What it is

HiPP Organic Chamomile Tea for Babies, 20 Tea Bags, from the 1st week

HiPP Organic Chamomile Tea for Babies is an organic herbal infusion made from 100 percent organic chamomile and nothing else. It comes as 20 tea bags of 1.5 g each, 30 g in all, and this product is suitable from the 1st week of life. The tea is sugar free and gluten-free, with no added flavors or preservatives and no added dairy, and HiPP states it is tested as tooth-friendly.

The ingredient list is one line: organic chamomile. There is no fruit, no sugar, no flavoring and no vitamin added, which is unusual enough among baby drinks to be the main thing worth saying about it. What you brew is the flower and the water.

Chamomile is traditionally the first tea offered to a baby, and HiPP describes it as ideally suited to that role. It is a mild infusion with very little taste, which is the point: a tea for a baby should be nearly plain, and this one is.

Chamomile is not a caffeinated plant, so the infusion carries no caffeine. It also carries no sugar, and HiPP states the tea is demonstrably tested as tooth-friendly and strictly controlled for harmful substances, which is the standard it applies to its baby range.

HiPP's preparation instruction includes one line in bold that is worth repeating here: do not sweeten it. A sweetened baby tea becomes a sugary drink, and the whole reason to choose a plain chamomile infusion is that it is not one.

This is a drink, offered in addition to milk rather than instead of it. It is not a feed, it is not a medicine, and nothing on this page claims any health effect for it, because HiPP makes none for it that we can source.

Where it fits

Where a baby tea fits, and where it does not

Milk comes first, and at the very start it is the only thing a baby needs. Breast milk or infant formula provides everything in the first months, and a tea is an extra drink alongside it rather than any part of a feed. HiPP's own portion guidance is one to two servings across the day, depending on the age of the child.

Water is the other everyday drink, and for most babies water and milk between them cover it. Where a mild tea earns a place is as something a little different that carries no sugar, no fruit acid and no calories, which is more than can be said for a juice.

Because this product is stated as suitable from the 1st week of life, it is worth being plain about the other side of that: a newborn's drinking is a question for your pediatrician or midwife, not for a product page. If your baby is only days or weeks old, ask them before offering any tea, and follow what they tell you.

Do not sweeten it, and do not let it be sipped all day

HiPP prints the do-not-sweeten instruction for a reason: adding sugar or honey turns a plain infusion into a sugary drink, and honey is in any case not given to babies under one year. Serve the tea from a cup at a set time rather than letting it be carried around and sipped, which is the habit that does the damage with any drink.

Preparation

How to prepare HiPP Organic Chamomile Tea

HiPP's own instructions for this tea

Pour about 200 ml of boiling water over the infusion bag and let it brew for 5 to 8 minutes. Cool it to drinking temperature, approximately 37 degrees Celsius. Check the temperature before serving. Always prepare the tea fresh. Please do not sweeten. Depending on the age of your child, 1 to 2 servings throughout the day.

1

Boil fresh water

Use freshly boiled drinking water, about 200 ml for one infusion bag. Fresh water boiled once is the right starting point for anything a baby drinks.

2

Pour it over the bag

Put the bag in the cup first and pour the boiling water over it, rather than dropping the bag into water that has already cooled.

3

Brew for 5 to 8 minutes

HiPP's own brewing time. Less than five minutes and you have barely made tea; longer than eight and it gets no better.

4

Remove the bag

Lift the bag out once the brewing time is up, and squeeze it as little as possible. One bag makes one serving.

5

Cool it to about 37 degrees

Let it come down to drinking temperature, which HiPP gives as approximately 37 degrees Celsius. Check the temperature yourself before it goes anywhere near your baby.

6

Serve it fresh and unsweetened

Always prepare the tea fresh and do not sweeten it. Offer it from a cup, and make the next serving new rather than keeping this one back.

The water volume, the brewing time, the 37-degree drinking temperature, the prepare-fresh and do-not-sweeten instructions and the 1 to 2 servings a day are all HiPP's own for this tea. The order-of-operations detail in the steps is ordinary practice rather than HiPP's words. The box in your hand governs.

Boiling water, and a temperature check every time. You are handling boiling water near a baby, so brew the tea out of reach and let it cool before it comes to the table. Check the temperature yourself before serving, every time. Always prepare the tea fresh rather than reheating it. Do not sweeten it, and do not give honey to a baby under one year. If your baby is a newborn, ask your pediatrician before offering tea at all.
Tea, water or juice

Tea, water or juice: what each one brings

These are the three things that get offered to a baby alongside milk, and they are not equivalent. The column that matters most for teeth and for appetite is the sugar one.

Drink Sugar Calories Needs preparing
This chamomile tea Sugar free Negligible Yes, brewed and cooled
Water None None No
A baby fruit juice Fruit's own sugar From the fruit sugar No, but often diluted

The sugar-free statement is HiPP's own for this tea. The rest of the table describes the three categories in general. Milk, whether breast milk or formula, is not in this table because it is a feed rather than a drink offered alongside one.

Ingredients and allergens

What is in it

One ingredient, with nothing else to declare

The ingredient is organic chamomile. HiPP states the tea is gluten-free, with no added dairy products, no added flavors and no added preservatives, and that it is sugar free. There is no cereal, no milk and no fruit in it. The full declaration on the box governs.

On the label

Ingredients and more

Ingredients: 100% organic chamomile.

Reproduced from the declaration carried for this tea by an authorized retailer of it. That is the whole list: one ingredient.

The statements carried with it: mild tea; high-quality organic chamomile; strictly controlled for harmful substances; demonstrably tested as tooth-friendly; sugar free; gluten-free; without added flavors and preservatives; without added dairy products; tastes good warm and cold; ideally suited as a first tea.

Chamomile is not a caffeinated plant, so the infusion contains no caffeine. That is a property of the plant rather than a claim made for this product.

The pack is 20 infusion bags of 1.5 g each, 30 g in all.

One source consulted for this tea also carried a bullet reading from 100 percent organic fennel, which contradicts both the product name and the ingredient line above. It is a fault in that page and it has not been used here.

No health claim of any kind is made for this tea on this page. HiPP publishes none for it that we could source, so none appears, and any effect you may have read elsewhere is not something we are repeating.

Read as a list, that is chamomile. Nothing is added to sweeten, flavor, color or preserve it, and nothing is added to fortify it either.

How far it goes

How much tea a box makes

This is one of the few products in the range where the yield arithmetic is clean, because HiPP gives a water volume per bag. One bag plus about 200 ml of water is one serving.

What you are counting Figure Note
Bags in the box 20 At 1.5 g each, 30 g in all
Water per bag about 200 ml HiPP's own instruction
Servings per box 20 One bag, one serving
Prepared volume per box about 4,000 ml Arithmetic: 20 bags at 200 ml
In fluid ounces about 135 fl oz Arithmetic from that volume

So a 20-bag box makes about 4 liters of prepared tea, which is roughly 135 fluid ounces. At HiPP's suggested 1 to 2 servings a day, a box is somewhere between ten and twenty days of tea.

That last figure is arithmetic from HiPP's own serving guidance rather than a usage statistic, and we have not printed a boxes-per-month number, because no sourced figure exists for this product.

The bag count and the 1.5 g and 30 g weights are the pack figures. The 200 ml per bag and the 1 to 2 servings a day are HiPP's own instructions. The prepared volume, the fluid-ounce conversion and the days-per-box range are arithmetic from those numbers and are labeled as such.

Questions parents ask

Frequently asked questions

From what age can my baby have this tea?

This product is stated as suitable from the 1st week of life. That said, a newborn needs only breast milk or formula, so if your baby is only days or weeks old, ask your pediatrician or midwife before offering any tea and follow their advice.

What is in it?

100 percent organic chamomile. There is no sugar, no flavoring, no added vitamin and no fruit in it.

How do I prepare it?

Pour about 200 ml of boiling water over one infusion bag, brew for 5 to 8 minutes, remove the bag, and cool it to drinking temperature of approximately 37 degrees Celsius. Check the temperature before serving, always prepare it fresh, and do not sweeten it.

Can I sweeten it?

No. HiPP prints the do-not-sweeten instruction, and sweetening it would turn a sugar-free drink into a sugary one. Honey in particular is not given to babies under one year.

Does it contain caffeine?

No. Chamomile is not a caffeinated plant, so a chamomile infusion carries no caffeine.

Does chamomile tea help with sleep or with a baby's tummy?

We make no claim of that kind for this tea. HiPP publishes no health claim for it that we could source, so none appears on this page. If your baby is unsettled or uncomfortable, that is a conversation for your pediatrician rather than something to treat with a drink.

How many servings a day?

HiPP gives 1 to 2 servings throughout the day, depending on the age of your child. It is an extra drink alongside milk rather than a replacement for any part of a feed.

How much tea does a box make?

20 bags at about 200 ml of water each is about 4 liters of prepared tea, which is roughly 135 fluid ounces. That is arithmetic from the bag count and HiPP's water volume.

Can it be served cold?

HiPP states the tea tastes good warm and cold. Prepare it fresh either way, and cool it from boiling rather than making it up with cold water.

The age of from the 1st week of life is taken from the product itself.
