Good to Know About the Age on Your Box

You may receive this porridge in one of two boxes, and both hold exactly the same product. The German-market box prints a 5-month age, because German labelling rules do not allow a 4-month age indication on baby cereals. The English export box prints a 4-month age. The recipe, the ingredients and the nutrition are identical in both versions — only the number printed on the front differs, to match each market’s rules. Whichever box arrives, you have the right product, and it is suitable from 4 months.

What it is

HiPP Organic 100% Oats Porridge, 200 g, from 4 months

HiPP Organic 100% Oats Porridge is a single-grain organic baby cereal for babies from 4 months. The dry mix is 100% organic wholemeal oat flour with added vitamin B1 and nothing else, and it carries no added sugar. It comes as a powder in a 200 g box. It contains gluten from oats, which is the reason it is usually the second grain a baby meets rather than the first.

A box with one grain in it is the only kind that tells you anything. Introduce a mixed cereal and a reaction leaves you guessing between four grains; introduce oat baby cereal on its own and you know what your baby has had. That is the whole case for a single-grain box, and it is why HiPP makes two of them.

Oats are the gentler of the gluten grains and the one usually brought in first. HiPP uses the wholemeal flour rather than a refined one, so the fiber and the nutrients that sit in the outer layers of the grain stay in the box. The flour is processed so the starch is already broken down, which is why the porridge thickens without cooking and why it suits a maturing digestion.

The one addition is vitamin B1, the thiamine European rules require in a baby cereal. HiPP states that vitamin B1 matters for carbohydrate and energy metabolism and for the nervous system. HiPP describes this porridge as unsweetened and says the addition of sugar is avoided, so what satisfies a baby here is the grain itself.

There is no milk powder in the box, so the liquid is yours to choose and the nutrition in the bowl is whatever that liquid brings. HiPP's own preparation for this box is with prepared infant milk, at approximately 200 ml to 3 to 4 tablespoons of porridge. As a European baby cereal it is the plain box you keep for the mornings when you do not want a flavor in the bowl.

Where it fits

Where this one sits in the weaning day

This is the box that brings gluten into the diet, and that is worth knowing before you open it rather than after. Oats carry gluten. HiPP declares it on the pack, and this listing declares it too. A single-grain oat cereal is the usual way to do that, because it brings one gluten grain and not four.

The order most parents follow is a gluten-free single grain first, then oats, then blends. HiPP's Organic 100% Rice Grain Porridge, 200 g is the gluten-free single grain in the same range and the same 200 g box, which makes the two of them a natural pair to start on.

Later, a plain oat box keeps being useful. It is the neutral base you stir a fruit or a vegetable puree into, and it is the one to go back to if a mixed cereal has not agreed with your baby and you want to strip the meal back to one ingredient and work forward again.

If gluten has not been introduced yet

Start with the rice box and come back to this one. A gluten-free single grain lets you establish that cereal itself is fine before gluten is part of the question. Once oats have been met on their own, a blend such as HiPP's Organic 100% Multigrain Cereal is the straightforward next step.

Preparation

How to prepare HiPP 100% Oats Porridge

Read this before the first bowl

Follow HiPP's preparation and dosage instructions, because the figures on the box are built on them. Let the liquid cool to approximately 50 degrees Celsius before it meets the powder, since liquid that is too hot makes the flour harder to dissolve rather than easier. Make every bowl fresh, always spoon-feed it, and never heat the prepared porridge in a microwave, which HiPP warns carries a risk of scalding.

50 °CCool the liquid to this
22 g3 to 4 tbsp of porridge
200 mlPrepared infant milk
1 bowlMade fresh each time
1

Boil the water

Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to approximately 50 degrees Celsius. HiPP is explicit that liquid which is too hot works against solubility rather than for it.

2

Prepare the milk feed

Make up approximately 200 ml of your usual infant milk, which HiPP gives as the preparation for this box. HiPP names its own stage 2 follow-on milk as the example.

3

Measure the porridge

Put 3 to 4 level tablespoons, 22 grams, of oat porridge onto a plate or into a bowl before any liquid goes in. Measuring the dry powder first is what keeps the quantity right.

4

Pour the milk onto the powder

Add the prepared milk feed to the porridge powder rather than the other way round, and stir it through. That is the order HiPP writes and it lumps less.

5

Let it swell

Leave it standing until it reaches the consistency you want. Oat flour takes the liquid up as it sits, so a looser bowl means serving sooner and a thicker one means waiting a little longer.

6

Check the temperature, then spoon-feed

Check the temperature yourself before the bowl reaches your baby. Spoon-feed the porridge and make each meal fresh rather than keeping a prepared bowl back for later.

HiPP's own quantities for this box

Prepared with Liquid Liquid Porridge Also add
Infant formula Prepared infant milk, cooled to approx. 50 °C approx. 200 ml 3-4 tbsp (22 g) Nothing

This is the only preparation published for this box on this listing, so it is the only one given here. HiPP's other cereal boxes carry a half-milk route and a milk-free fruit route with their own gram and millilitre quantities, and those numbers belong to those boxes rather than to this one. If you want to make this porridge up some other way, follow what is printed on the box you have.

HiPP adds one note that reads oddly out of context: where cow's milk is used in a baby's cooked food, HiPP advises adding water as well, because the water brings the protein content of the milk down to a level suitable for a child. It is a general weaning note rather than part of this box's formula-based preparation.

Do not use a microwave. HiPP states a scalding risk. Check the box and inner bag are intact before first use, close the pack after every use, keep it dry at room temperature, and use the contents within 3 to 4 weeks of opening.
Oats or rice

Oats or rice: which single grain first?

HiPP makes both in the same 200 g box, at the same age, with the same two-line ingredient list. The only material difference between them is gluten, and that is what decides the order.

Box Grain Gluten Porridge per bowl Portions per box
100% Oats, this one Wholemeal oat flour Contains gluten 22 g about 9
100% Rice Rice flour Declared gluten free 20 g about 10

Both figures are HiPP's own gram weights for each box, divided by the 200 g pack size. The rice box is the one to start on if gluten has not been introduced yet. Beyond gluten the two are close enough that the choice can come down to which grain your family already eats.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in it

Contains gluten from oats

Contains cereals containing gluten. Contains OATS. May contain traces of mustard. No gluten-free claim is made for this product and none should be read into it. Read the allergen panel printed on your own box before preparing a feed.

On the label

Ingredients and more

100% wholemeal oat flour*, vitamin B1.

* from organic production.

Allergens: OATS, and therefore gluten. May contain traces of mustard. Reproduced from the ingredient and allergen declaration this listing publishes for this box. The panel printed on the box you receive is the one that governs.

No added sugar: HiPP describes this porridge as unsweetened and states that the addition of sugar is avoided. Oat flour contains carbohydrate naturally, which is a different thing from sugar having been put in.

Read as a list, that is one organic wholegrain and one vitamin. There is nothing added to sweeten, color, flavor or preserve it, and no milk ingredient is declared.

  • 100% organic wholemeal oat flour

  • No added sugar

Portions

How many bowls a 200 g box makes

A dry cereal has no fluid yield, so the number worth having is the bowl count. HiPP gives one gram weight for this box, which makes the arithmetic a single division.

Preparation Porridge per bowl Arithmetic Bowls per box
With prepared infant milk, HiPP's own route 22 g 200 ÷ 22 about 9

So a 200 g box is roughly nine bowls at HiPP's own quantity. At one cereal meal a day that is a little over a week from a box, which is why parents who have settled on it tend to buy two at a time.

The figure is calculated from the 22 g HiPP prints for this preparation and the 200 g pack size, and the arithmetic is shown so you can check it. A level tablespoon varies between hands, so treat the bowl count as a planning figure rather than a promise. No bowl count is given for any other preparation, because no other quantity is published for this box.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

How do I prepare HiPP 100% Oats Porridge?

Boil fresh water and let it cool to about 50 degrees Celsius, make up approximately 200 ml of your usual infant milk, and stir it into 3 to 4 tablespoons, 22 g, of porridge. Let it swell to the consistency you want, check the temperature, and spoon-feed it. Do not use a microwave.

From what age can my baby have it?

From 4 months, which is the age on this product. It is a single-grain cereal with no milk ingredient, which is why it is one of the boxes that can come this early.

Is it gluten free?

No. It is made from wholemeal oat flour, and oats are a cereal containing gluten. The pack declares it and we make no gluten-free claim for this box. HiPP's 100% rice porridge is the gluten-free single grain in the same range.

Does it contain milk powder?

No milk ingredient is declared for this box. The dairy in the bowl, if any, is the liquid you make it up with.

Can I prepare it with water instead of milk?

This listing publishes only the prepared-infant-milk route for this box, so that is the only one stated here. Follow whatever preparation is printed on the box you receive rather than borrowing quantities from a different HiPP cereal.

How many portions does a 200 g box make?

About nine, at HiPP's own 22 g of porridge a bowl. The arithmetic is 200 divided by 22 and it is shown in the portions table on this page.

Does it contain added sugar?

No sugar is added. HiPP describes this porridge as unsweetened and states that the addition of sugar is avoided. The carbohydrate in the bowl comes from the oats.

Why does my box say 5 months when this page says 4?

Both boxes hold the same product. German labelling rules do not permit a 4-month age indication on baby cereals, so the German box prints 5 months where the English export box prints 4. The recipe, the ingredients and the nutrition are identical and only the printed number differs.
