Aptamil AR is a thickened European anti-reflux baby formula for infants from birth who bring up milk frequently. The ingredient deck is built on a dairy blend of lactose, vegetable oils (palm, coconut, rapeseed, sunflower and high oleic sunflower), skimmed milk and two whey fractions, followed by galacto-oligosaccharides, the carob bean gum thickener, whey protein, fructo-oligosaccharides, oil from Mortierella alpina for ARA, and the full vitamin and mineral spread. Declared allergens are milk, fish and soy — the soy comes from the lecithin emulsifier.
One correction worth making plainly: this is not a reduced-lactose formula. The published panel shows 7.0 g of lactose in 7.3 g of total carbohydrate, so lactose is essentially the whole carbohydrate load. Anti-reflux works here through thickening, not through removing lactose. If lactose is the problem your doctor has identified, AR is not the answer.
How does a thickened anti-reflux formula work?
Aptamil AR contains locust bean gum, a fibre milled from carob seeds. Once it has been mixed and allowed to stand, the gum swells and raises the viscosity of the feed — a heavier, thicker liquid is simply harder to bring back up than thin milk.
That is the whole mechanism, and it explains two things parents often find surprising. The first is the five-minute standing time after mixing: the gum needs those minutes to swell. Feeding immediately gives your baby thin formula and largely defeats the point of buying it. The second is the teat — a thickened feed will not flow through a standard slow-flow hole, so Aptamil specifies a fast-flow, single-hole teat.

Cool boiled water to about 40°C, pour two-thirds of the measured water into a sterilised bottle, add the exact number of level scoops, shake vigorously for 10 seconds, add the remaining water and shake again, then let the bottle stand for 5 minutes so the gum thickens, shake briefly, check the temperature and feed through a fast-flow single-hole teat.
