Single 800g Tin · UK Version

What is HiPP UK Anti-Reflux formula?

HiPP UK Anti-Reflux is a German-made, UK-labelled anti-reflux baby formula for babies from birth, thickened with locust bean gum so that feeds are less likely to come back up. It is classed in the EU as a food for special medical purposes and is intended for use on a health professional's advice. One 800g tin makes about 189 fl oz of prepared formula.

Reflux formula works mechanically, not chemically. Locust bean gum — carob bean gum, a plant fibre — makes the prepared bottle thicker and heavier, so a baby who brings feeds back up frequently is more likely to keep them down. The protein in this tin is intact cow's milk protein, not hydrolysed, so it is not an allergy formula and is not a substitute for one.

What separates this tin from the other European anti-reflux formula parents cross-shop is the live culture. HiPP includes Lactobacillus fermentum (hereditum), the same Combiotik culture used across its everyday range. Aptamil AR, the closest alternative, contains no probiotic strain at all.

Be clear about one thing before you buy: this tin is not organic certified. HiPP's everyday Bio Combiotik range carries the EU Organic leaf; the thickened anti-reflux recipe does not. It also contains palm oil and fish oil. This is a functional formula bought to solve a feeding problem, not a clean-label or organic choice.

Nutrition

What's in HiPP UK Anti-Reflux per 100ml?

Prepared as directed, every 100ml provides 66 kcal, 3.6g fat, 1.25g protein, 6.9g carbohydrate, 51mg calcium, 0.70mg iron and 0.60mg zinc. The carbohydrate is lactose, the thickener is locust bean gum, and the long-chain fats come from fish oil and Mortierella alpina oil. There is no added GOS or FOS in this recipe — the gut support here is the Lactobacillus fermentum culture.

Ingredient facts

What is not in HiPP UK Anti-Reflux?

No maltodextrin, no corn syrup, no starch, no soy and no added sugar — the only carbohydrate is lactose, and the ingredients are non-GMO. What it does contain, and what we will not hide behind a tick list, is palm oil, fish oil and a gum thickener. Judge this tin on whether it settles your baby's feeds, not on its ingredient deck.

Comparison

How does HiPP UK Anti-Reflux compare to HiPP AR German 600g and Aptamil AR?

All three are thickened with locust bean gum, all three are regulated as foods for special medical purposes, and none of the three is organic certified. The two HiPP tins carry a probiotic culture that Aptamil AR does not. Aptamil AR carries a GOS and FOS prebiotic blend that neither HiPP tin does, and it is Halal certified.

Being straight with you: if Halal certification or a prebiotic blend matters to you, Aptamil AR is the better tin and we stock it. Aptamil's manufacturer also publishes explicit instructions to prepare AR formula by hand rather than in a machine; HiPP publishes no equivalent instruction for this tin, and that is less clarity for you, not more freedom. HiPP's real advantage here is the Lactobacillus fermentum culture. If you would rather trial the same thickened recipe in a smaller box first, the HiPP AR German 600g is the cheaper way in — but compare price per prepared ounce, not per box, because that is a 600g box against this 800g tin.

Planning ahead

How many tins of formula will my baby need per month?

No tins-per-month figure is published for this exact 800g UK tin. What is solid is the yield: one tin makes about 189 fl oz, roughly 37 five-ounce bottles. On that basis a baby feeding exclusively on it uses about 2 to 3 tins a month in the newborn weeks, rising to roughly 4 to 5 tins a month by six months.

Anti-reflux formula is usually started, reviewed and often stopped on a clinician's advice, and many babies outgrow reflux during the first year. Buy for the next few weeks rather than the next few months until you know it is working for your baby.

Estimates for exclusive formula feeding, worked from this tin's own yield rather than a manufacturer figure. Every baby feeds differently — use these for planning, not as a target.

Preparation

How do you prepare HiPP UK Anti-Reflux?

Boil fresh water and let it cool to 40–50°C, pour the measured water into a sterilised bottle first, add the exact number of level scoops from the feeding chart on the tin, roll the bottle between your palms for about 5 seconds and shake for about 20 seconds, then let it stand 5 to 7 minutes so the locust bean gum thickens, shake again, cool to about 37°C and test before feeding. Prepare it by hand.

1

Sterilise everything

Wash and sterilise the bottle, teat, ring and cap, and wash your hands before you start.

2

Boil and cool the water

Boil fresh tap water, then let it cool to 40–50°C — this formula is mixed cooler than a standard infant formula.

3

Water into the bottle first

Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.

4

Add level scoops

Add the exact number of level scoops shown on the tin's feeding chart, levelled off, never pressed down or heaped.

5

Shake, then stand 5–7 min

Roll the bottle between your palms for about 5 seconds, shake for about 20 seconds, then let it stand so the gum thickens, and shake again.

6

Cool, test, feed

Cool the bottle under running water to about 37°C, test a drop on your inner wrist, and feed straight away.

Prepare this formula by hand. Locust bean gum thickens while the bottle stands, and that is exactly the step bottle warmers and automatic formula machines are not built around — which is why manufacturers of thickened anti-reflux formulas caution against using them. HiPP publishes no machine instructions for this tin, so we publish none either. Never use artificially softened water or water boiled more than once, never microwave a prepared bottle, and discard anything left 1 to 2 hours after your baby starts drinking.

Please read before buying

Anti-reflux formula is a food for special medical purposes. Start it, and stop it, on the advice of your pediatrician, GP or health visitor — frequent spit-up has several causes and only some of them are helped by thickening. This formula uses intact cow's milk protein and is not suitable for a baby with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. It contains fish. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.

Store the tin in a cool, dry place with the lid closed. Once opened, use within the period printed on the pack. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.

Packaging & tins

Tins can pick up small dents in transit. A dent in the outer metal does not affect the sealed powder inside. If a seal is ever broken, or the powder looks or smells wrong, do not use it — message us and we will replace it.

Questions parents ask

HiPP UK Anti-Reflux: frequently asked questions

Is HiPP UK Anti-Reflux organic?

No. This thickened anti-reflux tin is not organic certified, even though HiPP's everyday Bio Combiotik range is. Thickened and specialised infant formulas commonly fall outside organic certification because of how they are formulated. If an organic certificate is what you came for, HiPP's Dutch and German Combiotik tins carry the EU Organic leaf and are the right place to look instead.

Do I need a doctor's advice before using anti-reflux formula?

Yes, you should have it. Anti-reflux formula is regulated in the EU as a food for special medical purposes, which means it is intended for use under medical supervision. Frequent spit-up is very common and usually harmless, but it can also point to overfeeding, feeding position, or a cow's milk protein allergy — none of which a thickener fixes. Ask your pediatrician or health visitor before you switch.

Can I prepare this formula in a bottle warmer or a formula machine?

Prepare it by hand instead. Locust bean gum only thickens after the made-up bottle has stood for several minutes, and automatic formula machines and bottle warmers are not designed around that step, which is why manufacturers of thickened anti-reflux formulas caution against them. Mix it in a sterilised bottle, let it stand, shake it again and feed. HiPP publishes no machine instructions for this tin.

Is this the same as the HiPP AR German 600g box?

They are close relatives rather than the same product. The German box holds 600g and is labelled for the German market; this tin holds 800g and is labelled for the UK market, although it is manufactured in Germany. Both are thickened with locust bean gum, both carry the Lactobacillus fermentum culture, and both publish the same energy and protein figures per 100ml. Compare them on price per prepared ounce.

Can my baby have this from birth, and how long can they stay on it?

Yes. It is a from-birth formula and is nutritionally complete, so it can be a baby's only milk for the first six months and can continue alongside solid food after that, to around twelve months. How long a baby should stay on it is a clinical decision rather than a shopping one — many babies outgrow reflux well before their first birthday and move back to a standard infant formula.

How much prepared formula does one tin make?

About 189 fluid ounces, which is roughly 37 bottles of five ounces. Working from that yield, a baby feeding exclusively on formula tends to use about two to three tins a month in the newborn weeks, rising to roughly four to five tins a month by six months. Those are planning estimates rather than manufacturer figures, and any breastfeeding alongside formula brings them down.

Does it contain a probiotic or a prebiotic?

It contains a probiotic culture, Lactobacillus fermentum (hereditum), the same culture HiPP uses across its Combiotik range. That is a genuine difference from Aptamil AR, which has no probiotic strain. It does not contain added GOS or FOS prebiotics, however, where Aptamil AR does carry a prebiotic blend — so the two tins support the gut in different ways rather than one simply beating the other.

What should I feed my baby once the reflux settles?

Most families move back to a standard infant formula for their baby's age. If you want an organic tin, HiPP Dutch Stage 1 covers birth to six months and HiPP Dutch Stage 2 covers six months onwards, both EU Organic certified and both carrying the same Lactobacillus fermentum culture as this anti-reflux tin. Make the change gradually and mention it to your health visitor.
