What is HiPP Dutch Stage 2 formula?
HiPP Dutch Stage 2 is a Dutch-market organic follow-on formula for babies from 6 months, made from organic skimmed milk and whey with lactose as its carbohydrate and no starch and no maltodextrin. It is EU Organic certified. This listing is a single 800g tin — about 204 fl oz of prepared formula, roughly 41 five-ounce bottles.
Stage 2 is the milk for a baby who has started solid food. Compared with Stage 1 it carries roughly double the iron (1.0mg against 0.5mg per 100ml) and half again the calcium (77mg against 51mg), because a six-month-old draws less of both from milk alone. EU law does not permit a follow-on milk to be marketed for babies under six months, so there is no reason to move up early.
What sets this tin apart from most organic rivals at the same stage is the pairing HiPP calls Combiotik: a named live culture, Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716, alongside GOS prebiotic made from the milk's own organic lactose. Holle's Dutch Stage 2, the closest organic alternative, has neither — and it moves to maltodextrin and starch where this tin stays lactose-led.
The Dutch line is not the German line. HiPP Nederland sells four stages in 800g tins; the German range runs seven stages in 600g boxes. If you are comparing prices between the two, compare per prepared ounce, not per box. Coming from HiPP Dutch Stage 1, this is the direct next step; from around ten months the line continues with HiPP Dutch Stage 3.
What's in HiPP Dutch Stage 2 per 100ml?
Prepared as directed, every 100ml provides 68 kcal, 3.7g fat (1.6g of it saturated), 1.4g protein, 7.1g carbohydrate (7.0g of it lactose), 77mg calcium, 1.0mg iron and 13.6mg DHA from fish oil. The prebiotic is GOS made from organic lactose, and the culture is Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716.

Protein is published as 1.4g per 100ml for this Dutch tin. HiPP's German Stage 2 publishes 1.3g on an otherwise near-identical panel — a rounding-level difference between two sources rather than a formulation gap, but worth knowing if you are comparing labels closely.
What is not in HiPP Dutch Stage 2?
No starch, no maltodextrin, no added sugar, no soy and no gluten — the carbohydrate is lactose, which is unusual for a follow-on milk, since most brands add starch from Stage 2 onward for satiety. The ingredients are non-GMO. The honest caveat: this tin does contain organic palm oil, and its DHA comes from fish oil.

How does HiPP Dutch Stage 2 compare to HiPP Stage 2 German and Holle Dutch Stage 2?
All three are EU Organic certified follow-on formulas for babies from six months. Holle adds Demeter, the stricter biodynamic tier, and takes its DHA from microalgae rather than fish. HiPP's Dutch tin is the only one of the three with no starch and no maltodextrin, and the only one that pairs a named probiotic strain with a GOS prebiotic.

Being straight with you: Holle Dutch Stage 2 beats this tin on certification and on DHA sourcing — Demeter is a tier above EU Organic, and microalgae DHA suits families who avoid fish. We stock it. HiPP has no Demeter certification and never has. Where HiPP wins at this stage is the carbohydrate: Holle's Stage 2 introduces maltodextrin and starch, while this tin stays lactose-led, and HiPP is the only one of the three with a live culture. If you are also looking at HiPP Stage 2 German, remember it is a 600g box against this 800g tin, and it contains starch.
How many tins of formula will my baby need per month?
A formula-fed baby at this stage gets through roughly 2.5 to 3.5 tins of HiPP Dutch Stage 2 a month, depending on how much milk each feed holds. One 800g tin makes about 204 fl oz, or 41 bottles of five ounces. Those figures come off HiPP's own Dutch feeding chart: 150ml of water and five scoops makes a 170ml feed, 210ml and seven scoops makes 235ml.
The range is wide because solid food is now part of the picture. A baby taking three 235ml feeds a day will work through a tin faster than one taking two 170ml feeds alongside a full plate of breakfast. Count your baby's actual daily ounces and divide 204 by that figure for a number that fits your household.
Estimates for a baby whose milk is still their main drink alongside solids. Every baby feeds differently — use these for planning, not as a target.
How do you prepare HiPP Dutch Stage 2?
Sterilise your equipment, boil fresh water and let it cool to about 40°C, pour the measured water into the bottle first, add the number of level scoops shown on the tin's chart (five scoops to 150ml, six to 180ml, seven to 210ml), seal and shake until fully dissolved, test on your forearm and feed immediately.
Sterilise everything
Wash and sterilise the bottle, teat, ring and cap, and wash your hands before you start.
Boil and cool the water
Boil fresh tap water, then let it cool to about 40°C before you measure it into the bottle.
Water into the bottle first
Pour the measured water into the sterilised bottle before you add any powder — never the other way round.
Add level scoops
Follow the chart on the tin: five level scoops to 150ml of water, six to 180ml, seven to 210ml.
Seal and shake
Seal the bottle and shake it vigorously until the powder has fully dissolved and no lumps remain.
Test, then feed
Check the temperature on your inner forearm and feed straight away rather than keeping the bottle back.
A note on water temperature. HiPP specifies water at about 40°C for this formula, and that is the instruction printed on your tin. It is set deliberately — hotter water damages the live cultures and heat-sensitive vitamins this formula is built around.
Many health authorities, including the NHS and WHO, advise 70°C or hotter for any powdered formula, because powder is not sterile and that temperature kills bacteria that can occasionally be present. The difference matters most for newborns, premature babies, and babies with weakened immunity. If your baby is in one of those groups, ask your paediatrician or health visitor which to follow for your situation.

This is a follow-on formula and is only suitable for babies over 6 months — it is not a substitute for Stage 1 or for breast milk before that age. It is made from cow's milk and is not suitable for a baby with a diagnosed cow's milk protein allergy. It contains fish oil. Breastfeeding is best for your baby — talk to your health visitor or doctor before starting or changing a formula.
Store the tin in a cool, dry place with the lid closed. Once opened, use within the period printed on the pack. Never reheat or microwave prepared formula.
Packaging & tins
Tins can pick up small dents in transit. A dent in the outer metal does not affect the sealed powder inside. If a seal is ever broken, or the powder looks or smells wrong, do not use it — message us and we will replace it.
HiPP Dutch Stage 2: frequently asked questions
When should I move my baby from Stage 1 to Stage 2?
At six months, when your baby begins eating solid food. Under EU labelling law a follow-on milk cannot be marketed as suitable before six months, so there is no benefit in switching early. If your baby is happy on Stage 1 there is also no obligation to move at exactly six months — Stage 1 remains nutritionally complete. Make any change gradually over a few days.
Does HiPP Dutch Stage 2 contain starch or maltodextrin?
No. The carbohydrate in this tin is lactose, the sugar naturally present in milk, and the ingredient list contains no starch, no maltodextrin, no corn syrup and no added sugar. That is unusual at Stage 2, where most brands add starch for satiety — including HiPP's own German Stage 2 and Holle's Dutch Stage 2, both of which do contain it.
Is it the same as HiPP German Stage 2?
They are separately manufactured products from the same company and they are not interchangeable on the shelf. This Dutch tin holds 800g, is labelled in Dutch, and contains no starch. The German box holds 600g, is part of a seven-stage range, and does contain organic starch. Their published energy and DHA figures are nearly identical; the carbohydrate and the pack size are the real differences.
Is HiPP Dutch Stage 2 Demeter certified?
No. It is EU Organic certified, with HiPP's own internal organic standard applied on top, but it does not carry Demeter and no HiPP formula does. Demeter is a biodynamic certification, and in our range it belongs to parts of the Holle line. If Demeter is what you are shopping for at this stage, Holle Dutch Stage 2 is the tin to compare.
What probiotic and prebiotic does it contain?
The live culture is Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716, which HiPP brands as Hereditum — a lactic acid bacterium of a type also found in breast milk. The prebiotic is GOS, galacto-oligosaccharides made from the tin's own organic lactose, which acts as food for gut bacteria. HiPP calls this pairing Combiotik. Holle's Dutch Stage 2 contains neither a culture nor an added prebiotic.
How much prepared formula does one 800g tin make?
About 204 fluid ounces, roughly 41 bottles of five ounces. At this stage most babies work through about two and a half to three and a half tins a month, depending on how large their feeds are and how much solid food they are eating. Count your baby's actual daily ounces and divide 204 by that number for an estimate that fits your household.
Can I still breastfeed while using this formula?
Yes. Combination feeding is common at six months and this formula does not require you to stop breastfeeding. Many families use formula for some feeds and breast milk for others, particularly when returning to work. Breastfeeding remains the best start for your baby, so mention any change in your feeding pattern to your health visitor or doctor.
What comes after Stage 2 in this line?
HiPP Dutch Stage 3, the Dutch line's growth milk, which the Netherlands market calls Groeimelk. The Dutch range runs four stages in 800g tins, unlike HiPP's German range, which runs seven stages in 600g boxes and uses different numbering. Because the two systems do not line up, check the age on the tin rather than assuming a Stage 3 is a Stage 3 across both lines.
