How many boxes will my baby need?

Running out mid-week means a late-night store run, or switching formula on your baby. Work out how much to keep on hand.

Breast milk is best for babies. These are stock-planning estimates, not feeding advice. Every baby is different — always follow the feeding table on the box and your paediatrician's guidance on how much your baby should actually take.

Ranges assume the standard one-scoop-per-30ml preparation. Real usage shifts with growth spurts, starting solids, and how much formula ends up on the floor.

What is HiPP Kindermilch 1+?

HiPP Kindermilch 1+ is a German toddler milk for children from 12 months, made from skimmed milk with lactose as its carbohydrate and fortified with iron, calcium, vitamin D and DHA. It carries the Combiotik pairing of GOS prebiotic fibre with a live lactic acid culture. One 600 g box makes roughly 280 fl oz of prepared milk, about 55 cups of 150 ml.

This is a growing-up milk, not an infant formula. At twelve months a child is eating family food, so this is not a meal — it is a fortified drink that covers what toddler diets most commonly fall short on. The nutrients that matter here are iron and vitamin D, where plain cow's milk supplies almost none.

It sits after HiPP Stage 3 Bio Combiotik and carries the same GOS fibre and Lactobacillus fermentum hereditum culture your baby had in infancy, plus Metafolin, the bioactive form of folate the body can use without converting it first.

Certification

Is HiPP Kindermilch 1+ organic?

No. HiPP Kindermilch 1+ does not carry organic or Bio certification, and it does not hold the EU organic mark.

Our own listing used to say otherwise. It described this milk as EU Organic certified, and an earlier version called it Demeter certified as well. Both were wrong. We would rather correct that in plain sight than quietly change the wording, because a parent who bought this box believing it was organic deserves to know.

If organic certification is your deciding factor at this age, buy Holle Stage 4 instead — it carries EU Organic certification, and we stock it. What Kindermilch 1+ genuinely offers is the Combiotik prebiotic and live culture, Metafolin folate, and a lactose carbohydrate base with no added starch or sucrose. None of that depends on a certification.

Comparison

HiPP Kindermilch 1+ compared with 2+ and 3 Junior

All three are German HiPP toddler milks and none of them carries organic certification. 1+ starts at 12 months and is the richer of the two 600 g boxes; 2+ is lighter and starts at 24 months; 3 Junior is a smaller 500 g box, also from 12 months, and the only one of the three using plain folic acid rather than Metafolin.

Being straight with you: if you want a certified organic toddler milk, none of these three qualifies — Holle Stage 4 is EU Organic certified, and we sell it. Between the three HiPP boxes, 1+ and 2+ give far more prepared milk per box than 3 Junior and use the bioactive folate, so compare on price per prepared ounce rather than price per box.

Planning ahead

How many boxes of HiPP Kindermilch 1+ will my toddler need?

One 600 g box makes roughly 280 fl oz, about 55 cups of 150 ml. At the recommended two cups a day, that is a little under a month per box — so most families buying for a single toddler use about one box a month, or two if the milk is also going into cereal and cooking.

This is where a toddler milk is cheaper to run than an infant formula: two cups a day rather than a full day's feeds. If your child is a reliable eater, you may well use less than two cups and stretch a box further.

Estimates for planning only. Every child drinks differently, and the guideline serving is not a target to hit.

Preparation

How do you prepare HiPP Kindermilch 1+?

Boil fresh water and let it cool to 40–50°C (104–122°F), pour the measured water into a clean cup first, add three level scoops of powder for every 135 ml of water, stir until no powder is left on the sides, and check the temperature before serving. Make each drink fresh and discard anything left an hour after drinking starts.

Use only the measuring scoop supplied in the box, and level it rather than heaping it. Kindermilch 1+ can be served warm or cold. Never use artificially softened water or water boiled more than once, never reheat, and never microwave — hot spots scald. Reseal the box after opening, keep it dry at room temperature, and use it within three weeks.

Please read before buying

HiPP Kindermilch 1+ contains cow's milk protein, lactose and fish oil. It is not suitable for a child with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy or a fish allergy. It is a drink for a child over twelve months who is already eating family food — it is not an infant formula and must never be used as one. Talk to your doctor or health visitor if you are unsure whether your child needs a toddler milk at all.

Questions parents ask

HiPP Kindermilch 1+: frequently asked questions

Is HiPP Kindermilch 1+ organic?

No. It carries no organic or Bio certification and does not hold the EU organic mark. Earlier versions of this listing said it was EU Organic certified, and one said Demeter certified; both were incorrect and have been removed. For a certified organic toddler milk we stock Holle Stage 4, which carries EU Organic certification.

Is HiPP Kindermilch 1+ a baby formula?

No. It is a toddler or growing-up milk for children over twelve months, intended to be drunk from a cup alongside family meals. It must not be used as an infant formula or as a baby's sole source of nutrition. If you need a formula for a baby under twelve months, HiPP Stage 1, 2 or 3 are the right products.

Does my toddler need toddler milk instead of cow's milk?

Not necessarily, and we would rather say so. A twelve-month-old eating a varied diet can do well on whole cow's milk. Toddler milks exist because toddler diets commonly run short on iron and vitamin D — this one gives 1.2 mg iron and 2.3 µg vitamin D per 100 ml, where cow's milk gives almost no iron. If your child eats reliably, cow's milk and a varied plate may be all you need, and it costs less.

What is the difference between Metafolin and folic acid?

Metafolin is calcium L-methylfolate, the form of folate the body can use directly. Ordinary folic acid has to be converted first. Kindermilch 1+ and 2+ both use Metafolin; HiPP 3 Junior uses plain folic acid. It is a small formulation detail rather than a headline feature, but it is a genuine difference between the boxes and one reason the 600 g Kindermilch boxes are the stronger buy.

How much prepared milk does one 600 g box make?

About 280 fl oz, roughly 55 cups of 150 ml, at three level 3.6 g scoops per 135 ml of water. At two cups a day that is a little under a month per box.

What comes before and after HiPP Kindermilch 1+?

Before it comes HiPP Stage 3 Bio Combiotik, the follow-on milk for babies from around ten to twelve months. After it comes HiPP Kindermilch 2+, which is lighter and labelled from 24 months. There is no need to switch on a birthday — 1+ stays suitable well into the second year.

Can I serve it in an open cup rather than a bottle?

Yes, and that is how it is meant to be served. By twelve months the advice is to move off bottles, and this milk is designed as a cup drink. An open cup or a free-flow beaker is better for teeth than a bottle or a valved sippy cup.

Does HiPP Kindermilch 1+ contain palm oil?

Yes. The vegetable oil blend is palm, rapeseed and sunflower oil, and HiPP states the palm oil comes from sustainable cultivation. If you want to avoid palm oil entirely, it is worth comparing against other brands on our shelf rather than within the HiPP range.

Is it gluten-free, and what are the allergens?

It is gluten-free. It contains milk and milk products including lactose, and fish, since the DHA comes from fish oil. Those are the two allergens to be aware of. The full ingredient list is in the panel above.
