What it is

HiPP Peach Apricot Organic Milk Cereal, 250 g, from 4 months

HiPP Peach Apricot Organic Milk Cereal is an organic milk cereal for babies from 4 months. The milk powder is already in the box, so you make it up with water alone rather than with formula. It is gluten free, it carries no added sugar, and the fruit is peach and apricot. It comes as flakes in a 250 g box.

A milk cereal is a different thing from a plain grain porridge, and the difference is what you add. Here the skimmed milk powder, the whey and the vitamins are in the flakes, so the bowl is complete once water goes in. For an evening feed, or for a bottle-free meal away from home, that is the whole point: one box, boiled water, a spoon.

The grain base is 30 percent rice flour with 7 percent corn flour, both gluten-free grains, which is why HiPP marks this box gluten free. The fruit is 2.9 percent peach flakes and 1.5 percent apricot powder, with a passion fruit juice powder alongside them. The flavor is mild and on the floral side of fruity rather than sharp.

The added micronutrients are the reason a milk cereal is worth having in the day at all. This box carries calcium and vitamin D, which are needed for the normal growth and development of bone in children; iron, which contributes to normal cognitive development and to the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin; and iodine, which contributes to normal thyroid function. Vitamins A, C, E and B1 are in it as well.

It also carries galacto-oligosaccharides from lactose, the prebiotic fiber HiPP uses across its cereals, and vegetable oils from sunflower and rapeseed. As a European baby cereal it sits between a plain single grain and a full meal: fruit, grain, milk and a short list of added nutrients, made up with nothing but water.

Where it fits

Where this one sits in the weaning day

This is the box for the meal you want to be self-contained. Because the milk is in the flakes, a prepared bowl is a cereal-and-milk course rather than a thickened milk feed, and that makes it the usual choice for the late-afternoon or evening meal in the first months of solids.

It is not a first cereal, and that is worth being plain about even though the age says 4 months. One box brings rice, corn, cow's milk protein, whey, lactose, peach, apricot and passion fruit at once. Introduce a single grain first, then milk, then fruit, so that if something disagrees you know which of those it was. Once each of them has been met, this box is a straightforward next step.

The portions scale with age rather than the product changing, which is the other reason it lasts. HiPP publishes three quantities for the same flakes: 35 g of powder from 4 months, 40 g from the 6th month and 45 g from the 8th, each with its own water measure. The same box follows your baby through those three stages.

If this would be your baby's first cereal

Start somewhere with one ingredient in it. HiPP's Organic 100% Rice Grain Porridge, 200 g is rice flour and vitamin B1 and nothing else, and it is also from 4 months. Come back to a milk cereal once grain, milk and fruit have each been introduced on their own.

Preparation

How to prepare HiPP Peach Apricot Milk Cereal

Read this before the first bowl

This porridge is prepared with water only. Do not make it up with milk or with formula, because the milk powder is already in the flakes and the quantities HiPP publishes assume water. Boil the water and let it cool to 50 degrees Celsius before it meets the powder. Spoon-feed the porridge immediately after preparing it, make each bowl fresh, and do not heat a prepared porridge in a microwave.

50 °CCool the water to this
35 gFlakes, from 4 months
120 mlWater, from 4 months
1 minTime to swell
1

Boil the water

Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to 50 degrees Celsius. Water that is too hot works against the powder dissolving rather than for it.

2

Measure the flakes for your baby's age

35 g, about 3 tablespoons, from 4 months. 40 g, about 3 to 4 tablespoons, from the 6th month. 45 g, about 4 tablespoons, from the 8th. The flakes go into the bowl first.

3

Pour the right amount of water

120 ml, 135 ml or 150 ml to match the flake quantity above. The water goes onto the powder rather than the powder into the water.

4

Mix it through

Stir until there are no dry pockets left. Every baby eats a different amount, so HiPP gives the quantities as recommendations rather than as a fixed rule.

5

Leave it a minute to swell

One minute is enough for these flakes. Leaving it longer gives a thicker bowl, which can suit an older baby who is working at the spoon.

6

Check the temperature, then spoon-feed

Check it yourself before the bowl reaches your baby, and feed it straight away with a spoon rather than keeping a made-up bowl back for later.

HiPP's recommended amounts by age

From Flakes Water Prepared portion
4 months 35 g (about 3 tbsp) 120 ml 155 g
The 6th month 40 g (about 3-4 tbsp) 135 ml 175 g
The 8th month 45 g (about 4 tbsp) 150 ml 195 g

Quantities are HiPP's own for this box and are confirmed by HiPP's published product information for the same article. Tablespoon measures are a guide to the gram weights beside them rather than a substitute for them. Each baby eats a different amount, so treat the three rows as starting points.

Do not use a microwave. HiPP states a risk of burns. Check the pack is not damaged before you open it, store unopened boxes at room temperature and not above 25 degrees Celsius, keep an opened box in a dry place and seal it tightly after each use, and consume the contents within 3 to 4 weeks. HiPP also notes that the pack is filled under protective gas.
What the nutrients do

The added nutrients, and what HiPP's label says about them

A milk cereal carries added micronutrients that a plain grain porridge does not. These are the four that this box's own label makes a statement about, with the statement as the label gives it.

Nutrient What the label states
Calcium and vitamin D Needed for the normal growth and development of bone in children
Iron Contributes to normal cognitive development, and to the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin
Iodine Contributes to normal thyroid function
Vitamin C Improves the absorption of iron from the same meal

Vitamins A, E and B1 are in the panel as retinyl acetate, DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate and thiamine mononitrate, and are listed without function statements here because no statement is made for them on this box. HiPP lists omega-3 ALA among this cereal's features, which the rapeseed oil in the panel accounts for; no function claim is made for it on this page, because the brain and nervous system claim in this category belongs to DHA rather than to ALA. An earlier version of this listing carried that claim for ALA and it has been removed.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in it

Contains milk, and HiPP marks it gluten free

This box contains cow's milk in three forms: partially demineralized whey, skimmed milk powder and the lactose the galacto-oligosaccharides are made from. HiPP marks the cereal gluten free. Read the allergen panel printed on your own box before preparing a feed.

On the label

Ingredients and more

30% rice flour, partially demineralized WHEY, 13% skimmed MILK powder, vegetable oils (sunflower, rapeseed), 7% corn flour, galactooligosaccharides from LACTOSE, 2.9% peach flakes (peach puree, rice flour), passion fruit juice powder (passion fruit juice, maltodextrin), 1.5% apricot powder (apricot pulp, maltodextrin), calcium carbonate, L-ascorbic acid, iron diphosphate, DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate, thiamine mononitrate, retinyl acetate, potassium iodate, cholecalciferol. Gluten-free.

Allergens: MILK, as whey, skimmed milk powder and lactose.

Reproduced from the ingredient declaration this listing publishes for this box, and matching HiPP's own published declaration for the same article entry for entry. The panel printed on the box you receive is the one that governs.

No added sugar: nothing in the list is a sugar, a syrup or a fruit juice concentrate. The sugars in a prepared bowl are the lactose from the milk and the sugars naturally present in the fruit.

The last six entries are the added vitamins and minerals under their chemical names: L-ascorbic acid is vitamin C, iron diphosphate is the iron, DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate is vitamin E, thiamine mononitrate is vitamin B1, retinyl acetate is vitamin A and cholecalciferol is vitamin D.

Read as a list, that is two gluten-free grains, three milk fractions, two vegetable oils, three fruit components and the added vitamins and minerals. Nothing is added to color, flavor or preserve it.

Portions

How many bowls a 250 g box makes

Because HiPP publishes a different flake quantity for each age, the bowl count falls as your baby grows. All three figures are one division of the 250 g pack.

Age Flakes per bowl Arithmetic Bowls per box
From 4 months 35 g 250 ÷ 35 about 7
From the 6th month 40 g 250 ÷ 40 about 6
From the 8th month 45 g 250 ÷ 45 about 5

So a 250 g box is about seven bowls for a four-month-old and about five for an eight-month-old. A prepared portion is 155 g, 175 g or 195 g respectively, which is the weight of the bowl rather than the weight of the powder.

All three figures are calculated from HiPP's own gram weights and the 250 g pack size, and the arithmetic is shown so you can check it. A level tablespoon varies between hands, so treat the bowl count as a planning figure rather than a promise.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

How do I prepare HiPP Peach Apricot Milk Cereal?

With water only. Boil fresh water and cool it to 50 degrees Celsius. Put the flakes in a bowl first: 35 g from 4 months, 40 g from the 6th month, 45 g from the 8th. Pour on 120 ml, 135 ml or 150 ml of water to match, mix, and leave it about a minute to swell. Check the temperature and spoon-feed it straight away. Do not use a microwave.

Do I add formula or milk to it?

No. The skimmed milk powder and whey are already in the flakes, so water is the only liquid it needs, and the quantities HiPP publishes assume water.

From what age can my baby have it?

From 4 months, which is the age on this product. It brings several new foods at once, though, so it is better after a single grain, milk and fruit have each been introduced separately.

Is it gluten free?

HiPP marks this box gluten free. The grains in it are rice flour and corn flour, neither of which is a gluten cereal. Read the allergen panel on your own box before preparing a feed.

Does it contain milk?

Yes, in three forms: partially demineralized whey, skimmed milk powder at 13 percent, and the lactose the galacto-oligosaccharides are made from. It is not suitable for a milk-free diet.

Does it contain added sugar?

No sugar is added. Nothing in the ingredient list is a sugar, a syrup or a fruit juice concentrate. The sugars in a prepared bowl are the lactose from the milk and the sugars naturally in the fruit.

How many portions does a 250 g box make?

About seven at the 4-month quantity of 35 g, about six at 40 g and about five at 45 g. The arithmetic is in the portions table on this page.

How long does it keep once opened?

Seal the box tightly after each use, keep it in a dry place at room temperature, and use the contents within 3 to 4 weeks. Store unopened boxes below 25 degrees Celsius and check the pack is undamaged before you open it.

Other HiPP cereals and what goes with this one

Written from this product's own ingredient declaration and HiPP's own recommended amounts by age, both of which were checked against HiPP's published product information for the same article, where the 250 g pack size, the 4-month age and the full ingredient panel all agree. Nutrient function statements are given only where this box's own label makes them. The omega-3 claim about brain and nervous system development that an earlier version of this listing carried has been removed, because that claim belongs to DHA and not to the ALA in rapeseed oil.
