HiPP Gentle Care Baby Oil for sensitive and normal skin, from the first days of life
This is the HiPP Babysanft baby oil, a European baby care oil built on natural organic almond oil and sunflower oil and nothing much else. The ingredient panel runs to four entries, which is unusually short for a skin care product and is the whole point of this one. HiPP gives the age as suitable from the first day of life.
It does two jobs. It protects the skin from drying out, gently and over a long period, which is what an oil does better than a lotion on skin that is already dry. And it is a baby massage oil, which is the other reason parents buy it: an oil with no mineral oil and no essential oil in it is a reasonable thing to have on your hands for twenty minutes at bedtime.
It is made for sensitive and normal baby skin, and HiPP also suggests it for dry adult skin, applied after a shower while the skin is still damp. The recipe is built without mineral oil, without parabens and without essential oil, and it carries vitamin E.

Babies from the first days, for two moments in the day in particular. At the changing mat it goes on for gentle cleansing and care in the diaper area, which is HiPP's own description of the job. And at bath time or bedtime it is the oil for a baby massage, warmed in your palms first.
It suits skin that dries out, and it suits skin that reacts to things, because there is very little in it to react to. If you are the parent reading every panel in the aisle, this is a short one: two plant oils, a vitamin E ester and a fragrance. There is no emulsifier, no preservative and no water in it, because an oil needs none of those.
HiPP publishes no quantity of oil per application and no frequency of use for this product, so neither is stated. The steps below follow HiPP's published uses for the oil; the detail of how to go about a massage is general practice rather than manufacturer instruction.

Warm it in your hands first
A few drops into your own palms and rub them together. Oil straight from the bottle onto a baby is cold, and a cold start is usually the end of the massage.

Use less than you think
An oil spreads much further than a lotion. Start small and add more if the skin drinks it in; what is left sitting on the surface has nowhere to go.

Work with slow, light strokes
Legs and arms from the body outward, then the tummy in a gentle clockwise circle, then the back. Keep one hand on your baby the whole time and stop as soon as they have had enough.

At the changing mat, use it to clean and care
HiPP suggests it for gentle cleansing in the diaper area. A little on a soft cloth or on cotton lifts what a wipe struggles with, without rubbing.

On dry adult skin, apply to damp skin
HiPP's own suggestion for adults is to use it after showering while the skin is still damp, which is when an oil holds the most water in.

Close the bottle and keep it cool
Plant oils keep better away from heat and light. Keep the cap on, store it out of the sun, and keep it out of reach of children.
For external use only. Avoid direct contact with the eyes and rinse with clean water if it happens. An oiled baby is a slippery baby, so keep a firm hold and never oil a baby on a raised surface you are about to step away from, or in the bath. Keep the bottle out of reach of children.
