chewing.

Where it earns its place is variety. Weaning stalls when every meal has the same consistency, and a small pasta changes the consistency without changing the flavors your baby already accepts. Stirred into a vegetable puree your baby already eats, it is the same meal with something to chew in it, which is usually an easier step than a brand new flavor.

If your baby is not on textures yet

Stay with a smooth stage for now. A single-grain cereal such as HiPP Organic 100% Rice Porridge or a vegetable jar such as HiPP Mixed Vegetable Puree is the step before pasta, and you can come back to the box in a few weeks.

Preparation

How to cook HiPP Organic Baby Pasta

Read this before the first bowl

Serve it freshly cooked and do not prepare it in advance. Check the temperature yourself before the bowl reaches your baby, because small pasta holds heat in the middle after the outside has cooled. Stay with your baby for the whole meal: a shaped food is a choking risk in a way that a puree is not.

30 g2 to 3 tbsp per serving
500 mlBoiling water
4-5 minThen drain
FreshCook each meal to order
1

Boil the water first

Bring about 500 ml of water to a rolling boil before the pasta goes in. A small pasta cooked from cold water turns gluey, because it sits in warm water releasing starch before it begins to cook.

2

Measure the pasta

Two to three tablespoons, about 30 grams, is one serving. Measure it dry and into the pan rather than guessing from the bowl, because small shapes look like far less than they are.

3

Cook for four to five minutes

Stir once as it goes in so the pieces do not settle together on the bottom, then leave it. Four to five minutes is HiPP's own time for this cut.

4

Drain it in a colander

Tip the pan into a colander rather than lifting the pasta out. Draining it properly is what keeps the finished bowl from being watery once you add anything to it.

5

Build the meal

HiPP's own suggestion is to add a tomato sauce, meat, fish or small vegetables. A vegetable puree your baby already takes is the easiest first pairing, because only the texture is new.

6

Check the temperature, then serve

Test it yourself, on the inside of a wrist rather than a fingertip. Serve it warm and freshly cooked, and do not keep a cooked portion back for later.

Always supervise your baby while eating. Shaped foods carry a choking risk. Keep your baby sitting upright and never leave them alone with a bowl. Serve freshly cooked, do not prepare the pasta in advance, and store the unopened box in a cool, dry place.
Serving it

Four ways to serve it, and when each one suits

The pasta is the constant and everything else is the variable, so the question is only what you stir through it. These are the pairings HiPP's own instruction points at, in the order they usually become appropriate.

Serve it with Why Usually from
A vegetable puree Only the texture is new, so it is the gentlest first pasta meal 6 months
Tomato sauce A stronger flavor, and it coats small shapes well From 6 months
Small soft vegetables Two textures on one plate, which is the next step up From 8 months
Meat or fish Turns it into a full main meal with a protein in it From 8 months

HiPP names tomato sauce, meat, fish and small vegetables as the additions for a complete meal. The ages beside them are the usual weaning order for those foods rather than instructions printed on this box, and your own baby's stage governs.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in it

Contains WHEAT, and therefore gluten

This pasta is made from durum wheat semolina. Wheat is a cereal containing gluten, so the pack contains gluten and no gluten-free claim is made for it. The pack also states it may contain traces of SOYA and EGGS.

Allergens: WHEAT, and therefore gluten. May contain traces of SOYA and EGGS. Reproduced from the ingredient and allergy declaration published for this box.

HiPP's German site does not publish a product page for this pasta, so no nutrition table and no organic control code is stated here. The declaration on the box you receive is the one that governs.

Read as a list, that is one grain and one vitamin. The declaration names no sugar, no salt, no egg and no oil, which is what makes it a base rather than a finished dish, and the vitamin B1 is the thiamine European rules require in a cereal product for babies. HiPP publishes no free-from claim for this box, so none is made here.

Portions

How many servings a 320 g box makes

Dry pasta has no fluid yield, so the useful figure is servings. HiPP gives one serving as two to three tablespoons, about 30 grams dry, which makes the arithmetic one division.

Box Dry per serving Arithmetic Servings
320 g, this box 30 g 320 ÷ 30 about 10

So one box is roughly ten baby meals' worth of pasta, used as the carbohydrate part of a plate rather than as the whole of it. Because it keeps dry and unopened for a long time, a single box usually outlasts the stage it was bought for. This listing is also sold as a four-box pack size for a household already using it regularly.

The serving figure is HiPP's own, as published for this box. A level tablespoon varies, so treat the serving count as a planning figure. Keep the box closed in a cool, dry place and use it by the date printed on it.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

How do I cook HiPP Organic Baby Pasta?

Put two to three tablespoons, about 30 grams, into roughly 500 ml of boiling water and cook for four to five minutes. Drain it in a colander, stir through whatever you are serving it with, and check the temperature before it reaches your baby. Serve it freshly cooked.

From what age can my baby have it?

From 6 months, which is the age on this product. It is a shaped food rather than a puree, so it suits a baby who has already started on textures and has already met wheat in a cereal.

Does it contain gluten?

Yes. It is made from durum wheat semolina, and wheat is a cereal containing gluten. We make no gluten-free claim for it.

Does it contain egg?

Egg is not an ingredient. The pack does state that it may contain traces of soya and eggs, so read the declaration on your own box if egg allergy is something your family watches for.

How many servings are in a 320 g box?

About ten, at HiPP's serving of two to three tablespoons or roughly 30 grams dry. That is the pasta alone, used as part of a plate rather than as a whole meal on its own.

Can I cook a batch and keep it?

HiPP's instruction is to serve it freshly cooked and not to prepare the pasta in advance, so cook each meal to order.

Does it need salt in the cooking water?

The declaration names no salt and the cooking instruction asks for none. Salt is generally kept out of a baby's food in the first year, so cook it in plain water.

What do I serve with it?

HiPP suggests a tomato sauce, meat, fish or small vegetables for a complete meal. A vegetable puree your baby already takes is the easiest starting point, because then only the texture is new.
