What is HiPP HA Pre Combiotik formula?
HiPP HA Pre is a German hydrolysed infant formula for babies from birth to around 6 months, made with whey protein broken down to roughly 86–87% and with lactose as its carbohydrate. One box is 600g — about 157 fl oz of prepared formula, or roughly 31 five-ounce bottles.
The HA line exists for one specific reason: to help reduce the risk of a cow's milk protein allergy developing in babies whose families have a history of allergy, eczema, asthma or hay fever. The whey protein is cut into smaller fragments before it ever reaches the tin, so a baby's immune system meets it in a less intact form.
That is a risk-reduction product, not a treatment. HA formula is not for a baby who already has a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy — that needs an extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid formula, prescribed and supervised by a doctor. If your baby has been diagnosed, or you suspect an allergy, speak to your paediatrician before buying anything.
"Pre" is the European convention for the earliest newborn stage, formulated to track breast milk's carbohydrate profile as closely as the category allows. Prepared as directed, every 100ml provides 66 kcal, 3.6g fat, 1.3g protein from hydrolysed whey, 7.0g carbohydrate of which 6.9g is lactose, 0.3g GOS prebiotic, 13.2mg DHA and 13.2mg ARA. The DHA and ARA come from fish oil and Mortierella alpina oil, so this formula is not vegetarian.

What does "hydrolysed" actually mean in HiPP HA Pre?
Hydrolysis means the whey protein has been cut into smaller pieces with enzymes before the powder is made. In HiPP's HA line that breakdown is measured at roughly 86–87%, so most of what your baby drinks arrives as short peptide fragments rather than whole protein chains.
Why that matters: an allergic reaction begins when the immune system recognises a particular shape on an intact protein. Cut the chain up and fewer of those shapes survive. That is the whole idea behind hypoallergenic baby formula in the HA sense — fewer intact targets, and therefore a lower chance of sensitisation in a baby who is genetically predisposed but not yet allergic.
Be careful with the labels, because the industry is not consistent about them. Sources — including HiPP's own regional sites — describe this same 86–87% figure as both "partially" and "extensively" hydrolysed. The number is the reliable part; the adjective is not. What is unambiguous is the tier: this is not the extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed for a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy.
The trade-off is taste. Broken-down protein smells and tastes more bitter than intact protein, and hydrolysed formulas are known for it. Babies started on HA from birth generally accept it without trouble; a baby switching across at four months may notice.

Hydrolysis reduces allergenicity. It does not eliminate it, and no HA formula is safe for a baby with a confirmed cow's milk protein allergy.

There is no maltodextrin, no added starch and no added sucrose or glucose syrup — lactose does all of the carbohydrate work, which is the point of a Pre-stage formula. What this box is not is organic: EU rules bar a hydrolysed-protein formula from the organic label, and it does contain palm oil among its vegetable oils.

Being straight with you: Aptamil HA Pre comes in a bigger 800g box that makes roughly 185 fl oz, so it is not a like-for-like price comparison against this 600g box — work out the cost per prepared ounce before you decide, and expect fewer reorders with Aptamil. Aptamil also uses a Bifidobacterium breve probiotic rather than HiPP's L. fermentum, and neither strain has the better claim here. HiPP HA Pre's advantages are the Combiotik GOS-plus-probiotic system and the German 600g format that some parents prefer for freshness once opened. How do you prepare HiPP HA Pre?

Sterilise everything
Wash your hands, then sterilise the bottle, teat, cap and the scoop before every single feed.

Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to the temperature printed on your box before you mix anything.

Can I combine HiPP HA Pre with breastfeeding?
Yes. Combination feeding is common and HiPP HA Pre can be used alongside breast milk rather than replacing it, which is worth knowing if you are using formula for some feeds and breastfeeding for others. Breast milk remains the best option for your baby, and if you are feeding for allergy-risk reasons it is worth discussing the plan with your health visitor or paediatrician, since guidance on allergy prevention has changed over the years.

HiPP HA 2 is the follow-on stage, formulated for babies from around six months who have started solid food. Moving up is not urgent on a particular date — the usual trigger is your baby reaching six months and eating solids, at which point a follow-on milk's higher iron and different nutrient profile suits them better. Introduce the new box gradually over a few days rather than switching in one feed, and keep the same brand family if the change is going smoothly.
