How many cans will my baby need?

Running out mid-week means a late-night store run, or switching formula on your baby. Work out how much to keep on hand.

Breast milk is best for babies. These are stock-planning estimates, not feeding advice. Every baby is different — always follow the feeding table on the can and your paediatrician's guidance on how much your baby should actually take.

Ranges assume the standard one-scoop-per-30ml preparation. Real usage shifts with growth spurts, starting solids, and how much formula ends up on the floor.

Single 800g Can · EU Bio Nature

What is Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 formula?

Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 is a British organic follow-on formula for babies from 6 to 12 months, made from organic whole milk and organic cream, with no palm oil, no fish oil and no maltodextrin. This listing is a single 800g can — about 209 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 41 five-ounce bottles.

Stage 2 is the can for a baby who has started solids but still takes most of their nutrition from milk. Two things change from Stage 1. The protein ratio flips from whey-dominant to casein-dominant at 40:60, which digests more slowly and is the reason follow-on milks are described as more filling. And this is the first Bio Nature stage with an explicitly named HMO — 3'-GL — alongside the organic GOS prebiotic.

If you are comparing this against Kendamil Organic Stage 2, that HMO is the honest headline. Both cans are organic certified and palm-oil-free, and the base differs the same way it does at Stage 1 — Bio Nature uses organic whole milk plus cream, Organic uses organic whole milk plus skimmed milk. But Organic Stage 2's own ingredient panel lists GOS and no named HMO, even where marketing copy says otherwise. Bio Nature Stage 2's HMO claim is the one that holds up against the label.

It is built on organic whole milk rather than skimmed milk rebuilt with vegetable oils, which is how most European baby formula is made, so the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) that naturally wraps milk fat survives into the powder. It is made in Kendal, in the English Lake District, by the only British-owned formula manufacturer, using milk from grass-fed Lake District herds. Use it as your baby's main milk drink from 6 months alongside a varied weaning diet, or alongside breastfeeding. Before this came Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1; after 10 to 12 months comes Stage 3.

What's in Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 per 100ml?

Prepared as directed, every 100ml provides 275 kJ / 66 kcal, 1.4g protein at a casein-dominant 40:60 whey-to-casein ratio, 54.2mg calcium and 16.1mg DHA sourced from microalgae. The prebiotic system is organic GOS plus a named HMO, 3'-GL, and the carbohydrate is organic lactose. There is no maltodextrin, no starch and no added sugar.

The ingredient deck opens with organic whole milk — 147g of liquid milk per 100g of powder — followed by organic whey protein, organic lactose, an organic sunflower, coconut and rapeseed oil blend, organic galacto-oligosaccharides and organic cream. DHA comes from Schizochytrium microalgae oil and ARA from Mortierella alpina, so there is no fish oil in the can. Nucleotides, choline, taurine, inositol and the full EU-mandated vitamin and mineral spread complete the recipe.

Fat and carbohydrate grams are not published in the data we hold for this can, and the figures above are carried from earlier research rather than a freshly fetched manufacturer panel — the printed panel on your can is the authority.

How it's made

Why is Kendamil made from whole milk instead of skimmed milk?

Because the fat is where the milk fat globule membrane lives. Kendamil builds Bio Nature Stage 2 on organic whole milk and organic cream and keeps the natural milk fat in place, rather than skimming the milk and rebuilding the fat from vegetable oils — which is how most follow-on formula in Europe is made.

This is the manufacturing choice that runs through Kendamil's whole range and the reason the brand is worth a second look at any stage. Skimming milk and adding a vegetable oil blend back in is cheaper, more consistent and perfectly legal — it is the industry default. What it strips out along the way is the membrane structure that naturally wraps each fat globule in milk. Kendamil starts from the other end: whole milk and cream first, oils added on top to balance the fat profile rather than to replace it.

What is not in Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2?

No palm oil, no fish oil, no maltodextrin, no starch, no corn syrup and no added sugar. The DHA comes from microalgae rather than fish, which makes the formula suitable for vegetarian families, and the can is EU Organic certified, non-GMO and gluten-free.

Comparison

How does Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 compare to Kendamil Organic Stage 2 and HiPP Stage 2?

Bio Nature 2 is the only one of the three whose HMO claim survives a look at its own ingredient panel, and the only one built on whole milk plus cream. But HiPP Stage 2 carries substantially more calcium and a live probiotic culture, and Kendamil Organic Stage 2 adds Red Tractor farm assurance that Bio Nature does not have.

Being straight with you: HiPP Stage 2 beats both Kendamil cans on calcium — 77mg against 54.2mg per 100ml — and it is the only one here with a live probiotic culture, which Kendamil has at no stage. It comes in a 600g box rather than an 800g can, so compare price per ounce, not per pack, or the comparison misleads you. Kendamil Organic Stage 2 carries Red Tractor farm assurance on top of its organic certification, which Bio Nature does not. Bio Nature 2's real advantages are the cream-enriched whole-milk base, the named HMO that its label actually backs up, and a lactose-only carbohydrate with no starch.

Planning ahead

How many cans of formula will my baby need per month?

A baby at 6 to 12 months typically uses about 2 to 3 cans of Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 per month, fewer than at Stage 1 because solid food is now carrying part of the load. One 800g can makes roughly 209 fl oz of prepared formula, which is about 41 five-ounce bottles.

The drop from Stage 1 surprises most parents. A newborn is taking all of their calories from milk; a nine-month-old on three meals a day is not. Plan against the lower end if weaning is going well, and against the upper end if your baby is still milk-led. Any breastfeeding alongside formula pulls the figure down again.

Estimates for exclusive formula feeding, from standard feeding guidelines rather than manufacturer-published figures. Every baby feeds differently — use these for planning, not as a target.

Preparation

How do you prepare Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2?

Boil fresh water and let it cool for no more than 30 minutes so it stays at least 70°C, pour the measured water into a sterilised bottle first, then add the number of level scoops your can's 6 to 12 month feeding chart gives for your baby's age, shake to dissolve, cool to body temperature and feed. Discard anything left after 2 hours.

70°C+Water temperature
Can chartLevel scoops by age
2 hoursDiscard after feeding starts
1

Sterilise everything

Wash and sterilise the bottle, teat, ring and cap, and wash your hands before you start.

2

Boil and cool

Boil fresh drinking water and leave it to cool for no more than 30 minutes, so it stays at least 70°C.

3

Water into the bottle first

Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.

4

Add level scoops

Add the number of level scoops your can's 6 to 12 month chart gives for your baby's age, levelling each one with the back of a clean knife.

5

Cap and shake

Put the cap on and shake well for about ten seconds until the powder has fully dissolved.

6

Cool, test, feed

Cool the bottle under running water, test a drop on your wrist so it feels body temperature, and feed straight away.

Never use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled more than once. Prepare a fresh bottle for every feed, never reheat, never microwave, and discard anything left 2 hours after your baby starts drinking.

A note on water temperature. Kendamil specifies water at 70°C or hotter, which matches NHS and WHO guidance for powdered formula — powder is not sterile, and that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. Let the bottle cool to body temperature before feeding, and always test a drop on the inside of your wrist first.

Please read before buying

Follow-on formula is only for babies over 6 months and is not suitable from birth. This is a cow's milk formula and not suitable for babies with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.

Store cans in a cool, dry place. Once opened, use within the period printed on the can. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.

Packaging & cans

Formula cans are thin-walled metal and can pick up dents under pressure in transit. A dent in the outer can does not affect the sealed powder inside. If a seal is ever broken or the powder looks or smells wrong, do not use it — message us and we will replace it.

Questions parents ask

Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2: frequently asked questions

What age is Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 for?

Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 is a follow-on milk for babies from 6 to 12 months who have started solid food. It is not suitable from birth — a baby under six months needs a first infant milk such as Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 1. At around 10 to 12 months you can move on to Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 3, the toddler milk, or to whole cow's milk on your health visitor's advice.

What is the difference between Kendamil Bio Nature and Kendamil Organic at Stage 2?

Two things, and only one of them is big. The small one is the base: Bio Nature Stage 2 is organic whole milk plus organic cream, and Kendamil Organic Stage 2 is organic whole milk plus skimmed milk with no cream. The big one is prebiotics. Bio Nature Stage 2 lists a named human milk oligosaccharide, 3'-GL, on its panel. Kendamil Organic Stage 2's panel lists galacto-oligosaccharides only, with no named HMO, even where marketing copy claims one. Organic Stage 2 does carry Red Tractor farm assurance that Bio Nature does not.

Does Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 contain HMOs?

Yes. Stage 2 is the first Bio Nature stage with an explicitly named human milk oligosaccharide, 3'-galactosyllactose, alongside its organic galacto-oligosaccharide prebiotic. HMOs are the non-digestible carbohydrates found naturally in breast milk that feed beneficial gut bacteria rather than the baby directly. Bio Nature Stage 1 does not name an HMO on its panel — it uses GOS alone. Always check the panel on your own can, as Kendamil reformulates from time to time.

Do I have to switch to Stage 2 at six months?

No. Follow-on milk is an option from six months, not a requirement, and many health services say a first infant milk is fine for the whole first year. What Stage 2 changes is the protein ratio — it moves to casein-dominant at 40:60, which digests more slowly and tends to feel more filling for a baby who is now on three meals a day. Finish the can you are on, switch gradually over several days, and ask your health visitor if you are unsure.

How much prepared formula does one 800g can make?

One 800g can of Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 makes approximately 209 fluid ounces of prepared formula, which works out at roughly 41 bottles of 5 fl oz each, or about 6.2 litres. Actual yield depends on how accurately each scoop is levelled. For planning, a baby between 6 and 12 months typically uses about 2 to 3 cans per month, less than at Stage 1 because solid food now covers part of their intake.

Does Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 contain palm oil or fish oil?

Neither. The DHA comes from Schizochytrium microalgae oil rather than fish oil, and the ARA comes from Mortierella alpina, which makes the formula suitable for vegetarian families. The fat blend uses organic sunflower, coconut and rapeseed oils with no palm oil at all — Kendamil is the only major European infant formula brand that leaves palm oil out across its entire range. There is also no maltodextrin, no starch, no corn syrup and no added sugar.

Can I use it if my baby has a cow's milk allergy?

No. Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 2 is a cow's milk formula with intact, unhydrolysed milk protein, so it is not suitable for a baby with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. A diagnosed allergy needs an extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid based formula prescribed by a doctor. If your baby is unsettled, gassy or constipated without a diagnosis, a partially hydrolysed comfort formula is a much milder step — speak to your health visitor first.

What formula comes after Stage 2?

Kendamil Bio Nature Stage 3 is the toddler milk, for children from 10 to 36 months. One thing to know before you plan that far ahead: Stage 3 is not organic certified, because the added vitamins and minerals needed to hit toddler nutrient targets make it ineligible under EU organic rules. If keeping an organic seal all the way to 36 months matters to you, Kendamil Organic Stage 3 is the can that does that.
