What it is

HiPP Organic 100% Multigrain Cereal, from the 6th month

HiPP Organic 100% Multigrain Cereal is a milk-free organic baby cereal for babies from the 6th month. The box is grain and nothing else: 80 percent whole grain flour from oat, wheat, barley, spelt and rye, with 20 percent wheat semolina and added vitamin B1. It carries no added sugar, and it contains gluten from every one of its grains.

The name is literal. Where many cereals are a grain base carrying fruit powder or milk powder, this one is 100 percent cereal: five wholegrains at 80 percent of the box, wheat semolina at 20 percent, and the thiamine European rules require. That is why it is the plainest of the multigrain baby cereals and the most flexible.

Five wholegrains in one box is also the reason it is a 6-month product rather than a 4-month one. Oat, wheat, barley, spelt and rye all carry gluten, and so does the wheat semolina, so this is six gluten-bearing cereal components arriving together. It is a box for a baby who has already met gluten, not the one to introduce it with.

What the blend buys you is texture and taste. Wheat semolina gives a smoother, more familiar porridge body than flakes alone, and five wholegrains give a fuller flavor than any single grain does. HiPP states that the box contains natural sugars and that no sugar is added, so what sweetness there is comes from the grain.

Because there is no milk in it, the liquid is yours and the nutrition in the bowl follows from it. HiPP publishes three preparations: with about 200 ml of your usual infant milk, with 100 ml of milk and 100 ml of water, or milk-free with water, fruit puree and a teaspoon of rapeseed oil. As a European baby cereal it is the everyday box rather than a specialist one.

Where it fits

Where this one sits in the weaning day

This is a consolidating box rather than an introducing one. By the 6th month most babies who are eating cereal have met two or three grains singly, and a five-grain blend is the point at which you stop rotating boxes and keep one in the cupboard.

What it cannot do is tell you anything. Six gluten-bearing components on one spoon means that if a bowl disagrees with your baby you have no way of knowing which grain was responsible. Introduce oats and wheat on their own first, a few days apart, and keep this box for after that.

It is also the box to use when you want the cereal to carry something else. Milk-free flakes will take a formula your baby is already on, or make up with water and a fruit puree for a dairy-free bowl. A milk cereal with the powder built into it can do neither.

If gluten has not been introduced yet

Do not start here. HiPP's Organic 100% Oats Porridge, 200 g brings one gluten grain on its own, which is the usual way, and Organic 100% Rice Grain Porridge, 200 g is the gluten-free single grain to establish cereal itself with first.

Preparation

How to prepare HiPP 100% Multigrain Cereal

The rules that apply to all three preparations

Let the liquid cool to approximately 50 degrees Celsius before it meets the flakes. HiPP is explicit that water which is too hot dissolves the powder less well rather than better. Make every bowl fresh, always spoon-feed it, check the temperature yourself before your baby does, and do not heat a prepared porridge in a microwave.

50 °CCool the liquid to this
22 g3 to 4 tbsp, milk routes
11 g2 heaped tbsp, fruit route
200 mlLiquid, formula route
1

Boil, then cool

Boil the water, or the milk and water together on the half-milk route, and let it come down to approximately 50 degrees Celsius before you use it.

2

Measure the flakes into the bowl

3 to 4 tablespoons, 22 grams, for either milk route. 2 heaped tablespoons, 11 grams, for the milk-free fruit route. The flakes go in before the liquid does.

3

Pour the liquid onto the flakes

Add the prepared milk, or the cooled water, onto the flakes and mix it through. That is the order HiPP writes for all three preparations.

4

Let it swell

Leave the porridge standing until it reaches the consistency you want. Semolina thickens more than flakes alone, so this one firms up noticeably as it sits.

5

On the fruit route, add puree and oil

The milk-free preparation takes about 100 g of fruit puree and one teaspoon of HiPP Organic Rapeseed Oil stirred in. Neither milk route calls for oil.

6

Check the temperature, then spoon-feed

Check the bowl yourself before it reaches your baby. Spoon-feed the porridge and make each meal fresh rather than keeping a prepared bowl for later.

The three preparations, with HiPP's own quantities

Prepared with Liquid Liquid Flakes Also add
Infant formula Your usual milk mixture, made up and cooled to approx. 50 °C approx. 200 ml 3-4 tbsp (22 g) Nothing
Half milk and water 100 ml milk with 100 ml water, boiled then cooled to approx. 50 °C 200 ml total 3-4 tbsp (22 g) Nothing
Milk-free, with fruit Water, boiled then cooled to approx. 50 °C 100 ml 2 heaped tbsp (11 g) approx. 100 g fruit puree, 1 tsp oil

Quantities are HiPP's own for this box, and this cereal is one of the few that publishes a gram weight for the fruit route as well as for the milk ones. Tablespoon measures are a guide to the gram weights beside them rather than a substitute for them.

Do not use a microwave. Close the pack after every use, keep it dry at room temperature, and use the contents within 3 to 4 weeks of opening. Check the pack is intact before you open it the first time.
The grains

What is in the 100 percent, and why all of it carries gluten

Two entries make up the whole box. The first is a blend of five wholegrain flours, the second is wheat semolina, and every one of the six carries gluten.

Component Share of the box Gluten What it brings
Whole grain flour blend 80% All five carry gluten Oat, wheat, barley, spelt and rye, used wholegrain rather than refined
Wheat semolina 20% Contains gluten A smoother porridge body than flakes give on their own
Vitamin B1 added None Thiamine mononitrate, which HiPP adds as the rules require

Percentages are HiPP's own, as this listing publishes them, and the two components total 100 percent. HiPP's own statement for the vitamin B1 is that it helps maintain the normal functioning of the nervous system. No other nutrient function statement is made for this box, and no nutrition table with amounts is published for it here, so none is reproduced.

HiPP notes that this product comes in either English or German packaging and that both boxes hold exactly the same product with the same ingredients. Whichever arrives, the recipe is the one described on this page.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in it

Contains gluten, from all six cereal components

Contains cereals containing gluten. Contains OATS, WHEAT, BARLEY, SPELT and RYE. May contain traces of mustard. No gluten-free claim is made for this product and none should be read into it. No milk ingredient is declared. Read the allergen panel printed on your own box before preparing a feed.

Ingredients and more

80% whole grain flour (OAT*, WHEAT*, BARLEY*, SPELT*, RYE*), 20% WHEAT semolina*, thiamine mononitrate.

* from organic farms.

Allergens: OATS, WHEAT, BARLEY, SPELT, RYE, and therefore gluten. May contain traces of MUSTARD. Reproduced from the ingredient and allergen declaration this listing publishes for this box. The panel printed on the box you receive is the one that governs.

No added sugar: HiPP states no added sugars for this box and notes that the product contains natural sugars. Nothing in the list is a sugar, a syrup or a juice concentrate; the carbohydrate comes from the grain.

Thiamine mononitrate is the form of vitamin B1 used here.

Read as a list, that is six cereal components and one vitamin. Nothing is added to sweeten, color, flavor, salt or preserve it, and no milk ingredient is declared.

  • 100% cereal, five wholegrains
  • 80% wholegrain flour blend
  • 20% wheat semolina
  • With added vitamin B1
  • No added sugar
  • No added colorings
  • No added flavorings
  • No milk ingredient declared
  • Contains gluten, all six components
How far it goes

How far a box goes, and why no bowl count is given

HiPP publishes clear quantities per bowl for this cereal, 22 g on the milk routes and 11 g on the fruit route. What is missing is the other half of the arithmetic.

No net weight is published for this box here

This listing does not state a pack size for this cereal, and the shipping weight recorded against it is a carrier figure rather than the net contents. HiPP sells its milk-free cereals in more than one pack size across markets, and this product ships in two different market boxes, so a bowl count worked out from an assumed weight would be invented. None is given. The net weight is printed on the box, and dividing it by the figures below gives the count for the pack in your hand.

Preparation Flakes per bowl Bowls per box
With infant formula, or half milk and water 22 g divide your pack weight by 22
Milk-free, with fruit puree 11 g divide your pack weight by 11

What can be said without a pack weight is that the fruit route uses half the powder the milk routes do, so a box goes roughly twice as far that way. On the half-milk route a prepared bowl comes to about 222 g once the flakes, water and milk are in it.

We would rather leave this figure out than estimate it. If you tell us the weight printed on the box you received, we will add it to this page.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

How do I prepare HiPP 100% Multigrain Cereal?

Three ways. With your usual milk mixture: make up approximately 200 ml, cooled to about 50 degrees Celsius, and stir it into 3 to 4 tablespoons, 22 g, of flakes. With half milk and water: boil 100 ml of milk with 100 ml of water, cool to about 50 degrees, and use the same 22 g. Milk-free: pour 100 ml of boiled and cooled water over 2 heaped tablespoons, 11 g, then add about 100 g of fruit puree and a teaspoon of rapeseed oil. Let it swell, check the temperature, spoon-feed.

Is it gluten free?

No, and it is one of the boxes furthest from it. Oat, wheat, barley, spelt and rye all carry gluten, and so does the wheat semolina. HiPP declares gluten for this box and we make no gluten-free claim for it.

Which five grains are in it?

Oat, wheat, barley, spelt and rye, as a wholegrain flour blend making up 80 percent of the box. The remaining 20 percent is wheat semolina.

From what age can my baby have it?

From the 6th month, which is the age on this product. Six gluten-bearing cereal components arrive together, so it is better once oats and wheat have each been introduced on their own.

Does it contain milk powder?

No milk ingredient is declared for this box. That is why it has a milk-free preparation, and why it is the cereal to use when you want it to carry a formula your baby is already on.

Does it contain added sugar?

No. HiPP states no added sugars for this box and notes that it contains natural sugars, which come from the grain itself.

Why does my box look different from the photo?

HiPP ships this cereal in an English box and a German box. Both hold exactly the same product with the same ingredients, and HiPP says so. Only the printing differs.

How many bowls does a box make?

We cannot give that figure honestly, because no net weight is published for this box here. HiPP's own quantities are 22 g of flakes per bowl on the milk routes and 11 g on the fruit route, so dividing the weight printed on your box by those gives the count for the pack you have.

Other HiPP cereals and what goes with this one

Written from this product's own ingredient and allergen declaration, HiPP's own nutrient statement for the vitamin B1, and HiPP's own three preparations with their quantities, all as this listing publishes them, together with HiPP's note that the English and German boxes hold the same product. The 6-month age is taken from the product itself. No net weight is stated anywhere for this box on this listing, so no pack size and no bowls-per-box figure are given, and no weight has been carried across from another HiPP cereal.
