What is HiPP Comfort baby formula?
HiPP Comfort is a German formula for colic and constipation, made with hydrolysed whey protein broken down to roughly 86–87%, reduced lactose and a beta-palmitate fat structure. One formulation covers birth through 12 months, so there is no stage to switch at six months. The 600g box makes about 164.6 fl oz of prepared formula.
This is a functional formula, not a purity story. Three things are deliberately different from HiPP's standard organic Bio Combiotik line: the whey protein is hydrolysed instead of intact, the lactose is cut back and partly replaced with starch and maltodextrin, and the fat blend includes beta-palmitate, which is there to change how calcium and fat behave in the gut.
It is for the baby who is genuinely uncomfortable on a standard European baby formula — drawing the legs up, straining, hard infrequent stools, long unsettled evenings. It is the step parents usually try after a standard formula and before anything medical, and it is best started with your paediatrician's input rather than on a hunch.
What it is not: an allergy formula. Colic and constipation are digestive-comfort problems, and a cow's milk protein allergy is an immune one. If your baby has a diagnosed allergy, Comfort is not the answer — that needs an extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid formula from a doctor.
HiPP Comfort is not EU Organic certified. There is no organic leaf on this box. On its Bio Combiotik range HiPP marks every farmed ingredient as organic; on this one it marks none, so we cannot tell you the milk here is organically farmed — that comes from HiPP's own ingredient declaration rather than from the brand name.
HiPP's own explanation is that legislation does not allow its specialist milks to be certified organic, and Comfort is built on three changes an everyday formula does not make: the lactose is reduced, the whey protein is partly broken down, and maltodextrin and starch are added. Those changes are why parents choose it, and why it sits in HiPP's specialist range rather than its organic one.

Why is HiPP Comfort easier on a colicky baby?
Three named changes, not one vague claim. The whey protein is hydrolysed to roughly 86–87%, so it leaves the stomach as short peptides. The lactose is reduced to about 2.7g per 100ml. And the fat carries beta-palmitate, a structure that changes what happens to calcium and fat further down the gut.
Beta-palmitate is the one worth understanding. In most vegetable-oil blends, palmitic acid sits on the outer positions of the fat molecule, gets cleaved off during digestion, and binds calcium into soaps that harden the stool. Position it in the middle — the sn-2 position, the way it sits in human milk — and it stays attached to the glycerol backbone, is absorbed as it is, and takes the calcium with it instead of locking it up. That is the mechanism behind softer stools and better calcium absorption, and it is a genuine formulation edge that most comfort formulas do not carry.
The reduced lactose matters for the gassy end of the problem: less lactose reaching the colon means less fermentation and less gas. Note the word reduced. At about 2.7g per 100ml this is still a lactose-containing formula and it is not lactose-free — a baby with true lactose intolerance needs a different product.
On top of all three sits HiPP's Combiotik pairing: GOS prebiotic fibre to feed the gut flora, and the Lactobacillus fermentum hereditum culture. None of this is a cure for colic, which most babies grow out of regardless. It is a change of inputs worth a two-week trial with your paediatrician watching.

Being straight with you: Kendamil Comfort beats this box on several things parents genuinely care about — no palm oil, DHA from algae instead of fish, a whole-milk rather than skimmed base, and halal, kosher and vegetarian certification that HiPP does not hold. If any of those are on your list, buy Kendamil. Note too that both Aptamil Comfort and Kendamil come in 800g tins against HiPP's 600g box, so a straight price comparison is misleading — divide by prepared ounces, not by box. How many boxes of HiPP Comfort will my baby need per month?
One 600g box makes about 164.6 fl oz — roughly 33 five-ounce bottles. An exclusively formula-fed baby typically uses around 3 boxes a month in the first weeks, rising to roughly 4–5 boxes a month between two and six months, then easing back to about 3–4 a month once solid food is doing some of the work.
Because HiPP Comfort is one formulation for the whole first year, you are not switching products mid-way — the volume just changes. That makes it easier to plan a standing order than with a staged line.

How do you prepare HiPP Comfort?
Boil fresh water and let it cool to 40–50°C, pour the measured water into a sterilised bottle first, then add one level 4.3g scoop for every 30ml of water — following the feeding chart on your box for the amount your baby's age needs — shake vigorously until dissolved, cool to body temperature, test on your wrist and feed. Discard anything left after two hours.

Sterilise everything
Wash your hands, then sterilise the bottle, teat, cap and the scoop before every feed.

Boil and cool to 40–50°C
Boil fresh drinking water and let it cool to between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius before mixing.

Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.

Shake vigorously until no powder clings to the sides — hydrolysed powder needs a firmer shake than standard formula.

Cool under running water to about 37°C, drop some on your inner wrist to check, then feed straight away.
Never use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled more than once. Prepare a fresh bottle for every feed, never reheat, never microwave, and discard anything left 2 hours after your baby starts drinking.

It is not suitable for a baby with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy, who needs an extensively hydrolysed or amino-acid formula obtained through a doctor, and it is not lactose-free. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.
Store boxes in a cool, dry place, away from steam and direct sun. Once opened, keep the inner bag folded closed and use the box within 3 weeks. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.

A minor cosmetic dent in the outer carton is not a safety problem — the powder sits in a sealed inner bag. What does matter is a carton that has been punctured, or an inner seal that is broken or already open. If you receive one like that, do not use it; message us and we will replace it.

Is HiPP Comfort organic?
No. HiPP Comfort is not organic certified. Is HiPP Comfort lactose-free?
No. It is reduced-lactose, not lactose-free. A prepared 100ml contains roughly 2.7 grams of lactose against about 7 grams in a standard infant formula, with starch and maltodextrin making up the difference. That reduction is enough to help a baby whose discomfort comes from lactose reaching the colon and fermenting, but it is not suitable for a child with diagnosed lactose intolerance or galactosaemia, who needs a genuinely lactose-free product.
Can I use HiPP Comfort from birth?

If bringing feeds back up is the main problem rather than gas or hard stools, an anti-reflux formula is the category to look at, and reflux that is causing pain, poor weight gain or distress always warrants a doctor's opinion first.
How long should I try it before deciding it works?
Give any formula change a fair run rather than judging it in two days. Most parents and clinicians look for a change over roughly one to two weeks, watching stool consistency and frequency, wind, and how settled the evenings are. Switching repeatedly between formulas is the commonest mistake, because each change resets the clock and makes it impossible to tell what actually helped. Keep a short daily note and take it to your paediatrician.
