What it is

HiPP BabySoft Face and Body Cream, 75 ml, from the first day of life

HiPP BabySoft Face and Body Cream is a rich baby face and body cream in a 75 ml tube, suitable from the first day of life. It is made for very sensitive skin, it is built around natural organic almond oil, and HiPP sells it as a cream for the whole family rather than for babies alone. HiPP states that it spreads easily and absorbs quickly.

This is the heavier end of the HiPP BabySoft range. A lotion is for keeping ordinary skin comfortable after a bath; a cream like this one is for the places that are out in the air all day and dry out first. HiPP recommends it specifically for more intensive care and for exposed areas such as the face and the hands, which is the reason it comes in a small tube rather than a pump bottle: it is the one you keep in the changing bag and in your coat pocket.

The care comes from oils rather than from a long list of actives. After water, the largest ingredient is sunflower seed oil, and the ingredient HiPP names on the front of the pack is natural organic almond oil, which appears on the panel as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil. Alongside them the panel carries panthenol, which is provitamin B5, glycerin, and a beta-glucan listed as Sodium Carboxymethyl Betaglucan.

What has been left out is a stated part of the specification. HiPP makes this cream without paraffin oil, without parabens, without silicones, without animal-derived ingredients and without essential oils, and it carries the SENSITIV designation that HiPP uses for its formulas built to keep the risk of allergy low. HiPP also states that it is free from the fragrances that the EU Cosmetics Regulation lists as suspected allergens. It is not fragrance-free: Parfum is on the panel, and the two statements are not in conflict, because the free-from claim is about those specific declarable fragrance allergens rather than about scent itself.

HiPP states a dermatologically confirmed tolerance for very sensitive skin. As a German baby care product it is the plain everyday tube rather than a specialist one, and no claim about any skin condition is made for it here.

Whose skin it suits

Whose skin this tube is for

HiPP dates this cream from the first day of life and describes it as suitable for everyone in the family, so one tube covers a newborn's cheeks in winter, a toddler's hands, and the adult who ends up using it as a hand cream. That is not a marketing stretch on HiPP's part; it is how the product is positioned on HiPP's own pages.

Where it earns its place is weather. Cheeks, chins and the backs of hands get wind, cold and indoor heating all day, and a baby moisturizer of this weight stays where you put it for longer than a milk lotion does. If your baby's skin is generally comfortable and you only want something after the bath, a lighter lotion is the better everyday choice and this tube is the one you add for the exposed bits.

Two things to read before you buy. It contains Parfum, so it is lightly scented rather than unscented; if you need a product with no fragrance in it at all, this is not that product. And it contains sweet almond oil, so check the ingredient panel before use if nut allergy is something your family watches for.

Cream, lotion or oil: which one do you actually need?

This cream is the richest of the three and the one HiPP points at the face and hands. For everyday all-over care after a bath there is HiPP Baby Milk Lotion Sensitive, 350 ml, and for massage or for a dry scalp there is HiPP Gentle Care Baby Oil. The nappy area is a separate job again, handled by HiPP BabySoft Nappy Rash Care Cream, 100 ml. Each has its own ingredient panel, so check the one on the pack you buy.

Using it

How to use it

Read this first

For external use only. Keep it away from the eyes, and rinse with clean water if any gets in. Keep the tube out of reach of children. Stop using it if the skin becomes red or irritated, and speak to your doctor or pharmacist if that does not settle. Check the ingredient panel printed on your tube before the first use.

HiPP publishes no quantity per application and no fixed frequency for this cream. What HiPP does give is general guidance in its own care advice: cream the face and hands lightly as often as they need it during the day, and cream the whole body thoroughly after a bath. The six steps below are ordinary practice built around that guidance rather than printed instructions. Follow whatever is printed on the tube you receive.

1

Start with clean, dry skin

After a wash or a bath, pat the skin dry first, including the creases. Cream goes on dry skin rather than wet skin, so it is absorbed instead of sitting on the surface.

2

Take a small amount

A pea-sized amount onto your own fingertips is enough for a face. A rich cream goes much further than it looks, and too much leaves a film rather than working in.

3

Warm it between your fingers

Rub it briefly between your fingertips before it touches your baby. It spreads more easily warm, which means less rubbing on the skin itself.

4

Face and hands, lightly

Work it over the cheeks, the chin and the backs of the hands, keeping clear of the eyes and the mouth. These are the areas HiPP names for this cream.

5

After a bath, go further

If you are using it all over, cream the whole body thoroughly once your baby is dry, and give the knees, elbows and ankles a second pass.

6

Let it absorb before dressing

Give it a moment to sink in rather than pulling clothes straight over it. HiPP states the cream absorbs quickly, and a short wait keeps it on the skin rather than on a sleeve.

For external use only. Avoid direct contact with the eyes. Keep out of reach of children. Discontinue use if the skin reacts, close the tube after each use, and store it at room temperature. Read the ingredient panel on your own tube before first use, because cosmetic formulations are revised from time to time.
What is in it

What is in HiPP BabySoft Face and Body Cream

The ingredient panel HiPP publishes for this tube is below, followed by a translation, because a cosmetic panel is written in INCI names that say very little to most people.

Lightly fragranced, and it contains almond

Parfum is on the panel, so this is a mildly scented cream and not an unscented one. HiPP's separate claim is that the cream is free from the fragrances the EU Cosmetics Regulation lists as suspected allergens, which is a narrower statement than fragrance-free. Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil is sweet almond oil, the organic almond oil HiPP names on the front of the pack. Read the full panel before use if nut allergy is a concern in your family.

On the label

Ingredients and more

Aqua, Helianthus Annuus Hybrid Oil, Cocoglycerides, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Myristyl Myristate, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Panthenol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Behenyl Alcohol, Myristyl Alcohol, Sodium Carboxymethyl Betaglucan, Xanthan Gum, Myristyl Glucoside, Sodium Anisate, Parfum.

Allergens: contains Parfum, and contains sweet almond as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil. A cosmetic carries no statutory allergen declaration, so this is a read-the-label note rather than a declaration. Names are given in INCI form, as published.

This is the panel HiPP publishes for HiPP BabySoft Pflegecreme, 75 ml. An earlier revision of this listing carried a nineteen-entry panel that named Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Zinc Oxide, Carbomer, Lactic Acid and Methylparaben; that is a superseded formulation and it has been replaced here by HiPP's current published list. The panel printed on the tube you receive is the one that governs, and cosmetic formulations are revised from time to time.

What the main ingredients are doing

On the panel What it is
Aqua Water, the base of the cream
Helianthus Annuus Hybrid Oil Sunflower oil, the main care oil and the largest ingredient after water
Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil Sweet almond oil, HiPP's organic almond component
Cocoglycerides A coconut-derived emollient that softens the skin surface
Glycerin Draws water into the skin, so it does not feel tight afterwards
Panthenol Provitamin B5, long used in skin care
Sodium Carboxymethyl Betaglucan A beta-glucan, used as a soothing and moisture-binding agent
Cetearyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Myristyl Alcohol Fatty alcohols, which thicken the cream and hold it together
Myristyl Myristate An emollient ester that gives the cream its texture
Cetearyl Glucoside, Myristyl Glucoside Sugar-derived emulsifiers that keep oil and water mixed
Xanthan Gum A natural thickener
Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Anisate The preservative system that keeps the tube safe once opened
Parfum The fragrance

The table translates the main ingredients only, it is not the full panel, and it is not given in panel order. The list above it is the complete published panel.

What is left out

What HiPP leaves out of it

On a baby cream the exclusions are often the reason for buying, so they are set out here with the qualifier that belongs to each one rather than as a row of badges.

  • No paraffin or mineral oil
  • No parabens
  • No silicones
  • No essential oils
  • No animal-derived ingredients
  • No allergy-suspect fragrances

No allergy-suspect fragrances. HiPP's claim is that the cream is free from the fragrances listed as suspected allergens under the EU Cosmetics Regulation. The cream does contain Parfum, so it is scented. SENSITIV. HiPP uses this designation for formulas built to keep the risk of allergy low; it is a formulation designation and not a medical one.

What is not claimed for this product

No fragrance-free, soap-free, vegan, cruelty-free or certified-organic claim is made for this cream, and none should be read into it. It contains Parfum. The organic reference belongs to the almond oil in it, not to the cream as a whole: this is not sold as a certified organic cosmetic. No pH figure is published for it, so none is stated. HiPP states a dermatologically confirmed tolerance for very sensitive skin; no claim about any skin condition is made for it here.

Pack size

What you get, and how the HiPP creams compare

This listing is one 75 ml tube. That is a deliberately small pack for a cream aimed at the face and hands, and it is the size that fits a changing bag rather than the size that sits by the bath.

How long it lasts cannot honestly be given as a number. HiPP publishes no quantity per application for this cream, and a cream is used by hand rather than measured, so any count of applications per tube would be invented. What can be said is how the HiPP skin care products differ in size and in purpose, which is usually the real question behind how long will it last.

HiPP product Size What it is for
This tube, Face and Body Cream 75 ml Richer care, aimed at face and hands
Baby Milk Lotion Sensitive 350 ml Lighter everyday care, all over, after a bath
Nappy Rash Care Cream 100 ml The nappy area only
Gentle Care Baby Oil Oil Massage, and dry patches on the scalp

These are separate HiPP products with separate ingredient panels, listed here by size and purpose only. No equivalence between their formulas is implied, and no number of applications per tube is claimed, because no quantity per application is published for this product.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

From what age can I use it?

From the first day of life, which is the age HiPP gives for this cream. There is no separate newborn version to start on first.

Can adults use it too?

Yes. HiPP sells it as a cream suitable for the whole family, and in practice it is often the tube that ends up being used as a hand cream.

Is it fragrance-free?

No. Parfum is on the ingredient panel, so it is lightly scented. What HiPP claims is narrower: that the cream is free from the fragrances the EU Cosmetics Regulation lists as suspected allergens. If you need a product with no fragrance at all, this is not the one.

Does it contain nuts?

It contains sweet almond oil, listed on the panel as Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil. Read the full ingredient panel before use if nut allergy is a concern in your family.

Is this an organic cream?

No. HiPP describes it as containing natural organic almond oil, and that organic reference belongs to the almond oil. The cream itself is not sold as a certified organic cosmetic and we make no organic claim for it.

How is it different from the milk lotion?

Weight and target. This is the richer of the two and HiPP points it at the face and the hands, the areas that are exposed to the air all day. The milk lotion is lighter and intended for everyday all-over care. They are separate products with separate ingredient panels.

Can I use it on the nappy area?

That is not what it is for. HiPP makes a separate nappy rash care cream for that job, with a different formulation. Use the one built for the area.

How much should I use, and how often?

HiPP publishes no quantity per application and no fixed frequency for this cream, so we do not state one. HiPP's general care advice is to cream the face and hands lightly as often as they need it, and to cream the whole body thoroughly after a bath. Follow whatever is printed on the tube you receive.

Does it contain parabens?

Not on HiPP's current published panel, which gives Phenoxyethanol and Sodium Anisate as the preservatives. An older formulation did contain Methylparaben, so check the panel on the tube you receive.

The rest of the HiPP bath and skin care range

Written from HiPP's own published product information for HiPP BabySoft Pflegecreme, 75 ml, on HiPP's German shop. The ingredient panel, the 75 ml pack size, the from-the-first-day-of-life age, the organic almond oil reference, the free-from statements and the dermatologically confirmed tolerance for very sensitive skin are all taken from that source. HiPP publishes no quantity per application and no washing or creaming frequency for this product, so none is stated and the steps above are identified as general practice. No pH figure, microplastics claim or biodegradability claim is published for this product, so none is made. No claim about any skin condition is made. An older ingredient revision carried by an earlier version of this listing has been replaced by HiPP's current published panel; the panel on the tube you receive governs.
