What it is

Holle Organic Honey Minis Rusks, 100 g, from 12 months

Holle Organic Honey Minis are small organic baby rusks for children from 12 months: Demeter wheat flour at 84 percent with honey at 8 percent and Demeter butter at 7 percent, plus yeast and the vitamin B1 that European law requires. A 100 g box in a mini format, and a five-item list that Holle sums up as flour, honey, butter and yeast with the right amount of vitamin B1 and nothing else.

Honey is the reason this product starts at 12 months

Honey is not given to babies under one year. That is standard infant-feeding guidance rather than a Holle statement, and it is almost certainly why Holle places these rusks at 12 months where its plain spelt rusks start at 6. Holle prints no specific honey warning on the pages we can read, so we are telling you plainly: these are a 12 months and over product, and the age is not a suggestion.

Beyond the honey, this is a simple rusk. Four of the five entries are food and the fifth is a required vitamin. The honey at 8 percent is what sweetens it and Holle describes it as extra mild, giving the rusks a slight sweetness rather than a pronounced one. The butter at 7 percent is what makes them richer than a plain rusk.

Both the wheat flour and the butter carry the Demeter mark, which is biodynamic certification and a stricter standard than the EU organic baseline. The honey and the yeast are certified organic. That means every agricultural ingredient in the box is certified to one standard or the other.

Because they contain butter these are a vegetarian rusk rather than a vegan one, and they contain milk as well as wheat and gluten. The mini format is the practical point: a smaller rusk suits a toddler's hand and a toddler's appetite better than a full-size one, and Holle positions the box for the whole family rather than only for the youngest in it.

Where it fits

Where these rusks sit in the day

Holle gives two uses: eaten as they are for a break-time snack, or used in a rusk porridge. At twelve months and over most children take them the first way, because a mini rusk is already the right size for a toddler to hold and work through without help.

As a snack they are the between-meals option that does not need a plate or a spoon. They keep dry, they survive a bag, and the mini format means a portion is a couple of rusks rather than a decision about how much of a large one to give. Holle's framing of them as being for the entire family is fair: they are a plain sweet rusk and an adult will happily eat one with coffee.

As a porridge they soften into a thick mash in warm milk, which is useful for a child who is tired or unwell and has gone off chewing for a day. Holle names that use but publishes no quantities for it, so it is a method rather than a recipe.

If your child is under 12 months

Choose a rusk without honey. Honey is not suitable for babies under a year, and that is what sets the floor on this product. Holle's Organic Spelt Baby Rusks are the alternative: 94 percent Demeter spelt, no sweetener of any kind, no dairy, and placed from 6 months.

Serving

How to serve Honey Minis

Ready to eat, with the usual rules for a firm snack

There is nothing to prepare for the snack use. A rusk is firm, so keep your child sitting upright, stay within reach, and offer a drink alongside because a rusk is dry. Holle publishes no product-specific choking warning for these, but the general rules for any firm finger food at this age apply.

From tooth 1Keep up dental care
1

Check your child is over 12 months

This is the one non-negotiable step. Honey is not given to babies under a year, and it is 8 percent of these rusks.

2

Sit your child upright

At a table or in a high chair. A firm rusk eaten while walking or lying down is the situation to avoid.

3

Offer one or two, not the box

The mini format makes portioning easy: put a couple on a plate rather than handing over the box.

4

Stay within reach

A rusk softens as it is gnawed, so a child can break off a larger piece than they meant to. Stay with them for the whole snack.

5

Or break one into warm milk

For the porridge use, crumble a rusk into a bowl, add warm milk a little at a time and let it swell to the texture your child takes. No quantities are published for this, so work by texture and check the temperature before serving.

6

Brush afterwards

These are sweetened with honey, and honey behaves on teeth much as any sugar does. Keep up a regular dental routine from the first tooth.

No portion size, piece count, porridge quantities, nutrition panel or opened-box keeping time is published for this product on any source we can read, so none appears above. What is stated is the age, the 100 g pack size, the declaration and Holle's two uses.

Not for babies under 12 months, because of the honey. Honey is not given to children under one year. These rusks are 8 percent honey and Holle places them at 12 months and over. They also contain milk, from the butter, and wheat, so they contain gluten; Holle declares possible traces of sesame, mustard, lupins and soy. Keep your child upright and supervised while they eat, and keep the box closed and dry.
Compared with the spelt rusks

Honey Minis or Spelt Baby Rusks?

Holle makes two baby rusks and they are genuinely different products rather than two sizes of the same one. The table sets both out side by side, from each product's own declaration.

Honey Minis Spelt Baby Rusks
From 12 months 6 months
Pack 100 g, mini format 200 g
Grain Demeter wheat flour 84% Demeter spelt, 94% in total
Sweetener Honey 8% None at all
Fat Demeter butter 7% Sunflower oil
Dairy Contains milk None
Diet Vegetarian Vegan
Gluten Yes, wheat Yes, spelt is a wheat grain

The short version: the spelt rusks are the plainer, earlier, dairy-free, unsweetened option, and these are the richer, sweeter, later one. Both contain gluten, so neither is an option if wheat is being avoided.

Both products carry Holle's own statement that they can be used in a rusk porridge as well as eaten as they are, and neither publishes quantities for that use.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in them

Contains wheat, gluten and milk, plus honey

Four things to know before a first rusk. These contain wheat and so contain gluten. They contain milk, from the Demeter butter. They contain honey, which is why the age floor is 12 months. And Holle declares possible traces of sesame, mustard, lupins and soy. No gluten-free or dairy-free claim is made for this product.

* from organic agriculture.
** Demeter (from biodynamic agriculture).

Allergens: contains wheat and milk. May contain traces of sesame, mustard, lupins and soy. Holle's own current product page gives the identical declaration, the identical percentages and the identical trace list, and capitalizes WHEAT flour and BUTTER as the declared allergens.

Holle labels this product vegetarian, Halal, biodynamic and organic, describes the honey as extra mild and as giving the rusks a slight sweetness, and names two uses: eaten plain as a break snack, or in a rusk porridge. Holle's own summary of the recipe is flour, honey, butter and yeast with the right amount of vitamin B1 and nothing else.

No nutrition table, no per-rusk weight, no piece count, no porridge quantities and no opened-box keeping time are published for this product on any source we can read, so none is given. Nothing has been estimated and no figures have been carried across from Holle's spelt rusks, which are a different recipe in a different pack size.

Five entries, and the three largest are the wheat flour, the honey and the butter. Together they are 99 percent of the box, leaving the yeast and the added thiamin. There is no added sugar beyond the honey, no flavoring, no coloring and no preservative in the list.

What a 100 g box gives you

The box is 100 g in Holle's mini format. What Holle does not publish is a per-rusk weight or a piece count, so the number of minis in a box is not a figure we can give you honestly.

Figure Value Where it comes from
Net weight 100 g Stated on this product, which is authoritative
In ounces about 3.5 oz Arithmetic from 100 g
Wheat flour about 84 g Arithmetic from the declared 84%
Honey about 8 g Arithmetic from the declared 8%
Butter about 7 g Arithmetic from the declared 7%
Minis per box Not published Holle gives none
Weight per mini Not published Holle gives none
Nutrition per 100 g Not published Holle gives none

The ounce conversion and the three gram figures are arithmetic from the declared percentages and the 100 g net weight, and are labeled as such. The honey figure is worth a glance: about 8 g of honey in the whole box, spread across however many rusks it makes.

No monthly usage figure is published for baby rusks. Those estimates exist for infant formula, where a child's whole intake is measurable, but a rusk is a snack offered as often or as rarely as you choose. We have not invented one.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

From what age can my child have these?

From 12 months, which is the age on this product and the age Holle gives on its own page. The honey is why: honey is not given to babies under one year.

Can I give them to a baby under a year?

No. Honey is 8 percent of these rusks, and honey is not suitable for children under 12 months. If you want a rusk for a younger baby, Holle's Organic Spelt Baby Rusks contain no sweetener at all and are placed from 6 months.

Do they contain dairy?

Yes. Demeter butter is 7 percent of the recipe, so they contain milk. Holle labels them vegetarian rather than vegan.

Are they gluten-free?

No. Wheat flour is 84 percent of the recipe, so they contain wheat and gluten. We make no gluten-free claim for them.

How sweet are they?

Mildly. Honey is the only sweetener and it is 8 percent of the recipe, which works out to roughly 8 g of honey in the whole box. Holle describes the honey as extra mild and as giving the rusks a slight sweetness.

What does Demeter mean on this box?

Demeter is biodynamic certification, a stricter standard than the EU organic baseline. The wheat flour and the butter both carry it, marked with a double asterisk. The honey and the yeast are marked as organic.

Can I make a porridge with them?

Yes. Holle names rusk porridge as one of two uses for these minis. Crumble a rusk into a bowl, add warm milk gradually and let it swell. No quantities are published for that use, so work by texture.

How many rusks are in a box?

Holle publishes the 100 g net weight but no piece count and no per-rusk weight, so we cannot tell you. Counting your own box is the only reliable answer.

Is there a nutrition table?

Not one we can source. Holle publishes no nutrition panel for these rusks on its own site or through an authorized retailer, so this page gives none rather than estimating figures or borrowing them from the spelt rusks.

Can the whole family eat them?

Holle positions the box for the entire family and describes the minis as a snack for between meals or break time. The 12-month age is a floor, not a ceiling.

Written from this box's own ingredient declaration, which is the source of the wheat flour at 84 percent, the honey at 8 percent, the butter at 7 percent, the yeast and the added thiamin, the organic and Demeter footnotes, the trace allergen list naming sesame, mustard, lupins and soy, the 100 g pack size, Holle's description of the honey as extra mild and as giving the rusks a slight sweetness, Holle's summary of the recipe as flour, honey, butter and yeast with the right amount of vitamin B1 and nothing else, the mini format, and the positioning of the box for the whole family. The age of 12 months and over and the 100 g net weight are taken from the product itself and are authoritative. Holle's own current product page for Organic Honey Minis Baby Rusks gives the identical declaration, percentages and trace list, capitalizes WHEAT flour and BUTTER as the declared allergens, confirms the age as from 12 months, labels the product vegetarian, Halal, biodynamic and organic, and names the two uses as eaten plain as a break snack or in a rusk porridge. The statement that honey is not given to babies under one year is general infant-feeding guidance rather than a Holle statement, and is labeled as such on the page: Holle prints no honey-specific warning on any source we can read, but places the product at 12 months. It is stated prominently because it is the reason for the age floor and because leaving it out would be worse for a parent than including it. The ounce conversion and the per-box weights of about 84 g wheat flour, 8 g honey and 7 g butter are arithmetic from the declared percentages and the net weight, and are labeled as arithmetic. The comparison with Holle's Organic Spelt Baby Rusks uses that product's own declaration and no figure has been carried between the two. Holle publishes no nutrition table, no per-rusk weight, no piece count, no porridge quantities and no opened-box keeping time for this product, so none is given and nothing has been estimated. Holle's own best-ingredients wording and a finest-butter claim previously carried for this product are not reproduced, because superlatives are not used in this store's product copy.
