What is Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch formula?

Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch is a European organic goat milk baby formula for babies from birth to 6 months, made from Demeter-certified whole goat's milk with lactose as the only carbohydrate. This listing is a single 800 g tin — about 200 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 40 five-ounce bottles.

What sets this tin apart from almost every other goat milk formula on the shelf is the certification. Holle's whole goat's milk and goat milk powder are Demeter certified — biodynamic farming, widely described as the highest organic standard in Europe, and a tier above the EU Organic seal that most organic formula carries. Holle is Swiss-founded with more than 90 years of heritage in biodynamic and organic infant nutrition, and this tin carries both the EU Organic seal and Demeter.

Goat milk is naturally rich in A2 beta-casein, the protein type that forms softer, smaller curds in the stomach. Goat milk also carries its own oligosaccharides — reported at up to five times the level found in cow milk — which feed the bacteria in a baby's gut. For a baby who seems gassy or unsettled on a standard cow's milk formula without a diagnosed allergy, this is the gentler step many parents try before anything medical.

At Stage 1 the only carbohydrate is lactose. There is no maltodextrin, no starch and no added sugar — those appear later in the Holle goat range, at Stage 2, when a baby's diet has diversified. The fat blend is organic sunflower and rapeseed oil with no palm oil, and the DHA comes from microalgae rather than fish oil.

This is a complete first infant milk: it can be your baby's sole source of nutrition from day one, or sit alongside breastfeeding as a top-up. One thing worth knowing if you have shopped the German Holle goat boxes before — the Dutch 800 g line has no separate PRE stage. Stage 1 covers newborns from birth. At around six months, when solids begin, the follow-on step is Holle Goat Stage 2 Dutch.

What's in Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch per 100ml?

Prepared as directed, every 100 ml provides 68 kcal, 3.4 g fat, 1.4 g protein and 8.0 g carbohydrate — all of it lactose — along with 72.2 mg calcium, 0.54 mg iron and 15 mg DHA sourced from microalgae rather than fish oil.

The ingredient deck opens with Demeter-certified organic whole goat's milk and organic lactose, followed by organic goat milk powder and an organic sunflower and rapeseed oil blend. DHA comes from microalgae oil, so there is no fish oil anywhere in the tin, and there is no palm oil in the fat blend. Amino acids, vitamins and minerals complete the recipe to European infant-formula regulation. Holle's approach here is deliberately minimal — no added GOS prebiotic, no inositol, no long list of extras.

Digestion

Is goat milk formula easier to digest than cow's milk formula?

Goat milk is predominantly A2 beta-casein, while conventional cow's milk carries a mix of A1 and A2. A2 protein forms a softer, smaller curd in the stomach, and that curd structure is the named mechanism behind the gentler-digestion claim — not a vague promise of comfort.

The difference sits at a single position in the protein chain. Where A1 beta-casein carries histidine at position 67, A2 carries proline. That one residue changes how the chain is broken apart during digestion, and with it how firmly the curd sets in the stomach.

Goat milk also contains naturally occurring goat milk oligosaccharides — reported at up to five times the level found in cow milk. These are not added; they come with the milk, and they act as food for the bacteria already living in a baby's gut.

What this means in practice is narrow and worth being clear about. Goat milk formula is a reasonable option for a baby who seems fussy, gassy or unsettled with no diagnosed allergy. It is not a treatment for cow's milk protein allergy: goat and cow milk proteins cross-react in most allergic infants, so a diagnosed allergy needs a hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed by your doctor.

proline 67
A1 beta-casein · conventional cow milk

Position 67 is the single amino-acid difference between the two protein variants. It changes how the chain breaks down during digestion, and with it how the curd sets.

Comparison

How does Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch compare to Kendamil Goat and Jovie Goat?

All three are A2 goat milk first formulas in 800 g tins with no palm oil. Holle is the only one certified Demeter as well as EU Organic; Jovie is EU Organic and adds halal and kosher certification but takes its DHA from fish oil; Kendamil is not organic certified at all, but is the only one built on whole milk with the milk fat globule membrane retained.

Being straight with you: two of these do things Holle does not. Jovie Goat Stage 1 pairs DHA with ARA at this stage and carries halal and kosher certification, so if either matters in your household Jovie is the better tin — the trade-off is that its DHA is fish-oil sourced, not algae. Kendamil Goat Stage 1 is built on whole milk with the milk fat globule membrane retained and adds a GOS prebiotic, neither of which Holle claims — but it is not organic certified at any stage. Holle's genuine advantages are the Demeter biodynamic certification on top of EU Organic, algae-sourced DHA, and a deliberately short ingredient list. We stock all three, and all three are 800 g tins, so the per-ounce comparison is straightforward here.

Planning ahead

How many tins of Holle Goat Stage 1 will my baby need per month?

Around 4 to 5 tins a month for an exclusively formula-fed newborn drinking 24 to 32 fl oz a day, since one 800 g tin makes roughly 200 fl oz of prepared formula — about 40 bottles at 5 fl oz each. Babies in their first few weeks drink less, so the early months typically land nearer 3 tins.

The jump is steep because intake climbs quickly over the first half-year. Plan against the band that matches your baby's current daily volume rather than a flat monthly number, and remember that any breastfeeding alongside formula pulls the figure down.

Estimates for exclusive formula feeding, worked from the 200 fl oz prepared yield of one 800 g tin. Every baby feeds differently — use these for planning, not as a target.

Preparation

How do you prepare Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch formula?

Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to about 40–50 °C, pour half the water your feed needs into a sterilised bottle, add the number of level 4.4 g scoops the feeding table on the tin calls for, shake thoroughly, add the remaining water, shake again, then cool to about 37 °C and feed straight away.

1

Sterilise everything

Wash your hands, then sterilise the bottle, teat, ring and cap following the manufacturer's instructions.

2

Boil, then cool to 40–50 °C

Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to about 40–50 °C (104–122 °F) before you use it.

3

Half the water in first

Pour about half the water your feed needs into the sterilised bottle before any powder goes in.

4

Add level scoops

Use only the scoop supplied in this tin. One flattened scoop is 4.4 g — never heap it, never pack it.

5

Shake, top up, shake again

Cap the bottle and shake thoroughly, add the rest of the water, then shake again until no powder is left.

6

Cool, test, feed

Cool to a drinking temperature of about 37 °C (98.6 °F), test a drop on your wrist, and feed straight away.

Follow the feeding table printed on this tin exactly, and do not change the powder-to-water ratio without explicit medical advice. Always prepare a fresh bottle for every feed, never re-use leftovers, never reheat, and never microwave prepared formula.

A note on water temperature. Holle specifies water at 40–50 °C for this formula, and that is the instruction printed on your tin. It is set deliberately — hotter water damages the heat-sensitive vitamins this formula is built around.

Many health authorities, including the NHS and WHO, advise 70 °C or hotter for any powdered formula, because powder is not sterile and that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. The difference matters most for newborns, premature babies, and babies with weakened immunity. If your baby is in one of those groups, ask your paediatrician or health visitor which to follow for your situation.

Please read before buying

Goat milk formula is not a treatment for cow's milk protein allergy. Goat and cow milk proteins are closely related and cross-react in most infants with a diagnosed allergy, so this tin is not a substitute for a prescribed hydrolysed or amino-acid formula — speak to your doctor. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.

Store tins in a cool, dry place with the lid firmly closed. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.

Packaging & tins

Tins can pick up small dents under pressure in transit. A dent in the outer tin does not affect the sealed powder inside, and the seal on every tin we ship is intact. If a seal is ever broken, or the powder looks or smells wrong, do not use it — message us and we will replace it.

Questions parents ask

Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch: frequently asked questions

What age is Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch formula for?

Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch is a first infant milk for babies from birth to 6 months. It is a complete food and can be used as your baby's sole source of nutrition from day one, or as a top-up alongside breastfeeding. Unlike the German Holle goat range, the Dutch 800 g line has no separate PRE stage, so Stage 1 is the newborn product. At around six months, when solids are introduced, Holle Goat Stage 2 Dutch is the follow-on milk.

Is Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch organic and Demeter certified?

Yes to both. This tin carries EU Organic certification, and its whole goat's milk and goat milk powder are Demeter certified, which is the biodynamic standard widely described as the strictest organic tier in Europe. That double certification is the clearest thing separating Holle from other goat formulas — Kendamil's goat line is not organic certified at all, and HiPP and Jovie hold EU Organic but not Demeter.

Can I use goat milk formula if my baby has a cow's milk allergy?

No. Goat milk formula is not a treatment for cow's milk protein allergy. Goat and cow milk proteins are structurally close enough that most infants with a confirmed allergy react to both, which is why goat formula is not classed as hypoallergenic. A diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy needs a hydrolysed or amino-acid formula prescribed by a doctor. Goat formula is a reasonable gentler option for an unsettled baby who has no diagnosis.

How much prepared formula does one 800 g tin make?

One 800 g tin of Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch makes approximately 200 fluid ounces of prepared formula, which works out at roughly 40 bottles of 5 fl oz each. Actual yield depends on how accurately each 4.4 g scoop is levelled off. For planning, an exclusively formula-fed baby drinking 24 to 32 fl oz a day will use around 4 to 5 tins a month, with the early weeks nearer 3.

Does Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch contain palm oil, fish oil or maltodextrin?

None of the three. The fat blend uses organic sunflower and rapeseed oils with no palm oil, the DHA comes from microalgae oil rather than fish oil, and at Stage 1 the only carbohydrate is lactose — no maltodextrin, no starch, no corn syrup and no added sugar. Maltodextrin and starch do appear later in the Holle goat range, from Stage 2 onward, once a baby's diet has diversified.

What is the difference between the Dutch 800 g tin and the German 400 g box?

They are genuinely different products, not the same formula in two packs. The Dutch line comes in 800 g metal tins and runs Stage 1 through Stage 4 with no PRE stage. The German line comes in 400 g cardboard boxes and includes a separate PRE stage, giving it five steps. The recipes also differ slightly between the two national formulations, so check which line you are buying before you compare prices — a 400 g box holds half the powder of an 800 g tin.

What formula comes after Holle Goat Stage 1 Dutch?

Holle Goat Stage 2 Dutch is the follow-on milk, made for babies from around 6 months once solid food has been introduced. There is no need to switch on your baby's six-month birthday, and most parents finish the tin they are on first. Move between stages gradually over several days, mixing the two if your baby is sensitive to change, and speak to your health visitor if you are unsure.
