HiPP Organic Buckwheat Milk Cereal, 250 g, from 4 months
HiPP Organic Buckwheat Milk Cereal is an organic milk cereal for babies from 4 months, built on 39 percent buckwheat flour. The milk powder is already in the box, so you make it up with water alone. HiPP marks it gluten free, it carries no added sugar and no juice concentrates, and it comes as flakes in a 250 g box.
Buckwheat is the interesting part. Despite the name it is not a wheat and not a cereal grain at all, which is why a buckwheat baby cereal can be gluten free while a wheat one cannot. It has a fuller, slightly nutty taste than rice, and at 39 percent of the dry mix it is the largest single ingredient here rather than a flavoring.
Because it is a milk cereal, the dairy is in the flakes: partially demineralized whey and 13 percent skimmed milk powder. That makes a prepared bowl a complete course rather than a thickened milk feed, and it means boiled water is the only thing you need to add.
The box also carries galacto-oligosaccharides from lactose, which is the prebiotic fiber HiPP sells under the PRAEBIOTIK name, and vegetable oils from sunflower and rapeseed. HiPP describes the cereal as valuable and easily digestible, which is the usual way of saying the starch has been broken down so it needs no cooking.
The added micronutrients are the reason a milk cereal earns a place in the day. HiPP states that the calcium in it is for the bones, that the iron is for blood formation and cognitive development, that the iodine is for thyroid function and that vitamins A and D are for the immune system. It is rich in vitamin C, for iron absorption, and rich in vitamin B1, for energy-yielding metabolism.

Where it fits
Where this one sits in the weaning day
This is a daytime milk cereal, and the case for it is variety without gluten. Most of the gluten-free boxes in a weaning cupboard are rice or corn, both of which are mild to the point of being plain. Buckwheat tastes of something, which matters by the time a baby has had three weeks of rice.
It is not a first cereal. The box brings buckwheat, cow's milk protein, whey and lactose at once, so a reaction would leave you guessing. The usual order is a single gluten-free grain first, then milk, a few days apart. HiPP's own single-grain boxes are the way to do that, and this one becomes straightforward afterwards.
The portion grows with your baby rather than the product changing. HiPP publishes 35 g of flakes from 4 months, 40 g from the 6th month and 45 g from the 8th, each with its own water measure, so the same box follows a baby across those three stages.
Do not make it up with milk or with formula. The milk powder is already in the flakes and the quantities HiPP publishes assume water. Boil the water and let it cool to 50 degrees Celsius before it meets the powder, check the temperature yourself before your baby does, make every bowl fresh, and spoon-feed it.

1
Boil the water
Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to 50 degrees Celsius. Water that is too hot works against the flakes dissolving rather than for it.
2
Measure the flakes for your baby's age
35 g, about 3 tablespoons, from 4 months. 40 g, 3 to 4 tablespoons, from the 6th month. 45 g, about 4 tablespoons, from the 8th. The flakes go into the bowl first.
3
Pour the matching amount of water
120 ml, 135 ml or 150 ml to go with the flake quantity above, poured onto the powder rather than the powder into the water.
4
Mix it through
Stir until no dry pockets are left. HiPP notes that every baby eats a different amount, so the three quantities are recommendations rather than a rule.
5
Let it swell
Leave it standing until it reaches the consistency you want. A looser bowl means serving sooner, a thicker one means waiting a little longer.
6
Check the temperature, then spoon-feed
Check it yourself before the bowl reaches your baby, and feed it straight away rather than keeping a made-up bowl back for later.

Quantities are HiPP's own for this box. The prepared portion is given in millilitres on this box's own table, where HiPP's other cereals give it in grams; the figures are reproduced in the unit the table uses. Tablespoon measures are a guide to the gram weights beside them rather than a substitute for them.
Do not use a microwave. Check the box and inner bag are intact before first use, close the pack after every use, keep it dry at room temperature, and use the contents within 3 to 4 weeks of opening.
What the nutrients do
The added nutrients, and what HiPP's label says about them
These are the nutrients this box's own label makes a statement about, with the statement as the label gives it.
Nutrient
What the label states
Calcium
For the bones
Iron
For blood formation and cognitive development
Iodine
For thyroid function
Vitamins A and D
For the immune system
Vitamin C
Rich in vitamin C, for iron absorption
Vitamin B1
Rich in vitamin B1, for energy-yielding metabolism
Vitamin E is in the panel as DL-alpha tocopheryl acetate and is listed without a function statement, because this box's label does not make one for it. No nutrition table with amounts and percentages is published for this box on this listing, so none is reproduced here; the declaration printed on your box carries the figures. HiPP also states that the box contains no juice concentrates, which is a composition statement rather than a nutrition one.
Ingredients and allergens
What is in it
Contains milk, and HiPP marks it gluten free
This box contains cow's milk in three forms: partially demineralized whey, skimmed milk powder at 13 percent, and the lactose the galacto-oligosaccharides are made from. Buckwheat is not a gluten cereal and HiPP marks the box gluten free. Read the allergen panel printed on your own box before preparing a feed.
Allergens: MILK, as whey, skimmed milk powder and lactose.
Reproduced from the ingredient declaration this listing publishes for this box. HiPP's own published product information for the same article confirms the 250 g pack, the 4-month age and the gluten-free marking. The panel printed on the box you receive is the one that governs.
No added sugar and no juice concentrates: both are HiPP's own statements for this box. Nothing in the list is a sugar or a syrup, and the sugars in a prepared bowl come from the lactose in the milk fractions.
The last eight entries are the added vitamins and minerals under their chemical names: L-ascorbic acid is vitamin C, iron diphosphate is the iron, DL-alpha tocopheryl acetate is vitamin E, thiamine mononitrate is vitamin B1, retinyl acetate is vitamin A, potassium iodate is the iodine and cholecalciferol is vitamin D.
Read as a list, that is one gluten-free pseudo-cereal at 39 percent, three milk fractions, two vegetable oils, a prebiotic fiber and the added vitamins and minerals. Nothing is added to color, flavor or preserve it.

Portions
How many bowls a 250 g box makes
Because HiPP publishes a different flake quantity for each age, the bowl count falls as your baby grows. Each figure is one division of the 250 g pack.

So a 250 g box is about seven bowls for a four-month-old and about five for an eight-month-old. At one cereal meal a day that is a week from a box at the younger end.
All three figures are calculated from HiPP's own gram weights and the 250 g pack size, and the arithmetic is shown so you can check it. A level tablespoon varies between hands, so treat the bowl count as a planning figure rather than a promise.

Questions parents ask
Frequently asked questions
How do I prepare HiPP Buckwheat Milk Cereal?
With water only. Boil fresh water and cool it to 50 degrees Celsius. Put the flakes in the bowl first: 35 g from 4 months, 40 g from the 6th month, 45 g from the 8th. Pour on 120 ml, 135 ml or 150 ml of water to match and mix it through. Let it swell, check the temperature, and spoon-feed it. Do not use a microwave.
Do I add formula or milk to it?
No. The whey and skimmed milk powder are already in the flakes, so water is the only liquid it needs and HiPP's quantities assume water.
Is buckwheat gluten free?
Yes. Buckwheat is not a wheat and not a cereal grain, and it carries no gluten. HiPP marks this box gluten free. Read the allergen panel on your own box before preparing a feed.
From what age can my baby have it?
From 4 months, which is the age on this product and the age HiPP's own published information gives for the same article.
Does it contain milk?
Yes, in three forms: partially demineralized whey, skimmed milk powder at 13 percent, and the lactose the galacto-oligosaccharides are made from. It is not suitable for a milk-free diet.
Does it contain added sugar?
No. HiPP states no added sugars and no juice concentrates for this box. The sugars in a prepared bowl are the lactose from the milk fractions.
What is PRAEBIOTIK?
It is HiPP's name for the prebiotic fiber in its cereals, which appears on this panel as galactooligosaccharides from lactose. It is a fiber rather than a nutrient with a function statement, and none is made for it on this box.
How many portions does a 250 g box make?
About seven at the 4-month quantity of 35 g, about six at 40 g and about five at 45 g. The arithmetic is in the portions table on this page.
Written from this product's own ingredient declaration, nutrient statements and recommended amounts by age as this listing publishes them. HiPP's own published product information for the same article confirms the 250 g pack size, the 4-month age and the gluten-free marking. Nutrient function statements are given only where this box's label makes them, and no nutrition table with amounts is reproduced because none is published for this box here.
