What is HiPP Stage 1 UK Organic Combiotic?
HiPP Stage 1 UK is a UK-market organic first infant milk for babies from birth to around 6 months, made from organic skimmed milk and organic whey with organic lactose as the only carbohydrate and no starch. This listing is a single 800 g tin — about 205 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 41 five-ounce bottles.
HiPP is a family business founded in Pfaffenhofen, Germany in 1899 and now in its fourth generation. It converted its farms to organic growing in 1956, decades before organic became a marketing category, and that history is the real substance behind the EU Organic mark on this tin. The UK range is HiPP's dedicated British-market formulation, made to UK and EU infant formula rules and sold through hipp.co.uk and UK retail — not a relabelled German import.
That distinction matters more than it sounds, and it is the one thing we want you to read before you buy. HiPP UK Organic Combiotic is not the same recipe as German HiPP Bio Combiotik. The UK tin carries GOS prebiotics only. It does not contain the L. fermentum hereditum live culture that the German tins carry, and it uses folic acid rather than HiPP's Metafolin bioactive folate. If a live culture is what drew you to the Combiotic name, the German tin is the one you want, and we stock it.
What the UK tin has that the German Stage 1 does not is a genuinely starch-free carbohydrate base: organic lactose and nothing else, where German HiPP Stage 1 includes organic starch. It does contain palm oil, which is standard and compliant across EU organic baby formula but is not something every brand uses — we would rather you knew that from us than found it on the label at home.
What's in HiPP Stage 1 UK per 100ml?
Prepared as directed, every 100 ml of HiPP Stage 1 UK provides 66 kcal, 3.6 g fat, 1.28 g protein and 7.0 g carbohydrate. The carbohydrate is organic lactose with no added starch, the prebiotic is organic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), the DHA comes from fish oil, and there is no live culture in this UK formulation.

HiPP does not publish a per-100 ml calcium, iron or DHA figure for this UK tin in the sources we checked, so we have not printed one. The full declaration is on the tin.
What is not in HiPP Stage 1 UK?
No starch, no maltodextrin and no added refined sugar — the carbohydrate is organic lactose, the same sugar found in breast milk. Being equally plain about the other side: this tin contains palm oil and it contains fish oil, so it is not suitable for a vegetarian diet, and it carries no live culture.
- No starch
- No maltodextrin
- No added refined sugar
- Lactose-only carbohydrate
- EU Organic certified
- Non-GMO by organic standard
How does HiPP Stage 1 UK compare to HiPP Stage 1 German and Kendamil Organic Stage 1?
All three are organic-certified first infant milks for birth to 6 months. HiPP Stage 1 UK is the starch-free, lactose-only one; HiPP Stage 1 German is the one with the live L. fermentum hereditum culture and Metafolin folate; Kendamil Organic Stage 1 is the whole-milk, palm-oil-free one with vegetarian DHA from microalgae.

Being straight with you: if the live-culture Combiotic system is what brought you to HiPP, buy the German tin. HiPP Stage 1 Bio Combiotik carries L. fermentum hereditum and Metafolin folate, and this UK tin carries neither despite the near-identical name — that is a real formulation gap, not marketing wording. Note the German tin is 600 g against this one's 800 g, so compare prepared fluid ounces rather than shelf price before you decide which is dearer. And if palm oil is your sticking point, Kendamil Organic Stage 1 is the cleaner label of the three: a whole-milk base rather than skimmed-and-rebuilt, no palm oil, and vegetarian DHA from microalgae instead of fish. Where HiPP Stage 1 UK genuinely wins is the combination of EU Organic certification with a starch-free, lactose-only carbohydrate — the German Stage 1 contains organic starch and this one does not.
How many tins of formula will my baby need per month?
One 800 g tin of HiPP Stage 1 UK makes about 205 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 41 five-ounce bottles. An exclusively formula-fed baby in the first six months typically uses about 4 tins a month, though the real figure depends almost entirely on how much your baby drinks per day.
The bars below convert daily intake into tins, using this tin's own yield. A newborn in the first weeks drinks far less than a five-month-old, so most families start near the bottom of this range and work up. If you are stocking ahead, buying to the upper figure is the safer error.
Estimates for exclusive formula feeding, calculated from this tin's stated yield. Every baby feeds differently — use these for planning, not as a target.
How do you prepare HiPP Stage 1 UK?
Boil fresh water and let it cool for no more than 30 minutes so it is still at least 70 °C, pour the measured water into a sterilised bottle first, add the number of level 4.3 g scoops the tin's feeding chart gives for your baby's age, shake until dissolved, cool to body temperature and feed straight away.
Sterilise first
Sterilise the bottle, teat, cap and scoop before every feed, and wash your hands.
Boil and cool
Boil fresh drinking water and let it stand no more than 30 minutes, so it is still at least 70 °C when it meets the powder.
Water into the bottle first
Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.
Add level scoops
Add the number of level 4.3 g scoops the tin's feeding chart gives for your baby's age, levelling each one against the edge of the tin.
Cap and shake
Cap the bottle and shake until no powder is left clinging to the sides.
Cool, test, feed
Cool under running water to body temperature, test a drop on the inside of your wrist, and feed straight away.
A note on water temperature. HiPP specifies water at 70 °C or hotter, which matches NHS and WHO guidance for powdered formula — powder is not sterile, and that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. Let the bottle cool to body temperature before feeding, and always test a drop on the inside of your wrist first.

Store tins in a cool, dry place. Once opened, use the powder within 21 days. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.
Packaging & tins
This is the UK-market tin, labelled in English to UK and EU infant formula rules, and it holds 800 g. HiPP's German tins hold 600 g and are a different recipe. If you are price-comparing across HiPP's markets, compare prepared fluid ounces rather than the price on the tin.
HiPP Stage 1 UK: frequently asked questions
Is HiPP UK Stage 1 the same formula as German HiPP Stage 1?
No. Despite both carrying the Combiotic name, they are genuinely different formulations. The UK Organic Combiotic tin contains galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) prebiotics only, with no L. fermentum hereditum live culture, and it uses folic acid where the German tin uses Metafolin bioactive folate. The UK tin is also fully starch-free, where German HiPP Stage 1 includes organic starch, and it is 800 g against the German tin's 600 g. If you want the live culture, buy the German tin.
Does HiPP Stage 1 UK contain probiotics?
It does not. This is the most common misunderstanding about the UK range, because the word Combiotic normally signals a prebiotic-plus-probiotic pairing in HiPP's German products. In the UK formulation, Combiotic refers to the GOS prebiotic fibre alone. GOS is a genuine ingredient with a real role in supporting gut flora, but it is not a live culture and we will not describe it as one.
Can I use HiPP Stage 1 UK from birth?
Yes. It is a first infant milk, formulated for babies from birth through to around 6 months, and it can be used as your baby's only source of nutrition through that period or as a supplement alongside breastfeeding. There is no need to move to Stage 2 at any fixed point before 6 months — Stage 1 covers the whole first half of the first year.
How many bottles does one 800 g tin make?
About 205 fl oz of prepared formula per tin, which works out at roughly 41 bottles of 5 fl oz. The tin holds approximately 186 level scoops at 4.3 g each. Actual bottles will vary with your baby's feed size, so treat 41 as a planning figure rather than a guarantee.
Does HiPP Stage 1 UK contain palm oil?
Yes. The organic vegetable oil blend is palm, rapeseed and sunflower oil. Palm oil is a common and fully compliant fat source in EU infant formula, used to bring the fatty acid profile closer to breast milk, but it is not universal — Kendamil's organic range, for example, is made without it. If avoiding palm oil is a priority for you, that is the more relevant tin.
When should I move to HiPP Stage 2?
Around 6 months, usually at the same point your baby starts solid food. Stage 2 follow-on milk is adjusted for a baby who is now getting some calories from food, with more iron and calcium to match the mineral needs of the second half of the first year. There is no cliff edge at six months exactly — many families make the change over a week or two, mixing the transition gradually.
Can I combine HiPP Stage 1 UK with breastfeeding?
Yes. Combination feeding is common and this formula can be used alongside breastfeeding rather than replacing it. Breastfeeding is recommended where it is possible for you, and a first infant milk is designed to complement it as well as to substitute for it. If you are working out how to balance the two, your health visitor or midwife can help you plan it around your baby's pattern.
