What is HiPP Stage 2 UK Organic Combiotic?

HiPP Stage 2 UK is a UK-market organic follow-on milk for babies 6 to 12 months, made from organic skimmed milk and organic whey with organic lactose as the carbohydrate and no starch. This listing is a single 800 g tin — about 200 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 40 five-ounce bottles.

A follow-on formula is not simply more of the same milk in a different tin. At six months your baby starts taking calories from food, and the mineral demands change with it. This tin is built for that shift: around 70–77 mg calcium and about 1.0 mg iron per 100 ml, raised against a first infant milk, plus 13.6 mg DHA, so the milk keeps supplying what a mixed diet of purées and finger food does not yet reliably cover.

Before you buy, one thing worth being precise about, because the name invites confusion. HiPP UK Organic Combiotic is not the same recipe as German HiPP Bio Combiotik. The UK tin carries GOS prebiotics only. It does not contain the L. fermentum hereditum live culture the German tins carry, and it uses folic acid rather than HiPP's Metafolin bioactive folate. Combiotic on a UK label means the prebiotic fibre, not a live culture, and we will not pretend otherwise.

What the UK tin does have is an unusually short carbohydrate list for a stage 2: organic lactose with no starch at all, where German HiPP Stage 2 uses starch to make the feed thicker and more filling. It is also free of soy, peanuts, added refined sugar, synthetic preservatives, gluten and egg. It does contain palm oil and fish oil — standard across most European baby formula, but worth knowing from us rather than from the label at home.

Comparison

How does HiPP Stage 2 UK compare to HiPP Stage 2 German and Kendamil Organic Stage 2?

All three are organic-certified follow-on milks for 6 to 12 months. HiPP Stage 2 UK is the starch-free one with the highest calcium of the three; HiPP Stage 2 German is the one with the live L. fermentum hereditum culture; Kendamil Organic Stage 2 is the whole-milk, palm-oil-free one with the most DHA and vegetarian microalgae sourcing.

Being straight with you: if you came to HiPP for the live-culture Combiotic system, the German tin is the one that has it. HiPP Stage 2 Bio Combiotik carries L. fermentum hereditum; this UK tin does not, despite the nearly identical name. The German tin is 600 g against this one's 800 g, so compare prepared fluid ounces rather than the price on the tin. If palm oil or fish oil is your sticking point, Kendamil Organic Stage 2 is the cleaner label: whole-milk base, no palm oil, no fish oil, and more DHA from microalgae — though it carries noticeably less calcium at 46 mg per 100 ml, and its marketing mentions HMOs while its published ingredient panel lists GOS only, so read that claim carefully. Where HiPP Stage 2 UK wins is the combination of EU Organic certification, the higher calcium figure, and a starch-free lactose-only carbohydrate that the German Stage 2 does not offer.

Planning ahead

How many tins of formula will my baby need per month?

One 800 g tin of HiPP Stage 2 UK makes about 200 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 40 five-ounce bottles. A baby of 6 to 12 months who is also eating solids typically uses around 3 tins a month — fewer than at Stage 1, because food now supplies part of the calories.

The bars below convert daily milk intake into tins, using this tin's own yield. Milk intake usually falls across this stage as meals grow, so a seven-month-old and an eleven-month-old on the same formula can land a full tin a month apart.

Estimates for a baby on formula alongside solids, calculated from this tin's stated yield. Every baby feeds differently — use these for planning, not as a target.

Preparation

How do you prepare HiPP Stage 2 UK?

Boil fresh water and let it cool for no more than 30 minutes so it is still at least 70 °C, pour the measured water into a sterilised bottle first, add the number of level 4.5 g scoops the tin's feeding chart gives for your baby's age, shake until dissolved, cool to body temperature and feed straight away.

1

Sterilise first

Sterilise the bottle, teat, cap and scoop before every feed, and wash your hands.

2

Boil and cool

Boil fresh drinking water and let it stand no more than 30 minutes, so it is still at least 70 °C when it meets the powder.

3

Water into the bottle first

Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.

4

Add level scoops

Add the number of level 4.5 g scoops the tin's feeding chart gives for your baby's age, levelling each one against the edge of the tin.

5

Cap and shake

Cap the bottle and shake until no powder is left clinging to the sides.

6

Cool, test, feed

Cool under running water to body temperature, test a drop on the inside of your wrist, and feed straight away.

Never use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled more than once. Make up a fresh bottle for every feed, never batch-prepare or store made-up bottles for later, never reheat, never microwave, and throw away anything your baby does not finish.

A note on water temperature. HiPP specifies water at 70 °C or hotter, which matches NHS and WHO guidance for powdered formula — powder is not sterile, and that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. Let the bottle cool to body temperature before feeding, and always test a drop on the inside of your wrist first.

Please read before buying

HiPP Stage 2 UK is a follow-on milk for babies over 6 months, to be used as part of a mixed diet that already includes solid food — it is not suitable as the sole source of nutrition for a baby under 6 months. It contains milk and it contains fish. It is not suitable for babies with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.

Store tins in a cool, dry place. Once opened, use the powder within 21 days. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.

Packaging & tins

This is the UK-market tin, labelled in English to UK and EU infant formula rules, and it holds 800 g. HiPP's German Stage 2 tin holds 600 g and is a different recipe. If you are price-comparing across HiPP's markets, compare prepared fluid ounces rather than the price on the tin.

Questions parents ask

HiPP Stage 2 UK: frequently asked questions

Is HiPP UK Stage 2 the same formula as German HiPP Stage 2?

No. They share the Combiotic name but are genuinely different recipes. The UK Organic Combiotic tin contains galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) prebiotics only, with no L. fermentum hereditum live culture, and it uses folic acid where the German tin uses Metafolin bioactive folate. The UK tin is also fully starch-free where the German Stage 2 contains starch, and it is 800 g against the German tin's 600 g.

Does HiPP Stage 2 UK contain probiotics?

It does not. This is the single most common misunderstanding about HiPP's UK range, because Combiotic signals a prebiotic-and-probiotic pairing in HiPP's German products. In the UK formulation, Combiotic refers to the GOS prebiotic fibre alone. GOS has a genuine role in supporting gut flora, but it is not a live bacterial culture and we will not describe it as one.

When should I move my baby from Stage 1 to Stage 2?

Around 6 months, usually at the point solid food is properly under way. Follow-on milk is adjusted for a baby now getting some calories from food, with more iron and calcium than a first infant milk. There is no need to switch on a particular day — most families change over a week or two. A baby who is happy and growing well on Stage 1 can stay on it a little longer without harm.

How many bottles does one 800 g tin make?

About 200 fl oz of prepared formula per tin, which works out at roughly 40 bottles of 5 fl oz. The tin holds approximately 178 level scoops at 4.5 g each. Feed sizes at this age vary widely as solids take over part of the diet, so treat 40 bottles as a planning figure rather than a guarantee.

Does HiPP Stage 2 UK contain starch or soy?

Neither. The only carbohydrate is organic lactose — no starch, and no maltodextrin. It is also free of soy, peanuts, added refined sugar and synthetic preservatives, and it is gluten-free and egg-free. It does contain palm oil in the organic vegetable oil blend, and it contains fish oil as the DHA source, so it is not suitable for a vegetarian diet.

What comes after HiPP Stage 2 UK?

At around 12 months most families move to a toddler or growing-up milk, or to ordinary cow's milk alongside a varied diet. HiPP's toddler options include the 3 Junior Combiotic Kindermilch from 12 months and the Kindermilch 1+ tin. Those are milk drinks to sit alongside meals rather than formulas, and they carry less protein than cow's milk with added iron, calcium and vitamin D.

Can I keep breastfeeding while using HiPP Stage 2 UK?

Yes. Follow-on milk is designed to sit alongside breastfeeding and solid food rather than to replace breastfeeding, and combination feeding through the second half of the first year is entirely common. Breastfeeding remains recommended for as long as it works for you. Your health visitor can help you work out how many milk feeds your baby still needs once meals are established.
